  • One more we missed from the big Wizard 200th issue — One feature is a countdown of events that have impacted the comics industry since 1991. Kevin’s run on Daredevil comes in big at number 10. Scan evidence above. The article cites Kevin as a trailblazer for bringing other big TV and film writers into the comics industry.
  • On Monday, April 21 at 2:15, the Nashville Film Festival will host a panel for Actors-Turned-Directors, featuring Chasing Amy’s own Joey Lauren Adams. April 13th @ 2:43 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Quite possibly our favorite piece of technology in the past 5 years, the iPhone and iPod Touch are remarkable little devices. When we redesigned News Askew, one of the main reasons was simply to allow better viewing on mobile platforms. News Askew displays nicely on the iPhone and the Touch, allowing you to keep up with the latest doings in the Askewniverse no matter where you are. And now, if you’re a frequent visitor to us on such a device, we’ve made it a bit easier to get to us, as well as to allow you to show your News Askew love on your device’s homescreen.

From inside the Safari browser, simply select the “+” button to add News Askew as a favorite when viewing the homepage. Then, hit “Add to Home Screen”. You’ll now be the proud owner of a pretty little News Askew icon right on your home screen, which will take you right to the latest news anytime you need it. Enjoy, and thanks for making us a part of your mobile browsing on Apple’s latest, coolest device.

Snips From Kev’s First NHL Blog…

April 13th @ 2:41 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The Devils are off to a shaky start in the playoffs this season, but Kevin’s blog with the NHL is smokin’. The first installment went live right after we announced the blog late last week and will continue to be avilable exclusively through the NHL website. Let’s take a look at a few highlights, though, shall we?

“…Devils fans live to hate the Rangers. Sometimes, it feels like a large cross-section of those folks in the stands at the Rock (and formerly at the Meadowlands) aren’t there so much to love on the Devils as they are to hate on New York: proof of this can be found when the Devils play any team that’s not NYR, and inevitably, at some point in the game, you hear an ornate series of whistles, followed by a mass shout of “RANGERS SUCK!” Even when the boys in blue aren’t anywhere near the building, we’re still seething about their very existence. You’d think we’d hold a special place in our hearts for the Rangers, as they gave us our first ever win back in ’82. Granted, they don’t roll over for us as much as Philly does (except, y’know – in that last game this season), but the Rangers’ve been hoisted up high on the Devils’ pitchfork enough times (the ’06 four-zip playoffs come to mind) to warrant at least a degree of affection.

Still, the Devils have nothing to be ashamed about – not even Marty who (that Callahan Sneak aside) played like the living legend he is. The Red and Black kicked off this year’s playoffs with authority, reminding the Rangers why they hate us almost as much as we hate them. All this one-game deficit really means is that we’ve gotta give just a little bit more in Game 2 to make it an even series again. And that’s something the Devils historically know how to do: give a little bit more. We’ve got three Cups to prove it.”

At presstime, Kevin’s New Jersey Devils are down against the Rangers, losing both of the first games in the playoffs. They face each other again today at 7 PM EST. Our beloved Flyers, down a game to the Washington Caps, skate today at 2 PM EST. The NHL playoffs run as a best-of-seven series, so the first team to win 4 games will eliminate the other. More blog highlights from Kevin as they come in.

Kevin To Blog For The NHL!

  • We’re from the Northeast US, so hockey is a sport that’s always been dear to our heart. From our beloved Philadelphia Flyers to all the influence we get from Canada, as well as great hockey teams out of New York and New Jersey, it’s tough to be a sports fan here and not love hockey, despite its overall lack of attention here in the States. So, we couldn’t help but crack a smile when we saw an AP press release come across the news desk today, indicating that Kevin was going to be part of a new NHL blog area at their official website. Here’s a snippet:

Jason Reitman, Lauren Conrad, Dierks Bentley and KEVIN SMITH are among the celebrities who will blog about their love of hockey on the National Hockey League’s Web site.

Beginning Wednesday, more than a dozen celebs will follow their favorite teams through the Stanley Cup playoffs, said NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur.

“As NHL.com bloggers, they can be irreverent and candid about their love for the NHL,” she said.

The NHL says that, beginning today, celebs can check in, chat about the playoffs, and how they fit their love of hockey team (Kev’s a Devils fan, naturally) into their hectic schedules. We’ll keep our eye on the blogs, as we’re sure that our fellow hockey fans will be, as well. You can check out Kev’s new area, just underway, HERE. Now, if only Philly would have an easier playoff schedule ahead of them…

Kevin Graces “Wizard 200”!

April 9th @ 7:57 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by John Whiteaker

  • Wizard, the greatest comics magazine in all the land, celebrates their 200th issue this month. And, naturally, it’s chock-full of Kevin Smith references due to all of his contributions to the comics and ancillary industries over the years. We’ve got a full suite of scans for you above, and below, a rundown of what you’ll find in each.

    • A section from the writers called ‘Our Favorite Stories’ in which Rickey Purdin (Entertainment Editor) writes about his experience at Kevin’s house and a poker tournament.

    • Kevin’s comics get mentioned in the ‘200 Greatest Comics in Wizard’s History [July 1991 to Now]. Daredevil #1 (vol. 2) is number 9 and Green Arrow #1 is in at number 101. Cool.

    • A section called ‘Art Gallery’ shows the Kevin as Green Arrow picture from one of the Wizard issues.

    • Finally, a section called ‘Our Favorite Stuff’ on toys and comics merchandise has the Jay and Bob figures.

A BIG thanks to scooper John who did the legwork on this one! Pick up the issue at your favorite comic shop or newstand now. It’s sure to be a collector’s item someday.
