Kevin Smith’s Green Arrow Still On

When you’re faced with the year ending in two weeks, you can’t help but remember cool comics projects that were once mentioned to debut sometime during the past year. One of the biggest buzz projects this past summer was Kevin Smith’s upcoming stint as the regular writer on Green Arrow. According to the gossip mill, the axed series was going to start up once again, with Smith as writer, and star Ollie Queen as Green Arrow, with his son Conner possibly along as a sidekick.

Originally, the project was supposed to start by the end of ’98.

No, we haven’t seen it either, but don’t worry. Green Arrow editor Darren Vincenzo says that Smith is still chomping at the bit to tell the stories of the Emerald Archer. “Actually, Kevin and I just exchanged e-mails this week, and he told me that he’s still alive and well, and it is still his desire to helm Green Arrow,” Vincenzo says. “Currently, we’re trying to work out a schedule for him to get his initial materials in, and those will get us our approvals and get the book up off the ground.”

And as for a debut? “We had hoped that everything would be in the works by the end of the year, but due to his schedule with Dogma and Daredevil, he didn’t quite have the time,” Vincenzo says. “Right now, we’re looking at getting the project in the development stage in early ’99. By my best estimate, that would get the book out – whatever format it will be in – by mid to late ’99.”

“Trust me – his desire to come on Green Arrow is as strong as it ever was,” Vincenzo concludes. “It’ll be coming along in time.”

If the book’s anything close to as good as the Daredevil series, we’re in for a treat.

Hey Harry it’s Otis again, sorry that I gave away too much about “Jawbreaker,” but it was my first time submitting. I’ll try to be more aloof about the movie I saw today the View Askew produced “Big Helium Dog.” So I got to work and wasn’t really looking forward to being there, but then the fed ex guy showed up with a copy of the movie for us because a member of the band I work for (a pretty famous rockstar) has a small role in it. So we decided to take a break from work and watch the movie and it was hilarious. It was not so much a straight ahead movie as it was more of a bunch of different comedy skits loosely strung together. The simple plot involved the main character Charlie who’s friend winds up committing suicide when he finds out that his girlfriend was cheating on him. And then Charlie winds up making the Devil the coolest man in the world, so to get his friend into heaven he must make the devil uncool. I do have to admit that this movie was offensive to almost everyone from homeless people to the elderly, but that’s what made it so funny it didn’t hold back at all. The couple of us at the office were dying, when you guys finally see this there was a scene involving Charlie and his Grandparents and the clapper that was awesome. For a low budget movie it also had a bunch of great people in it including Kevin Smith, Michael Ian Black (from Viva Variety), and another surprise actor which we were told not to tell anybody about but trust me everyone knows who he is. I hope that this movies offensive nature doesn’t hold it back from getting into festivals because it is really worth seeing.

We’ll keep out eyes peeled for more news now that the film’s more in the open, and hopefully have our own review of the picture sometime soon!

Alright, back to the rat race that is the Christmas shopping season. ‘Til next time…

• Kevin says to expect the Mallrats Special Edition DVD/Laserdisc sometime in MARCH or APRIL.
• Jay revealed that he has a fiance and is thus getting married sometime in the near future.
• Kevin will attempt to cut Dogma down to a 2:10 – 2:15 running time, just by editing out bits of dialogue, but not any complete scenes or total sequences.
• Dogma will be submitted to Cannes in March with hopes that it will premiere there in May.
