  • News Askew, Shock Till You Drop and Ronalds Brothers Productions are pleased to announce the release (and release party) of “Netherbeast Incorporated” (starring Jason Mewes) on DVD – January 6, 2009! To celebrate, we’re giving away 5 copies of the DVD to News Askew readers for doing nothing more than sending us a simple email with the subject “Contest” (no quotes needed), along with your name and address somewhere in the body, to SCOOPS AT NEWSASKEW.COM (spell it out like an e-mail though, we’re trying to cut back on the spam). Easy as that. One entry per person. No need to write an essay or beg. We’ll pick 5 entries at random from all the entries that we get by 11:59:59 PST on December 31, 2008. So you’ve got the rest of the year to enter (but why not do it now?).

If you’re in the Los Angeles area, why not attend the official release party? It’ll be at the familiar CineSpace (off Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood, CA) on January 6th, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Admission price is free, as long as you purchase the DVD there. Celebrities from Netherbeast will attend per professional availability (no word on Mewes at this point, we’ll let you know as we hear). If you plan to attend, you may want to drop an RSVP to netherbeast@cox.net and let them know your intentions so you can be sure you’ll get in the door.

Visit the official website for more on the film, or watch the original short film, “The Netherbeast of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc.”, of which the feature was adapted from at good ‘ol YouTube.

A human efficiency expert (Judd Nelson Breakfast Club) and “Dead Mike’s” replacement (Amy Davidson TV s 8 Simple Rules) are invited to work at Berm-Tech but soon they discover that some of their associates (Dave Foley TV s Kids in the Hall, Newsradio, Jason Mewes Clerks 1 & 2, Zack and Miri Make a Porno and Steve Burns TV s Blue s Clues) are not what they appear to be.

  • Could it be closer to reality? We posted a rumored DVD release date for “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” as February 10th a while back — Now, Amazon is also listing this date . While we have not yet had an official confirmation anywhere, Amazon typically hits the mark, so it’s looking a lot more likely that we’ll be adding the flick to all our DVD catalogs this February. Stay tuned.
  • This article on Russian propaganda film “Strangers” (not to be confused with the recent U.S. flick of the same name), mentions that, though it was thought to be a big hit, got TROUNCED by “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, which took in 13 million rubles during its opening weekend there.
  • Those of you watching NBC’s “Chuck” (recommended, a nice fun easy watch every week) will notice that “Mallrats” alum Michael Rooker makes a cameo appearance, along with an iconic character from the “Die Hard” franchise that’s just too good to ruin. Check it out, and we’ll see ya again soon…

Toronto Friday Show: Tix Now Open To All!

December 13th @ 3:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Laura Shannon, Cameron Tremblay

  • The presale’s over, so if you missed out on the first round, you may now proceed to the Ticketmaster site to purchase your tickets to Kevin’s 2nd just-added night in Toronto for this February — The first event sold out in record time, so we’re expecting the same to happen on this one. Don’t delay, buy today.

The show takes place on Friday, February 6, 2009, 7:00 PM in Roy Thomson Hall, Toromto. Kevin’s Canadian appearances are among the all-time greats, so don’t miss out — This historic two night event is sure to go down in View Askew History as one of the greats. Some fans attending Saturday have been buying seats for Friday as well, now that tix have opened back up, which is fine, as no two Kevin shows are ever the same. In fact, his last Red Bank Show was a completely open forum that went in any direction Kevin would allow the audience to take it, no preset stories among the night. If this trend continues into February, we may very well see two totally different shows in Toronto. Here’s hoping to see many a News Askew fan among the crowd. Enjoy the show(s)!

  • You’ve seen it at the top of the event list for quite some time now, so we’re happy to report that tix for the Bushnell show, “An Evening With Kevin Smith”, are now on sale. The show takes place on January 24th in Hartford, Connecticut. Visit the official page to order online. Tix range from $36.50 to $42.50 and, at presstime, are still available. As always with Kevin’s live shows, these have high risk of selling out. If you are on the fence, don’t delay, get your tickets now for what’s sure to be a hilarious evening to brighten up the cold winter months here in the Northeast.
  • Jay & Bob join Unreality Magazine’s list of “Memorable Movie Stoners” :

At a minimum, Jay and Silent Bob induce a chuckle when they’re on screen. Silent Bob, as his monicker implies, usually doesn’t have much to say. Jay, on the other hand, is the personification of vulgarity. He’s as quick to make a d*cksucking joke (Make like a circus seal? Nice.) as he is to light up a joint, and when the reins are loosened in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the result is one of the funniest pairs of stoners in movie history. What a lovely tea party.

Another “Toronto” Show Likely!

December 10th @ 8:12 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Larry Daguanno

  • As we sorta warned when we posted it, Kevin’s fans in the Toronto area are DEVOTED, to the point that his upcoming February 7th show sold out in record time. Not one to disappoint the public, though, Kevin’s acting quick and it’s looking likely that a second show will be announced very soon. This is what Kevin posted on the WWWBoard this week:

      Pssssst…

I’ve heard rumor that the show sold out so quickly, and the demand is still so high, that they’re thinking about adding another show.

      Just something I heard.

We’ll take it a step further – We just heard a rumor that if the show is true, the next presale will be THIS THURSDAY. Nothing confirmed yet, but stick close to News Askew if you want the details. It’ll be our jobs to ensure that fans get tix for this next one as quickly as possible. Stick around.

  • We loved the way “Reaper” ended its first season on the CW last year, so the wait for its return has been quite grueling — Thankfully, the CW has indeed confirmed the return of the program this March. E! Online reports that the show comes back on Tuesday, March 17th (St. Patrick’s Day!) with a strong lead-in, the new 90210 series. The show will air at 9 PM Tuesdays for 13 straight weeks without reruns, giving them a chance to build a nice story arc. No word on Kevin’s status with the show, we believe he’ll at least remain as exec producer, and we’ll still hope to see him possibly return for another directing gig (if they’re not already all in the can, anyway). The season cliffed out on a doozy involving Sam’s parents, so we’re looking forward to the plans for season 2. Check out “Reaper” on the CW this March!
  • Looking at the almighty Box Office Mojo website, we can see that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” has officially become the highest grossing View Askew flick so far, surpassing “Dogma”. “Zack and Miri” has grossed $30,839,277 to date, beating “Dogma”s gross of $30,652,890. As always, these numbers greatly improve once we get to DVD releases and foreign sales, though these numbers take into account ONLY the US theatrical box office take.
  • Netflix recently challenged programmers to come up with a better movie recommendation system than their own site/service provides. One guy from the reel.com days (man, we remember that site!) has developed his answer to the challenge and dubbed it “Clerkdogs”. The title is an homage to “Clerks” and “Reservoir Dogs”. Read more about it at the LA Times Blog and then give it a shot. We’re huge fans of the Netflix service here, by the way, so if any of the fine folks behind them are readers, kudos to you, friends.

  • The immortal Randal Graves shows up in Empire’s list of the “100 Greatest Movie Characters” :

“This job would be great if it wasn’t for the fucking customers.”

      Randal Graves

      Played By: Jeff Anderson

      Film: Clerks

Why He’s On The List: Randal is the voice of countless generations – anyone who’s had a shitty customer service job in their early twenties will understand his attitude, wishing they could have articulated their frustration with his artful profanity and supreme disregard for, well, anything. But the key to Randal is that he doesn’t necessarily hate his job, it’s just that he remembers not to care.

Finest Hour: Randal ignores a customer and her small child while he phone-orders a long list of sordidly titled porn films from a distributor. When he reaches the end of the lengthy spiel, he dismissively asks “Oh, and what was the one you wanted again?”

  • More crazy IMDB rumor mill – We would call the probability of this about 10 percent, but IMDB (often unreliable) now lists Kevin as joining Jason Mewes in the cast for the hot-chicks-as-guys prison drama “K-11”. Mewes was mentioned on board via MTV News recently, so we beleive that one, though Kevin’s involvement has not been confirmed by any reliable source.
  • Watch for new Askewer Craig Robinson among the star-studded cast of Funny or Die’s 3-minute “Prop 8: The Musical”, new to the site this week. Another reason to watch – Mark Shaiman, who co-wrote the hilarous “South Park” musical feature film, worked on this one as well.
  • Mewes in the news – Some digging confirmed that filming on “Silent But Deadly” ended in Canada a couple of months ago. This article from Chatham Daily News reveals some insight on the film’s financing and distribution hopes. Sounds like we’ll be seeing the movie, in which Mewes plays a silent killer, sometime in 2009.
  • And last, but certainly not least, we’ll make it a double shot of Mewes news – His vampire comedy “Netherbeast, Incorporated” now has an official DVD release date – January 6, 2009, less than a month away! Box art and a press release here:

“Shaun of the Dead” fans rejoice! Finally another brilliant horror comedy to win over your undead hearts. The Ronalds Brothers NETHERBEAST INCORPORATED is an offbeat hilarious comedy with a quirky twist on the vampire tale set in modern day corporate America. Employees of Berm-Tech Industries, Inc. have kept the family secret for a long time. This is one of those flicks that we didn’t have a chance to see in this part of the country, so we’re looking forward to catching the DVD. Stay tuned as we’re hoping to have some copies to award to lucky News Askew fans, as well. Enjoy the weekend, folks, we’ll see ya back here soon.
