Financial Times: “Radio Activity”

June 26th, 2011 @ 3:15 am | No Comments » | Scooped by

Sometimes, an article just captures a key moment in Kevin’s career so perfectly, we just wanna run it — This Financial Times piece, where they chat him up about the birth of the new SModcast Internet Radio, is one of those:

Radio activity
By Matthew Garrahan
The hills above the junction of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue are lush and green, with large houses nestled together on narrow, winding streets. It is a quiet, serene neighbourhood , a surprise, given the area’s proximity to the hustle and bustle of Hollywood, but that is one of the reasons the film director and writer Kevin Smith decided to move here a decade ago.

With an edgy sensibility and a taste for spicy dialogue, Smith, the director of films such as Chasing Amy, Dogma and Red State, has never really been part of the Hollywood establishment. Yet the portly director could not have chosen to live in an area more closely aligned with the entertainment industry.

Plenty of stars live in what is one of the city’s grandest enclaves. Dame Helen Mirren has a home nearby, for example, as does the director Penny Marshall. ‘Morpheus [Laurence Fishburne, the star of the Matrix films] lives around here too,î says Smith, easing himself into a chair in his living room.

Smith and his wife Jennifer, a former journalist, bought their imposing three-storey Mediterranean-style house from the actor and director Ben Affleck. Together with their 12-year-old daughter Harley ñ a vast portrait of her hangs in the entrance lobby they have turned Affleck’s former bachelor pad into a welcoming family home. Smith, clad today in an outsize orange and blue ice-hockey shirt, says he got a good deal from the actor, a long-time friend who starred in several of his movies. Affleck renovated the house but gave Smith a great price. ‘He put a bunch of loot into it and sold to us for exactly what he bought it for.’

There is a terrace outside on the first floor that opens out on to a rooftop pool, and a little gate at the top of the stairs to stop Smith’s dogs from bursting in to the room unannounced. Inside, the walls are adorned with prints and paintings including one work by street artist Shepard Fairey, who created the iconic image of Barack Obama before the 2008 presidential election. There is also a pool table and a fully stocked bar, although Smith doesn’t drink, marijuana, rather than alcohol, is his drug of choice.

The most unusual aspect and the reason we are meeting ñ is that the living room also doubles as a fully functioning internet radio station, where Smith and Jennifer record a daily morning show that is streamed to about 100,000 listeners around the world.

Smith launched Smodcast Internet Radio (SIR) in May and broadcasts live Monday to Friday, building on the success of his podcasts, which attract as many as 300,000 listeners at a time, and his fans on Twitter, where he has 1.8m followers.

The move into radio came about partly because, after almost 20 years, he had grown tired of the movie business. ‘I’m done,’ he says. ‘It’s been awesome but I can retire from film knowing I made enough movies. The radio thing makes it easier to walk away because I have something else to do. I will continue to work … I just won’t be in film.’

The radio shows follow a simple format: he and his co-presenters riff on the day’s news, with no subject off-limits or too racy for discussion. It is a big departure from film, which has undergone some big changes since Smith first directed Clerks in 1994. There are fewer companies around to release the movies that Smith liked to make while the cost of releasing movies has skyrocketed. ‘If you’re telling a story that’s off-kilter then you can’t do it [anymore],’ he says. ‘It requires $10m-$20m on marketing.’

With his last film, Red State, which explores fundamentalism in the US, he raised eyebrows at Robert Redford’s Sundance film festival when he screened the movie for potential distributors only to announce that he would be releasing the movie himself. He was roundly castigated by many in Hollywood and admits to being surprised by the reaction. ‘They were like, ‘Kill the heretic!’

What he wanted to do was go directly to the audience, without compromising the content of his work ñ or incurring the expense of a studio marketing campaign. So he did, taking the film out on the road across the country, Barnum & Bailey-style, promoting each screening on radio and local television and appearing in live question and answer sessions after the film had been shown.
Smith’s vast online following helped. ‘I just wanted to see if it could be done,’ he says. ‘Marketing is all about reaching an audience … well, I reach an audience every day.’

Contrary to expectations, the film, which had a budget of $4m, has already earned enough to pay back Smith’s investors and, with more distribution deals in the offing, it should earn a healthy profit. This is not to say it was easy. ‘There were days when I was up at four in the morning selling the tour to the other side of the country. It takes a real dedication to the art form, to the product, to take it to the streets yourself.’

But why would one of the most outspoken and funny filmmakers of recent years want to quit the silver screen for internet radio? ‘It seems to be the most accessible art form,’ he says. ‘Unlike film, which is way too expensive.’

He has secured a growing list of sponsors for SIR and was in the black from day one. But the continued success of the venture depends to a large extent on his wife Jennifer and her willingness to be on the air from her own home five days a week. So far, the omens are good. ‘She’s the big lynchpin here,’ he says. ‘Everything depends on her digging it.’

Yet as I look around at the memorabilia from his film career, I cannot help but feel that Hollywood will be more boring without Smith around to liven things up. He has never been one to toe the industry line self-releasing Red State is a prime example and has never let film get in the way of other interests.

Smith also writes comics and tells me about a poetry reading he once held at the house when Stan Lee, the co-creator of Spider-Man, mercilessly needled a fellow guest who turned out to be John Lydon of the Sex Pistols. The punk rocker ‘didn’t take it very well,’ he says.

There are newspaper cuttings on the wall ñ including the interview Jennifer did for USA Today when she first met Smith 13 years ago. Was it love at first sight? ‘A fat man is never confident, he sighs.
He may lack confidence but with an army of fans behind him and a killer sense of humour that shows no sign of losing its edge, it would be unwise to bet against the great Hollywood outsider in his new venture. ‘I’m lucky enough to not work for anyone anymore,’ he says, laughing. ‘I can just work for the audience.’

My favourite things: Artwork

‘It’s beautiful, man’

Statuettes of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck from ‘Dogma’

On the statuettes of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck from the movie Dogma, by the sculptor Clete Shields:

‘I saw some pieces he had done for Pulp Fiction and loved them. So after Dogma I had Clete make them for me, Ben, Matt and Jason Lee. Quentin [Tarantino] has his own pieces in his theatre at his house.’

On a portrait of Harley Smith, by Gottfried Helnwein:

‘He does these giant pictures that look like photographs but if you get up real close you can see these tiny brushstrokes. I got home from work late one night after it had been hung up and went to the farthest wall and looked at it for a long time. It’s beautiful, man.

Major “Red Statements” are DAYS Away!

June 26th, 2011 @ 3:13 am | No Comments » | Scooped by

  • Keep your browsers tunes to the official “Red Statements” blog , where Kevin will reveal some major news regarding the film (likely in tandem with some announcements on S.I.R. next week). Last we’ve left the film, we’d heard rumors of a way that U.S. fans can see “Red State” by Labor Day (only 2 months away). We’re speculating an exclusive pay-per-view engagement, possibly, so tune up your big screen sets or get ye to a Best Buy with your credit card. When the blog’s updated, we’re hearing it’ll be chock full of upcoming ways you can see the awesome “Red State” for yourself, if you haven’t already had the pleasure.

The UK will get the film in a nationwide release on September 30th, though a date is all we’ve got so far. With that UK date official, you can bet the farm on the fact that the US will have a shot at it before then. We’re hoping for some more theatrical chances to catch it, as well, including the previously mentioned tour that would bring “Red” to smaller neighborhood and art house screens.

Last we heard from Kevin, he’d had a magical experience watching the flick with the great Quentin Tarantino. We’re looking forward to reading what’s next.

  • We’ve got some artwork for that July 22nd Price Charles Cinema (UK) quote-along event for “Clerks” here — Once again, if you’re able to make it, this one-night-only event will give you a chance to dress like your favorite “Clerks” character, and perhaps even take a shot at performing “Berseker” on stage. It’s been quite some time since “Clerks” has been shown on the big screen anywhere in the UK, so hit up their website and get a seat before they’re gone.

Save Raquel Castro!

June 24th, 2011 @ 3:38 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As our readers/followers are likely aware of by now, “Jersey Girl” star Raquel Castro is now a star on NBC’s hit summer series “The Voice”. The program features singers who were chosen based solely on their voice, and are now coached by one of 4 celebrity mentors. Castro is a member of Christina Aguilera’s team, and survived an early battle round against another female singer. This past Monday, she kicked off the show with a rockin’ performance of Ke$ha’s “Blow”, which had Aguilera out of her chair with excitement.

Now, it’s the audience’s turn to help their favorites move through the competition. Since Monday’s show, fans have been able to vote for a “save”. Of the 4 members of each celebrity team, one will be given the “audience save” which is determined by the top number of votes from the public. Another of the 4 will be saved by their mentor. The remaining 2 will go home. While we’re fairly certain that Christina would love to see Raquel continue on, and would save her as well, we’d love for the audience to choose her as the fave. So here’s how you can do it, all the way up until 10 AM this Monday morning, EST:

You can vote up to 10 times per voting method (though we’re assuming you’re not going to download the song 10 times, you can, and have it count). Calls and web-based votes are simple and should only take you a few minutes. News Askew is a proud supporter of Team Raquel, and hope to see her move forward in the competition, which has topped the summer television rankings this year. Good luck!

Learn more about Raquel and hear from her directly at her new official site, raquelcastro.com.

  • Film Snobbery Live posts a new call-in interview with Chop Shop Entertainment’s Zak Knutson as part of episode #44. Zak’s worked closely with Kevin for many years now, from his brilliant work on the famous Snowball Effect documentary, orchestrating the latest “Too Fat for 40” event (story above), and of course, his famous on screen role alongside Kinky Kelly in “Clerks 2”. He’s also a dang nice guy to boot. Check it out.
  • Catch the great Jason Lee as a guest star in the October 26th episode of the new Fox sitcom “Raising Hope”. Lee will play SMOKEY DANIELS, a washed-up rock star who is hired as the lead act at Grocery-Palooza, a rock concert at the supermarket where SABRINA (Shannon Woodward) works. Smokey was once BURT’s (Garret Dillahunt) musical idol, and Burt hopes to relive his rock-star years by playing backup for him at the concert. Sounds like a good one. This will be a one-hour episode. The program was created by Greg Garcia, creator of “My Name is Earl”.

  • Learn lots more about the wonderful world of SModcast and SModcastle via this extensive TechDirt article that does a fantastic job covering the birth of the network, where it’s gone, and where it’s going. Check out some clippage:

…Earlier this year he did two new things: first, he started offering additional podcasts, both from himself and others. It was mainly the rotating cast of close friends of Smith, many of whom have appeared on previous SModcasts, doing their own podcasts, and putting together a Smodcast podcast network. And, I’ve actually become hooked on those as well — even though I never thought I’d care what Smith’s friends had to say on anything (though, ironically, on a recent episode of one of these podcasts, the Tell ’em Steve-Dave show, the hosts came out supporting John Mellencamp on his recent confused anti-internet statements, with Walt suggesting that anyone who downloads unauthorized content should have their computers destroyed on the spot). The second thing he did was he took SModcast on the road, with a series of live shows at various venues (including the Improv in Hollywood). Yes, this was basically still him sitting around, chatting with Scott Mosier about whatever he felt like chatting about… but people were paying to see them do it live.

Once again… giving away the infinite goods for free… and realizing he could sell the scarce good (seats/access). In fact, as expected, the infinite goods help make those scarce goods more valuable. The reason why people want to go see Kevin Smith literally have a random conversation with a close friend is because of all those free Smodcasts they listen to.

And now he’s taken even that to another level. After the success of some of the other podcasts and the live shows, Smith set up a Smodcastle theater in Los Angeles, where he not only will regularly perform Smodcasts, but has a whole host of other podcasts being recorded as well. Hell, he’ll even host weddings there for a large fee — where he’ll turn your wedding into a podcast where he’ll interview the bride and groom before officiating their wedding. Seriously.

See TechDirt for the whole thing, a highly recommended read.

  • Kudos to the tweeter who pointed out that, while this week’s couch gag on The Simpsons was quite inspired, that Clerks: The Animated Series did the Korean animator gag 10 years ago. Great stuff, though every time we watch the old TAS, we get a little sad — Such a funny show whose life was cut WAY short. See ya next time!

  • The new “Pawn Stars for comic book geeks” TV show, starring Wall Flanagan and Bryan Johnson, based in Red Bank’s Secret Stash, has been attached to the AMC network, home of “Breaking Bad”, “Mad Men”, “The Killing” and “The Walking Dead”. The Hollywood Reporter has a few more details.
  • Visit the new official site of “Jersey Girl”, and now “The Voice” star Raquel Castro, http://raquelcastro.com. Don’t forget, voting for her performance runs all the way through this Monday morning at 10 AM, so don’t forget to download her performance, or call or text your votes, to keep her in the competition for another week. We’re expecting her to reach the finals! TO VOTE PLEASE CALL 1-855-(VOICE-01(864-2301) OR VISIT www.nbc.com.
  • Kevin recently hinted he might return to the world of publishing with a new book. No further details yet regarding a topic or theme, but stay tuned. We know that plans are afoot for the “Hit Somebody” script to arrive in chunks for purchase later this summer, but we have a feeling this is something totally different.
  • The free tickets for the the first SMoviola, “Valley Girl”, were gone in mere minutes, though here’s some deets on the event which goes down this Saturday, June 11th, at 7:00 PM at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York. Kevin will moderate a Q&A including the director and other special guests (we believe star Deborah Foreman will be there!) right after the film. Don’t have tickets? Stand by in line 30 minutes before the film and you still might get in. More films on the SMoviola series on the way.

“Red State” Nearing Completion…

June 13th, 2011 @ 12:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • What’s the latest with “Red State”, you ask? Well, Kevin’s been busy not only filming the thing, but also doing his trademark cutting as he films it, which means he’ll actually have an edited version of the film to show to the cast and crew at the wrap party. How cool is THAT? Unfortunately, for fans who enjoy following him on Twitter, this crazy schedule of filming half the day then editing the other half hasn’t left a lot of spare time, so the tweets have been scant. However, here’s a few of interest from recent days that sheds a bit more light on the plot, and confirms how well things are going on set:

Another quality RED STATE evenin’. Tonight, we badger Matt Jones. 45 mins of footage cut. We’re halfway done. Parks & Leo & ALL crushing it.

Via @Stevezie “Filming?” 10 days left. Editorially, I’m current w/what’s shot – so at the wrap party, the crew can watch the entire flick.

Act 2 is all about self-sufficiency: relying solely on one’s own abilities to achieve & satisfy. No more intermediates; no more middle-men.

Via @thewoodyatt “Happy with RED STATE so far?” SO fucking happy. There’s not a weak link in this bunch… #FilmmakingTheWayItShouldAlwaysBe

As of today, “Red State” finishes filming in just 8 days. Yep, it’s gone by THAT fast. Given the total genre change, the lower budget, and the great casting, we can’t remember the last time we were this excited to see new footage and film from Kevin — We love the boldness of this project, and can’t wait to cover more as it all comes together. Next stop should be a final edit of the film, and then, a release date. We’ll keep you posted.

And, of course, the original podcast network continues posting new content to the official site. Here’s a few tweets from Kevin announcing some of the key new programs added this week:
