  • Coming Soon checks in with the DVD specs of the upcoming Blu-Ray release of “Live Free or Die Hard” (November 20th in North America, an earlier October 28th internationally). The big extra we’re all waiting for is the extended chat that Kevin held with Bruce Willis on the FOX lot, though no specific word on its inclusion here. Of interest, though is an exclusive video game that will only be available on the Blu-ray disc, which features (we believe, at least) Kevin as The Warlock:

…actor and director commentaries and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”

“Black Hat Intercept!” begins with a warning from ‘The Warlock’ (cult-classic writer, producer and director Kevin Smith) that a computer virus has been placed inside an unwitting Internet company’s mainframe by the infamous cyber-terrorist, Thomas Gabriel. As the team leader from inside the surveillance van, players must guide an agent into the building, outwit the building’s security systems and personnel without being detected and then wipe the hard drive clean before the virus destroys the U.S.

Additionally, the BD debut of the “Die Hard Trilogy” comes locked and loaded with numerous bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, actor and director commentaries, visual effect breakdowns, alternate endings, side-by-side comparisons and much, much more.

We were hopeful for an edgier cut of the film as well, after the whole R vs. PG-13 debate, though it looks to not be the case here — We’ll see that stuff as extra scenes. No word on Kevin’s involvement with the DVD commentary due to his cameo role, though the guy never met a DVD track he didn’t like — We’re hopeful that the man’s involved as much as possible on this one. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.

And by the way — The disc will also support the new D-Box chair which, believe it or not, rumbles and moves in sync with the film. Basically, it turns your living room into a ride! Pretty nifty, though at over $10,000 for the system, not an accessory we’ll be able to afford anytime soon. Ah, technology.

  • Some kind, albeiet brief, words about Clerks II’s DVD release in South Africa are here courtesty of the “Tonight” website.
  • Aint It Cool runs a positive review of “Gone Baby Gone” including some praise for director Ben Affleck (minor spoilers in their review) :

If this is an indication of his skills, I’d like to see more from Affleck. He has pace, shots, and construction down.

  • And finally today, has the Flying Car become the Flying Saucer? We’ll take two. See ya next time!

  • You addicted to the Nintendo Wii as much as this webmaster? Then you might find these Mii images from Flickr and ShowMii amusing. The Mii’s are the graphical avatars that you create to represent yourself on the system. They’re pretty fun and versatile.
  • Variety is reporting that our pal Ben Affleck may be joining the already impressive ensemble of “He’s Just Not Into You”:

Affleck in talks to star in comedy

New Line is in negotiations with Ben Affleck to round out the cast of ensemble comedy “He’s Just Not That Into You,” with Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen producing through their Flower Films banner.

Shooting starts Sept. 10 in Los Angeles, with Ken Kwapis (“License to Wed”) directing.

Along with Affleck and Barrymore, “You” will star Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson and Justin Long.

Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (“Never Been Kissed”) adapted the bestseller about modern-day relationships by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo, who worked together on “Sex and the City.” The book focuses on how men and women often misconstrue the intentions of the opposite sex.

  • That famous “Robot Chicken” mention of Scott Mosier that we mentioned back in March of 2006 can now be witnessed on YouTube. Enjoy the Mosier goodness!

The DVD Reviews Are Coming!

August 25th @ 10:03 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Cole R

  • Two fresh DVDs arrived at the News Askew offices this week, and we’re ripping through the shrink wrap as we speak. “Small Town, Gay Bar” has been out for a couple of weeks now, and is available for purchase through the Stash SIGNED by director Malcolm Ingram. This memorable documentary features a bunch of extras which we’ll be diving into for a closer look. In the meantime, check out a brief mixed review of the film through JoBlo. The film really is quite compelling, and crafted and edited together very nicely.

And then we have something we’re quite excited to see, as we haven’t seen it before – Marvel’s “Then and Now” Q&A with Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, hosted by Kevin Smith, is now available for purchase! The disc contains of course the full program along with heaps of extras, including bonus interviews, behind-the-scenes, and more. You can purchase your copy via the Then And Now site, with proceeds benefitting the awesome Hero organizataion. This one’s another must-have for your View Askew DVD collection.

Watch for more in-depth coverage on both of these discs here at News Askew next week.

  • IGN wisely cites “Clerks: The Cartoon” as the 5th best movie to TV transition of all time:
#5: Clerks: The Animated Series (2000)

Taking place in the same world with the same characters as Kevin Smith’s hit independent film (of the same name), Clerks never quite found its audience and as such was cancelled after airing only two episodes. With the -uncensored- DVD release, however, this comedic animated take on Smith’s raucous film was given new life, becoming one of the first DVDs to find a larger audience in DVD sales than in its television viewership.

Fans of the Clerks films, as well as other Kevin Smith movies, will recognize the main characters of the series: Dante Hicks, Randal Graves, and Jay and Silent Bob. Focusing the series around Dante and Randal, Clerks followed the same format as its film counterpart by taking in the day to day happenings of Dante (the convenience store worker) and Randal (the video store ‘worker’), while spicing it up with guest appearances by Jay and Silent Bob. While the names and the basic premise is the same, the show took drastic steps to separate itself from the shadow of the hit indie film by taking the four lead characters and placing them in wildly unpredictable and random situations. By changing up the locales and the pace of the program, Clerks became less about clever conversations and more about madcap comedy.

With storylines such as Dante and Randal taking down their new villain Leonardo Leonardo (voiced by Alec Baldwin), Clerks was a refreshing bit of random comedy which was never given a chance by ABC. Aired out of order, hilarious bits such as the second episode of the series being a flashback clip-show, were never fully realized… leaving us to scratch our heads asking why they were remembering such arbitrary memories. These problems were solved, however on DVD, making us remember just how funny this series could have been, as well as how successfully it was able to work off of its film property. If you have never seen this series, it is worth watching for the final few minutes of the fourth episode – where the show ran out of money and was forced to send the rest of the episode over to Korea to be completed.

We can’t get enough of the stories Kevin tells about this show, regarding aborted scripts and plans for the eventual direct to DVD films. They can’t come fast enough, we say! Pop over to IGN to check out the full list.

  • Kevin made an appearance at the premiere for the hilarious “Superbad” last week. Here’s a press photo from the event. More news later! Thanks for dropping by.

  • Kevin and Scott’s weekly podcast, SModcast, made this week’s MUST LIST in Entertainment Weekly magazine. Make sure you subscribe today so you don’t miss any episodes!
  • We love this ad for the Screen Actor’s Guild’s “Sagindie” branch, which appeared recently in MovieMaker Magazine. Click the pic for a closer look. Not only a funny ad, but we’re happy to see that Kevin and View Askew’s influence continues to promote the indie spirit. Yeah!
  • AZCentral posts a short new interview with Kevin, the main topic of which is “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” — However, due to the Rosario involvement in the piece, it may have been conducted a few weeks back. Here’s a snippet or two:

Q: You’ve taken supporting roles in other people’s films – “Catch and Release,” “Live Free or Die Hard.” Is that like a vacation for you?

A: It is kind of a vacation. It’s fun to do. It’s certainly nothing that I would make my primary job. But if stuff comes along and I’ve got the time – and it doesn’t require heavy lifting, because I’m certainly nobody’s actor – I’m all game for it.

Q: “Clerks II” proved there’s still juice left in Jay and Silent Bob (characters played by Jason Mewes and Smith, respectively). Do you think these guys could do a movie in their 50s?

A: I dunno, man. That’d be tough. I always thought it’d interesting somewhere down the road to see how they aged. But I think I’ll just kind of reserve that for if we ever do another “Clerks” look-in on Dante and Randal. Like, people have asked, “Are you going to do ‘Clerks III’?” I’m like, “Maybe not until I’m in my 40s.” Because it would be nice to peek in on those two characters every decade and see how they progress. “Clerks” was in my 20s and “Clerks II” was in my 30s, so maybe “Clerks III” would be in my 40s. Even then, I’m like, “How do you handle Jay and Bob in their 40s?”

  • Big news for you Hollywood Stock Exchange addicts: The stock for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” went IPO today at a price of $20. Happy trading!
  • Don’t forget, DVD completists and Kevin fans, TMNT is now available for purchase and rental on DVD, featuring a fun cameo from the voice of Kevin Smith himself. Check your local shelves, rental shop, or NetflixM type joint to snag yourself a copy.
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy, have released their RiffTrax for The Bourne Identity! Rifftrax continue the MST3K tradition of mocking movies as you watch, through the use of MP3 downloadable files that you sync up with a film’s DVD. Watch a hilarious sample HERE. With the Damon Askew connection and all these MSTie alums on board, this one’s sure to be an instant classic.
  • A scooper caught the brand new, recut Mallrats X verison airing on pay channel “IndiePlex”, one of those ancillary Encore networks you get when you subscribe to premium services. Pretty cool stuff! A quick search over at the Encore site did confirm many upcoming airings of Mallrats on their various stations, but none confirm the version. If anyone knows more, let us know — For those of you who were silly enough to skip buying the extended disc, this could be a great chance to preview all that you’re missing. We’ll let you know if we hear of Mallrats Extended airing anywhere, though encourage you to buy the amazing DVD from the Stash — One of the greatest that View Askew ever produced.
  • For the interested or intrigued, here’s those lego version of Jay and Bob that were spotted on Facebook earlier this week. For some added weekend fun, make your own Lego creations for free online! See ya — Thanks for stopping by News Askew today.

  • Here’s a bit more press on the scheudled Jay Mewes appearance at the Eerie Horror Film Festival, scheduled for October 10-14 in Erie, PA. He’ll be there to support his latesthorror/comedy, “Netherbeast Incorporated”, a humorous film about vampires set in modern day corporate America. Some other cool genre guests on the slate, too.
  • The Quick Stop makes number 5 on OverDugg’s list of top ten filming locations viewed with Google Earth. You may have to skip past an ad to view the actual page.
  • SuperMax hysteria has made it to the UK though at least they’re not reporting it as fact. Once again, let’s let the press know – Kevin’s in no way attached to this! We were all just speculating! Sigh.
  • With all the casting speculation happening, Video ETA runs down a list of possible actors for the role of Zack in Kev’s next flick. See anyone ya like? Got some other ideas? Let us know.
  • We’re not sure who the true author of this article is as we have the same quote on two pieces (unless this is from a press conference), but Seth Rogen recently name-dropped Kevin when discussing his take on “The Green Hornet”
(as Kevin is widely known as having done a draft of the flick at one point). Both Rotten Tomatoes and The Winnipeg Sun have small blurbs on the potential project:

The Green Hornet property was under Kevin Smith’s banner for a long time: the ultimate comic fanboy wrote a script but decided not to direct it. Rogen will not take the opportunity to read Smith’s draft.

“I’m actually friends with Kevin Smith and he said I probably could read it if I wanted. I don’t want to. I have no interest right now in reading it I would say. At some point.”

  • Hey, you can certainly respect the guy for wanting to do his own thing.

  • With the notion of a “Thor” movie out there, this E! Online article mentions talk of an actor near and dear to us as a good possible fit for the title role:

This pretty much has Josh Holloway written all over it,” wrote IceTruckDexter on cinematical.com, while others suggested Matthew McConaughey, Jason Mewes (must be a hair thing), New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban (lately an assassin in The Bourne Supremacy) and, of course, Vincent D’Onofrio, who memorably played a beefy mechanic who was mistaken for Thor in Adventures in Babysitting in 1987.

  • The masters of humor over at “The Onion” give some good-natured ribbing to Ben Affleck today in this spoof report — Kevin’s name is also briefly mentioned.
  • Cinematical ran an article going over Kevin’s response to the nature of casting changes in Hollywood, and mentions his prom and birthday. Nice piece all in all. A quick bit:

According to Smith, Zack and Miri is currently scheduled to begin shooting in January, with pre-production gearing up somewhere around early November. That leaves plenty of time to find a new female lead, and while I adore Dawson just as much as the next guy (I swear, I have dreams about that dance in Clerks 2), there are plenty of other fish in the sea. God, I feel like I’m giving my friend advice after his prom date ditched him at the last minute for a bottle of tequila and a dude with a trust fund. And speaking of proms, Smith also posted a ton of photos from his 37th birthday bash — including pics of his MILF, er, wife, daughter and tons of other partygoers. Happy B-Day Kev, and here’s hoping your belated gift comes in the form of an actress that will totally kill in the role.

Rosario Live In NYC: TONIGHT!

August 12th @ 3:28 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Rich Drees

  • We apologize for the last minute notice, but this one just came in and we thought some of you might like to know — The lovely Ms. Rosario Dawson will be part of a Q&A after a screening of “Descent” TONIGHT (Sunday) in NYC. Here’s the full deets:

Meet Rosario Dawson, Director Talia Lugacy and Actor Marcus Patrick immediately following the 9pm show of Descent on Sunday, August 12, at the Village East Cinema.

Rosario Dawson (Kids, Sin City) produced and stars in this striking new film from director Talia Lugacy about Maya, a college student whose existence spirals downward and ultimately toward revenge after she suffers a brutal rape. The film also stars Chad Faust (Saved, Tamara) and Marcus Patrick. The New York Times says of the film: “Astonishingly, though, the film’s brutality never plays like a stunt, thanks to Ms. Dawson’s revelatory performance and Ms. Lugacy’s adventurous direction (which includes lots of long takes and metaphorically apt compositions). Hard to watch but essential to see, ‘Descent’ is at once realistic and rhetorical, and driven throughout by righteous anger that comes from an honest place.”

      Village East Cinema
181 Second Avenue (at 12th Street)

There ya have it, folks — Hopefully a few of you in the area can still make it out there tonight.

  • Both Dark Horizons, /film and Cinematical have picked up on our “SuperMax” rumor that we posted back on Tuesday. We want to go on record here and say that we were just speculating, widly speculating at that — And any announcement on that 10th film is probably at least a year away. A lot can change in that time. We like to speculate here, but that doesn’t certainly mean there’s any truth to it at all. Thanks for noticing, though.
  • More critical kudos for “Small Town, Gay Bar” (on DVD this week) from Edge Magazine today:

“This film is heartening, funny, sad, informative, and in some parts downright offensive in its candid look at reality. small town gay bar was an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and though it did not win any awards, it did receive a standing ovation. The film did hit theatres in a very limited release, but will hit its stride now on DVD, at least that is the hope of executive producer Kevin Smith, who has helped shepherd the project along since Ingram had pitched the film.”

  • “Small Town, Gay Bar” hits DVD today — Malcolm Ingram directed this fascinating documentary that many of you have not yet had the pleasure of catching, lest you’ve seen it at a film festival or Vulgarthon. We first caught
this one back in 2006’s Red Bank ‘thon and had high marks for the film. Wanna hear the background and how Kevin came to be involved? Pick up your own SIGNED copy via the Stash today. Our complete review of the set is on the way, as well.
  • Jason Lee IS David Seville in the upcoming blend of live action and CGI for the “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie, and the great Cinematical has the teaser trailer for the film with the first look at ALL the characters. Lee features prominently. That film hits theaters this Christmas, though you can hear Lee as the voice of “Underdog” at the multiplex right now.
  • “Jersey Girl” gets a quick mention in the Gloucester County Times when discussing the famous Paulsboro lighthouse:

Decked out in strands upon strands of Christmas lights and surrounded by fake snow, the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse was one of many backdrops filmed for Kevin Smith’s “Jersey Girl,” which premiered in 2004.

To the disappointment of many a lighthouse enthusiast, though, it suffered the same fate as the relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez and was left on the cutting room floor.

Despite being excluded from the film, members of the Tinicum Rear Range Lighthouse society say they have hosted upwards of 3,000 visitors per year since they opened the lighthouse to the public 10 years ago.

  • Someone took that famous “Hey” video (which Kevin shot during the Train Wreck phase) and stuck it next to the original. It’s kind fun to watch them sync together, courtesy YouTube.
  • Kevin’s GLAAD run-in during “Jay & Bob” is mentioned in this critic’s pan of “I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry” :

…But, to think that this compared to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, which got GLAAD in a hissy fit, despite Smith being so pro-gay and always putting the homophobic stuff in the mouths of his dumbest characters while everyone around them clearly knows better, it is just phenomenal. (In fact, some of the anti-gay stuff happened in editing, as Smith’s original girl group in the movie were supposed to include a lesbian couple, so his “anti-gay” stuff actually was a result of editing, unlike Sandler and James where it happened in the writing room).

GLAAD extorted $10,000 out of Smith, by way of a donation to the Matthew Shepard Foundation, as a form of public apology. Yet this movie gets the papal dispensation? Unbelievable.
