- Reports from last night’s Hartford Q&A session with Kevin are coming in, reporting a fantastic session full of great energy, questions, and lots of fun.
So far, two potentially major scoops broke as well. First up, Kevin revealed that a “Chasing Amy” documentary is currently in production for a future release — We can only assume this will be the new long-awaited DVD and Bluray release of the film’s 10+ anniversary edition, including the Arclight reuinion footage and Q&A and lots more. Of course we’re just speculating, but the fact that a documentary on the Askewniverse flick that many call their favorites is in the works can only mean good things. We’ll let ya know as details unfold. Also, some potential good news for “Red State”, still set to be the next movie that Kevin goes behind the camera with. Kevin and Scott have not forgotten the project and are continuing to seek funding for the low-budget flick. We’re going to cross our fingers and predict that we’ll have good news on that project in the next couple of months.
Were you there? Got a scoop? Wanna weigh in on your experiences? Drop us a scoop or post a Talkback comment.

- Industry sources are indicating some troubles for Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet” project, making it look like the Sony film won’t shoot at all this year. This is a real bummer of a story, considering the involvement of the great Stephen Chow had fans across the globe excited. So, let’s just say that the flick is on life support right now. If we hear more, we’ll let ya know. As you know, this project was dropped in Kevin’s lap at one point, and then drew renewed interest from us when “Zack & Miri” star Rogen came onboard.
- A popular blog dedicated to the addicting “World of Warcraft” PC game made a few View Askew references in the latest entry, citing the fact that killing 37 mobs in a row gives you a game achievement.
- Akimbo Comics mentions Kevin in the last panel of the web comic “Eat Sh@t and Die”. Yep, we got the title right. The well-drawn book cites the author’s past experiences with the females in his life.
Official Details On The Toronto SmithFest!
- You hopefully saw our big scoop on the Kevin Smith Film Festival in Toronto on February 8, 9 and 10, following his double nights of Q&As — We’re now happy to report that the event has been made official with this announcement over at the official company site.
Check that page for the full breakdown of dates and times. Kevin will indeed appear in person for a short Q&A following each film (which we assume will be kept on-topic for each movie). The bargain ticket here is still $60 which gets you into all SIX films over three nights. However, if you can only make one night or one show, you can get them for $15 in advance or $18 at the door. All of the advanced ticket sales are being handled by TicketWeb.Coolest of all, Malcolm Ingram kindly contacted us to confirm that you DO NOT need a membership to the Bloor Cinema as we previously reported. Though memberships were just $3, it was an extra hurdle that we can confirm you no longer have to worry about. So, feel free to buy tix online no matter where you are from, member or not — Be there in Toronto for a MAJOR 5 night affair with Kevin Smith and some of the funniest films ever made.

- Rotten Tomatoes looks at “Directors Who Made a Splash at Sundance” and lists Mr. Kevin Smith among the elite:
Kevin SmithThe world of indie film is full of outsized personalities, but few made a bigger splash on the scene than Kevin Smith. His debut, the micro-budgeted Clerks, was filmed at the convenience store where Smith toiled, and he captured the speech patterns and daily rhythms of over-educated, underemployed slackers with remarkable clarity. Smith picked up a Filmmakers Trophy for his effort — pretty impressive for a spiritedly profane black and white feature financed by maxing out his credit cards.
- Among all the other excitement in Toronto early next month (see stories above and after this), we forgot to remind you that Jason Mewes will ALSO be in town on February 5th hosting the F-U Awards, featuring local bands sponsored by 102.1 The Edge. With Mewes in town, we’re betting you might also see the Jay to Kev’s Silent Bob appearing at some Kevin’s live Q&A events that week. Toronto will definitely be THE place for View Askew fans to be in early February.
- Yet more press on the famous flying car today from scoopers, so we’ll run it here (we hope you’re not getting sick of reading this stuff) — Discovery Channel has pics and video of Randal’s dream invention come true! At some point we’ll have to back down on all the flying car news or risk becoming the flying car site over News Askew, though…
Kevin Smith Film Festival at Bloor Cinema in Toronto, Canada
- Kevin’s coming to Canada for a historic 2-night appearance in Toronto doing the Q&A thing next month (February 6th and 7th) — And even more curiously, mentioned that there might be more to come in a recent post. Well, we think we’ve gotten to the bottom of what that extra is gonna be. How about a mini-Vulgarthon?
Yes, that’s right, taking a look at the Bloor Cinema’s website , you’ll see a THREE DAY “Kevin Smith Film Fest”, showing 2 movies a night, starting Sunday, February 8th. “Clerks” and “Clerks II” on night one (the first double-bill of these we’ve ever seen), “Mallrats” and “Chasing Amy” on night two (films 2 and 3 of the Askewniverse), and “Dogma” and “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” on the final night.Okay, so we know you’re intrigued, right? Here’s the official word from the Bloor cinema:
KEVIN SMITH FEST. The honourary Jersey Canuck joins the Bloor Cinema for a series of half hour Q&A’s following screenings of six of his flicks!! Love him or hate him, Kevin Smith was one of the nineties’ most influential American auteurs, channeling pre-millennial slacker angst into comedies that are frequently more beautiful and loving than they have any right to be. We all have our favourites, but they are best appreciated as a package, the better to tease out their interconnectivity; just as with a good TV show, watching the mythology develop and weave back into itself is half the fun. SEE ‘EM ALL FOR ONLY $60.
Ticketweb has tickets for sale RIGHT NOW (and these are going to sell out really, really fast, so buy right now).

- “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” starts playing in the Netherlands tomorrow, and once again, the country is not disappointing in the promotions department — This time, a contest is being held to actually create your own “sexy adult video”. Talk about a distributor who knows how to go all the way when marketing a flick, huh? If you win, you get to make an actual adult video, directed by Monique Sluyter. Crazy stuff going on over there.
- And of course, don’t forget SModcast, which has been going strong with a DOUBLE episode treat this week. First off, number 73 in the series:
In which Buddy has a bad day and our heroes are beside themselves at the news… until the Quickening kicks in.
Quick Stop Entertainment is your only spot in the whole Internet world where you can nab the great SModcast, so get over there and get your copy in MP3 format. THEN, listen to the immediate BONUS SEQUEL, SModcast 73.5:
In which new ground is temporarily broken at the expense of sound quality.
Enjoy this double-shot of SModcast, with thanks to the guys for their continued weekly dose of audio entertainment! Catch ya back here soon…
AN EVENING WITH KEVIN SMITH at Roy Thomson Hall – Toronto, Canada
- The presale’s over, so if you missed out on the first round, you may now proceed to the Ticketmaster site to purchase your tickets to Kevin’s 2nd just-added night in Toronto for this February — The first event sold out in record time, so we’re expecting the same to happen on this one. Don’t delay, buy today.
The show takes place on Friday, February 6, 2009, 7:00 PM in Roy Thomson Hall, Toromto. Kevin’s Canadian appearances are among the all-time greats, so don’t miss out — This historic two night event is sure to go down in View Askew History as one of the greats. Some fans attending Saturday have been buying seats for Friday as well, now that tix have opened back up, which is fine, as no two Kevin shows are ever the same. In fact, his last Red Bank Show was a completely open forum that went in any direction Kevin would allow the audience to take it, no preset stories among the night. If this trend continues into February, we may very well see two totally different shows in Toronto. Here’s hoping to see many a News Askew fan among the crowd. Enjoy the show(s)!

FULL Details on the new “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” DVD/Bluray!
- Kevin was kind enough to share very specific details on all the goodies showing up when you pop those cherry “Zack and Miri” DVDs and Blurays into your players early next month. Check THIS out:
– 43 Deleted scenes (totaling 95 minutes)
– 22 Money Shots Webisodes (50 minutes)
– Feature-length documentary, Popcorn Porn: Watching Zack & Miri Make A Porno (75 minutes)
– Comic-con Panel 2008 (23 minutes)
– Gang-bang: Outtakes & Bloopers (13 minutes)
– Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes)
– Blu-ray only: BD Live—which will gives us the option of having downloadable bonus features at some time in the futureTotaling 4 hours and 21 minutes of bonus
Full disclosure: The extra feature – Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes) is only one of two parts. Due to Weinstein Co’s exclusive deal with Blockbuster, there’s a Blockbuster-Exclusive Extra Feature called “Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy Pt. 2.” So if you’re a BlockBuster cat, there’s that. I have no control over these things.
Here’s some general comments from Kevin in response to WWWBoard queries on the disc.
On a single vs. double disc DVD: “I was informed it couldn’t be one disc and have all the material we wanted on it – at least according to the folks at Weinstein Co./Genius Home Video.”
On the extras: “There’s well over an hour of extra footage. The doc itself is an hour. I don’t know what the “Money Shots” combined are, but it’s a bunch. Then there’s the flick, the San Diego ComiCon Q&A, behind-the-scenes featurettes. This DVD has, essentially, all the elements that all of our DVDs have had, except a commentary track and intros.”
See Kevin’s post for more details on his feelings on the lack of a commentary track this time around.
Finally, in his post Kevin also shared the absolutely fantastic Hong Kong poster for the film, which he would have loved as the Bluray DVD’s cover (but would have gotten sued over it). Check this work of art out.
“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” hits DVD and Bluray on Tuesday, February 3rd.
