  • Congratulations to Jay, Kevin, and “Clerks II”, who celebrated a big win at the MTV Movie Awards last night. Kevin and Jay (specifically Jay’s rants) were announced as the Orbitz “Dirtiest Mouth” winner and receive two special silver popcorn awards. The guys made a brief acceptance speech which seemed to throw off the Orbitz girl a bit, though once again made a fine showing among some tough competition. For those of you who voted online using our banner, thanks for helping out! Last night’s MTV Movie Awards show seemed like a disorganized mess, and wasn’t that entertaining at all, depite having some of the biggest talent in Hollywood in the audience. We did notice a brief shot of Kevin and Jen during the pre-show, and also got a brief mention in EW’s pop culture blog of the event.

Kevin On “Reaper”, Other Plans…

February 17th @ 12:34 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Movidude74

  • Kevin stopped by the board to give a quick reaction to the “Reaper” pilot news, revealed a familiar DP will be onboard, and also dropped HUGE NEWS that he’s writing not one, but TWO new films which he’s hoping to direct BACK TO BACK in late 2007 and early 2008. YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! Here’s Kevin:
Would’ve said something here first, but there wasn’t supposed to be something said at all yet, as my deal’s not closed.

But, yes – if t’s are dotted and i’s are crossed properly – I’m going to direct the pilot for “Reaper”. It’s less “Brimstone” or “Dead Like Me” (as some have suggested here) and more “Shaun of the Dead” than anything else. I’m trying get Trevor into the cast mix as well, and Baby Dave is gonna shoot it.

Why am I doing it? a) The script is funny, and b) I’ve always been curious about trying my hand at directing something I didn’t write. Never had an interest in doing that on the big screen, but “Reaper” presented an excellent opportunity to give it a go in a smaller (yet, ironically, far larger) pond.

The shoot runs about two weeks in March, so it’s not going to compromise my schedule too badly. I’m still in the midst of writing the next two flicks, which Mos and I are hoping to shoot back-to-back this fall and winter.

Kevin On “Manchild”…

November 15th @ 6:35 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin popped up at Myspace to make a lengthy post explaining how he got involved in Showtime’s pilot for Manchild and reveals, among other things, that the show will be quite different than its UK original. Here’s Kevin:
I am a “Manchild”

So it looks like I’m gonna be doing a TV pilot…

Hollywood Reporter “Manchild” story.

But, oddly enough, it’s not a show I’ve created; it’s a show I’ve simply been cast in. And, like anything in life, there’s a story behind it.

A few weeks back, Brent Morely – one of the agents at Endeavor – called to say “There’s this Showtime pilot I want to send you to take a look at, because I think you’d dig the sensibility.”

Every few months, scripts get sent my way from various studios looking for a rewrite or comedic punch-up, but I haven’t done one since “Coyote Ugly” – probably because, after all my work on that script, they hired a director who, naturally, wanted to bring his writer aboard the project, and almost all of my stuff got shit-canned. Generally, the scripts just sit on a pile near my desk for close to a year before they hit the trash – which isn’t a statement on the scripts themselves as much as as statement about my lack of interest in rewrite gigs.

When it hit the pile, the “Manchild” script caught my eye because a) the script was very slim, and b) the cover letter said nothing about rewriting. I was directed to read with an eye toward the role of “Paul”.

An acting gig? Were they kidding? I’m not an actor.

So while Jen was sitting on the bedroom couch reading a book with Harley, I sat on the other end of the couch and started leafing through the “Manchild” script, curious as to why anyone would think of me in conjunction with this show.

Then, I laughed. Out loud (or “LOL’ed” in the parlance of this medium).

Jen’s head immediately snapped up from the kid’s book and she stared at me, agog.

“Really?!” she asked, stupefied.
“It was a pretty funny line,” I explained.

Her reaction was based on the fact that I rarely laugh at anything on the page. Sure, I can split my sides at something like “Arrested Development” or the latest Carlin album (or “Borat”, I’m promised; I haven’t seen it yet); but when it comes to scripts, it’s rare that I react aloud at all (even at my own shit).

So I go back to reading, and within a few minutes, I laugh aloud again.

And again.

And again.

It was a truly funny script. And the part they’d earmarked for me to look at was a really funny character in a script full of funny stuff.

So I called Agent Brent back and said “I’d do this, sir. In a heartbeat.”

I met with the show creators, Robb and Mark Cullen (”Lucky” and “Heist”), as well as Darren Starr (show producer) and Stephen Gyllenhaal (show director and father of Jake) a few days later, found them all to be good guys, and suddenly, we were off and running.

We shoot the pilot in December, after I finish this other, two-day acting gig on a feature. If Showtime digs the pilot, we go to series two months or so after that. With twelve eps a season, it means I’m out of the directing game (which should please some folks) for only about four months out of the year.

I don’t know how Showtime will position the show (if they pick it up), but it’ll be a nice addition to their schedule alongside “Weeds”. It’s frank, crude, honest and funny: kinda like the flicks I do, if all the characters had high-paying jobs. While it’s based on the BBC show of the same name, from what I understand (never having seen the original), the Cullens kept the premise and title and re-built everything else. The original was compared to “Sex and the City”, so it makes sense that Darren is involved.

The only daunting aspect is that I’m surrounded by real, honest-to-goodness actors (James Purefoy, John Corbett, Paul Hipp). Thankfully, I got my first taste of acting beside real actors (the Silent Bob stuff barely counts) in “Catch & Release” (in theaters this January), so I’ve already got a bit of experience feeling inferior all the time (shit – I’ve got a lifetime of experience in that department, to be honest).

It should be an interesting exercise that, if the show works as well as the script, will turn into a sweet side-gig for me. At the very least, I’ll learn a thing or two about acting; at the most, I’ll have something to do four months out of every year, and be proud as punch to be involved with one really insightful and fucking funny show.

To say I never imagined something like this for myself is a gross understatement; this gig really, really comes out of the blue for me. But when someone hands you something as engaging and hysterical as the pilot for “Manchild” and says “We’d like you to be a part of it”… Jesus, saying no isn’t an option.

Hopefully, y’all will tune-in when (and if) we go on air.

We’ve got very high hopes for the series, as well as confident that Showtime, normally very good about giving shows like this a chance to find an audience, will pick this one up for 2007. We’re excited at the notion that Kevin will be a regular on an ongoing series, and of course will be watching this one unfold very closely. Being a big fan of “Weeds” and it’s delicate balance of comedy and drama, this one’s bound to be a winner and WOULD make an excellent companion piece as Kevin suggests.

More on “Manchild”…

  • We’re really stoked with the news that Kevin will headline his own Showtime series. The uncensored nature of Kevin on a cable network show, a fairly well-known British import at that, is exciting stuff. Entertainment Weekly reported the news this week in this slightly catty snippet (though the writer does admit with new shows like this, it’s getting tougher not to add Showtime to the cable lineup):
In other TV news, it’s getting harder to put off adding Showtime to your cable: Michael C. Hall’s Dexter has already been granted a Season 2, and now Variety reports that David Duchovny will start in an untitled drama pilot about a charming character named Hank Moody, “a novelist trying to raise a kid on his own while battling an addiction to sex and drugs.” (If only Charlie Sheen didn’t have Two and a Half Men…)

The premium cable network has also signed Kevin Smith to its pilot of the British import Manchild, a title I’d only heard of because it starred Buffy’s Anthony Stewart Head on the BBC. Smith will be joined in his make-believe midlife crisis by Sex and the City’s John Corbett and Rome’s James Purefoy. (This is where I second my editor’s first thoughts: “a) Can he act? There’s a reason he played a guy named Silent Bob, and b) Smith’s middle-aged enough to be facing a midlife crisis? Damn, we’re old.”)

We’re figuring once the guy sees “Catch and Release” he’ll see Kev’s potential. Anyway, the show does play quite a bit like a male version of “Sex and the City”. In the original, Kevin’s role of “Terry” (at least that’s what it was for the UK series) was the lead on the show. The program also starred Anthony Stewart Head of Buffy fame. You can check out the entire run of the British “Manchild” on DVD if you’re curious.

Kevin To Star In Showtime TV Pilot!

Director Kevin Smith acting in Showtime pilot

Director Kevin Smith and British actor James Purefoy have joined the cast of the Showtime comedy pilot “Manchild.”

The project, based on a BBC series, revolves around a group of fortysomething male friends (Smith, Purefoy,John Corbett, Paul Hipp) who are knee-deep in midlife crises.

Smith will play Paul, the cynic of the group, an angry divorced guy who loathes himself, his ex and his ex’s perfect new husband.

Purefoy will play Joe, the ad hoc leader of his circle of pals. He is attractive, polished, virile and wealthy, goes to the hottest new clubs and doesn’t date anyone over 25.

If “Manchild” goes to series, it will mark Smith’s first regular primetime gig. He executive produced ABC’s short-lived animated series “Clerks,” based on his critically acclaimed indie feature. Onscreen, Smith is best known as Silent Bob, a character he has played in most of his movies, most recently in “Clerks II.”

Purefoy stars as Mark Anthony on the HBO series “Rome,” which is wrapping production on its second and final season. His feature credits include “Vanity Fair,” “Resident Evil” and “A Knight’s Tale.”

This would be Kevin’s first regular role in any TV series at all, aside from guest spots — We’re guessing folks may have caught his scene-stealing stint in “Catch and Release” as well as his excellent crowd control in the “Evening With” series. Sounds like Kevin’s a natural for the role, and Showtime’s very generous with their series, giving them a chance to grow. So, we’re placing a big bet that we’ll be seeing Kevin regularly on Showtime next year! More news later.

Kevin “At The Movies” Two More Weeks!

  • Obviously a favorite for his honesty and likability, Kevin will return to co-host the popular “At The Movies” with Richard Roeper for the next TWO weekend editions of the program (starting with the weekend of Saturday, September 30th). The news first broke when Roeper ran down the list of next week’s films on the program this weekend, and mentioned that Kevin would be in to help review them. The flicks: “The Guardian”, “School for Scoundrels”, “The Queen” and “Open Season”. No word yet on the flicks for week two, though looking ahead, you can probably guess.

WSCH confirms the dates and for the more official, TV Guide also has the story. We’ll work on getting information, clips, and more up right here for ya following each episode, too. Check your local listings for date and time.

  • Last night, Kevin logged one of the most visible appearances during the Clerks II promotional tour, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. As always, audiences were rolling with laughter as he told the tale of the anal fissure, then a nice segue into Clerks II promotion, where the now famous Jay scene that you’ve seen in most trailers and ads is shown to the audience. The clip runs nine minutes in length, and we’ve got it available on our new News Askew YouTube channel. Enjoy!
