- Today’s Internet Movie Database (IMDB) daily poll brings us the ultimate in all View Askew queries: “What is your favorite Kevin Smith movie?”. The poll has used the films of Kevin before, but this is certainly the biggest one ever. The choices include all his previous films, even giving users an option to be most looking forward to “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”, though we’re not sure how accurate that makes the results, really. Check it out and vote today.
- Marvel has announced the upcoming release of the 10th Anniversary edition of Kevin’s famous “Daredevil: Guardian Devil” run. The book will hit shelves on September 10th, collecting Daredevil #1 – #8, in a new hardcover edition. This is not only one of the greatest DD storylines ever, but also marks a major turning point and rebirth for comics, re-igniting the trend of Hollywood’s assocation with the comic industry. Many film and TV folks came to comics AFTER Kevin, but he blazed a trail with this incredible series. We’re hoping for signed copies from the Stash, so we’ll keep you posted as we learn more of this book’s arrival. Suggested retail price is $24.99.
- During our recent web travels, we noticed that a fan has created a “WidSets” widget that tracks the latest News Askew updates. WidSets is a service that brings the Internet to your cell phone, using mini-applications (widgets) to push our updates directly to your supported cell phone. To whomever might have set this up for us, thanks!

- Kevin recently appeared to support the fight against breast cancer at the Avon Foundation’s annual walk, the largest event of its kind. Check out a photo above of the man with our loyal scooper Alonso’s team. To support them and make a donation, visit their walk page.
- Entertainment Weekly’s got a feature over on their website called “23 Movies You’d Love to See on the Big Screen”. It’s written by readers, one of whom claims that their absolute favorite would be “Clue,” a movie that Kevin and Scott talked about (and lightly berated) on an older classic SModcast. Ah, ya gotta love “Clue”.
Kevin Smith “Sold Out” – In Stores Mid-October!
- According to the star himself, Kevin’s new Q&A DVD, titled “Kevin Smith: Sold Out”, will hit store shelves sometime in mid-October. This disc will chronicle the evening Kevin spend in Red Bank, New Jersey on his 37th birthday. We were there with full coverage of the event (though are saving some of the spoilerish stuff for after the disc’s release). Kevin entertained the crowd for another marathon Q&A and a ton of new tales, including the incredible saga of Die Hard 4 that you just have to hear (worth the disc’s price alone).
Consider this date unofficial for now, though we’ll of course keep you posted on official news regarding the project — It’s been a while since a new Kevin/View Askew DVD crossed our desks, so we’re extra excited for the chance to get a glimpse at this one.

- One of our favorite all-time View Askew comic references arrives in Madman #9 today — Look at the Secret Stash’s glorious appearance in this two page center spread. The book also features appearances of a Graphitti Designs storefront and Graphitti’s own Bob Chapman. Full details on the book over at the Image Comics site. Kudos to Mike Allred for another fantastic book and for working in those wonderful homages. Just photos for now, if anyone has clearer scans, send ’em on!
- We’re loving this Youtube short for “Jay & Seth vs. The Apocalypse”. In the newly announced feature film version, Seth Rogen will star opposite his onscreen ‘Knocked Up’ pal Jay Baruchel. It’s being called an “action comedy”. E! Online has a bit more detail, revealing that the film should start shooting sometime in 2009 (the film linked above was a short made last year, which became inspiration for the full-length project). So far, we love what we’re seeing.
- One of our scoopers caught an early screening of “The Happening” (in theaters tomorrow, Friday the 13th) and has a few more details of our pal Brian O’Halloran’s role:
…I did notice Brian O’Halloran was in the movie and thought you guys should know since I haven’t seen any reference to it anywhere on View Askew related sites.
He plays a Jeep driver and it’s like Clerks for a moment where he is acting through expressions on the rear view mirror to the other actors in the car. Needless to say none of them recited a story about their cousin Walter breaking his neck.
I won’t give away any plot details as the less you know the better.
The film has been getting mixed and negative reviews thus far. Judge it for yourself in theaters this weekend. Congrats to Brian on the role; always good to see the guy onscreen.
News Askew – Now With Twitter!
- So, have you joined the Twitter craze yet? Twitter is sort of a micro-blog for those with short attention spans, a portable blog on the go where users set up accounts then post one-liners throughout the day, stuff like “Heading to the movies to see Iron Man”, or “Grilling up dinner”, etc. You get the idea. Sort of taking the idea of personal privacy totally out the window. And it’s insanely popular.
So, not being one to stray from the popular, we’ve decided to jump on board. So, those of you who follow Tweets might want to add “newsaskew” onto your Twitter follow list. The new News Askew Twitter channel will automatically Tweet you an update whenever we post a new story here, along with the headline and a link right over to us. Kind of an alternative to RSS for those of you who prefer it.
We hope some of you can make use of this new feature, as we continue to strive to be on the bleeding edge of web tech! More on the way.
Save New Jersey Film!!!
- Want to see a future View Askew film that uses locations in New Jersey, just like the good ‘ol days? If Jersey’s governor has his way, you may never see it again, as he wants to take away tax incentives that allow filmmakers to come into the state on the cheap, bringing lots of work to the State.
While the neighboring states of New York, Connecticut, & Pennsylvania are all increasing tax incentives to filmmakers, New Jersey Governor Corzine has decided to eliminate funding for the New Jersey State Film Commission starting July 1st 2008.
The New Jersey Film Commission provides invaluable services to location scouts and location managers working in the New York City area, without which, many projects would not have been filmed in New Jersey.
Filming in New Jersey Brought in 92 million dollars last year, money that will be spent in other states next year if the New Jersey Film Office is eliminated.
Immediate action is needed to prevent this blow to the film industry in the northeast. Visit savenewjerseyfilm.com for information on what you can do!

- Don’t miss the new SModcast 53, posted right on schedule at the start of this week – This time around, Scott and Kevin get back to business talking about MEAT, dogs, and well, more MEAT. Surf on over to Quick Stop Entertainment for your exclusive download , absolutely free! Mmmm….Steak-ummm. Yep, Kev, they still make it, and it’s still fantastic.
- Kevin gets a much-deserved name drop in a new NJ.com article on the use of many New Jersey filming locations used in recent Hollywood fare:
“…Other fans know the Garden State better as the home and stomping grounds of director and writer Kevin Smith.
Many of Smith’s films feature recurring New Jersey landmarks — including the Quick Stop Convenience Store in Leonardo where Smith worked as a teenager; Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and Jack’s Music Shoppe in Red Bank; and The Ice Rink in Brick Township.
Like Nobebosco in Blairstown, Smith’s rotating list of hot spots continues to draw picture-snapping fans from across the country. Lucky fans might even find Smith’s buddy and franchise alum Walt Flanagan working the register at the Stash.” - The long-gone Kevin Smith / Tim Burton “feud” is brought up today in a Los Angeles times piece titled “Directors Gone Wild”. The recent verbal tiff between Clint Eastwood and Spike Lee brought the topic back into the forefront.
- Yes, a veiled “Mallrats” reference even made it to a recent blog post on the ridiculous gas prices here in the U.S. these days. Personally, we gotta say the rates are getting to the point where driving habits just gotta start changing. Crazy times. Watch your wallets, folks. And we’ll see ya next time.
Jason Mewes @ London Film and Comic Con
- Our fine fans over in the United Kingdom are so kind to Kevin and the crew when they’re in town, so we have no doubt folks will line up for the London Film and Comic Con this year, as Jason Mewes has just been announced as a confirmed guest. The show will take place on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of July.
The thread on Mewes states that Jason will appear for a free Q&A as well as a photo shoot — We assume this means there will be time for your own photos and autographs.
Jason will be a popular dude at the show, so you may want to line up early. If we hear further details on how you can meet Jason, we’ll of course keep you posted.
Tom Savini, special FX master and genre actor, who has a small role in “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”, will also appear at the show.
A full guest list (quite impressive) and more details at the show’s official site.
