- On this Thanksgiving day, we like to reflect on all of our good fortune, through this site and our lives in general, and all we have to be thankful for.
Here at News Askew, we’re especially thankful today for you — The fans who visit us faithfully, whether you’re new to our world or some of our longtime fans from the beginning. We thank you for allowing us to continue serving you, and for your continued support and contributions.
We’re thankful to Kevin Smith and View Askew Productions, who have thrown unprecedented support behind our efforts and this website, and remain the #1 reason that you continue to read us every day. We not only enjoy being part of the family, but it’s through the generosity of Kevin and the company that make it all possible.
We’ve got so much more to be thankful today, and we think you may share in some of these sentiments – We’re thankful for our families, our friends, for the roof over our heads, the meals we’re looking forward to enjoying today, and the jobs which employ us and pay the bills in these tough economic times.
Even all the little things that make living in 2008 so great – That xbox live connection that allows you to connect and play games with your friends everywhere. The DVR that doesn’t miss any of our favorite shows even if our schedule dictates otherwise. There are so many things, big and small, that we are fortunate enough to have, and we need to remember that EVERY day, not just today — Though it’s always nice to come out and say it.
Thanks for everything.
What are you thankful for today?

- Live in Singapore and wanna see “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”? We have good news for you. One of their largest theater chains will begin showing it this Friday, November 28th.
They are using the “stick-figure” poster as an icon, but also use Seth’s and Elizabeth’s heads from the “banned” poster, adapting the stick figure phrase to “They made a movie so naughty we can only show their faces.” In Singapore, the film is rated R21 for “Sexual Content & Crude Humour”, but we hear that rating is quite common. No cuts were made from what we hear, so you should be seeing the same film we saw in the States, in all its raunchy glory. Enjoy!
- Our official congrats to Jason Lee, as People magazine confirms his marriage from over the summer. Lee has been keeping a very low profile with the press lately, which we’re totally down with, though we did want to certainly extend our belated congrats to him and his family.
Scoops Form Acting Up Again…
- With our scoops form acting up again, we’re now going to ask that any and all scoops (for now) come direct via your e-mail account to SCOOPS (AT) NEWSASKEW (DOT) COM. You know how to change the address to make it work (we just write it that way to keep the spam-bots away as much as possible).
In the meantime, we’re going to research a new scoop form method since the one we were using just decided to quit on us for no particular reason. If you sent a scoop via the form and never heard back from us, please drop us an e-mail direct so we can take a look at it. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank all of you for your continued support. A few new stories coming your way shortly as we prepare for the long Thanksgiving holiday weekend…
Heaps More Hi-Res From The “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” Premiere!
- Our pal professional photographer Albert Ortega found a few spare moments in his incredibly busy schedule to send us the remaining batch of his collection of high-resolution snaps from the Hollywood premiere of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”. While our first batch focused mostly on the Smith, Rogen, and Banks arrivals, these interesting shots show you a few of the other names who walked the red carpet to enjoy the film, along with the fantastic supporting cast. We love a lot of these shots as there’s coverage that normally doesn’t get seen on the major sites, as Albert is kind enough to send us everything, so we’re passing that on to you, for the most complete look at the red carpet for the film anywhere on the web.
Of course, there’s also more of the marquee stars as well, as we’ve got record numbers from this one, more than we’ve ever seen from a premiere before, as a matter of fact.
As always, our extreme thanks to Mr. Ortega for donating these high quality shots with us, and for taking the time to pass them on. Enjoy!

- The Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” wisely began picking up the brilliant “Clerks” animated series to air as part of the weekly animation block. Episodes are airing Fridays at 11 PM and repeating 2 days later, Sundays at 10 PM. All times EST so check your local listings. If you haven’t watched the episodes in a while, they play great on repeat viewings and are funny as ever. It’s such a shame we only got a handful as we think the premise could have continued forever. Re-live the dream on Cartoon Network every weekend.
- For those of you collecting all the variant covers of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman” series, a small change to note – Issue #2’s variant cover sketch edition will now feature art by Adam Kubert. Retailers still can only get ONE of these for every 50 standard copies, making them quite rare to snag.
- It appears that “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” stars Mewes and Morgan were at Tao Las Vegas last weekend performing hosting duties at the exclusive club and we missed it! One of your loyal webmasters was in town for a friend’s wedding and had no idea — So, we’ll have to live with this brief report.
- Let’s catch up with a few YouTube Askew bundles of joy today — First up, a dude called “That Fellow in the Coat” dedicates an entire episode to Jay & Silent Bob. Watch the guy devote an entire 7 minutes to a video essay on the duo’s exploits through cinema.
And just in case ya missed it, here’s Matt Damon giving his very candid thoughts on ex-VP candidate Sarah Palin.
- Scooper Garrett from Filmadelphia checks in with a brief report from the recent “Batman: Cacophony” signing at Stash East (the Stash nearest and dearest to our hearts). Take a peek at his brief report which includes a shot of the line and a few other random snaps of fans and the store’s interior.
- Finally today, a group of teens were arrested for smoking pot during a recent Seth Rogen film…And we’ll give ya a hint, it wasn’t “Pineapple Express”! See ya next time…
Sent a Scoop? Send it Again!
- If you sent a scoop to us using the scoops address or the scoops form last week, we might not have received it — We just became aware of some issues with the mail system that may have caused some of your scoops to go off into that e-mail black hole, never to be seen again (the same place those missing socks from your laundry dryer go). So, if you sent us something last week and never saw it posted or heard back from us, please do drop us a line with the scoop again, so we can be sure we heard from you. Also, it seems the scoop form is still problematic, so please send it direct to SCOOPS [AT] NEWSASKEW.COM (replace the AT of course, just trying to keep the spam down).
Thanks!
AICN Digs Kev & Walt’s “Batman”…
- When Kevin broke into the comics biz years ago, the industry changed forever, as he truly made waves, taking his screenwriting talents and adapting them to a medium that’s been in his life since he was a child. Now, along with his good friend Walt Flanagan’s amazing art to go with the words, the duo have created a new 3 book miniseries titled “Batman: Cacophony” and issue #1 has been out a few weeks now taking over sales charts everywhere. Don’t have a copy yet? Order one from the Stash before the first run is sold out.
Aint It Cool News posts a very positive review of the book this week as part of the “Pull List” feature, read on for some choice passages.“…Kevin brings his trademark humor to a story of murder, drugs, and intrigue. The best part of this book hands-down is Onomatopoeia, a superb villain who first debuted during Kevin’s GREEN ARROW run. It’s perfect that he brings him back for this story, but it also brings up a gripe I have with DC. This guy is phenomenal – why do you not put him in more books!?!? Out of the four baddies who appear in the first issue, the others being Joker, Zsasz, and Deadshot, Onomatopoeia steals the show once again.”
“…I have to commend Walt Flannagan and his artwork. Traditionally he’s been the guy that sells comics at the Secret Stash in Red Bank or Walt the Fanboy in Smith’s movies, but the guy actually has some very serious talent.”
“…BATMAN: CACOPHONY #1 was an amazing return of Kevin Smith to DC Comics. Smith handles Batman like a true pro and masterfully runs us through the issue. Flanagan is a much welcome addition to the comic book world and the two are truly a dynamic duo together (bad pun well intended). This is a comic I can’t wait to get my hands on, so hopefully the rest of the series will come out on time.”
Books 2 and 3 are written and drawn, so expect to see them in your hands in the next couple of months. Then it’s just a matter to see what comic project Kevin will take on next – Hopefully once again with Flanagan’s awesome art to go with it.
View Askew NewsBites™ – The Leftovers Edition Pt. I
- We’ll be checking out some newsbites old and new this week, as we clean out the mailboxes with some leftovers from the onslaught of “Zack and Miri” news — So, while some of these may date back a bit, it’ll be nice to have some different stuff to read up on, in case you missed some of these articles while we had the major promotional pushes happening…
- Jay Busbee’s sports blog mentions a familiar locale which we’re THINKING is likely a View Askew reference. Check out the last paragraph and see for yourself.
- Not only did the Affleck/Damon produced “Project Greenlight” horror flick “Feast” get a CRAZY direct to DVD sequel last month, the original also came to Region 2 DVD for the first time. If you haven’t seen “Feast 2” yet, it’s worth watching just for how ridiculous it pushes the envelope and basic horror conventions. Good fun, both flicks.
- Hey and while we’re name-dropping on Affleck, who we hear is doing some philanthropoc work in the Congo currently (good on ya, Ben) — A few stories we missed chatted up his joining the cast of the upcoming Mike Judge comedy
“Extract”. Lehigh Valley Live and Rope of Silicon both put Affleck front and center. He’ll join Jason Bateman and what’s looking to be a similarly talented, funny supporting cast along with him. One to watch for. - Kevin scores a couple mentions in reviews of that “Spaced” DVD set that Stash West held a signing event for – Like your friendly webmasters here, Kevin also supported this fantastic show, and we HIGHLY recommend renting or purchasing copies of the set, which includes every single episode ever filmed. A true bargain, and an essential part of any fanboy or fangirl’s DVD library. Check out Monsters and Critics and Film for two more reviews of the set (never ran before here at NA) which mention Kevin as well.
- That’ll put a close to today’s edition of leftovers, but we’ve got more where that came from – See ya next time with more of the ‘bites that have been hanging around the News Askew mailboxes. Happy Friday!
Commentary…
- Howdy, folks — Naturally, in these post-flick lulls, things get a bit quiet around here, so we’ll be using some of the extra time to upgrade the latest features of the site and work on some enhancements. We’ll of course keep you posted on the latest happenings in the world of Kevin Smith, View Askew, and everything else that’s been touched by it as well. We’re keeping on top of it all, just expecting things might calm down a bit now after one of our busiest couple months in site history.
So far, no new SModcast yet this week, but Kevin did assure us that the podcast will continue on a regular basis. Going through a flick’s release is a major drain, and we’re guessing Kevin, Scott, and their family and friends are all enjoying some much-needed rest after putting “Zack and Miri” in theaters.Speaking of which, I caught the flick again out in Las Vegas this past weekend, at the awesome Brenden theater in the Palms casino, and it plays great on a second watch — The gags are just as laugh-out-loud funny and it really allows you to catch some of those rare moments of both humor and drama that you might have missed the first time around — A few of the touching, more dramatic scenes with Rogen and Banks feature some real fine chemisty, and emotion that you just don’t typically see in a raunchy comedy. And man, is it ever raunchy! We recall Kevin’s joy in seeing “Clerks II” make it through with its R intact along with the donkey scene, this one easily outdoes that, and has to be one of the most visually and verbally raunchy R’s in quite some time, possibly ever. We love the fact it made it thru the ratings board, and can’t wait to see what’s in store on the DVD.
“Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is in theaters, and as new stuff rolls out every week, it may get harder to find, so we highly recommend catching it on the big screen again. And keep in mind, all your ticket stubs are good for a nice discount at Laser Blazer, so it’s like getting an extra gift along with a fun few hours at the movies. And hey, for those of you who walked out as soon as the credits kicked in (and shame on you if ya did), there’s even more reason to go back — You missed an awesome mid-credits scene. We hope you’ll catch the flick one more time, and continue to admire Kevin and View Askew for delivering the movies they want to make, pleasing the fans and breaking new ground every time they pick up their tools and go to work. Let’s hope it’s not long before “Red State” becomes a more tangible reality. We’ll of course keep ya posted.
