Kevin And “The Wayback Machine”…

  • Kevin birthday blogs today, looking back on the experience that would turn him into the filmmaker we all know and love today. Check out a piece from that entry right here:
Around nine at night, my friend and co-worker Vincent Pereira closed up R.S.T. Video for the evening and joined me at Quick Stop, to stock the milk and mop the floors before heading off. We got to talking about movies, as per usual, and I told him about a review I’d read in the Village Voice for a film called “Slacker” that was playing up at the Angelika Film Center, in New York City. This was a film we’d seen a trailer about a week or so prior, after Vincent and I had read about an Angelika midnight screening of “The Dark Backward” which Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton would be in attendance for and “Pig Newtons” (a prop food item that featured prominently in the flick) would be distributed at. The “Slacker” review talked about a scene in which Madonna’s pap smear was discussed, and that captured both of our imaginations. Since we two Jersey ‘burb boys had successfully gotten into and out of the city for the “Dark Backward” screening with our virtue intact once before, we decided to tempt fate with a second trip into the city that night, to check out this “Slacker” picture. And so, after closing up Quick Stop at 10:30pm, Vincent and I drove from Leonardo, NJ to the Angelika Theater on Houston in New York City to see a little movie from Austin, Texas.

This was the moment that changed my life forever.

Richard Linklater’s “Slacker”, you see, was the film that made me want to be a filmmaker too. As that flick unspooled before the wide eyes of a freshly minted twenty one year old version of me, possibility was first introduced into my sphere of influence. This film was at once remarkable and unremarkable, and I viewed it with a mixture of awe and arrogance.

  • The beautiful and famous Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas will host a midnight screening of the awesome “Mallrats” this weekend, August 4th and 5th! It’s a very cool theater — A dinner and a movie kind of place where you can order all kinds of food and have a waiter, but get to see a flick on a full sized screen. Here’s the blurb straight from The Alamo Drafthouse newsletter:

Along the way, they meet up with some friends, including Willam, a guy who stares at Magic Eye pictures, desperately trying to see the hidden image; Gwen, one of TS’s ex-girlfriends; and Jay & Silent Bob, of Clerks fame. Eventually, they decide to try and win back their significant others, and take care of their respective nemesises (TS’s girlfriend’s father, and a store clerk who hates the two for not having any shopping agenda).”

  • Catch the outstanding episode of ICONS: Kevin Smith, re-airing on Saturday, August 5th at 7:30pm and Sunday, August 6th at 5:30pm and 11:30pm only on G4 TV. One of the best retrospectives we’ve seen in a while.
  • The IMDB’s home page has a photo of Kevin in their “born today” frame on the front page. Happy Birthday, Kevin!
  • Will Ferrell, in character as Ricky Bobby (promoting his new film), was interviewed by NASCAR.COM and had this fun bit of business to say:
NASCAR.COM: … Umm yeah, moving on. Talladega Nights premiered this weekend. What were your thoughts on seeing your life story on the big screen?

Ricky Bobby: I don’t get out to the movies that much, but Bluntman and Chronic was blunt-tastic.

  • Still cleaning out some leftover Clerks II stuff from the files here: Today, some scans from local Philadelphia area papers on the flick, from the Inquirer and the Intelligencer — These came to us from none other than Chris’s GRANDMOTHER. How ’bout that huh?
  • The residents of the town of Canberra, Australia have something interesting going on: A petition they’ve started, trying to get Kevin Smith to come to their town. When word that the man is visiting Australia very soon for the Clerks II premiere broke out, the folks of Australia’s capital city thought, why not try and get him to visit? Check out the story on their website! You can also find a mention of the campaign in the Daily Telegraph this week (a Sydney based newspaper with a readership of 1,009,00), and in a short movie called “Comic Clerks” that was filmed for the campaign, uploaded to YouTube. We hope the folks will keep us posted, perhaps Kevin can stop by if he can work it into his schedule!

  • A website called Boxerjam.com put featured Kevin’s name in a word puzzle on their site today (for his birthday, perhaps?) Shots above.
  • The latest editon of MovieWeb’s “An Open Letter” column features a kind open letter to Kevin.
  • Kudos to Kevin Dilmore, writer of a new Star Trek novel, who appeared wearing a snazzy piece of clothing during a signing at Comic-Con.
  • And finally today, fans of the Clerks Cartoon may find this one fun.Bear is driving boat? How can that be? See ya next time!

  • Probably our favorite moment in Train Wreck history is the subject of the new “Call 911” video — And not just because we were there! It’s brilliantly edited and scored, and features probably the best practical joke in View Askew history — We weren’t in on it either, nor were many of the onlookers outside the Quick Stop that day…And you literally could hear gasps then stunned silence everywhere. It was incredibly well acted by Jeff and Brian especially, and just as tense everywhere as the look on Kevin’s face when he ran to pick up those paper towels. Great stuff.

Next, in “Show Us Your Marble”, learn the ropes of the Marble Club, a fascinating game that the folks on the set of Clerks II use to pass the time (and sometimes make or lose a few bucks). They come up with the most creative ways to gamble, these film crews…

Subject Cinema Podcast: Kevin Smith

  • “Subject:CINEMA”, a weekly podcast about all things cinema, has turned its focus on director/writer/producer/all around Kevin Smith with it’s first “Director’s Chair” episode this week.

The show takes a look at Smith’s body of work, from his breakthrough “Clerks” through the new release “Clerks II”, and also discuss why Smith’s films connect with a broad part of the Generation X and Generation Y audiences, among other topics.

“Subject:CINEMA” is a weekly podcast put together by two average movie fans for other average movie fans. Hosts TC Kirkham and Kim Brown don’t claim to be movie experts or film snobs, just fans, and it shows in the way the episodes come across. Clearly, they both love movies of all types, and are out to connect with other average movie fans. Since it’s premiere just last month, the show has been gaining great word of mouth among podcast fans.

  • Check out a 12 minute clip of Kevin in San Diego at the Con last week — This segment of the Q&A starts with an update on projects, then goes into a hilarious moment involving a interpreter that just shows you what kind of fun you’ll have at these things. The tightly-edited piece also features more Clerks II questions and funny answers, rapid fire. Enjoy!
  • Want more clippage today? We got another clip, this one from “Fox & Friends” with Kevin promoting Clerks II. In the 5 minute segment, they discuss Joel Siegel, the budget, Clerks, New Jersey, and lots more.
  • Clerks II took 10th place at the box office this weekend with another $3.9 million added to the take. It was also one of the best reviewed of the summer, and quite possibly the best reviewed of the Askewniverse yet. Thanks again to all of you for the support, especially those of you who saw it multiple times or brought pals along. We hope you enjoyed yourself!
  • No word on the MP3 track for Clerks II’s running commentary that we’d hoped to have for the weekend — If we learn more, we’ll let you know. Sorry for the delay.
  • A Spanish-dubbed version of Jersey Girl is airing on Telemundo sporadically. Here’s a report from a reader who caught it over the weekend:
It was quite amusing to hear everyone dubbed in Spanish, especially since “Ollie” had a very deep, older voice, but they kept all of Ben’s sighs or other non-verbal sounds. This was very noticeable when he has his big speech with Gertie in her crib. You’d hear the Spanish VO and then Ben’s sobs. They also dubbed some of the music with Spanish songs. Only watched about 15 minutes (since my recall of my high school Spanish is pretty much non-existent) and I didn’t pay enough attention to notice if they re-recorded the original songs in Spanish or put in new ones.
  • Kevin made the “cool list” on the Kevin and Bean show (KROQ). In making their list of other cool people living today, they also included Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Jason Lee, George Clooney, Dave Grohl, and a very few select others. Some good company!

  • This mini-interview from Playboy Magazine promoting Clerks II must have dropped through the cracks when we were really busy — So here it is, for archives (and your viewing pleasure).
  • Nice press from pop culture site Film 411 today on Clerks II and Jay’s dance under the “Hero of the Week” section.

Leno filling in on ‘Ebert & Roeper’

Kevin Smith to follow as guest critic while Ebert recovers

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) — Jay Leno will step into the critic’s chair next week as he takes on guest co-hosting duties for “Ebert & Roeper.”

The host of NBC’s “Tonight Show” will be the first guest co-host for the syndicated movie review show while regular co-host Roger Ebert recuperates at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after cancer surgery last month.

Leno will join Richard Roeper for the August 5-6 episode of the show, which will review the films “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Miami Vice,” “Little Miss Sunshine,” “The Night Listener” and “Shadowboxer.”

“America knows Jay as the country’s most popular late-night talk show host, but I know him as a guy who loves movies and loves to debate movies with Roger and me — both on camera and backstage at ‘The Tonight Show,’ ” Roeper said.

Because of Leno’s involvement, the Chicago-based show will briefly relocate to Los Angeles to tape the episode.

After Leno’s stint on the show, film director Kevin Smith will take over guest co-hosting duties for the August 12-13 episode. Smith — whose latest film, “Clerks II,” opened last weekend — announced the news Tuesday on his Web site.

Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times and a 30-year veteran of the show, was admitted to the hospital for salivary cancer surgery last month. The show’s distrbutor, Buena Vista Television, said he is in good condition and continues to show signs of improvement.

According to the listing at TVGuide.com, the following movies are being reviewed on the program next weekend: “Talladega Nights: Ballad of Ricky Bobby”, “Little Miss Sunshine”, “Miami Vice”, and “Shadowboxer”. So we’re expecting Kevin will be busy watching movies this week! “Miami Vice” wasn’t reviewed this weekend because the show recapped “the best films released so far in 2006”.

  • TV appearance update: Kevin will now appear on Higher Definition on HDNET this Tuesday, August 1st, at 7 PM. He’ll be on chatting up Clerks II in crystal clear High Definition!
  • Australian newspaper the Hearld Sun paper reports that Kevin will be appearing there sometimes next month (no dates yet announced) to promote Clerks II. It’s a very rare chance to see Kevin in person, so if you live in Australia, stay tuned! We’ll have more info and confirm this as soon as possible.
  • Jersey Girl’s airing August 4th at 8:00 PM on TBS Superstation. We believe this is the broadcast (non-pay TV) premiere of the flick. It’s always interesting to see what cuts they make to a View Askew flick to get it on air, so watch for it.
  • Shannon Elizabeth cites her role as Justice in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back as her favorite ever:
But the role she’s proudest of was her part in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” in 2001.

“It’s more about the character than what I did in the role,” Elizabeth said. “[Director] Kevin Smith let me play such a role and change her and do what I wanted. When they started showing ads on TV, they showed this blond girl, and all my friends were saying, ‘I saw the ad, but I didn’t see you in it.’ I had bangs, I went blond, I loved it. That’s exactly what I wanted: I wanted to be able to change my looks, be a chameleon. I don’t want people to cast me because of the way I look now; I want people to cast me because of the way I could look.

  • The deal to get a free t-shirt with a Clerks II ticket stub at Stash East has ended. Hope everyone is enjoying their shirts!

  • More photos here from the Indianapolis Downtown Comics signing with Brian and Jeff. This took place in mid-July. We heard the guys were very accomodating and entertaining!
  • UK TV channel ITV4 will be showing the hilarious Clerks Animated Series starting August 1st, weekly, at 12:55 AM (late every Monday). A great way to end your day, the shows really still hold up and are as hilarious as ever, even with multiple viewings. Enjoy!
