  • A new interview that Kevin conducted with High Times Magazine is now online. Here’s a quick sample:
Every movie you’ve made seems to have made these huge jumps in quality. The difference between Clerks and Dogma is huge.

Yeah, they really do take jumps. This one takes a quantum leap from the rest of them. Not in terms of content, but visually. The last two, Chasing Amy and Dogma, were like Bob Hope movies but with satirical ideas. The movies play off the laughs. They’re not message movies by any stretch of the imagination. We attack pop culture, the pervasiveness of “the Net” and entertainment culture. They go for the funny bone.

  • News from the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival: “J&SBSB” is playing in a bunch of theaters this week. It’s the first time the film is being screened in that area, and may even be the last. All the screenings have sold out sofar, a very good sign.

  • Here’s a scan of the front cover of that Affleck article we discussed recently. Click the thumbnail for a better look.
  • AOL entertainment has posted their top ten fashion flops of thsi year, and Jason Mewes is coming in at number 10 from his pimp gear coat from the premiere:
“Blue Fur With Love: ‘Jay and Silent Bob’ star Jason Mewes puts his hands up and surrenders to the fashion police.”

Check it out HERE.

  • In the current issue of Playboy (November), Will Ferrell is interviewed for 20 Questions. There are no Jay and Bob references, just a mention. Also in that issue, there’s an article about the history of Oral Sex. At the very end, rounding off the attitudes of our current generation Kevin gets a mention for Clerks and the Danta/Veronica discussion of her not defining oral sex as sex – It’s transcribed to close the article out.
  • This letter and rather catty editorial reply show up in the latest Village Voice:
Washington City Paper CHAKA CON Re Richard Goldstein’s “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Backlash” [September 18]: Lighten up. Yes, homosexuals are a persecuted minority. Yes, they are the butt of many jokes in cinema. Kevin Smith does indeed make jokes at the expense of said group. But within the same movie are jokes about blacks (Chris Rock’s character is named Chaka), law officers, women, and many more I will not bother to mention. A comedy by definition makes fun of people for the purpose of a joke—an easy laugh. If you look at Smith’s track record you will see that he is one of the few directors out there who does show respect to homosexuals. His film Chasing Amy is a fine example. Jason Lee’s awakening to his sexuality is a minor but important event in that film. Additionally, Smith’s Green Arrow comic book (published by DC Comics) has a gay character who is portrayed as just another guy. His sexual preference is not a major issue, and is rarely mentioned. A comprehensive look at Smith’s work clearly shows that he is not hateful toward any group.

Richard Goldstein replies: Anyone who sees Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back can attest to its obsession with homosexuality. As for Chasing Amy, any film that features a woman whose lesbianism stems from a traumatic relationship with a guy—and who ends up with a guy—is not pro-gay. It’s a straight man’s dyke film.

  • A Bartelby and Loki homage appears in this online comic called Fanboy Otaku Gamers Club.
  • And finally today, a familiar-sounding poll that looks to be inspired by J&SBSB appears HERE.
