  • Kevin and Scott cut a new promo that’s airing in regular rotation on Opie & Anthony’s XM 202 (the “Virus” channel) about SModcast airing every Saturday night at 8PM as part of the Saturday Night Virus block of programming. If anyone’s got an audio capture for us, send it on. We’d like to share it, then archive it.
  • The voice of Jason Mewes returns in another episode of Superdeluxe’s “The Whiskers and Mr. Fancy” series titled “Mr. Stone”. The web-crafted serial features live-action cats blended with static backdrops. Mewes plays “Whiskers”.
  • Turns out that those two tees we recently mentioned had already quietly arrived over at the online Stash! Pick up the Clerks II Jay and Bob and Goodbye Horses “tuck” shirts now, and have yourself some nifty holiday gifts, for you or your pals.
  • A fairly amusing Photoshop job of Jay and Bob as Jedis appears at this contest over at the Worth1000 website. We believe you need to register with the website to view other entries, so we’ve just put the fan-crafted photo here.

  • Today’s edition of News Askew comes to you LIVE from downtown Pittsburgh, PA! Coincidentally, one of us had to head out here for the day job, NOT related to Zack & Miri — Still, it’s cool to be in the city soon to be home to the latest View Askew opus…
  • Diamond Previews reveals what looks to be 2 new Clerks II tee designs , one titled “Disco Dancing” and the sure to be controversial “Goodbye Horses”. We’ll let you know as soon as stock arrives at the Stash, of course.
  • Kevin was mentioned by ESPN’s Bill Simmons today via their website, citing that he’d love to do a podcast with him. Here’s how the transcript looks:

Matthew (Columbus,OH): Hey Bill are you a fan of Kevin Smith? He just announced his new movie will star Seth Rogen (quickly becoming a huge comedy star) and Elizabeth Banks (a very underrated and good looking actress). The best part is the title “Zach and Miri Make a Porno.” Can this movie go wrong?

Bill Simmons: (3:36 PM ET ) On paper, I like everything in that paragraph. I do like Kevin Smith – his movies always have just enough going on in them that you never feel like you wasted 90 minutes of your life. He’s on my short list of “Podcast Guests I want To Get,” along with Larry David and Hank Steinbrenner.

  • If you haven’t checked out the new Futurama DVD release, “Bender’s Big Score”, it’s well worth the watch, especially for fans. This is a true feature, and not just strung together episodes. Why the mention, you might ask? Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back’s Mark Hamill lends a voice during the film’s Christmas battle sequence. An instant, epic classic. We’re already looking forward to the next disc.
  • An interesting “Die Hard” tidbit – The extras on the newly released disc actually reveal that the appearance of Kevin’s name in the opening credits, where letters fade in gradually to form star names, intentionally appears as “S ITH” for a brief moment as a tribute to his love for the 3rd installment in the new trilogy.
  • Mallrats is briefly named dropped in the “Letters” area of the latest issue of Wizard when discussing sex and The Fantastic Four. Kevin’s mention of The Thing in ‘Rats is used as an example in the editor’s reply.
  • What’s Kevin’s famous Tonight Show “The Flying Car” sound like when done by different actors…and in another dialect? Check out this YouTube video of “The Nasol Show – Episode 3” for the answer.
  • And finally today, anyone notice the similarity to the beloved Buddy Christ in the DVD cover pose of “The Best Of The Colbert Report”? We’re just sayin’…See ya next time.

Own “Live Free or Die Hard” Today!

November 20th @ 12:01 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • “Live Free or Die Hard” hits DVD shelves today – This is the disc that contains that full length interview with Kevin and Bruce Willis as an extra, so if you want that complete collection, you gotta have this. Plus, hey, it’s Kevin in a DIE HARD MOVIE for goodness’ sake. How cool is that? You can own the film in theatrical or a slightly bloodier, more profanity-laden unrated version, which is what we’ll be picking up. Word has it that the unrated cut includes a lot more blood spurts, and some fun McClane swearing, but no major new scenes or plot changes. Get your copy “Live Free or Die Hard” on DVD tomorrow, available all over the friggin’ place.

  • So we now know the leads…But what other faces are in store for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno”? Kevin confirmed that show regular, the very funny comedian Jim Norton will have a speaking role in the flick. Norton’s a funny, raunchy dude, so we’re expecting a cool cameo, at the very least. We’ll keep you posted, of course, on all the breaking casting news with the film over the next few weeks.
  • And speaking of those leads, some silly stuff going on at the IMDB — The page for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” has happily been title-corrected, but now they’ve got the leads mis-matched. Rest assured, Zack remains Seth Rogen, this isn’t some wacky experiment.
  • We’re all for the great films of View Askew on the big screen. So, if you’re in the Missouri area, check out the “Moolah Clerksfest”. Next Thursday, November 29th, they’ll be showing Clerks and Clerks II, along with contests and giveaways. Event proceeds will subsidize the purchase of land for a new hostel in St. Louis. Sounds like something well worth attending to us.
  • Anyone catch Clerks II cameo-stealer Kevin Weisman on NBC’s “Chuck” last week? He played a gymnastic villian. Pretty evil one, too. Good stuff. We’re not sure if NBC has their stuff On Demand though we’re betting you can stream it down via NBC’s website if you like. It’s a good show, too, worth a weekly watch if you’re so inclined. After all, we gotta enjoy new TV while we can, right?
  • “Southland Tales” is now playing in limited release here in the US, and as you may have heard, generating mixed reviews. It’s one of those love-it-or-hate-it flicks, it seems. It hasn’t hit the PA heartland here, so we’ve yet to see it, though we do want to continue some small coverage on it, given Kevin’s small role. For the intrigued, like us, there’s a new interview with director Richard Kelly over at Rotten Tomatoes giving more insight into the long-awaited film. No mentions of Kev in here, but an interesting read if, like us, you’re waiting to check the flick out.
  • We want to throw a small plug up here for Eric Wilkinson, whose View Askew claim to fame was designing the “Drawing Flies” cover many years ago. He’s now producing movies and has a new film, “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth”. It hit DVD last week (11/13) and is now available at all the major retailers: Wal-Mart, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. Support another New Jersey filmmaker and check it out.
  • And last, but certainly not least, take a peek at some new work from Marilyn Ghigliotti (“Clerks”), a short film called “Roadkill” that she did earlier this year. Enjoy, and we’ll see ya back here next time, undoubtedly with news from the world of “Zack and Miri” and much more. Thanks for stopping by.

Southland Tales: Anyone Seen It?

November 8th @ 11:43 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Pete Graham

  • Southland Tales will hit theaters in just one week (this Wednesday, the 14th) — So has anyone caught it yet? We’ve all heard the rumors that Kevin’s role is still there, but possibly cut down to help with the runtime. In a recent interview, Richard Kelly cited the fact that it’s one of the plots he was saddest to see go. So we’re wondering — How much Kevin do we got? Let us know, or comment to this post. The film itself is very ambitious, and rumor has it, will baffle audiences — Just the kind of flick we LOVE. We can’t wait to see it.

With the release, of course, comes the press. As this isn’t a View Askew production, we won’t be covering every single tiny news item, but just some major stuff — And of course, anything where Kevin’s name comes up. Like this Wired interview for example, where Kelly credits Kevin for his help in getting the prequel comics for the film out there:

Wired: You also penned a bunch of comic books that give backstory on the film…

Kelly: Kevin Smith helped publish them. There’s going to be a bound collection — like a graphic novel — available in bookstores soon.

Also, the official film soundtrack was released earlier this week. It’s a sick soundtrack that features unreleased songs from Moby and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. A complete track listing can be found at Amazon or the Milan Records site. We’re stoked to hear that Moby score in the film.

See “Southland Tales” next week for a unique experience at the theater AND to support Richard Kelly, a longtime friend and fan of View Askew. And of course…Don’t forget, Kevin’s in it!

  • SModcast returns with another new episode today — Writer’s strikes be damned! Kevin returns with special guest Jason Mewes for a Jay & Bob-cast, another near-hour of entertainment and musings. While it’s unsure on what the schedule will become when “Zack and Miri” kicks into full gear, it’s nice to see Kevin keeping with the scheduile, the best reason to look forward to Mondays every week. This edition:

SModcast 36: I’ll Stop the World and Melt with Mewes –

In which a pair of relics from mid-90’s pop culture talk about getting old and boring, examine the conditions under which sexual congress with the breathing challenged might be acceptable, discuss the alternative brances of a family tree, and take “Paper or plastic?”to a whole new level.

Note – SModcasts that have started airing on XM during the weekends have, for some reason, had some or all of the music contained in them removed. We assume this may be a rights issue. Next episode brings us SModcast #37, which we can’t help but think will have some sort of significance and surprises.

  • Props come in today from a fan who enjoyed Malc’s “Small Town, Gay Bar” via the new Netflix streaming media player — The quality’s as good as getting the DVD, but immediate and direct to your PC as a Netflix subscriber. Check out the technology, and Malcs acclaimed documentary, today!
  • We’re big Jason Lee fans around here, so we’re always happy to report new film work for the guy — Especially this latest one, “The Other Side”, which looks to be a fantasy film for adults , a big change from all that kid-friendly fare he’s been doing lately. The loglines, cast, and fantasy nature have us intrigued. We’ll keep you posted on the latest updates.
  • Speaking of stuff to watch DVD, check out the funny turn by our own Jason Mewes in “The Tripper”, now in stores for rental or purchase. The horror/comedy marks the directorial debut of David Arquette, and the first in a recent string of genre turns for Mewes.

  • What’s Kevin have to say about the “Heroes: Origins” cancellation? This simple line:

May be temporary, may be permanent. Either way, I’ve still got three quarters of a script done (we weren’t gonna be shooting ’til March), so if they decide game on at a later date, I’ll be ready.

We’re betting the story will see the light of day, eventually, somehow. Even if it’s only in a NBC-funded comic form. We’ll keep you posted on the project, of course.

  • If you’re missing the coolest new show of the season, now is the time to catch up! “Reaper” has now been made available for purchase and download this week on iTunes. All episodes so far are now up there, including Kevin’s and the 5 subsequent episodes. The show’s starting to run its larger arc now, with some interesting subplots carrying over each week. Now’s the time to get on board if you’re not already watching.
  • A slight correction to our Alanis newsbite from last update — In regards to your recent post about Alanis. After J&SBSB and Dogma, she did appear in one more film. While dating Ryan Reynolds, she had a role in his movie “Just Friends”. Oddly enough, that movie takes place in Jersey. Enjoy your weekend. We’ll check back in with any breaking news.

  • An already impressive guest list gets even cooler with the addition of Jason Mewes. He’ll appear at HorrorHound Weekend in Indianapolis next month, November 16 thru the 18th. We assume this is again to pimp Netherbeast, Inc. Jason’s always generous with the fans, so if you’re in the area, don’t miss him. No official news of his signing times or days, though Saturdays are always a best bet for the big guests.
  • Alanis Morissette is set to make another rare film appearance, her first since “Jay and Bob” and “Dogma” (though she’s been seen in some TV projects lately). Principal photography on the Philip K. Dick-authored story RADIO FREE ALBEMUTH commenced this month on locations in and around Los Angeles. From the press release:

Alanis plays Sylvia, first seen in one of Nick’s (Jonathan Scarfe) visions as a glamorous, phenomenal singer, who shows up in real life as an ordinary woman looking for a secretarial job. Recently declared in remission from lymphoma—which has puzzled her doctors, who thought it would be fatal—Sylvia gets a job at Nick’s record label as a secretary, where her spirituality and visions soon make her a soul-mate with Nick.

Commenting of her first dramatic lead role, as a mysterious woman with prophetic visions and a beautiful singing voice, Alanis says, “I am a big fan of Philip K. Dick’s poetic and expansively imaginative books. I feel blessed to portray Sylvia, and to be part of this story being told in film.”

We wish her luck and hope to see her back in a Smith film one of these days, as well.

  • According to the IMDB, Kevin’s new DVD of the recent Red Bank birthday Q&A show is going to be called “Kevin Smith: Sold Out”. The disc is still being edited together, so we don’t have any release info for you at this time.
  • Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone”, hits theaters this weekend, and wow, is this ever a fantastic film. Critics love it, audiences love it, and articles everywhere are praising Affleck for his first feature. Here’s what Kevin’s got to say:

Affleck’s directorial debut hits theaters today, and it’s getting killer reviews.

This flick is a Goddamned must-see, folks. I’ve seen it three times and it’s awesome; a total awards contender, too.

Peep the trailer here. Then go check out the actual flick. You won’t regret it.

Yes, that’s an amazing 92% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes at presstime. WOW. One of the best reviewed of the year, folks. See it on the big screen and tell your friends. Support Ben, a longtime friend of View Askew. And big congrats to him on this one. We don’t think a first time director has ever scored this high.

  • The Friday edition of G4’s “Attack of the Show” mentioned Kevin’s entertaining silentbobspeaks.com blog in their ‘Blogwatch’ segment. Afterwards, hosts Kevin and Olivia were talking about how they hope Kevin watches their show. If you missed it, it re-airs at various times over the weekend, and they also sometimes post video at their site.
  • The folks at Drunk Duck show their View Askew love once again, via a couple funny little references in this Where’s Waldo style image. See if you can’t track them down.

Anything Else Up In The Blogs?

October 11th @ 7:18 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by

  • Kevin’s been keeping up with both the online blogs and SModcast regularly, so we hope that you’re making stops at Silent Bob Speaks, Myspace, and Quick Stop Entertainment part of your regular web travels. We’re going to stick with posting stuff from these sites that we feel might be newsworthy, but leave the more day-to-day type stuff for you to discover at those sites on your own. That being said, while the big news from Kevin’s last week of blogging surrounded the current, well, state of “Red State”, there were a few other snippets we figured we’d pull out for the news archives as well. Keep in mind, this stuff comes from last week, as Kevin has been blogging usually over the weekends, summarizing the previous week in one shot.

Here’s a few random passages from here, and our interpretation of possible hints that lie within:

“I spend most of day buried in my office, writing the second draft of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” Even with the new stuff, I wind up taking the page count down to 110.” [NA: Sounds like we’re getting close to a good running time! Won’t be long til the scripts final now.]

“I wake up and do a radio tour for the book and “Reaper”, doing about ten or fifteen radio stations around the country.” [NA: If anyone has any audio captures of these interviews, let us know.]

“…I finally get to see “Spider-Man 3? – a movie in which many people cry, sing, and dance.” [NA: Sounds about right to us – nice assessment.]

“…I head home, talking to Carla about “Zack and Miri” casting en route.” [NA: We can’t wait until some of this casting is finally revealed. They’re doing a fantastic job keeping it under wraps!]

“…I shower and head to lunch with Dawn Ostroff, head of the CW, at Ca Del Sole.” [NA: More Reaper on the way, or perhaps another directing stint for another show?]

As always, the full story is available free, 24/7 via MySpace and Silent Bob Speaks! We’ll pick through the next blog entry with more observations, of course. Until then…
