- Mark your calendars, Atlanta! Criminal Records reports that Kevin will appear IN PERSON in their store on Thursday, June 29th, to promote Clerks II. No further details at this time.
- Though we think he fits more under profile #14, Kevin gets a very quick mention (under #10 – The Smoker) of this list of 15 “Archetypes” you’ll meet when listening to DVD commentary tracks.
- They still mention the old August release date, but we’re pleased to see that in the Toronto Star, a magazine called ‘DO IT!’, a 42 page guide detailing fun and interesting things to do and see during the course of the summer in the General Toronto Area, cited the release of Clerks II! Clerks II: WE GOT CLIPS!!!
- Rope Of Silicon has obtained THREE, yes THREE never before seen clips from Clerks II – They’re all great quality, and even profanity-free (with just a slight edit to the third of the set). You can see the index of the clips HERE, or click below to view them individually. No real spoilers here, except for a couple funny gags, but no big plot stuff. Looks like you’ll need Windows Media Player to enjoy them:

At the age of 33, New Jersey mini-mart clerks and best friends Dante Hicks (BRIAN O’HALLORAN) and Randal Graves (JEFF ANDERSON) have it made  they work with each other, slack off all day, and get paid for it. But when the local Quick Stop that has been their entire life and livelihood suffers a cataclysm, Dante and Randal have to do the unthinkable: find new minimum-wage jobs.
The latest clips for Clerks II are pretty funny, mostly so because they are also pretty inappropriate. My favorite clip, however, still remains to be Jay going “oh” at the beginning of the song. Out of boredom, Jay goes a step further by creating a mixture of dance and the “I have a vagina” scene from Silence of the Lambs; “put the lotion in the basket!”

- A Christian-oriented entertainment program called “The Logan Show” had a View Askew reference at the end of its monologue in the most recent episode available online. Two characters play “Steve-Dave and Walt” and even utter the immortal catchphrase known for the duo. The monologue was about comic books, hence we assume some folks behind the show are fans. Check it out! In case the link changes, it’s dated June 16, 2006 and features Starfield.
- Clerks II is a choice for most anticipated film of the summer in a new poll towards the bottom of the front page of ComingSoon.net. We’re currently in second at presstime, but figure with some votes from fans like you, that could certainly charge!
- An astute scooper notes that the movie version of TV show “Strangers With Candy” features a band named Snowball 37 — Obvious Clerks fans there!
- There’s a slight reference to Mallrats in this spoiler-laden review of the new Superman flick over at Aint It Cool. Only read it if you don’t care about spoilage for the film, though.
- What’s next for Affleck? Seems that producers of the big screen adaptation of cult TV show Magnum PI are keen to cast him as the famous Hawaiian private investigator in the film version. IMDB reports:
Charles Floyd Johnson, one of the producers of the original 1980s TV series, insists the Daredevil star would be perfect for the mustachioed role after Tom Selleck held out too long to reprise the part. Johnson hints Affleck would be his first choice to play the lead but, regardless of the final casting, he tells moviehole.net, “I think it will be wonderful. Unfortunately it won’t star Tom. He was asked to do six or eight TV movies and at that time he really wanted to do it as a feature, so he held out on it and probably now they will consider him too old to do it.” Johnson names hot Hollywood producer Brian Grazer as the man behind the movie adaptation.
- Dig the cool tunes on NBC’s “My Name Is Earl”? You’re not the only one. IGN reports that a new “mixtape” by Earl will feature both old and new songs. The concept behind the album is built around it being a gift from Earl to his brother Randy. There’s a full track list as well. Yes, Rob Base and D.J. E-Z Rock are included, of course.
AICN’s Harry Loves Clerks II!
- Aint It Cool News remains probably the biggest, most honest movie site on the web — So it’s always excellent when the site’s creator, Harry Knowles, can give props to a film. That film is Clerks II this time, as Harry had the pleasure of seeing an early screening. Harry does a good job at writing a fairly spoiler-free review, as well, so consider the entire piece safe reading if you’re curious to hear his words. Very minor plot lines are brought up, but nothing at all is given away. Here’s just a few choice passages:
Ultimately – I feel CLERKS II is a message movie wrapped in filth, pop culture and honest emotional characters. The message is Kevin’s answer to how to live life right. Find what it is you can do that makes you happy each day and make that your own. Surround yourself with people you love, the right woman that fits into that life and makes it worth waking up for each and every day.
I think… for some of the younger of geeks, this will feel like bullshit. The ol’ “Keep on Keeping on” thing. But think about it. Look at Kevin. He’s not that different from most of us. He’s funnier, perhaps the faster wit… and he gets out there and does the shit he dreams of doing. But otherwise… He’s a fucking geek that sits online, looking for disgusting shit to email his friends, reading about shit he’s interested in, watching movies, playing games, buying toys… and making his own toys, having his own comic shop and having the great wife that fits into the dream, the best friend that watches his back every step of the way. He’s there for his friends and his friends are there for him. For me, it’s a bit of affirmation.
If you have that in your life, you’re doing pretty goddamn good. Find what you love and who you love to do that with and start working on the dream right now and you’ll find a peace. This movie is pretty goddamn beautiful.
Just more reasons this film is proving to be universally loved all around. Spread the word, and tell everyone you know what a hilarious time Clerks II will be in theaters next month.
Kevin Talks “Name”, “Super-Ex”…
- One of the bits of folklore that goes way back to the early days of View Askew was a flick called “Name” that Kevin planned to make at one point. Well, now it seems that a new indie flick’s been made that reminds Kevin so much of his own plans for the film that he realizes it’s time to shelve the idea. So, via his blog, he’s posted some thoughts of this elusive never-made flick that could have been (but now never will) as well as revealed information on a superhero flick/tv project that we REALLY wish would have been made:
“Name” was a film that long-time View Askew board folks would remember as the flick that I was talking about making after “Chasing Amy”, circa ‘97. And since this “Amber” picture shares some big similarities with what “Name” was gonna be, I figured my chances of ever making the flick were suddenly null and void. So I wrote a five paragraph synopsis of what the flick was gonna be to share with the folks at the ViewAskew.com board, and then, before hitting “submit”… I opted to erase it instead. I may not ever make the flick now, but it’d make a great comic book story, if I ever get around to it. So I opted to hold onto it instead, for the time being.
Regardless, this whole discovery is further proof that good ideas should be enacted on immediately – ‘lest someone else come up with the same good idea, somewhere down the road, and actually bring it to fruition. I’m in no way, shape, or form suggesting plagiarism on this dude’s behalf, mind you; indeed, you can’t plagiarize something that only existed in my head and never saw print. It’s just weird how people can have the same idea sometimes; albeit years apart, in this instance.
This is the second time I’ve had this feeling this year, though. Back in ‘98, I’d pitched this superhero movie to Miramax (that Harvey loved), which was kind of a “Pulp Fiction” anthology flick about a Justice League-of-sorts that is forced to disband, due to a government decree (a’la “Watchmen”). The flick would then follow all the characters in different segments, and then bring them together again in the end, to take on a common threat (one of their own, gone rogue). The flick was darkly funny and a pretty straightforward take on the superhero mythos; not a tongue-in-cheek affair at all. The “Untitled Superhero Project” was a mainstay in my overall Miramax deal for years, though I never got around to writing it. In 2000, while in pre-production on “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back”, I pitched it as a show to HBO, and they “bought” it and told me to write a pilot… and, again, I never got around to writing it. Something else always came up.
Anyway, in the segment/chapter of the flick that followed the Wonder Woman-type character, she found out her husband was cheating on her decided to use her super-powers to do a brutal, “Extremities” kinda thing on the louse (picture the “Reservoir Dogs” ear-slicing scene at twenty minutes long, with super-powers and a lot more than an ear getting cut).
Opening, ironically, on the same day as “Clerks II” is a flick called “My Super Ex Girlfriend” – which seems to be a light-hearted treatment of similar material.
The moral of the story (which, if you’re keeping track, falls under the heading “Man vs. Himself”) is this: don’t wait. When you’ve got what you feel is a cool, original story to tell… fucking tell it quick. Because if you don’t, sooner or later, someone else will.
Does Kevin’s superhero flick/tv idea sound like the COOLEST or what? To see a brutal, hard-R version of what he’s describing in the Wonder Woman-esque segment would have been worth admission alone. To see great ideas like this never made is a shame, though sometimes there’s just not enough time, we suppose. Wow. REAL interesting stuff there. Never heard anything about that before.
International “Clerks II” Details…
- We reported on an Australian release date for Clerks II a few weeks ago, and we’re now getting confirmation on that as well as some UK details (and yes, good news on some personal appearances) from Kevin himself:
I’ve finally got some info for you non-Americans who’ve been asking about the international release of “Clerks II”.
Right now, it looks like Australia is opening first. They’ve invited me Down Under (my first trip ever to Oz) to attend the premiere and do some press in Sydney and Melbourne. The proposed dates for the press tour are August 4th to August 10th, but that will change, due to my prior commitment to the Netflix/Alamo Drafthouse Rolling Roadshow screening of “Clerks II” outside of the Quick Stop in Leonoardo, NJ on August 8th. So “Clerks II” will be in Australian cinemas by mid-August the latest.
The UK goes next. I don’t have an exact release date, but they’ve got me coming to Blighty (first stop: Edinburgh) from August 17th to August 22 to do press, which would put the release date closer to the end of August.
That’s all I know thus far.
“My Name Is Earl”: DVD Release Change…
- TVShowsonDVD.com had previously reported that the long-awaited Season 1 release of the MNIE DVD would hit stores on September 5, but is now reporting the set has been delayed until September 26. No reason has been given, though we’ll keep you posted. We’re looking forward to this one, so the delay stinks, but at least it’s only a few weeks.

The complete first season DVD of My Name Is Earl will include an entirely new episode created specifically for the DVD when it is released on Sept. 26, Home Video Retailing reported today (Thursday).
The trade paper said that the episode is kind of an “alternate” to the pilot, in that instead of repenting for his past misdeeds, Earl decides to get back at anyone who’s ever wronged him. Ethan Suplee, who plays Earl’s brother in the series, told HVR that the performers were able “to play around a bit” with the DVD extra. “I don’t think we said f*** or anything like that, but I definitely don’t think you could air it on television.”
