- E!‘s Summer 2001 movie preview strangely lists Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as a film to both watch and to NOT watch. Weird huh? It seems that the author of the piece recommends the film for Kev’s fans, but doesn’t think non-fans will find it to their liking. We beg to differ, as this one seems like it’ll be very mainstream and enjoyable for folks who have yet to see a single View Askew film. Anyway, here’s the positive comments (though they again diss poor Mallrats):
And the negative ones:
Personally, the whole list seems a bit off-kilter, so I wouldn’t take too much of it to heart.
- Jim McLauchlin tells us that a brand new interview with Kevin will appear on Wizardworld.com this Friday, May 4. Topics will cover everything from “JSBSB†to Green Arrow to Bluntman and Chronic comics to Mark Hamill to Batman to potential future Marvel Comics projects. Sounds like a good one. We’ll remind ya when it’s posted.
- Jay is listed as one of the “Summer’s Hot Stars†on Ifilm‘s summer preview. WARNING: Those of you who have yet to read the synopsis for the film might find a few SPOILERS ahead, swipe at your own risk:
Summer Fling: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (August 24)
Claim to Fame: When writer-director Kevin Smith needed a slacker sidekick for his Silent Bob character in his no-budget Clerks (1994), he turned to real-life pal Mewes. Though the Jersey native had never acted before, he seemed to inherently understand the motivation of his character: Toke up a “fatty boom batty blunt,†and dispense potty-mouthed, dude-speak bon mots like, “What’s up, sluts?â€
Mewes, who turns 27 in June, has become Smith’s good-luck charm, appearing alongside him as Jay (aka, Jay Phat Buds) in Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997) and Dogma (1999).
Big-Screen Break: A sideshow no more, Mewes’ character is front and center in Smith’s latest, which finds the titular Jersey boys out for revenge after they learn that Banky (Chasing Amy’s Jason Lee) has sold them out. See, Banky’s Bluntman and Chronic, a comic book based on Jay and Silent Bob, is being turned into a movie starring-spoilers ahead!-James Van Der Beek and Jason Biggs. Someone must pay!
Career Prognosis: Smokin’. Mewes has had trouble breaking into the mainstream, but with Jay and Silent Bob (featuring such Smith alums as Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Chris Rock and Shannen Doherty), his time may have finally come. Can it be long before his “snootch to the nootch†catchphrase (English translation: “just kiddingâ€) sweeps the nation?
- George Carlin was on the conservative op/ed show The O’Reilly Factor night before last and was discussing with Bill O’Reilly the use of vulgar language in American soceity/art. O’Reilly is prone to ripping his guests with differing opinons to shreds, but with Carlin, clearly respected the man and both discussed the topic articulately and gentlemanly. You can read the entire transcript of the piece HERE.
