- We mentioned George Carlin’s New York appearance coming up yesterday, but here’s an even better one! Mr. Carlin is performing in Red Bank on February 11th at the Count Basie Theater. There’s probably even a better chance of George talking about the new flick, as he recently did a day of filming on the set of Jay & Bob. If there’s tickets left, check out the show and send in any info you might find!
- Kevin’s name gets a mention in a Yahoo article discussing the whole “A Film By…” credit before or after a feature that has people debating. Kevin of course doesn’t like the idea, as he feels a lot more folks than the director deserve credit for the finished product.

- On February 8th, George Carlin will be performing at the Sheas in Buffalo, New York. We doubt he’ll mention anything about Jay & Bob, but ya never know. Either way, Carlin’s performances are always a blast, so if you’re in the area and looking for a fun night out and tickets are left, get ‘em!
- Here’s an intersting rumor from the Silver Bullet Comics rumor realm:
- Finally today, we’ve got a very nice fan-made mock-up of a Bluntman & Chronic comic book cover, made with watersoluble pencils. It’s nice work! Click the thumbnail for a better look, and we’ll see ya later with more news from the set!
Commentary & Stuff…
- Happy Saturday, folks. Today’s update represents a catch-up of sorts. Due to the exciting nature of the scoops from the day at the El Rey theater, we placed some other stuff on the back burner. Today, we’ve got all that stuff, as well as the first content exclusive to the “Scooping The Monkey” website. Over there, we’ve got a better shot of the poster that we displayed yesterday, an alternate marquee shot, and a few more stories from fans who were on the set doing extra duties. In those scoops, we’ve got some more details on the film, characters, and plot. As always, we’ll warn about spoilers, and advise you to read at your own risk. Kevin also posted regarding Thursday’s shot, which sounds like one of the most exciting days in View Askew history. Glad so many of you could be there to witness it.
A couple of interesting things learned from one of the scoopers’ notes was that Kevin said the Dogma SE DVD will probably be on hold until the movie wraps up, so that puts a release at least into March, probably more like April or May. With the new flick due late summer, who knows, they may wait and release the DVD as a tie-in or even include a J&SBSB teaser or preview on that sucker! Also, Malcolm Ingram (he of “Drawing Flies” fame) was shooting extra stuff on set JUST for inclusion on the eventual Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back DVD. Cool, cool stuff. Should be an even bigger disc that Dogma.
With Superbowl and Survivor tomorrow, this will be the only weekend update, so hopefully it’ll hold you over until we’re back on the air on Monday. Until then, here’s the news:
Kevin On Thursday’s Shoot, More…
- Kevin’s been great about keeping the Internet denziens posted on the happenings from the set, and has the biggest report yet regarding Thursday’s shooting. He himself declares that this post contains spoilers, though anything here is mild compared to yesterday. So, read on, or skip down to the next story, it’s up to you. Here’s Kevin:
I got to dance with Morris Day, Jerome, and the Time (Buster, I can see your envy-green glow from all the way over on this side of the country).
I got to play with Dante, Randal, Willam, Steve-Dave, Walt, Trish, Alyssa, Banky, and Hooper again.
I got to see Shannon Elizabeth take a classic fall.
I watched Will Ferrell and Jay boogie down together.
I did a crane-into-steadicam shot that’s probably one of the most visually impressive moves of my usually visually static career.
And Jay got his first on-screen kiss.
It’s all downhill from here…
Not really – some of the best sequences are yet to come. But good Lord, last night we got some great stuff. And everybody was in top form: great deliveries all around.
If you’re a hardcore VA fan and you hate the movie, you’ll at least love that sequence; that I can promise you.
The two days before that we shot some hillarious stuff with Will, Judd, Jay, the Orang (whose name is Tango), and me. It was flat-out vulgar, comedy gold.
Fuck on a stick, this movie’s looking excellent. Yes, it’s funny (at least to me), but what I think will be most surprising about it is how ‘J&SBSB’ actually looks like a real, honest to God movie.
I mean, heavens – we’ve even got wire work coming up in the next two weeks (flying stunt people through the air and whatnot).
I guess it was inevitable, but I’ve grown up as a filmmaker… while making the most immature, regressive movie of the bunch. Ironic.
Props go out to a phenomenal crew, led by our superb A.D. Tim Bird and our champion D.P. Jamie Anderson. Tim’s keeping things flowing smoothly (with no loss of temper), and Jamie making it all look real purty. These guys are keepers.
Gotta go now. I’ve got a twelve thirty call time for a day in which I finally get to kick back and just direct as opposed to direct and act (a very, very loose definition, that last one).
O-ee-o-ee-o!
And a follow-up post from earlier today:
Yesterday was the end of the second week on the schedule, but only the end of the first real five day week of the shoot (week one was a three day week with a pre-shoot day). We have forty two shooting days left, which would seem like a long time to go, were we not having such a blast.
Yesterday, I laughed harder than I ever have before while shooting a flick; so loud, in fact, did I laugh, that I almost blew a take. It’s Will Ferrell, man. God, he’s just too funny. And on top of that, he’s a sweetheart and a half. He reminds me of Jason Lee. They both talk about their characters’ behavioral quirks after takes, as if they were real. It’s along the lines of “He’s not a smart guy, is he?” and “He just feels the need to share with strangers,” followed by a short burst of laughter. I can’t wait until those two are working side-by-side. I doubt we’ll be able to get anything done, so violently will I be laughing.
We watch dailies from the El Rey Premiere scene this afternoon, and then edit right afterwards. Can’t wait to get my hands on that Avid mouse again, so we can tame this beast into something watchable.

First Pics From “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”!
- Hey folks…There’s some SPOILERS ahead, minor ones, but still, spoilers all the same. Since as you know, many fans had the opportunity to be extras at the El Rey theater yesterday, naturally, some reports were going to come in. Naturally, we got a ton of them here and Aint It Cool News even posted some pics from the event, which include a certain film that’s playing on the marquee. We’ve got those shots, and a summary of what we learned about the production. Naturally, we don’t want to ruin any of the film for those of you that want to go in cold (as hard as that is these days), so we’re going to hide as much as we can. We’ve blurred the thumbnails above, but click them if you’d like to take a look. Also, swipe the text below if you’d like to read the information learned about the film. Bear in mind these are not major spoilers, just some small tidbits:
- The film on the marquee is a “Bluntman & Chronic” movie, which is apparently the film within the film. In this film, Jason Biggs plays the “Bluntman” character and James Van Der Beek plays “Chronic”.
- The AICN scooper saw a scene being filmed with Jason Lee and Dwight Ewell walking out of the theater and fighting. We’re not sure which charaters Lee and Ewell were playing at the time, but it’s likely that we’re seeing Banky & Hooper there.
And finally, this isn’t much of a spoiler, just a confirmation, but we hear that Joey Lauren Adams DOES reprise her role as Alyssa Jones! We’ll have more from the set as it becomes available.
EXCLUSIVE! J&SBSB On-Set Report & Character Info!
- Well, this scoop may be even bigger than the pics above…Again, no major spoilers here except for details of who was involved in the scene that was shot yesterday and which characters play what…So if you’re curious about where Shannon Elizabeth, Will Ferrel, and others fall into place in the flick, swipe the text below. Mike’s done a great job of summarizing what he saw on set, and it sounds like extras were in for a treat yesterday, as practically every major player was on the scene to appear outside the movie theater (we’re guessing that a lot of the previous characters from the other films appear in this scene and possibly no others). One of the scenes described here is apparently the end of the film, so it could also be considered a SPOILER, but it doesn’t give too much away, at least from our standpoint, having not read the script. As always, our standpoint on this is READ AT YOUR OWN RISK! If you don’t want to know anything about the film, just move on. If you don’t care if some details are spoiled, swoop away:
The shoot today consisted of two scenes. One was inside a small concert hall where Morris Day and the Time were performing (In case you didn’t know, Morris was Prince’s uh, nemesis in Purple Rain), and Jay and Silent Bob are in attendance, along with Will Ferrall who plays an FBI agent, and Shannon Elizabeth who is a captured convict, (her prison uniform number is 3737), also next to them was an orangutan. Jay and Silent Bob jump on the stage to join them, this is the end scene of the movie.
The other scene was in front of the world premiere of Bluntman and Chronic, and all the familiar faces are leaving in pairs discussing the film – Dante and Randall, Will Ferrall and Shannon Elizabeth , Steve-Dave and Walt, Trish (the dish) Jones, and Alyssa Jones (Yes, Joey Lauren Adams reprises this role), and Banky and Hooper. In front of the movie theatre are posters for fictional movies (Good Will Hunting 2 – “How do you like THEM apples?”, Snootchies, Bussing (In Clerks font), See if you can see… THE SAILBOAT…and the hysterical Bluntman and Chronic poster of Van der Beek and Biggs)
I got a chance to share a couple laughs with Jay, nodded and said hi to Kev (He was always busy – surprise – but he took time out to sign autographs for fans.), got to talking to one of the members of “The Time”, Jerome the percussionist, was very cool… and was thrilled to spent about 10 minutes just talking to Brian O’Halloran – he was very cool, and we just shot the shit about everything. Apparently, this was his only scene, he is to go back to Red Bank and shoot Quick Stop, which he described as a “Fucking freezer”. Brian was most friendly, what a super guy. Saw Jason Lee, but he was unapproachable, pretty much, and he got the most applause when he jumped on the stage to say hello to the crowd. Jason was dressed as Banky, and looked perfect. Saw Randall during rehearsal for his scene, but couldn’t talk to him. Also saw Joey as we were leaving, and she looked gorgeous as ever. Caught a glimpse of Hooper but we were too far away to say anything to him.
Surprise Celeb spotting, Ali Larter (The Whipped Cream Bikini chick from Varsity Blues), we spotted her talking to Jay as we were walking in. Can’t make any speculation as to whether she is in the film or not… BUT, upstairs in the balcony area of the theatre was an interview set up, We saw her being interviewed along with Jason Lee, Mewes, Kev, etc… so we can only continue to speculate…
Very interesting stuff there! We’ll continue our extensive coverage of the filming here and over at our Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back site! Stay tuned as more exciting developments take place.
Dogma DVD: Still No Date & Doherty…
- Due to the overwhelming amount of e-mail and requests for an update on the Dogma: Special Edition DVD, we felt we’d better do an update about it even though there’s really no new news, just in the hopes that the mails will stop! Although chains like Amazon and Best Buy are all reporting a release date of April 10, this is all just speculation as there still has been no official resolution to the problems and there is NO set release date. As soon as an official announcement is made, we will have it, rest assured. We want the disc as bad as all of you, and are sad that it’s still not on the shelves. We’ve got a lot of contacts that are involved with the disc though, and are doing our best to keep in touch with them and bring any updates we can. It’s just that lately, there hasn’t been much to say.
Another popular e-mail subject of late is Shannen Doherty‘s involvement in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, due to her name being listed on the Internet Movie Database in conjunction with the film. As far as we know, unless this was meant to be some big surprise, Kevin has not admitted to Doherty’s involvement, and, given their past relationship during Mallrats and her current TV schedule, we highly doubt it. Still, with a film full of cameos, anything is possible. If we hear that she is officially on board, we’ll report it, otherwise, chalk it up as IMDB’s error.
