- Ready for a good laugh? Jimmy Kimmel’s late night talk show is still hilarious, and girlfriend/guest Sarah Silverman recently showed up with a video featuring one of our past View Askew cast — Matt Damon. Damon has been a long running gag on the show, where nightly, Jimmy would apologize for running out of time and having to bump him off the guest roster. Now, Damon participates in a hilarious sketch, showing what a good sport he is and a fantastic sense of humor he’s got.
- We mentioned this a while back, but it’s nice to have it for the archives all the same — Here’s a 1+ minute audio commercial on XM that Kevin and Scott recorded to advertise SModcast. Nothing new, but not available online anywhere else. Listen (in MP3 format) and enjoy.
- Want more clippage? A local radio show in Las Vegas recently interviewed outspoken religious fanatic Shirley Phelps and brought up “Red State”. Listen to this clip and see what she had to say.
- What ELSE is Jason Lee doing during the “My Name Is Earl” downtime? Looks to us like he might be doing some skating again! Look to the middle of this “The Berries” video from Stereo for some Lee trickage.
- We don’t have the clippage, sorry to say, but hear that our beloved Jason Mewes appeared on the brilliantly funny show “Head Case” on Starz this week. He played a Fedex-like delivery guy. It should be re-aring until the next new episode, so check your local listings. We haven’t seen the show to verify, so if anyone else catches it or has a capture, let us know.
- Enjoy the Superbowl and/or the commercials today, if you’re watching. Catch ya next time, and thanks for stopping by.

- Jason Lee and cast of “Earl” to be on American Chopper this Thursday night (1/31) at 9 PM on TLC:
“Mikey gets in the game and heads up OCC’s latest creation — a Wolverine bike for the University of Michigan’s Mott Children’s Hospital. The cast from NBC’s “My Name is Earl” bursts onto the scene and gets the OCC team to build a My Name is Earl bike.” - The Stanford Daily has an op-ed piece about the modernization of religion. You guessed it, “Dogma” shows up inside:
My fellow New Jerseyan Kevin Smith appears to see the comic surrealism as well. In Smith’s facetious 1999 film “Dogma,” a misguided effort to modernize the Catholic Church’s image unfolds through a campaign entitled, “Catholicism Wow!” Complete with a revamped, “less depressing” and utterly absurd Jesus figure bearing the name “Buddy Christ,” the attempt at Catholic modernization is portrayed by Smith as both silly and hopeless. - Kevin’s recent blog comments about tightening up the Oscars and other award ceremonies get a mention in this PopMatters article regarding the writers’ strike and the award season.
- A recent review of “This Film is Not Yet Rated” on DVD reveals that Kevin appears in the deleted scenes area of the disc. So, whether you’ve seen this fascinating film about the MPAA process or not, now’s a great time to pick up a copy on DVD. Kevin’s of course in the feature as well, considering the fact that the organization slapped his first ever flick with an NC-17 (initially) just for dialogue. Yeah, you remember!
- Finally today, a bit more UK Press for the newly airing “Reaper” across the pond. In this small article, Kevin expresses his shock in being asked to direct the pilot:
“It’s very strange because I normally don’t direct television,” Kevin tells Cw.com. “Nobody ever asked me to do it before. I’ve had offers to come in on sitcoms which have already been up and running. But this was interesting because my agent called and said there’s a pilot of this show and they want you to direct it. I was like, why would anyone, based on my body of work, want me to direct a TV pilot?“Generally my stuff seems to be very chatty, frank and obscene. I was so puzzled, I said I would like to read it and see who’s stupid enough to want to hire me. I read the script and I just dug it so much.”
Kevin was attracted to the Reaper pilot script as it reminded him of hit Simon Pegg film Shaun Of The Dead.
“I’m a big Shaun Of The Dead fan,” he says. “The sensibilities of the characters in Reaper are similar to my characters. The only difference between the characters I write and the characters in Reaper is none of these characters use four letter words because we’re on TV.”
“Reaper” returns Stateside to the CW with a new episode on March 4th.

- Bostonist reports on the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film’s Top 100 list for this year – Their one hundred funniest films of all time. “Clerks II” and “Chasing Amy” take spots 77 and 79, repsectively.
- Some congrats to Askew and ancillary Askew types for the Oscars this year. No major nominations, however, here’s a few you might be interested in:
BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE – Casey Affleck for “The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford” (brother of Ben Affleck, appeared in “Good Will Hunting”)
BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE – Amy Ryan for “Gone Baby Gone” (directed by Ben Affleck, of course)
3 Nominations for Matt Damon’s “Bourne Ultimatum”, for score, editing, and mixing. - Though “Red State” is far from our minds with the current flick filming, the controversial Phelps family is keeping the press alive – Ever since hearing rumors of the film’s theme, they’ve been characteristically outspoken on the project. Cinematical picks up this latest quote from Shirley Phelps regarding the project (which, mind you, no one has yet seen the script for aside from a few friends and insiders at View Askew).
- The unforgettable Golgothan is one of the subjects of this fun little piece on Sewer Monsters in film. The creature joins the wonderful CHUD among others:
Dogma: In Kevin Smith’s religious comedy, the Golgothan is the excrement monster that Jason Lee sends after Jay and Silent Bob. He’s made up of all the evil shit from all over the world, and even has his own action figure that farts when you squeeze it. Unlike the Charmin. - “Reaper” is just now hitting the UK via their network channel E4, and getting some well-deserved good press. We like what Times Online had to say the best:
Reaper, E4, 9pmImagine a Simon Pegg/Nick Frost-style couple of buddies dropped into a comedy episode of Heroes, and you have Reaper. Tonight’s pilot, in which our champion Sam (Bret Harrison) finds out that his parents sold his soul to the Devil (Ray Wise), also benefits from the direction of the Clerks legend Kevin Smith – it’s great fun, but it’ll be interesting to see how it develops next week without Smith at the helm.
TV Scoop also gives the show a nice little review. - Looks like the Damon-Affleck produced adaptation of “A People’s History of the United States” is finally getting underway, in miniseries form. NPR reports.
- Kevin gets a nod for his “Southland Tales” cameo in this positive capsule review of the film from Cleveland.com.
- And finally today, we love SignOnSanDiego’s take on “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” when listing their upcoming flicks to watch for this year:
“Zack and Miri Make a Porno†(Fall): Written and directed by Kevin Smith. That’s enough for us.
We couldn’t have typed it better ourselves. Be sure to visit our production page for a complete list of the latest multimedia and press from the film. We’ve just added a few today. See ya next time!

- We’re kicking off the ‘Bites with some nice scannage today — Thanks to Empire magazine in the UK, who always kick butt with the Kevin coverage, here’s a fun piece titled “My Movie Mastermind”. In this feature, they quiz filmmakers and actors on their own work. How did Kevin stack up? Click the pic and see for yourself.
- Jason Lee reveals that he doesn’t have any current work on the slate, though he looks forward to getting back to work as “Earl” once the writer’s strike is resolved. Could this open up the chance for small appearance in “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”? You never know.
- FileFront and OneUp are also jealously drooling over Kevin’s customized Nintendo Wii console.
- Australia’s “The Age” charts the landmark year for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” star Seth Rogen, cikting his successful 2007 and the path that’s brought him into the Askewniverse.
- In addition to the coolness that is “Dexter”, here’s another reason to subscribe to Showtime — Clerks II will debut on the network this Saturday, January 12th. Check your local listings. As we believe some cable and satellite systems also offer HD versions of the channel, this will be a chance for some of you to catch the colorful flick in the best resolution available today. Enjoy.

- Reaper will premiere on the digital TV channel E4 in the UK at the end of this month. It also should begin airing on Channel 4 later in the year.
- Also today, does this tee remind anyone of a famous Clerks II line? Catch ya next time…

- This week’s Entertainment Weekly sees columnist (and famous author) Stephen King recapping his top 10 movies for the year — In it, he lists “Gone, Baby Gone” at #2 with high praise for Affleck’s skill as a director.
- A reader noted that there was another reference to the Askewniverse in a Top 10 list (linked from the Top 10 fake bands list we newsbited the other day) — Check out the image used in number six of the Top 10 Kid’s list of “Ways to Kill The Mood”.
- And finally today, two astute fellas over at the Film-411 site put “Clerks” as one of their Top 5 flicks that they’d like to see made into a live action show — Hey, these guys know this was (badly) tried by before, right? Now that ANIMATED version, THAT was a show…
3. ClerksSure, it’s been done before. It’s been done well before. But it was done as a cartoon that existed as it’s own beast for the most part. A sitcom that begins more faithful to the source material could easily score big with fans of Kevin Smith’s flick as well as VH1-ers whose lives actually are complaining about their jobs and making snarky remarks about what’s happening in pop culture(which is not to say that there isn’t a helluva lot of overlap there). With this one, I’d especially want to start with a new cast and encourage everyone involved to really make it their own the way that the American version of The Office started being almost too faithful to its source material and then expanded itself to become so much more.
3. Clerks
I’d also like to see a show based on our favorite convenience store clerks, but unlike Ben I have no desire to see the roles recast. In fact, I’d like to See Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson reprise Dante and Randal and pick up the story after Clerks 2, with them running the Quik Stop. I’d want Elias in the show too, because he rules, and of course numerous cameos from Jay and Silent Bob. You’d need new characters as well, since Dante and Randal won’t want to spend all their time at the stores, and Randal deserves a love interest damnit! The one problem is Dante is married with a kid and there’s no way Rosario Dawson would do a TV show (I imagine), so we’d need to recast.
See ya soon – We’re hoping for a new SModcast tomorrow! Get that podcast downloading software ready…

- Kevin made a surprise guest appearance on XM’s “Opie And Anthony” show this morning, and our pal Will Wilkins was there to capture it for us. There’s a few drop-outs this time due to XM transmission problems, but otherwise, once again you can enjoy the Kevin goodness as he chats up the guys. MP3 format only available right HERE. Will also created and runs the brilliant Radio Askew podcast which has been showing up around once a month these days. Thanks to Will for the audio once again, and all he does to keep this stuff in our archives.
- Bullz-eye.com interviews the great Ray Wise, currently stealing the show on “Reaper” as one of the best turns as the devil in Hollywood history. Kevin’s shown some love in this interesting chat:
Bullz-Eye: So “Reaper†probably received more positive press than any other show of the new season.
Ray Wise: Yeah, I think so! We were very fortunate.
BE: I’m sure you’ve done enough TV where you don’t get too excited about a project’s long-term chances right off the bat, but did you ever find yourself slipping and thinking, “We might be onto something here?â€
RW: Oh, absolutely. Yeah, I did that from the get-go. It was a great pilot script and a great character, and I felt that, y’know, with Kevin Smith on board as our director for the pilot and as a consultant of the series, I thought we were really onto something.
BE: Were you a fan of his work?
RW: Oh, yes, of course! Tremendously, yeah. Of course, “Dogma†is a favorite Kevin Smith film of mine.
“Reaper” is currently #9 in the site’s TV Power Rankings which list the best programming currently available on the tube. - And finally today — This in from Vernon, NJ – Bear is driving car? How can that be? See ya next time.

- What’s Kevin have to say about the “Heroes: Origins” cancellation? This simple line:
May be temporary, may be permanent. Either way, I’ve still got three quarters of a script done (we weren’t gonna be shooting ’til March), so if they decide game on at a later date, I’ll be ready.
We’re betting the story will see the light of day, eventually, somehow. Even if it’s only in a NBC-funded comic form. We’ll keep you posted on the project, of course. - If you’re missing the coolest new show of the season, now is the time to catch up! “Reaper” has now been made available for purchase and download this week on iTunes. All episodes so far are now up there, including Kevin’s and the 5 subsequent episodes. The show’s starting to run its larger arc now, with some interesting subplots carrying over each week. Now’s the time to get on board if you’re not already watching.
- A slight correction to our Alanis newsbite from last update — In regards to your recent post about Alanis. After J&SBSB and Dogma, she did appear in one more film. While dating Ryan Reynolds, she had a role in his movie “Just Friends”. Oddly enough, that movie takes place in Jersey. Enjoy your weekend. We’ll check back in with any breaking news.
Anything Else Up In The Blogs?
- Kevin’s been keeping up with both the online blogs and SModcast regularly, so we hope that you’re making stops at Silent Bob Speaks, Myspace, and Quick Stop Entertainment part of your regular web travels. We’re going to stick with posting stuff from these sites that we feel might be newsworthy, but leave the more day-to-day type stuff for you to discover at those sites on your own. That being said, while the big news from Kevin’s last week of blogging surrounded the current, well, state of “Red State”, there were a few other snippets we figured we’d pull out for the news archives as well. Keep in mind, this stuff comes from last week, as Kevin has been blogging usually over the weekends, summarizing the previous week in one shot.
Here’s a few random passages from here, and our interpretation of possible hints that lie within:
“I spend most of day buried in my office, writing the second draft of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.†Even with the new stuff, I wind up taking the page count down to 110.” [NA: Sounds like we’re getting close to a good running time! Won’t be long til the scripts final now.]
“I wake up and do a radio tour for the book and “Reaperâ€, doing about ten or fifteen radio stations around the country.” [NA: If anyone has any audio captures of these interviews, let us know.]
“…I finally get to see “Spider-Man 3? – a movie in which many people cry, sing, and dance.” [NA: Sounds about right to us – nice assessment.]
“…I head home, talking to Carla about “Zack and Miri†casting en route.” [NA: We can’t wait until some of this casting is finally revealed. They’re doing a fantastic job keeping it under wraps!]
“…I shower and head to lunch with Dawn Ostroff, head of the CW, at Ca Del Sole.” [NA: More Reaper on the way, or perhaps another directing stint for another show?]
As always, the full story is available free, 24/7 via MySpace and Silent Bob Speaks! We’ll pick through the next blog entry with more observations, of course. Until then…

- Kevin joins PRI’s (public broadcasting) “Fair Game with Faith Salie” show to chat up “Reaper” and “My Boring Ass Life”. You can click here for a direct link to the MP3 audio of the broadcast. The airdate of the show was on October 9th (Tuesday) this week. Faith runs a very personable show, so enjoy it all or just skip to around 33 minutes into the show for Kevin’s segment.
- You don’t see Kevin in Wizard as much these days, due to his stepping back from the world of comics for a while. However, when his name showed up on the cover, claiming he will not only be writing/directing the new Heroes: Origins program…But that it will be the PILOT of that spinoff…We were curious. So, check out the scans above thanks to our scooper, and pay particular interest to what Kevin says about his new female character’s power:
What can you tell us about the power you plan to give your character?
It’s one that every comic book fan is very familiar with, but one that I consider to be the lamest of all the superpowers.
Care to speculate, anyone? Kevin’s not usually the repeating type, so we can’t see flying, invisibility, mind reading, invincibility…And it’s known that it’s a girl. Super strength perhaps? Hmmm. Rumor has it that the fan favorite hero of “Origins” will become a full-fledged cast member for season 3…Let’s hope it’s this one! - With more thanks to Mr. Ortega, here’s a few photos of Kevin and Jen as they appeared at the “Gone Baby Gone” premiere earlier this week, to support pal Ben Affleck’s directorial debut. The film opens on October 19th, and has been getting some fantastic reviews.
- Variety reports that Will Ferrel will headline a BIG budget theatrical version of the cult TV show we dug as kids, “Land of the Lost”. One can’t help but notice the extreme coincidence in that Ferrell’s character in Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was named Marshal Willenholly way back in 2001. We seem to recall Ratface slipping in a Sleestack refrence somewhere, too. Hey, count us in.
- In that Radio Askew interview we ran last update, Kevin was put on the spot to name his favorite TV shows — While we certainly agreed, “Lost” was strangely absent, despite Kevin’s proclaim of love for the show at the thrilling end of last season. Now, it seems he’s got “Lost” on the brain again, with its premiere just a few months away. A brief snippet from Entertainment Weekly confirms:
KEVIN SMITH: Let’s give props to Lost. How brilliant was this season finale? I mean, it’s cruel because they’re not coming back until like January, but hats off for taking a foolproof formula and spinning it to make it even better. You’re like, ”Oh my God, so now they’re all flash-forwards?! How genius is that?” … We [had] all settled into ”Okay, this is what they do, they flashback and we learn a lot about the characters.” But that whole episode, you’re sitting there going, like, ”Wait a second — is that Jack’s father’s body [in the coffin]? But wasn’t the body on the plane? Who was this person in the casket that he’s going to see?” And then the moment where Kate f—ing walks up from the car and you’re like, ”Wait — they knew each other before?” And then all of a sudden, it becomes f—ing clear, you’re like, ”Oh my God, that s—‘s insanely brilliant!” You can only do that in TV, though. You can’t do that in a feature. You know what I’m saying? Like, you get a moment like that in a feature like The Sixth Sense, where you’re like, ”Holy s—, he’s been dead the whole time!?” But to do two seasons and then suddenly throw a massive curveball is just so dramatically satisfying, you just take your hats off to the writers in a big, bad way.
Lost’s season three end was one of the most memorable TV finales of all time — We’re in definite agreement that February is just too far away. - Those interested in Superman, or specifically the story of Kevin’s experience writing a big screen Supes flick, can always check out the first “Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD where Kevin tells the famous story. Or, if you prefer text, it seems this new book on the way, lengthly-titled “Superman vs. Hollywood: How Fiendish Producers, Devious Directors, and Warring Writers Grounded an American Icon” will also cover the story, among other stories of the man of steel in Hollywood.
