Kev’s Kansas (Emporia) Appearance Summary: Bill Murray In VA5?

  • Kevin’s appearances over the past couple years have all followed a similiar pattern: The guy always shows up and talks as long as he possibly can (usually until the event staff make him stop), he always brings along a tape of something (this time, the final Clerks cartoon episode), he always takes the time for autographs and photos. Also, since he does them all over the country, new attendees usually ask similar questions, and we hear a lot of the same stories. We ALSO usually get a couple of new tidbits, too, and last night’s appearance at Emporia State University in Kansas was no exception.

Thanks to all our scoopers above who sent in summaries of the appearance. They were all pretty much the same, so we’re summing them all up with this one below. In short, the major revelation is that Kevin expressed interest in working with Bill Murray, who just happens to be “not ready for prime time” (an ex-Saturday Night Live cast member) as he alluded to in an earlier post. Could he big one of the big talents appearing in VA5? Also, View Askew 5 is up to its SEVENTH draft. Here’s more:

1. Kevin started about 8:05 and they kicked him off a little aftermidnight. He wasn’t ready to end yet, and they gave him time enough atthat point to show us the last episode of Clerks: TCS and answer a fewmore questions before retreating out to the lobby area for autographs/photos/etc.

2. It was VERY funny…almost all Q&A, and people seemed pretty intoit. The theatre was relativley packed…there were some empty seats in thebalcony…but, in my opinion, anyway, it was prety well-attended.

3. Kevin was interested in the election, primarly, he said, because TheMan takes 51% of his pay check and he was hoping for some lowertaxes. He said he wasn’t particularly for either Bush or Gore, and hedidn’t vote…mainly b/c he was in LA for VA5 instead of his registeredstate of NJ.

Shortly after the show started, some dude in the front row got on the cellwith his Mommy to get an update on the election numbers. He then askedKevin if he wanted to talk to his Mom. Kevin did, and it was prettyhysterical.

The ESU activites group (which, by the way…seemed to bedoing a GREAT job keeping shit rollin’) contiunally fed Kevin electoralcollege numbers so he could update everyone. At one point, Kevin’s cellphone rang. After he answered, he said, “I’m going to count to three thenI want you to repeat what you just said to me…1, 2, 3…” Kevin put thephone up to the mic and we hear something like, “Hi, this is so-and-sofrom the California Democratic Party and I just wanted to see if you had achange to vote today…” Kevin explained that he didn’t, any why, and thegirl pressed him with questions like, “If you DID live in California andyou HAD voted, would you have voted for Gore?” After a bit of this, Kevinjust said, “FUCK NO.” Then, again, he says, “wait, wait…I’m going tocount to three and you repeat that…” And when she does…it’s his wife,Jennifer. She prank called the joint. Heh. I dunno if it was staged ornot, but it was pretty damn funny.

4. The typical things were discussed: Superman, Clerks: TCS, what’s upwith Fletch, getting hate mail durring Dogma, etc, etc. All stories weredamn funny. The auidience seemed into it the whole way thru, Ithought. Some things I hadn’t heard were WAY too much info about a pornvideo Mewes and his new Fiance made and showed Kevin, how he landed thedeal with Psycomic, and a few others. Oh, and someone asked, “As adirector, what would you have changed about Mewes’ porn video?” Kevin wenton to explain that you need to really “get the camera in there,” “getgraphic,” and give us more than one angle. Quite funny shit.

5. No real news from the show, although I did ask Kevin if Mohr would bein VA5 and he gave a resounding “No.” Too bad. Someone later asked ifthere were any actors Kevin really wanted to work with and Kev quicklyresponded with Bill Murray. Hmm…HE’S not quite ready for prime time…

He also mentiond that he digs Billy Bob Thorton’s work, but said that hedidn’t really see himself working with him.

6. Someone did it. Some fucker asked, “What’s a nubian?” Dude,c’mon. Grr. Oh well. Kevin layed into him with, “here we are, three and ahalf hours into the show, and I thought we were finally going to make itthru a show without some dude asking the same thing that someone asksevery fucking time I do one of these things…”

7. Kevin made his fair share of Kansas jokes (although he did promiseupfront not to mention the Wizard of Oz, which drew much applause), but Idon’t think anyone was offended because we’re all pretty much sick ofKansas, too. Plus, the dude’s from Jersey. What can he really say? 🙂

We also heard he mentioned News Askew and gave the site a great plug…Thanks, Kevin! Other revelations included the fact that VA5’s road trip plot featured a stop in Kansas (since he asked the audience to send in photos so they can get a feel for what the area looks like), and a reassurance that he feels Jason Lee is the PERFECT young Fletch. That about sums up this one. Thanks again to all the scoopers listed above for sending in their excellent summaries!

  • As those of you who attended Vulgarthon or read the updates know, Vincent Pereira cleaned up “A Better Place” with new scenes, a new print, and brand new sound mix. To accompany this, he also teamed up with Gig Records to put together a CD soundtrack for the film, which will be available sometime next month. Vincent hooked us up with an advanced copy of the new CD, so we spun it up and gave it a listen.

There’s something to be said for the new mix: It’s damn good. The movie’s got a David Lynchian feel to it now, with a very dark and moody score permeating throughout. The ABP soundtrack features all of the score along with a ton of original tracks from Michael Ferentino, Mikael Jorgensen, Amazing Meet Project, Auto vs. Pedestrian and more. Many of these tracks now appear in the film, 2 are ONLY available on the soundtrack. Dialogue clips from the film are also interwoven in between the tracks for a true View Askew soundtrack feel.

But why take our word for it? Take a listen to the MP3 clips above yourself. We think you’ll dig what you hear. We’ll also have more info on this CD and full details when you can purchase your own copy. Thanks again to Vincent for giving us an early listen to this excellent new disc.

  • Naturally the election here in the US still remains big news with the race so close that an official recount isn’t scheduled to finish until sometime tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a few exclusive shots of Ben Affleck out on Al Gore’s campaign trail in the wee hours of the morning before yesterday’s polls opened. Our scooper (who also provided the photos) says:

His speech was very lucid, and he referred to George W. Bush as George II (aclear reference to George III, the king of England in power when Americadeclared its independence. Reading Howard Zinn again?)

He also delivered a speech from an absent Cameron Diaz.

Appearing on stage with Ben were Glenn Close, Billy Dee Williams, RobertDeNiro (who said he was sent by Harvey Weinstein himself), Stevie Wonder,Jon Bon Jovi, and of course, Al Gore.

  • We have now confirmed the Dogma DVD for JANUARY 23, 2001. It’s official, folks! Yeah! Just a little over 2 months away. The date that the discount sites on the web have, 1 week sooner, is the shipment date, but NOT the street date of the disc.
  • Mallrats will be airing on the FX network this Thursday, Nov. 9, at 12:00 noon. No idea if this will be the very funny and censored ABC version, but if it is, it’s worth watching alone just to hear the voice they dubbed Jay’s profanities over with.
  • Speaking of TV airings, “Dogma” will be shown on Starz! at the following times:
Saturday, 11/11, 8PM
Wednesday, 11/15, 9:35PM
Tuesday, 11/21, 8PM
Sunday, 11/26, 10:05PM
Monday, 12/4, 8PM
Friday, 12/8, 12MID

In addition, the premiere on 11/11 will be followed by the Matt Damon film “Rounders” (a decent flick) at 10:15. The airing on 12/8 will be preceded by “Chasing Amy” at 10:05. In January, “Dogma” is likely to begin airing on the sister channel of Starz!, Encore.

  • Finally today, want some details on Jason Lee‘s upcoming starring role alongside Tom Cruise? Page Six recently leaked a story on the flick, which has been shrouded in secrecy as all Cameron Crowe films have, and it sounds fairly interesting. Here’s the story, yet we warn it may contain a few spoilers. “Vanilla Sky” is rumored to be a remake of a Spanish film called “Open Your Eyes”, and even sounds like it’s got a few elements of that flick “Shattered” from about 10 years ago (remember that one?).
