- Earlier today, Joey Q got back to us with word on DD#7’s status, so we wanted to update you ASAP. The book will NOT be out tomorrow, as we feared. He also stated that It will be leaving Marvel the week of June 4th or June 10th, but that this means nothing since issue 6 took six weeks to be printed from the time it left Marvel! Yikes! Anyway, we’ll keep ya posted on when to expect the next book, but it’s gonna be a while. Many of you also wrote in to confirm this, so thanks!

Another Dogma Review…
- Yet another Dogma review rolls in courtesy of AICN. This is actually a bit different due to it being from a female perspective, which we believe is the first. There’s definitely a mixed perspective here, though overall she definitely seemed to enjoy the film.

Commentary…
- We’ll spare you the long, detailed Star Wars: TPM review that so many siteops are throwing out there and just say this: The movie was fantastic, and totally worth the wait. Critics be damned. The flick delivered what was expected of it, and was a lot of fun to boot. ‘Nuff said. Now, on with the show:
Clerks Screens In Detroit…
- We usually don’t devote a full story to a mere Clerks screening, but this one really sounds like it was a good time! Not only did the theater draw a nice crowd, but the sucker had a full bar AND a table of folks playing our Clerks Drinking Game! We hear lots of rowdiness ensued, and there was the obligatory line reciting, but still, a fine time was had by all:
There is a theater in downtown Detroit called the State Theater…Concerts.. movies etc… So they have this thing during the summer called ‘Monday Night at the Movies”..
Last night they kicked off the ’99 season with ‘Clerks’.. Attendence was pretty good for it being so early in the season ( at least 200-250 people).. Kinda cool to sit in a nice theater.. with full bar.. enjoying a movie that you love so much.
This was my first time to see it on the big screen and it was fantastic. By the time the ‘Hockey game’ was taking place.. about 3/4 of the crowd was half lit and I actually found a table with people playing the ‘Drinks-askew’ version for Clerks.. Complete with printout…
Overall.. I had a great time and I can’t wait till later in the season cause they listed both ‘Rats’ and ‘Amy’ as movies for later in the year..
Kev Heads To France…
- As we mentioned, Kevin & crew hopped the flight to France yesterday, where they’ll give Dogma its official debut at the prestigious Cannes film festival this Friday night. His parting words:

Have to say, though: the response to the flick has been overwhelmingly positive. Nevertheless, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for Friday (I mean, ‘Rats’ had an overwhelmingly positive response prior to its press screenings too).
By the end of Cannes, we should know who’s releasing the flick (right now, the front-runner’s an unlikely but appropriate choice).
This is what we’ve been working all these years toward. The dream was always to return to Cannes with ‘Dogma’, and so far, so good.
But you get older and dreams change. Now I predominantly dream about a healthy, baby girl.
Hmmm…Who could that mysterious front-runner for release be? We’ll know soon enough, we guess. Anyone got the inside track?
Comics Tomorrow?
- We’ll be honest. We’re kinda worried. The countdowns at the top of this page show Oni Double #12 AND DareDevil #7 hitting shelves tomorrow, but we’ve yet to hear a peep from Joe & Jimmy at Marvel on DD. Joe Nozemack from Oni HAS confirmed, though, that Oni Double #12 WILL be out there as scheduled. Great news!
As a rule of thumb, keep in mind that the release dates we’ve got DO reflect the last we were told, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the books are on track. The lack of advanced buzz on the preview copies also seems to suggest that DD#7 may NOT see a release tomorrow. At any rate, hopefully we’re wrong, but if not, don’t shoot the messenger!
We’re gonna drop some e-mails out there and try to get confirmation on DareDevil. Hopefully we can at least have a new release date if it’s delayed.

- We’re going to TRY and rush through today’s update, since we’re lucky enough to have the Star Wars Trilogy on the new 5.1 Dolby Digital laserdiscs and are planning to spend the rest of today watching them, in turn, on the home theater…So let’s get started:

- Lots of small Dogma mentions floating around the news today. First of all, Roger Ebert gives a shout out to Dogma in his web column today:
Weinstein’s top priority at this year’s Cannes festival, he said, is a successful launch for “Dogma,” the controversial Kevin Smith film that has been criticized for possibly being offensive to the Catholic Church. It plays here Friday.
“People who have seen it say it gave them a real spiritual experience,” Weinstein said, “That’s not what it’s about, but still . . . ”
Is it true that Disney, Miramax’s parent company, objected to the film?
“Not anymore,” he said, “because I bought it. I’m releasing it personally. Disney isn’t involved.”

- Next, we’ve got gossip guru Liz Smith chatting about Salma Hayek’s popularity at the festival:
SALMA HAYEK, in Cannes for “Dogma,” stunned her handlers with her impact on the paparazzi last week. Hayek, who will also appear at the big American Foundation for AIDS Research benefit Thursday at Cannes, was mobbed big time. At least 200 photographers converged on the actress, separating her from her press people. This caused a bit of hysteria when it seemed she might vanish forever in the madding crowd! One shell-shocked Cannes veteran remarked, “never seen the like . . . only Elizabeth Taylor ever generated this kind of insanity.” (Taylor herself arrives any second in the South of France. She presides over the annual AmFAR event.)
Hayek, a great beauty, seemed to be loving every moment. She stood up in her car, waving, posing and pouting like a ’50s movie queen. Her boyfriend, actor Edward Atherton, tagged behind the star with his video camera, recording for posterity his beloved’s effect on the world press at the world’s most famous film festival.
- Seems that Kevin took the time to stop by the Phantom Menace line outside the Ziegfield Theatre in NY and gave a quick interview. Turns out the theater has quite a page devoted to their Star Wars frenzy, complete with live webcams of the line, fan profiles, and lots more! The interview hasn’t been posted yet, but you should be able to find it at the above page. For now, here’s a snippet:
I just returned from interviewing Kevin Smith in front of the Ziegfeld where the NYLine is up. Questions ranged from what he thought of TPM, to how Star Wars influences his films, to his new film “Dogma.” He was extremely laid back and hung around with the line for awhile. He was interviewed by the BBC as well as by some other network. He signed all sorts of Star Wars paraphinalia and then quietly slipped out. The interview should be on NYLine TV by Thursday!
- Desert Blue‘s trailer aired on today’s edition of Coming Attractions on the E! Channel. Askewer Ethan Suplee is featured in the flick and in many parts of the trailer, but doesn’t get billing at the end (though Casey Affleck‘s does).
- Finally today, Kevin gets a mention, alongside a TON of other great directors, as one of the “Young Turks” at Cannes in a New York Times article by Janet Maslin. You can read the full article (or subscribe to the Times online FREE) HERE.

More From Cannes, & A Review…
Today at the American Pavilion, Hollywod Reporter and Kodak sponsored “A Conversation with Harvey Weinstein and Roger Ebert.” The hour-long conversation brought up many interesting topics, but no DOGMA. So during the Q&A, yours truly asked Harvey to talk about the film and its current status. He basically said that a lot of the controversy was coming from people who didn’t even see the film, and the film will prove itself this week when it screens. A reporter from ET then asked him to talk more about it, so he just commented that the film has screened for “the people” and it’s getting great feedback and positive responses. He ended by saying that for him, it’s an honor to be able to “go along for the ride” with filmmakers like Kevin and Tarantino as they “paint their unique pictures.”
We’d also like to take this time to thank “The K-Man” very much for being a great source for us from Cannes! He’s the guy that’s been checking in with all the latest Dogma-related stuff over the past week, and we appreciated it! Unfortunately, he’s heading home now and will miss the screening and aftermath, but hopefully someone’ll pick up where he left off.
Also, another scooper who saw the flick in New York checks in with a review – This person didn’t like Dogma at all, and wasn’t shy at all to say what he didn’t like! There have been MANY different reactions to the film, from total love and admiration, to disappointment. Also, some folks seem to be singling our certain actors as the greatest, with others calling those same people the worst in the film. Anyway, give the review a read and decide for yourself.

Dogma Screening: A Clarification…
- Seems like something we said got blown waaaay out of proportion, and we want to clarify: A story posted a few days ago mentioned another Dogma screening on May 17th – But if you look at the headline, you’ll see it was “News From CANNES”…Meaning, the screening WAS to take place in Cannes, not anywhere stateside. Also, we just heard that the screening was cancelled regardless. So, it looks like Dogma will first hit screens in France only this Friday, May 21st, as planned.
By the way, Kevin & crew left for Cannes today, so wish them luck! The film’s sure to be the talk of the festival after it plays.
