Kevin From The Set, Diedrich Bader On Board…

January 20th, 2001 @ 7:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jess, Gramp, Courtlyn & Jared

  • Kevin was kind enough to hit us with back to back updates from the set’s second day of shooting, and then the end of the week wrap-up. In them, he confirms news on Psycomic, Duchov’s outs, and even addresses folks who are worried about the film’s cast. Our take: Look at how big this cast list is getting. Now, assume that the flick will likely be driven by Jay & Silent Bob, with an incredible amount of cameos along the way. We’re expecting it to be just that – A solid 90 minutes or so of jokes and cameos from past characters from the Askewniverse as well as a ton of familar faces from present-day Hollywood. Kevin’s only spending a day or two with most of these folks. That should amount to only a few minutes of screentime at most (one scene, probably). So if there’s someone you dislike, hey, cover your eyes or something. It’s going to be cool, folks. Here’s Kevin:
Day Two: Biggs and Van Der Beek = Comedy gods

Scoff if you will, but it’s true. I promise.

Had a really swell day today, packed full of twenty two set-ups. And it was all gold, I tells ya! GOLD!

James was really, really funny. Jason (Biggs) delivered in spades.

And Mewes? Phenomenal.

Top all of that with a monkey, and you gots laughs gay-lore!

God, I wish I could let slip with the particulars of the scene, but I think it’s best if you’re just surprised by the whole, chaotic mess.

Followed a healthy day of shooting with the viewing of yesterday’s Carlin dailies. Man, were they good. Carlin was nothing short of brilliant. And if this shit can make me – ME! Who’s been living with the script all this time – laugh, then I think it’ll pull at least a chuckle out of you guys.

Tomorrow’s the last day of week one, and then over the weekend, it’s into the editing room to piece together what we have already.

In other news, yes – Psycomic seems to have died. No immediate plans for the continuation of the column. I’m a little preoccupied right now…

And sadly, Duchov is, indeed, out. We couldn’t make the schedule work. No worries, though – we’ll work together in the near future on something else.

But wait until you hear who’s replacing him…

End of the first week of shooting

Nine more weeks to go.

It’s been a great start. I have zero complaints. We’ve assembled a fantastic crew who’ve been incredibly easy to work with. Jamie (our DP) is nothing short of a master. There’s something to be said for the wisdom that comes with age.

We started the morning with the last piece of Biggs’ and Van Der Beek’s scene. Both real gents. Both real funny. They worked alongside Diedrich Bader (he of ‘Drew Carey’ fame, but much revered in our household for his turn in ‘Office Space’), who turned in his second incredibly funny day on the flick.

The rest of the day we spent shooting a stunt, and then picking up some pieces with the orangutan. Good stuff.

I know we’ve only been shooting for a week, but in all honesty, it’s feeling like this is the funniest flick we’ve made yet. Mind you: it’s all jokes with very little substance, but it’s really, really hysterical stuff. Mewes is at the top of his game – better than he was in ‘Dogma’ (which I’ve felt was his career highlight, until recently).

I don’t know. I know I’m waxing a bit hyberolic here, but I’ve got a really good feeling about this one.

And for those of you who are carping about the weird and varied casting in this flick (particularly that of Biggs and Van Der Beek), insisting we’re getting away from our roots…

Lighten up. Fuck, you don’t even know what the movie’s about. Trust me – all the casting makes sense.

We’ll be keeping track of all the news from the set over at our J&SBSB website, so be sure and check there so you don’t miss anything. Soon, we’ll also begin carrying more exclusive content over there (the cast list continues to grow with each and every new announcement, including the Diedrich Bader one from above).

Psycomic NOT Continuing…

January 20th, 2001 @ 6:59 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Mike Harris & Christopher

  • Even after reading Kev’s stuff above, in case there are still any misconceptions, yes, Psycomic has indeed gone away. Kevin’s busy enough with his directing duties and otherwise, and seems to be quite content keeping us informed through the WWWBoard, so we don’t expect “Developing The Monkey” to continue in its current form. News Askew will offer the current archive of Psycomic columns as well for your convenience on the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back site. Here’s the official notice that appeared on Psycomic itself yesterday:
To Psycomic Users:
www.psycomics.com will be concluding operations this month. The site will be available, in its present state, but it will not be updated. This will allow you the opportunity to browse the features that already exist on the site. We very much appreciate all of the support you have shown the site over the past months.

Final Clerks DVD Cover Art!

January 20th, 2001 @ 6:57 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by JoBlo.Com

  • Thanks to Joey Baloney at Joblo.Com, we’ve got here on pretty good authority what looks to be the final cover art for the Clerks Uncensored DVD which arrives later next month. You can see the package promises a 2-disc collection filled with lots of extras. Fantastic choice of cover art, too, and much better than the rumored Clerks logo cover from a while back. Remember, the disc arrives on February 20, 2001. We’ll try and get an advanced review copy for an early look as soon as they’re available.

  • Kevin gets a mention and a quote in the latest column from Jeffrey Wells, regarding his recent dissing in Premiere Magazine, firing back with a stab of his own:
Smith vs. Premiere

As the Word item on this page reports, Premiere recently ran a short list of people in the film business whom, the editors feel, are losing their edge. I disagreed with their putting Kevin Smith on this list, and said so. Then I wrote Smith and told him what I’d written. He wrote back with a “thanks,” and then wrote, “And for the record . I laughed when I read that piece in Premiere. If making a flick about religion that’s peppered with d**k and fart jokes which results in multiple death threats means I’m losing my edge, then I’d like to know what’s considered edgy. ”

“And considering the source, I find the label ironic anyway. I’m not losing half the edge that Premiere’s losing in subscriptions and circulation. They’re certainly on the edge, all right – the edge of the periodicals grave. And you can print that.”

  • Jason Lee’s new film, “Big Trouble”, has a positive script review that appears on Screenwriter’s Utopia.
  • Expect trailers for Ben Affleck in “Pearl Harbor” and Chris Rock in “Osmosis Jones” during the Superbowl next Sunday.
  • Here’s yet another pic of Mewes and Pauly from Shore’s site about his new flick.
  • Shannon Elizabeth will be on MTV Sunday at 1 PM this weekend for a Super Bowl themed show. She might mention Jay & Silent Bob as she tends to talk about current projects in interviews. Check it out.
  • Some online websites are rescheduling the A BETTER PLACE DVD for March 6, 2001. This seems in line with the timeframes Vincent has been discussing. Could we be seeing a release soon? We’ll let ya know, as we’re expecting check discs once pressing happens. Once we’ve got those, you know a release won’t be far off.
  • There’s apparently even more Clerks references on that upcoming album from “The Ataris”. The disc streets later next month. Here’s a sampling:
Okay, today was a good day
I didn’t even have to use my AK
At least I didn’t get my heart broken anyway
Wasting time in east New Jersey
‘Cause I can tell you ’bout the snow-covered rooftops
Sunset, shooting stars and picturesque backdrops
Or how I went and hung out at Quick Stop
Pretending that I was in “Clerks”
  • Here’s an update on Region 4 DVDs for Australia: There’s still no news about Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy or the Clerks Cartoon being released by anyone on DVD (though the cartoon series was on television). Dogma, however will be released on February 14 with the same features as the US version we have currently: Cast and crew bios, Interviews, Trailer, English subtitle. Those of you with multi-region players may wanna hold out for the US Special Edition.

PII-400 (Or Thereabouts) Needed…

January 18th, 2001 @ 9:53 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad

  • I know I’m starting to sound like a broken record here, but I need to come to the masses here again with another request – I need a fairly powerful PC for a project I’m currently working on (Around a Pentium II 400 or something close to that). I don’t need a monitor or some of the other components, just the basic stuff. So, if you’ve got something you think might help that you’d be willing to sell at a reasonable price, PLEASE drop me a line and we’ll talk. Thanks, and now back to our regular News Askew programming.

“Jay & Bob” Fan-Made Teaser Poster!

January 18th, 2001 @ 4:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by William Coughlan

  • Well, Psycomic might be going away but that doesn’t mean we still can’t be excited about the new flick…Remember that teaser poster that we posted a LONG while back that was created when VA5 was just a dream? Well, the original creator of that, William Coughlan, has updated the teaser and sent it to us in 3 formats, small, medium, and large. This is a VERY cool little one-sheet, definitely fan-oriented, but if you’re reading this site you’ll certainly appreciate it.

Keep in mind this is a fan-made poster and not official in the least. Still, I’d frame it and hang it up. Check it out and post your opinions in the Talkbacks – We’re quite fond of it!

  • We’re unable to confirm this, and it might just be a mistake, but E! Online passively mentioned that Eliza Dushku (who Kevin discussed in a recent Psycomic column) will appear in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. We haven’t seen this announced anywhere else though, so we’re keeping her off the official cast list until this can be confirmed or denied.
  • Gig Records has done a huge update on their A Better Place soundtrack page. They confirm the release date for the CD and the DVD as February (tentative, of course, but a good sign), have a page of really nice photos from the film and bascally lots of information for those who haven’t seen it. Surf over and check it out. It’s a good disc to add to your View Askew soundtrack collection.
  • Speaking of View Askew DVD releases, according to the “Indie DVD Product Timeline”, their Drawing Flies DVD is now scheduled for a third quarter 2001 release! This is the first time we’ve seen anything official about the release date on this film. We’ll keep you posted.
  • “Lee World”, a Jason Lee fan site , have added multimedia featuring Lee movies and sounds, a new section called LeeXperiance in which fans can post stories on meetings with the guy, a poll, news, and more. Surf over to check it out.
  • Speaking of Lee, here’s some info from an Excite story on Lee’s “Stealing Stanford”:
“HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – Megan Mullally, one of NBC’s “Will & Grace” comedy quartet, is in final negotiations to join the cast of “Stealing Stanford,” which would mark her first leading role in a feature film.

The comedy is about a middle-class man (Jason Lee), who turns to a life of crime in order to finance his niece’s college education. Tom Green will co-star.

  • Kevin and Clerks get their fair share of coverage at this story at the My Video Store website – A Sundance retrospective.
  • “Almost Famous”‘s theatrical release in the UK has been pushed back a week to February 2nd.

Psycomic Going Under: Column Future Unknown…

January 18th, 2001 @ 12:22 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jonathan Ashley, Jonathan Ashley & Jason Enneking

  • Psycomic writer Gabe Soria just mentioned in his latest Psycomic column that the site is going under. He and all the other writers for the site were just “given their walking papers”:
Well, it finally happened. Psycomic has officially become the punchline to a joke (before today we were just the unofficial punchline to a host of jokes, especially on that there Warren Ellis message board on Delphi). What’s all the ha-ha about? Well… Joe D., Al Tran, Psycomic’s columnists, our freelancers and yours truly have been given their walking papers. Yup, we are now a “dead dot com.”

We’re not sure of the future of the “Developing The Monkey” column that Kevin has been writing for the site, but we assume there’s a couple possibilities: (1) Another site may pick up the column and continue it, employing Kevin and paying him for his work, (2) Kevin may continue the column at the View Askew site or here at News Askew, (3) Kevin will not write official columns, but instead just use the View Askew WWWBoard to keep us informed on the flick. As soon as we know, you’ll know.

First Day Down, Van Der Beek In…

January 17th, 2001 @ 11:21 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Bank Holdup

  • Well, the headline pretty much speaks for itself. Kevin’s finished the first OFFICIAL day of shooting the flick, and it sounds like it started off just splendidly. Great to hear. Here’s the director himself:
The Official Day One In The Can

Finished the first scheduled day a few hours ago. Wonderful, funny stuff with George Carlin who was – once again – such a generous, professional performer.

We’ve seen two days worth of dailies, which look really good, and play very funny. The practical special effects by Vince Guastini and his amazing crew of way-too-talented sculptors are top notch. Jamie (our D.P.) is one helluva shooter.

Tomorrow: all Biggs and Van Der Beek action!

Co-starring Jay and Silent Bob, of course.
