LOADED Clerks Cartoon DVD To Bow This Dec/Jan!!!

June 29th @ 8:17 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Now HERE’S some fantastic news. The Clerks cartoon series DVDs are gonna be packed with some super coolness like new intros, extras, commentaries, and lots more. But why should we tell you this when we’ve got Kev himself with the news?
The preliminary talks are to release them on video and DVD in December/January. Jay and I will be intro-ing each as Jay and Silent Bob. The aim is to do commentary for each episode on DVD, and throw in extras, like storyboards, early art, etc.

Based on that, it doesn’t look likely that there will be any TV airings in the near future. To make up for this, we’ll be putting together the best possible package for video release, and keep it all as inexpensive as possible (so please – let’s stop with all the “Take it to Fox!” and “Take it to Comedy Central!” posts; neither Fox nor Comedy Central are interested).

Boy – the good news is just flowing like a heavy period around here!

Chasing Amy DVD IS Framed Incorrectly After All…

June 29th @ 8:11 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira & Jess

  • Well, it seems that astute viewers of the Chasing Amy DVD weren’t wrong after all. The sucker DOES have some framing issues and wasn’t, as the package advertises, supervised by DP Dave Klein (hence the errors). Vincent explains:
Well, it turns out that the mis-framing problems on the DVD are *NOT* our beloved D.P. Dave’s fault at all, because he DIDN’T supervise the transfer. As it happens, Scott became aware that Buena Vista was prepping to do a new 16:9 transfer of CHASING AMY, and informed Dave, who then got in touch with BV because he wanted to supervise it like he did the original video transfers (both the pan-and-scan and letterbox) in 1997. Well, he was told by BV that it was too late, the transfer was already done. I’m guessing Criterion was mis-informed when they were given the transfer and told that Dave supervised it- the folks at Criterion are all good people, and this must have been the result of them being given mis-information. It sucks- some shots on the DVD just don’t look right, and because the transfer is credited to Dave, everyone will be thinking it’s his fault. I just wanted to get the word out that it isn’t his fault at all- it’s the fault of whoever did the transfer at Buena Vista Home Video.

Correction On Dogma SE DVD Print…

June 19th @ 9:34 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad

  • Alright, I’ll take full responsibility for this one — In haste reading Vincent’s post yesterday, I mistakenly misread that the Cannes print would be used for the Dogma Special Edition DVD. This isn’t true. Kevin prefers the theatrical print, so the exact same transfer of the film on the current DVD will be on the SE DVD as well. All the extra scenes, including the stuff from the Cannes version of the film, will be in the 100-minute deleted scenes supplement. Sorry for misleading anyone, it was just careless reading on my part.

Dogma Special Edition DVD Details…

June 18th @ 4:25 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira

  • We’ve been forgetting to mention this for over a week now, but it’s some very cool news that you may have missed unless you regularly surf the View Askew WWWBoard. Vincent Pereira revealed that a second commentary was recorded for inclusion on the already-loaded Dogma Special Edition DVD due sometime this fall (no official release date has yet been announced). This second track was with just he, Kevin, and producer Scott Mosier. It focuses more on the making of the flick itself, rather than the more whimsical track with Affleck, Lee, & others. Both tracks should be worth the time to listen to, for sure. Add those to the brand new documentary, the extended (by 8 minutes) Cannes print of the flick, AND (our favorite) an approximately 100 minutes of deleted scenes, and you’ve got what’s probably going to be the best DVD to hit the market yet. And we’re not just saying that because we’re fans. It’s gonna be damn cool.

Chasing Amy DVD: EXCLUSIVE First Look Review!

June 13th @ 4:15 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well folks, you’ve asked, pleaded, and begged, and now, it’s finally a reality. Chasing Amy is on DVD shelves everywhere here in the US (it’s a week or two late in Canada due to a shipment problem from the distributor, sorry folks). We took a few hours and sat down with this disc last night, checked out the menus, watched the movie from start to finish, and checked out all the extras. Wanna know what we thought? Read our EXCLUSIVE REVIEW of the disc here, one of the first (if not THE first) reviews of the release on the web!

Thanks again to Criterion for supplying us with the test pressing of the disc. Though it arrived just a day before the disc’s release, it’s the thought that counts, and it seems that the other big DVD sites got nothing at all, so we’re very appreciative.

Even More On The ‘Amy’ DVD…

June 7th @ 6:36 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Jay Gunn, Ken Plume

Since we’ve mentioned it, a few more questions have come up on the disc so we just wanted to clear the air on a few things. The disc has always been a joint effort from Criterion & Buena Vista, we just weren’t sure who was putting their name on the release. So this disc WILL be an official “Criterion Collection” disc, and contain all the material that was found on the Criterion laser released a couple years back. All the deleted scenes, commentary, stills, and other good stuff will all be in here, along with a NEW anamorphic transfer supervised by DP Dave Klein and a new special DVD introduction done by Kevin. Buena Vista’s handling all the release and promotion of the disc, though.

Above you’ll find scans of the DVD’s front and back, courtesy of DVD File. Click them for larger versions.

Unfortunately, we’ve got no contacts at Buena Vista anymore and hear that the other DVD review sites have the same problems in dealing with them, so it looks like any reviews on the disc’s material from us will have to wait until sometime next week, once our mail-order copies arrive and we’ve had a chance to look at the thing. We’ll keep ya posted.

Vincent On The Upcoming Dogma SE DVD…

June 7th @ 6:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Vincent Pereira, Nolan Reese

  • When asked a question about the way cool new Fight Club DVD (A great DVD and a fantastic flick, see it), Vincent dropped some big details on the upcoming Dogma Special Edition DVD. Check it out!
The “FIGHT CLUB” DVD is indeed a great DVD of a great film. The “DOGMA” S.E. DVD will be at least as good, but different. It won’t be as “interactive” and tech oriented as FIGHT CLUB, but that’s the nature of the beast- David Fincher is intrinsically a very technically oriented filmmaker, and that comes through in the focus of this DVD- there’s tons of really cool techie material on how the effects were done, etc. Kevin has always been more about what the material MEANS, the that’ll be the focus of the “DOGMA” DVD- the meaning of the film, and the controversy surrounding it’s release. This is the way to approach DVD special editions in my book- each film is different and should be approached differently. A highly technical film made by a great filmmaker like David Fincher should be approached from a largely technical standpoint, whereas someone like Kevin who is more about the ideas shouldn’t neccessarily be approached that way when it comes to one of his flicks hitting DVD.

Right now, we’ve got a 40-minute (approx.) documentary (focusing largely on the controversy), two commentary tracks (one with visual clips like MALLRATS), nearly 100-minutes worth of deleted and extended scenes, an odds-and-ends “bloopers” clip reel, Scott Mosier’s storyboards for the action sequences, and several other goodies that we’re still working on. Belive me, this mother is going to be bursting at the seams.

Correction On Amy DVD Release…

June 6th @ 6:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Okay, so we were wrong. A few DVD reviewers have been kind enough to write in and let us know that the Chasing Amy DVD is being handed by BUENA VISTA, and NOT Criterion. We apologize to Criterion for assuming that they were handling it without checking further. Bad assumption on our part. We’re told Criterion are very good about sending screener copies to sites and are quite cooperative with their releases.

From what we’ve heard, however, Buena Vista PR has been very uncooperative with DVD review sites (surprise surprise) which explains why we haven’t heard a peep from anyone on Buena Vista about reviewing the disc, and why we’ll still remain without preview copies of the disc to give you an advanced scoop. So, no progress really, but we wanted to set the record straight. Thanks to all who wrote in!

  • Chasing Amy DVD In A Week…We Guess.

    June 6th @ 2:15 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

Well, it seems that the day that will answer one of the most oft-asked e-mail questions e-mails in News Askew history is just a week away, but it hardly seems like it!

Criterion‘s Chasing Amy DVD is scheduled to street one week from today, on June 13th. Unfortunately, we’ve yet to get a peep out of Criterion on the disc, aside from an e-mail scolding us a while back when we posted rumors that it wouldn’t make the release date. We’ve asked a couple times for a review copy of the disc and received no response. So, we’re sorry to say, it doesn’t look like there will be any advanced review of this disc. It’s sad that Criterion doesn’t cooperate with DVD sites, since it doesn’t seem anyone else has received a copy, either, but we’re especially disappointed that we’re not able to bring you an advanced look at one of just four flicks that this site was first created to celebrate.

We’ll likely just place orders for the disc online from one of the discount stores and drop a review up here once we’ve gotten our copies and had a chance to watch the flick, but it may be later than usual. We hear that the new anamorphic print is absolutely perfect, and that there’s a new introduction on the disc from Kevin, but that’s all we know as far as new material over the already seen Criterion laserdisc. We’re sure those of you who’ve yet to see the Criterion laser stuff will dig it, though. There’s a lot of great material on that disc, for sure.

Anyway, to sum it up, we suppose the disc will just quietly arrive next week. Sorry that we weren’t able to get better coverage on this for you, but we’re at the mercy of the studio and it looks like this time we’re just not going to get nice treatment (like the air expressed review copies Columbia/Tristar gave us when Dogma’s DVD was released). We’ll keep you posted as best we can on this one.

CORRECTION: Amy DVD Release OK, & New Transfer Info!

    May 10th @ 2:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The story here previously mentioned that there were troubles with Criterion and the June 13th release date for the Chasing Amy DVD. Well, there’s nothing like posting a completely wrong story to get an immediate response back — Very soon after the story went live (and as you can see from talkbacks, folks got irate), we were immediately contacted by Criterion and informed that this could not be further from the truth. They are current in check disc phase and poised to make the June 13th release date. We do hea that there was a small problem with using the theatrical trailer on the DVD — No idea if the music is going to be changed (as in on the Dogma disc) or the trailer just removed.

Here’s the GOOD news, though. Vincent Pereira says, “Criterion sent us a check tape (in 16:9) showing some examples of the “digital restoration” work they did on AMY – if you have the laserdisc, you know there are some odd bits of negative dirt, white blotches, etc., on the film – some of these are kinda distracting, and they were on the negative so ALL prints had them. Well, Criterion went through the ENTIRE film and digitally removed some 500 small (and some not so small) picture imperfections. The check tape they sent us had like 10 examples, and it was pretty fucking stunning to say the least.” Wow. This is certainly one to buy folks! As if you weren’t gonna already!!!

Hopefully, we’ll have a check disc from Criterion or an early review of this thing so we can let you know how the new transfer (and other goodies) look.

Again, sorry for the mixup on the story, hope we didn’t cause too much anxiety.
