- Thanks to a loyal scooper, here’s a direct scan of that Playboy magazine mention from this month, where Kevin is named as one of today’s great actor-directors. As always, click to blow up through inline image viewing magic, to see what great company Kev’s in the sidebar with.
- We know you saw “Jersey Girl” and the famous “Sweeney Todd” ending…But it was also a surprise how many folks who saw the film weren’t familiar with the musical. With Tim Buton’s new version, now available in trailer format at Yahoo, maybe the joke (and performances) will be more generally understood by audiences for future viewings.
- And last, but certainly not least today, Rosario Dawson makes Film Threat’s list of “The Fifty Best Breasts In Movie History”. You can watch various YouTube videos for each of the gals as evidence. Of course, her “Clerks II” rooftop scene is their proof in this case. Enjoy, and we’ll see ya…SOON!

- The new fact-based Brian De Palma flick “Redacted” is benefitting from a lot of buzz lately. A teaser trailer recently posted at Aint It Cool features several sound snippets from the flick, one of which directly references a famous “Clerks” line, relating it to the war in Iraq. The film sounds incredibly hard-hitting and a like must-see, certainly controversial. For an alterate site, you can also watch the teaser at AOL Movies.
- Clerks rightfully makes the list in this new LA Times article on “Alternate Movie Endings”.
“Clerks” (1994)
Writer-director Kevin Smith didn’t know how to end his low-budget comedy, so he had a gunman enter the convenience store and shoot the main character, Dante (Brian O’Halloran), during a robbery. Then, a man (played by Smith) enters the store and steals cigarettes. The ending made it through only one public screening before Smith was persuaded to give the film a more upbeat ending, which no doubt helped it become a smash hit but prevented “Clerks II” from being a zombie movie.

- Our pal Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone”, has been benefitting from great word of mouth from those who have screened it early. Today, Collider.com provides us with FIVE NEW CLIPS from the film, the first we’ve seen clippage (other than the trailer) anywhere. The film hits theaters everywhere on October 19th, just a few short weeks from now.
- In DVD news today, Jason Lee’s UNDERDOG arrives December 18th. If you missed it in the theater, your kids may dig it — Plus, you get to hear ‘ol Lee throughout. And speaking of Lee, the great Season Two of “My Name Is Earl” is now available everywhere — The Target edition features a lenticular cover and a mini Earl poster. The cover, which features the Earl characters as cartoon characters, is way cool.
- And finally today, in Retro news, it’s great when this stuff comes back to us — We promoted a Dogma panel with Chris Rock and Kevin on Charlie Rose way back in 1999 — Now, that very show is available on YouTube! Skip to around 25 minutes into the program for the interview. We’ll see you again soon, thanks for dropping by today.

- The trailer for the much anticipated Richard Kelly epic “Southland Tales” hit Yahoo today, and along with it, our first look at Mr. Kevin Smith as he appears in the film — And wow, talk about a Kevin like we’ve never seen before! It’s almost tough to see the dude behind the makeup, but as soon as you focus on the face, particularly the eyes, it’s totally Kev. Slashfilm were the first to take a screen grab and play the guessing game of just who the photo featured. Southland Tales hits theaters on November 9th, 2007 — Kevin’s weelchair-bound character of Simon Thiery will appear in the new cut of the film, though the jury’s still out on just how much screentime we’ll see (though early reports we ran had it as a cameo-sized role).
For more online commentary, you can also peep out FilmBuff Newsreel. And of course, don’t miss your chance to check out the full trailer at Yahoo Movies in all flavors of Quicktime, including that beautiful 1080p HD!

- Kevin on DVD alert! Season 6 of “Smallville” arrived on DVD this week. As the character was featured in quite a few of the episodes last year, one of the special features in the set is called “Green Arrow: The Legend of the Emerald Archer”. It’s your basic look back at the creation of the character in the comics and his transformation through the years, ending with his appearances on Smallville. Kevin makes a couple of appearances, along with many other creators, giving their perspective on Ollie. Worth checking out, as Kevin’s rebirth of the character brought the character into the spotlight, even earning him a place in the recent US postal collection of comic-themed stamps.
- Recent blogs had Kev discussing the “bear” community during a photo session conducted alongside “Small Town, Gay Bar” director and friend Malcolm Ingram. After Elton posts a small shout-out to the blog entry along with the photo, which will be the cover of the December issue of “A Bear’s Life”. Yup, there’s a magazine for just about everything these days!
- Kevin gets quick mention in the odd online video blog “Ask A Ninja”, as part of Question 53.

- Is Kevin’s role still solid for the new cut of “Southland Tales”? You betcha, at least according to the final poster art from Cinematical which includes Mr. Smith’s name in the credits. Richard Kelley has put a TON of work in this film to get it just right, and we’re very anxious to see the final results of his new cut. The film is currently set to hit theaters on November 9th, just a couple short months away.
- TheEagle.com runs an article on why people should listen to DVD commentary tracks, and lists Kevin as the “master” (and rightfully so):
The master of the funny commentary track, though, is director Kevin Smith. Smith knows no boundaries and will often reveal candid stories about the making of his films. His tracks go into information such as which crew members Jason Mewes slept with on the set of Clerks II, what actors from Mallrats Smith will never work with again and the innermost details of Smith’s sex life. Smith has even made a few commentary tracks for films that he has nothing to do with, such as Donnie Darko and Road House. Fans of Smith’s raunchy and gossipy style should also check out the Evening with Kevin Smith DVD series. These two DVDs each feature several hours of Smith’s famously hilarious Q&A sessions.
- It wouldn’t be NewsBites without a YouTube video now, would it? Some fans are trying to get Kevin’s notice with a Bluntman-themed trailer they put together. For an amateur job, it’s not bad, with some actual CGI effects and everything. The two minute segment, titled “Bluntman Beyond” is available at YouTube. For details from its creators, visit their site. Good one, guys. We’ll be back! Server work continues, so we do apologize for any slowness or errors you might see. We’ll let ya know.

- Retro alert! You can now view the full video (and audio, of course) for the original Clerks review from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert via their site archive. Watch for the Ebert praise which caused so many folks to seek the original out back in 1994. It’s a great watch, you can see that Ebert immediately connected with Kevin and the world of View Askew — The late Siskel also heaps similar praise. It’s great to see this online after all these years — A welcome addition to the multimedia archive.
- Thanks to YouTube, you can now peep out Kevin’s brief appearance on the DVD extras of “Hot Fuzz”. The segment featured is a brief moment from the Q&A session held after an early screening of the film. Seek out Fuzz on DVD now, another inspired entry from this brilliant team. Can’t wait to see what they do next (and secretly hope Kevin might be invited on board for a cameo in it somehow).
- /film takes another route in confirming that Jason Bateman is not attached to play any roles in “Zack and Miri Make A Porno”, despite rumors that were running rampant otherwise. A couple weeks back, we checked with Kevin and
confirmed that the rumor was just that, and now, the /film guys have briefly spoken with Bateman as well. So, the entire cast of the film, even the desired cast, remain a total mystery. Speculating’s always fun, though — We’ll keep you informed of any whispers going ’round.
- FREE EARL! The new season of quite possibly the best sitcom on TV right now, “My Name Is Earl”, starts back on NBC soon. Fans of the show recall our hero was left in the slammer at the end of last season — Now, word has it that he’ll remain there for the start of the new one, and NBC’s got a great campgain running to promote it. You can watch the complete “Free Earl” music video (done “We Are The World” style) as well as a web-exclusive “behind-the-scenes” both courtesty of NBC.com. Earl returns to NBC with a 1 hour season premiere on September 27th.
- Over at his blog, promoting his new film “The Nines”, director John August releases a theatrical podcast commentary which they’re promoting for the film. He does, however, mention that Clerks II did it first (though this likely will be the first time it’s out coinciding with a theatrical release, as the Clerks II track did get pulled and saved for the eventual DVD due to fear of it interfering with audiences). Here’s the entry:
“But in the age of iPods, there’s really no reason why audio commentary has to be relegated to DVD. That’s why Ryan Reynolds and I recorded one last week for The Nines which is now yours to download. (47MB, right-click to save to disk)
This isn’t an original idea, by the way. Kevin Smith recorded an in-theater commentary for Clerks II, though I can’t find confirmation he released it into the wild. (Someone in the comments section will know.)”
- And finally today, on a light note, with a name like Kevin Smith, you know there’s gonna be others — This “Kevin Smith Show” features a gentleman of that namesake doing a podcast on the paranormal. Enjoy, perhaps between SModcasts? See ya next time!

- GREAT news about the DVD release of “Live Free or Die Hard” comes to us via Movieweb today. While it seems that the previously mentioned Blu-Ray version will only include the theaterical version of the film, there WILL be a fully UNRATED cut of the flick as part of the two-disc special edition on standard DVD. Hooray! Not only that, but disc two of said edition will indeed house the complete conversation held on the Fox lot between Bruce and Kevin. The running time’s listed at 23 minutes, so it’s a bit shorter than was filmed, we believe, but still, better than nothing!
