ARCHERD: Ben Affleck Gears Up For Projects

By Army Archerd, Daily Variety Senior Columnist

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) – Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are phoning/faxing each other London-N.Y. deciding which roles each should play in their next,Castle Rock’s “Half Way House.”

It’s based on stories pals told ’em about a home for the mentally impaired. While the duo were at first going to play workers in the facility, Damon now tells Affleck he wants to play one of the retarded residents. Also set to star is Affleck’s brother Casey.

“It’s an ensemble piece,” says the Oscar-nominated (with Damon) writer, now in London for Wednesday night’s premiere of “Good Will Hunting. “I’m the only one here from the picture,” Affleck says. “Matt just wound ‘Rounders’ in N.Y.”

Affleck’s also in London acting in “Shakespeare in Love,” the Tom Stoppard screenplay based on Marc Lawrence’s original. Joseph Fiennes plays Shakespeare in the 16th century-set story also starring Geoffrey Rush and Affleck’s friend Gwyneth Paltrow. Yes it’s appropriately costumed for the period and Affleck boasts, “I have the greatest codpiece ever — it puts ‘Batman’ and ‘Robin’ to shame!”

His role: “the bombastic, raging, whoring, syphilitic actor, Ned Allyn.” Gwyneth plays Viola, who pretends to be a man (!) so she can be a member of the (all-male) acting troupe. Affleck says the period picture “mirrorspolitics of Hollywood today.”

In the next Affleck-Damon joint acting venture, “Like a Rock,” for Miramax, Affleck says, “I’m the romantic lead — and Matt is the supporting, like I was in ‘Good Will Hunting.”‘ Affleck is also set for Miramax’s “Dogma,” to shoot in Pittsburgh.

How does the young (25) Affleck judge which of the many offers to accept? “I gauge them when I read the script and say, ‘I wish I’d written that.”‘

He admits to being overwhelmed by the Oscar nomination (he’ll also present) and by the plethora of pix presented and the hefty work schedule. “But, I’ve known many a day in the (not so distant) past when I had nothing to do but go and look in the mailbox.”

  • We made this announcement a couple of months ago, but now that Entertainment Weekly’s done a piece on the series, we thought we’d restate it for those that missed it the last time. The new series “Significant Others” (from the Party of Five producers) stars Eion Bailey, of “A Better Place” fame , which just goes to show you Vincent’s got a pretty good eye for casting! The article unfortunately didn’t mention the flick, but we worked it in guy’s bio anyway. Hey, it’s important. Click here for the full story on the series. Hopefully it’ll take off…Couldn’t hurt ABP’s release changes by getting some exposure for one of the main actors!

  • More Dogma Casting…

    March 4th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

    George CarlinAlanis Morissette

  • Well, it’s been speculated for some time now, since Kevin mentioned talking with him a few times off and on, but it’s been verified for certain that George Carlin will indeed appear in Dogma, playing the part (we think) of Cardinal Glick.

NOTE : Yep, we’re aware of the Alanis as God rumors, and while they can’t be denied or proven (Kevin’s not talking!), they most likely stem from his post regarding talking to her when he was out on the west coast, and a crappy Chicago Howard Stern wannabe DJ rapping about it on the air. We still hope to have the official God announcement for you here, if it’s revealed.

  • Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha Gonna Do…

  • Alright, it’s got NOTHING to do with View Askew, but this is just one of those little tidbits we had to mention…You don’t wanna miss it. When we first heard about “Troops” about 6 months ago, we scoured the net and a bunch of bootleg sources looking for the tape. Finally, creator Kevin Rubio’s made this gem available online. For those of you unfamiliar, it’s a short parody of “Cops” featuring Stormtroopers (a la Star Wars) in the title roles. The mini-flick’s got HIGH production values (George Lucas wouldbe PROUD) and is loaded with laughs. If you’re a Star Wars OR a Cops fan, or just like a good laugh, it’s definitely worth your download time. Get the files here:
