Mallrats DVD Commentary Rated #1 By IGN!

February 4th, 2001 @ 12:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Devon Lorrell, Pavan, Eric Robinson, C. Brian Hayes, Magnum Adam, Troy Murray, Mattman, Sidbal, Rick Peterson & Travis

  • We got a record number of scoops on this one, probably because of the day off and the news happening right after the last update. Anyway, entertainment website IGN has awarded Mallrats the distinction of having the #1 DVD Commentary track! Here’s what they had to say:
1. MALLRATS (IGN DVD Review)

Concerned Parties: Writer/Director Kevin Smith, Actors Ben Affleck, Jason Lee and Jason Mewes and Produces Scott Mosier and Vincent Pereira

1. Informational Value – It’s loaded with all sorts of stuff, almost all of it funny as hell. They discuss everything from Jason Mewes’ pitiful life to the life and death of the film to Michael Rooker’s baldness to Ben Affleck’s sex appeal. This is a crew of of friends, and it’s contagious. You want to be there.

2. Entertainment Value – The only thing that can compete with the disc above (and a few mentioned below) for entertainment value.

3. Usage of the time – Stacked like a playmate of the year.

4. Overall impact – Forget that you can use the angle feature to see these people onscreen if you want to. Just sit back and laugh.

Chasing Amy also gets an honorable mention…And we hope the gang listed to the “Clerks” track, too. The original classic! Congrats to everyone involved on the Mallrats commentary, as it truly is incredibly fun and entertaining, and has that rare appeal that makes you want to listen to it over and over again, unlike most DVD tracks which are rough to get through even once. The only question now is…Will Dogma SE’s tracks top it?

Green Arrow Article In Philly Daily News…

February 4th, 2001 @ 12:36 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris Cline

  • The Philadephia Daily News has run what has to be the most extensive article on Kevin’s Green Arrow series thus far…Not much else to say except that if you’re anticipating this book as much as the rest of us, you’ll definitely wanna read this article, which plugs the new series and also goes into Ollie’s history and why the new series is such a big event in the comics world:
Green Arrow’s return has fans quivering

by Andrew A. Smith
Scripps Howard News Service

Kevin Smith, the famed writer/director of “Clerks,” “Mallrats,” “Chasing Amy” and “Dogma,” will be penning the adventures of Oliver “Green Arrow” Queen with the first issue of the Emerald Archer’s new series, shipping Feb. 28.

It’s unlikely Jay & Silent Bob (who have appeared in all of Smith’s films) will make a cameo, but the return of the Battling Bowman with an A-list movie director at the helm is reason enough for comic fans to sit up and take notice.

For those who have followed Smith’s career, his affection for comic books comes as no surprise. Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee made a cameo in “Mallrats,” and “Chasing Amy” took place mostly at a comic-book convention and starred a comic-book writer and artist. Smith has dabbled in comics before; he penned “Daredevil,” Vol. 2, Nos. 1-8, for Marvel Comics in 1998-99, and has recounted the adventures of Jay & Silent Bob in various venues for Oni Press over the years.

Now he turns his mighty word processor to DC’s perennial second banana, Green Arrow. But there’s one hitch: GA is dead.

Yup, it’s true. Oliver Queen, who first donned his modern-day Robin Hood gear in 1941, blew up real good in an exploding airplane in “Green Arrow,” Vol. 1, No. 100, back in 1995. Superman was a witness, and thinks he’s dead. His illegitimate son Connor Hawke (who’s been Green Arrow for the last six years) thinks he’s dead. His former partner Roy “Arsenal” Harper thinks he’s dead. His former lover Dinah “Black Canary” Lance thinks he’s dead.

But “dead” in comics isn’t the immutable tragedy it is in life – it’s more of an inconvenience. Smith hasn’t revealed how he plans to resuscitate the Ace Archer, but it won’t be the first time Oliver Queen’s life has taken a peculiar twist.

Green Arrow was launched in “More Fun Comics” No. 73 in November 1941, the same issue that debuted the equally long-lived Aquaman. Originally, the Battling Bowman was little more than a Batman knockoff, a rich playboy (like Bruce Wayne) who fought petty crooks and lame supervillains with a kid sidekick (Speedy, later Arsenal), a bunch of archery-motif paraphernalia (Arrowcar, Arrowplane, Arrowcave) and a gimmick (trick arrows, in lieu of a utility belt).

As you’d imagine about a guy who persists in bringing a bow and arrow to gunfights, Green Arrow never made the big time. He toiled away as a backup character in “More Fun” and “Adventure Comics” for two decades, using “boxing-glove arrows” and “handcuff arrows” in his second-rate war on crime.

But you have to give him points for persistence. When interest in superheroes waned in the ’50s, most Spandex types were canceled. Only Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Aquaman and, yes, Green Arrow managed to remain in print more or less continuously from the ’40s to the present.

Ollie’s big break came when he was invited to join the World’s Greatest Heroes in “Justice League of America” No. 4 (May ‘61). Of course, being partnered with powerhouses like Wonder Woman and Superman, his primary duty was to say “Great Scott!” frequently. But, again, he was persistent and was a mainstay of the team for many years.

And a funny thing happened in “Justice League of America” No. 75 (November ‘ 69): He grew a personality! A virtual cipher for 25 years, Green Arrow was granted a left-wing persona by new JLA writer Denny O’Neil – and grew immensely popular. He argued with the other, more conservative Leaguers about “corporate fat cats” and took to fighting “The Man.” He teamed with the right-wing Green Lantern in a memorable series that argued politics as much as it battled bad guys. He lost his fortune, donned spiffy new duds and started battling crime at “street level.” He also suddenly developed a reputation as a ladies’ man, and swept resident JLA hottie Black Canary off her feet.

Finally, the poor man’s Batman had found a unique niche. He became a popular guest star, as much for his political rants as for his bowmanship. He eventually dropped the trick-arrow nonsense, and went after crooks in the grim ‘n’ gritty fashion of the ’80s. His roving eye proved a trial for Black Canary, but added to his over-the-top, anything-goes, Quixotic appeal to fans. By 1988 he had his own title for the first time. . .

. . .and then was blown to tiny bits! The more sedate Connor Hawke proved not as popular in the role, and “Green Arrow” was canceled with issue No. 137 in 1998. The Amazing Arbolester seemed to have run his course.

Until now, that is, and the advent of Kevin Smith. The first issue of the all-new “Green Arrow” doesn’t reveal how Ollie survived his abrupt fulmination, but it’s coming. And comics fans are already salivating.

How will former partner Arsenal react to his foster father’s return? What will Connor do, if the original returns to stake his claim to the “Green Arrow” mantle? What about Black Canary, who’s now dating Dr. Mid-Nite of the Justice Society? And will the Sagittary Sleuth remain his blustery self now that he’s had a visit to the Other Side?

Smith promises his contractual 12-issue stint will answer all questions, and set up the Battling Bowman for an exciting new run. Smith has even evinced interest in continuing the series after his year is up, should his film commitments allow.

Slow Week!

February 2nd, 2001 @ 4:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • It’s been a very, very slow week here at News Askew….We’ve got just a few newsbites for ya today. Sometimes, the news just runs a little thin. Reports from the set have been scant this week, so we’re a bit unsure of who and what is filming, though we imagine Kevin will check in at least sometime this weekend with a report. Also, the AICN update from Mysterio next week may fill in some of the gaps that have been left behind by the regular reports and Psycomic columns. We’ll do our best to keep things covered here on the east coast, as aside from the flick, there’s always more to say. As for today, though, just a few newsbites and it’s Miller time:

  • Here’s an interesting story regarding Heidi Klum turning down a role that Kevin generously offered her in Jay & Bob. It might have been a sizeable part, too, as the article mentions she was needed for six weeks. Thanks to New York Magazine for the article. Check it out:
Heidi Klum Resists an Offer

It looks like Matt and Ben aren’t good enough for at least one model. A Hollywood insider tells us that runway and print superstar Heidi Klum was offered a part in Kevin Smith’s latest film, but the bombshell said no thanks. The movie, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, is the latest installment in the red-hot director’s so-called “New Jersey Chronicles” and stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, George Carlin, Chris Rock, and a slew of other A-listers. Smith was impressed by Klum’s comic turn in the upcoming Miramax flick Blow Dry, so he reached out. But Klum’s rep confirms that she declined the role because it would coincide with a cover shoot for Arena and commitments for her new fragrance. “She’s a model,” says her spokesperson. “To be in L.A. for six weeks doesn’t make sense, especially because this film is shooting in February and March. She hopes to get a movie in spring or summer.” Let’s hope it’s during swimsuit season.

Likely, Developing The Monkey would have brought this up eventually! The column remains sorely missed.

  • The Wizard contest to win a walk-on in “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” was spoofed in a recent web comic called Nowhere Man. Check it out HERE.
  • Jason Biggs will be appearing on The Tonight Show Monday, February 5th…Again, likely to promote his upcoming flick — Hopefully a Jay & Bob mention will get worked in there, though.
  • Jason Lee’s proposed Airwalk shoe reissue deal has fallen through. Jason has informed us that they just weren’t able to meet his terms. Real bummer, folks.

Any Technical Problems?

January 31st, 2001 @ 5:16 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Just wanted to check and make sure you’re not having any glitches with this site or the Scooping The Monkey area. We’re working on some additions over there, so watch for it. In the meantime, if you’re having any technical problems with the site being slow, talkbacks not loading, or strange behavior on the Scooping The Monkey site, be sure and post about it here in the Talkbacks. We’ll see what we can do to fix it. If you’re having a problem, be sure to post your PC and operating system type along with the browser you’re using. Just doing our part to keep the site in tiptop shape for ya. Often a problem is localized to just one machine which makes it hard to tackle, but if there’s any common trouble going on, we’d like to get it fixed up for ya.

By the way, we saw the IMDB report of Kev’s words against Premiere Magazine…We aren’t running their story again because we ran it last week in the news. It’s all the same stuff.

Thanks, and now back to the update:

  • Jason Biggs will appear today on MTV’s Total Request Live to promote his new flick, “Saving Silverman”. Maybe he’ll mention Jay & Bob, too? Commentary

  • Things have been surprisingly quiet, though we assume filming still continues to go well. Likely there’s been some more quiet days on the set after all the excitement last week. Expect the bulk of the news to be relating to J&SBSB, and keep checking Scooping The Monkey for exclusive pics, set reports, updated cast info, and more. We’re still waiting for 4 DVDs to arrive in the View Askew realm: The Clerks cartoon, Dogma SE, A Better Place, and Drawing Flies. Plus we’ve got the upcoming Green Arrow books and the Bluntman & Chronic books that will tie in to the new flick. So, while it may seem like a lot of the site’s focused on the movie, we’ll do our best to keep it varied.

Anyone watching Survivor? So what’s the word so far? Seems like more of the same. TV’s being taken over by reality shows, and frankly, while they’re fun, there’s just too damn many of them. With February sweeps coming up, there’s going to be way too many excuses to sit lazily in front of the TV set. Hurry up, Spring! What else is everyone watching on TV lately? Anyway, let’s see what’s new today, though it’s another fairly short update:

Mysterio/AICN Set Report #2!

January 30th, 2001 @ 6:08 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by NYYThurman & Steven Godfrey

  • Mysterio continues his extensive on-set reports from Los Angeles today with a new edition of his column that covers the on-set happenings at “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”. His report rivals our own On Location reports in size, so grab a drink or a sandwich or something and settle in before you start on this one. The most interesting revelations of this week involve the fact that Kevin and Scott are filming alternate takes of scenes to make them TV-friendly, as Miramax feels the film will play well and be easy to sell to a network if there’s a clean version available. Must be very difficult for Kevin to have to write and manage 2 scripts and 2 versions of the film right off the bat, especially considering the amount of colorful dialogue we’ve heard that’s in this one.

Also, it seems that George Carlin spent a whole day filming on the set, and that some celebs continue to stop by to visit. For the full report, visit Aint It Cool News! We’ll soon be making all these available at “Scooping The Monkey” as well for your convenience, with thanks to AICN and Mysterio.
