New J&SBSB Report From AICN Online!

February 13th, 2001 @ 8:07 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Tyler Stansbury & Stephen Humphrey

  • Mysterio is back this week at AICN with a much shorter report and some exclusive pics from the set that we hope to have up for you here later and at Scooping The Monkey. Those involve Adam Corolla’s cameo, the first shot of Jeff Anderson in Randal garb once again, and a few more Jay & Bob shots (naturally)! He also reveals that in the film, “for the first time, you’ll get to see all of Silent Bob’s pent up aggression and rage explode on screen”. Wow. Also, this little tidbit might interest you:
Here’s your chance to have your question possibly answered by you’re favorite View Askew actor or character, and I’ll choose a handful of about 10-20 really good ones. Now by “good ones” I mean those related to the individual, their craft or character they inhabit in the View Askewniverse. No, I will not ask Ben about Gwyneth, nor will I address any gossip or rumors towards an individual. This is about their work, experiences, and feelings of being a part of this series that Kevin has created. Be respectful. I will also not field questions relating to any spoiler material about “JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK”, remember this is still a spoiler-free column.

So AICN. Catch ya later.

Kevin: “Almost Half Done”…

February 11th, 2001 @ 3:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Will Wilkins & Jess

  • Kevin’s back with another of his week-end reports. This week, Kevin shot mostly stuff with the actresses of the flick, including a great debut performance from his wife, Jennifer. Sounds like he’s incredibly pleased with the film, which builds the anticipation even more. Anyway, here’s Kevin with that report:
At the end of this coming week, we’ll be at the mid-way mark. This movie’s just flying by.

So what went on this week? Let’s see…

I put my wife on film for the first time, and in all honesty (and I’m not just saying this because she makes with the sex)…

She really surprised me. In a great way.

For a person who’d never acted before, she held her own against the likes of Eliza and Ali (Larter, not Cassius). Fine delivery of dialogue (both scripted and written on the spot – featuring a very, very funny line in the latter, provided by her husband), and a dead-sexy look. I was proud as punch and can’t wait until this week when we get to do more with her.

Shannon continues to bring not only a sweetness to her character, but also some humor that wasn’t that evident in the script. Very proud of her too.

Eliza and Ali were both wonderful, spunky, arch, sexy and born to deliver the kind of dialogue I write (I hear some of you out there now: “BAD dialogue, you fat fuck.”). They’ll definitely be popping up in stuff I do after this flick.

Jay continues to dazzle.

Will continues to be the most hysterics-inducing performer I’ve ever worked with. Fuck, he’s funny. We lose him for about three weeks, but he’ll be back at the tail end of the month to wrap-up his stuff.

But the real stars of this picture (at least in my eyes) are the various crew folks who’re bringing it all to life. From Dave Morton, our master of light, to Tim and his A.D. crew of Heather and KC; from the always top-notch production design of Ratface and his team, to Taylor and Missy, our hair goddesses, and Patty and Sue, our makeup queens; from Mosier and Laura, the real brains behind the operation who scheduled a perfect week of shooting, to Isis, our costume maven (who put the girls in some outfits that’ll leave mouths agape, drooling; from Lisa, Scott, and John, the props wizards, to the two Mikes who control the vast animal kingdom on the show; from the catering cats and the genius craft service gents who keep us not only nourished, but sated, to John, our medic on the front lines, and Tracey, our stills maestro… These are the people who’re making the movie. I’m just sitting back and taking the credit.

But in that pantheon of greats, the shining star has to be Jamie, our sage-like D.P. This movie looks amazing. A-MAZING. You folks will not believe I – the lamest visual director this side of a blind man – had a visual hand in this picture, so good, in fact, does it look. He’s a master.

I hate building expectation normally; it’s far easier to sell something short and let people be surprised by the flick. But I have to say that this flick is really, really something special. Every day we shoot, I’m surprised by how cool it’s shaping up.

Trust me, folks – we saved the best for last.

Mysterio’s Latest On-Set J&SBSB Report!

February 8th, 2001 @ 12:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bradd Parton, Godfrey & BrodieRat,

  • Mysterio is back with another HUGE report from the set of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. The guy’s got all access to everything around, and, while he’s still doing his best to keep the spoilers down (as are we), you can get a feel for at least what’s happening and who’s appearing in certain scenes in his latest report. Remember, you can read these things in their entirety at Scooping The Monkey or at Aint It Cool News, their original home.
  • It’s confirmed that Ethan Suplee is unable to do his cameo because he (like Duchovny) is still tied up shooting ‘Evolution’ for Ivan Reitman.
  • Joey Lauren Adams, as Alyssa Jones, will just appear in a cameo, like a lot of the other Askew characters, outside of the theater where The Bluntman & Chronic feature film starring Biggs & Van Der Beek is being shown.
  • Kev asked Joey to play Serendipity in Dogma when her role as Bethany fell through due to Miramax’s desire for a different actress.
  • Joey hopes to come back and work with Kevin again in larger roles in future films.
  • Other folks listed as just doing “cameos”: O’Halloran, Anderson, Ewell, Humphries, Johnson, Flanagan. We’re not sure if this was their only scene or if these actors will show up elsewhere. Our bet is that most characters from the previous films will show up in just this one scene (referenced above as a spoiler).
  • Jason Lee will be on set for other scenes, so his role or roles are obviously not just a single cameo.

As always, TONS more to be read on this stuff in the full-blown articles. They’re longer than ever though, so have at least a half hour or so to spare. Thanks to Mysterio and AICN!

Signed Dogma SE, Clerks TAS DVD’s Available For Pre-Order!

February 8th, 2001 @ 12:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jaydell, Jared & Tim Shields,

  • The headline pretty much says it all. While the Clerks cartoon is still on track for a release later this month (sadly, we’ve been unable to get a preview copy for the site), the Dogma SE remains in limbo. However, you can reserve a copy of both from Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash for $29.99 each right now! This is the only place to get these things SIGNED by Kevin Smith himself! That’s right, the price does include the Kev signature. Surf over to The Stash online and place those orders. The Clerks cartoon discs will arrive on schedule, and you’ll be guaranteed a copy of the signed Dogma SE as soon as it sees release. We’ll let ya know when to expect that as soon as we know, though.

CSN’S Green Arrow #1 Review!

February 8th, 2001 @ 11:58 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Robert Getz

  • More incredibly great press from a very reputable and important publication, Comic Shop News. From this week’s issue (#712) comes the following GLOWING review of Green Arrow #1:
“Y’know, I never realized that Kevin Smith’s stint on “Daredevil” was just a warm-up! But now that I’ve read the first issue of his “Green Arrow” series, it’s obvious that he was holding back the best stuff for Ollie.

“Green Arrow” marks Oliver Queen’s return to the role that he filled for more than a half-century – and it marks Kevin Smith’s DC debut. This series united him with artists Phil Hester and Ande Parks; together, the three are pulling out all the stops to make the Emerald Archer an A-team player in the DC Universe.

How does he do it? How does Kevin Smith bring back a character who was blown to bits a few years ago? I’m not going to give that one away – but I will note for posterity that my good friend Michael Brown accurately predicted exactly how this story would tie in with “Final Night”. And, just as Doctor Mike claimed, it works…and it makes perfect sense, since the clues were there all along.

But how Kevin Smith brings Oliver Queen back is less important than why he brings Oliver Queen back. Oliver Queen’s death was far more memorable than the last few years of his super-hero life – and if Smith had brought Ollie back only to return him to his previous career of mediocrity, then all the effort would have been wasted. Instead, Smith is rebuilding the character without tossing out any of the qualities that defined him in the past. And, of course, he’s very good at it – but what would you expect from a man who’s made his career as a filmmaker whose skill at characterization is superlative?

All the questions aren’t answered in the first issue – but there’s no rush, since Smith has a twelve-issue odyssey mapped out. And while Odysseus’ journey took twenty years, Oliver will find his way home in twelve issues.

One surprise here was Smith’s choice of artists: after working with a high-profile fan-fave like Joe Quesada on “Daredevil”, Smith could have had his choice of artistic superstars. He chose Hester and Parks, though, because they’re more than flash and finish – their storytelling skills are top notch, and their bold linework gives the story a dynamic style that immediately establishes this book as much more than the typical fine-line pin-up comic or the manga-derivative flavor of the month.

And one other surprise – Kevin Smith does manage to get away with one sexy scene that surprised me; it’s perfectly in character and, while the scene’s merely suggestive, it’s still a little more risque than you expect from a mainstream superhero comic.

Want a superhero comic you can truly enjoy – and one that you won’t be embarrassed to put into a non-fan’s hands? With its combination of believable characterization, dynamic visuals, and deft plotting, “Green Arrow” fits the bill perfectly.”

The review then gives the book five stars, which they define as, “You don’t find comics better than this; creme de la creme.” Wow! Sounds like one to buy a few extra copies of. These puppies might be worth something down the road! This new series can’t show up soon enough. We can’t wait.

  • Here’s a few more big screen chances to catch some View Askew classics:
  • Clerks will be shown Feb. 7-8 and Chasing Amy will be shown Feb 9-10 in the Ferguson Center Theatre at the University of Alabama. Admission is free.
  • Clerks is being shown on Feb.9th & 10th at the Phoenix Film Festival in Phoenix, Az. The event is being held at the AMC Arizona Center Cinema. The website www.phxfilm.com states that it will be showing at midnight on both nights.
  • In preparation for Kevin’s visit to SUNY Fredonia, the school’s Films chair is going to be showing two of his movies, one a week. Both flicks will be shown in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Williams Center on Fredonia’s campus. The first choice, Mallrats, will be shown at 8 on April 9. The second choice, Dogma, will be shown the next Tuesday, the 17th, at 8, same place.
  • CORRECTION: The Mallrats date for the midnight movie at Madison Union is not the 10th as previously reported. It will play on the 17th of this month according to their web site.
  • The deleted opening sequence of Mallrats has been placed as the 7th best deleted scene on DVD by DVD Review magazine in the UK.
  • And finally today, Kevin gets a quote in the latest issue of British movie magazine Total Film:
“I write for hire, but I would never be a director for hire. Offers have come down and sometimes it’s hard to say no, just because there’s a lot of money involved. It’s like if somebody said: ‘Hey, here’s $10 million, will you suck a dick?’ You’d certainly think about it before you say no.”

  • Rumor has it that Kevin MAY appear at a Comic Convention in Akron, Ohio on August 15th. The Green Arrow team will be in town, and it’s a big “Maybe” since that happens just five days after Jay & Bob is scheduled to open. We’ll keep you posted.
  • Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back got probably the first of its many television mentions yesterday on E! News Daily. They conducted an interview with Shannon Elizabeth and mentioned she’ll be in the new film, and also mentioned that they (hosts Steve and Jules) were excited to see themselves in the movie later this summer.
  • The Union South in Madison, WI will be showing Mallrats as part of their Midnight Movies on Satruday, February 10th. Best of all, it’s FREE! Check it out if you’re in the area, Rats is always fun to screen in front of a big rowdy crowd of fans.
  • Clerks will be shown February 7-8 and Chasing Amy will be shown February 9-10 at the Ferguson Center Theatre at the University of Alabama. Admission is free.

Sunday Commentary

February 4th, 2001 @ 12:43 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Well, looks like yet another weekend is flying by us. February sweeps start up in full force on the tube tonight with the return of Fox Mulder to X-Files, new Simpsons, Futurama, and Oz, plus a BIG week of the tube ahead as well. Best to get the updates done earlier than later these days!

Caught “Shadow of the Vampire” yesterday…Malkovich and especially Dafoe‘s performances were outstanding. Lion’s Gate has a real good Oscar contender this year and we wish them the best of luck with their campaign. The flick’s very atmospheric and draws you in, well deserving of some statues. Lions Gate, as you recall, released Dogma last year and has Bryan Johnson’s “Vulgar” coming later in 2001. Good stuff.

How about those pics from Friday? Wow. Fantastic! The flick’s shaping up to be incredible, and running right on schedule from what we understand. It’s hard to believe we’ll see a finish product already this summer! Very exciting. Even though the flick’s top order as always, we’ve assembled some other cool stuff for ya today, as well as a new poll topic, so get your vote in, and check out today’s news. Let’s go:

“The Week That Was”…

February 4th, 2001 @ 12:42 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • Kevin checked in with an update on last weeks’ proceedings on the set, with a short and cryptic look at last week’s happenings and what’s coming up this week. With this post, we’re also adding two new characters to the amazingly huge cast list! Check it out:
We shot my first blue screen this week, as well as a lot of stage stuff with stunts and whatnot. It was almost an all-Jay&Bob week, with the exception of today. We ended week three on some strong, hysterical notes with Will (of course, ever the genius), Adam Corrolla (he of ‘Love Lines’ and ‘Man Show’ fame), and the ever-brilliant Jon Stewart. Really, really funny stuff. Wish I could elaborate, but don’t want to spoil anything.

Next week is what we’re calling ‘Chick Week’ around here, as we spend the five days shooting Shannon, Eliza, Jen, and Ali Larter – all dressed in…

Well, you’ll see.

Kevin Nominated For “Engraver Award”…

February 4th, 2001 @ 12:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jade Walker

  • Inscriptions Magazine has nominated Kevin Smith for his excellent work on the sadly now defunct Psycomic column, “Developing The Monkey”. The award, the 2000 Inscriptions Engraver Award, is voted on by the magazine’s subscribers. Here’s the full list of nominees for this category:

By the way, congrats also to Sean Jordan of Zentertainment, who not only sent in this scoop but is nominated for an award himself as best e-zine of the year. Zen’s a great read every week and Sean’s always running News Askew scoops at the top of the heap, which is always appreciated!
