- There’s a new article from Cinemanow.com about the production of DOGMA and it offers a fair bit of insight into stuff like casting and so forth. Check it out HERE.
- DOGMA will make it’s German DVD debut on January 23. We don’t know if this is the full-fledge special edition we’re going to see in the States, but our source tells us that 30 minutes of interviews with Kevin Smith, Linda Fiorentino and Salma Hayek will be included.
- Kevin makes a short appearance in THIS STAR WARS FILM currently playing on AtomFilms.com.
- Australian fans can catch all 6 episodes of Clerks: The Cartoon starting every morning starting December 14th at 5 am on Network Seven!

J&SBSB Logo Contest Update!
- You folks really are amazing…We’ve got around 100 or so entries for the logo contest, and there really have been some slick, creative, brilliant designs. It’s going to be a TOUGH decision, that’s for sure. We’re still accepting entries for those of you working on them, and probably will for at least another week or so. Also, if you have revisions to your designs, or want to enter again, feel free. Thanks again to all of you who took the time to make a submission so far. We never expected this big of a turnout and it’s truly amazing. Keep ‘em coming!
Psycomic: “Saturday”…
- The Psycomic column continues to break new grounds and take us inside the stuff you never get to hear about in Hollywood. This week, Kev details events leading up to a meet and greet with David Duchovny, as well as details on what happened with Kate Hudson.
The meeting came suddenly. His agent called our casting mistress – having heard I was in town, doing the rounds – and said that David wanted to meet. Not necessarily to be in the movie, as he was doing an Ivan Reitman flick during the time we were to be shooting Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. He just wanted to meet for the hell of it. They also sent over the episode of the Files he’d directed last season called “Hollywood A.D.”, so that I could familiarize myself with his directorial efforts. It was unnecessary, as I’d not only already seen that episode when it aired (in fact, I’d watched it with great interest, due to the fact that an article in Entertainment Weekly made it sound like there were some minor plot similarities to what I was doing in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), but also his directorial debut on the show the year before (the great baseball episode with Jesse Martin; he of Law & Order fame). I’m up – way up – on the Duchovny oeuvre.

News From Kev’s Academy Lecture!
- Many of you were kind enough to send in your detailed reviews of Kevin’s appearance at the Academy on Thursday. There’s also an extensive report over at Aint It Cool News. Kevin was forced to do a pretty short session due to their time constraints, but still stuck around for autographs and photos afterwards, as always! One of the coolest items from the event is that Joey Lauren Adams was seen in attendance. Could this mean she’s got a future with VA5? Let’s hope so. Many folks sent it reports, so here’s a summary:
- Scott Mosier, Monica Hampton, John Pierson, and Joey Lauren Adams were in attendance.
- Kevin started with Harley on stage and also introduced his wife Jennifer.
- The Q&A was set for 8-10, went to 10:30, when Kevin then signed autographs for fans.
- They will be in Los Angeles for 8 months making Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
- Casting for extras will be announced in a month or so.
- Most of the usual stories were told, including the famous Superman Lives anecdote.
- Fletch Won is on the back of the slate now as J&SBSB is taking precedence. They may use Chevy Chase for a voiceover but haven’t given the flick much more thought than that. Jason Lee is still the favorite to play Fletch.
That’s about it, really, nothing new but all in attendance said that it was another fantastic appearance and that a fine time was had by all. We’ll likely have some shots from the event soon.
Dogma DVD Edits?
- This post from Vincent Pereira at Mobius’s Home Video Forum sheds light on an interesting edit we might see on the Dogma Special Edition DVD commentary and documentary:
You’d be surprisedwhat sort of legal hurdles you have to go through to include certain supplements on DVDs- when you guys see the DOGMA S.E. next month, you’ll seewhat I mean. We had to do some editing to the commentary and documentary due to a clause in the Miramax/Disney-sale-to-Lion’s Gate-contract that none of us had any clue about when we recorded said commentary and videotaped the interviews for the documentary – you’ll all see what I mean when the DVD comes out, and I think you’ll get a kick out of how we went about honoring the contract while keeping the jist of the commentary/documentary intact.”
Sounds like they did what they had to for legal reasons, but in a funny way, and we’ll still get the effect of what they were trying to explain. Should be fun.
Is “Clerks: Sell Out” Next After J&SBSB?
- Many of you wrote in after catching the new page at the excellent Upcoming Movies website regarding Kevin’s next project (following “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”). As those of you recall, when Vulgarthon took place in October, Kev DID mention in one of the Q&A sessions that an animated Clerks cartoon would be the next View Askew project to hit theaters after this one, NOT the Fletch movie as we’d expected before. Now, keep in mind nothing’s been inked on this yet, and we’ll be watching it closely. All we DO know is that Miramax was excited at the idea and that the plan was to release an R-rated, animated film featuring Dante and Randal making a black & white movie about their Quick Stop/RST lives (so, in effect, making “Clerks”). It’s an interesting prospect, but one just in the planning phases so far. If you’d like to see what Upcoming Movies has up, check them out HERE. So, in short, we DID mention this in our Vulgarthon coverage, but some of you may have missed it.

- Wizard World has posted confirmation that Kev and Jay will indeed appear at Wizard World in Chicago – August 17-19, 2001. We’ve added this information to the countdowns now.
- Here’s an excerpt from an article that appeared at EW.com. In it, Kevin discussed the comic book elements of “Unbreakable”:
According to well known ink and paint devotee (and ”Dogma” director) KevinSmith, an affection for the genre informs the film’s somber, rainwashedaesthetic. ”It reminds me a lot of a comic book called ‘The Mage,”’ saysSmith, speaking from the set of his latest offering, ”Jay and Silent BobStrike Back.” That semi- obscure comic follows ”a wizard who convinces aregular guy to try and find out if he’s a superhero, and it’s also set inPhilly.” What’s more, several pundits — including New York Times filmcritic Elvis Mitchell — have mentioned the visual similarities between thesecurity guard hero (Bruce Willis) on patrol in his poncho and a DC Comicscharacter known as ”the Spectre.”
- Live in Atlanta? Wanna see Clerks and Dogma on the big screen, for free? They’ll be playing at the Echo Lounge in Atlanta on Monday, December 18th, at 8 PM. We’re not positive on the free thing, but our scooper speculates that there won’t be a charge…So get in line early!
- The Clerks animated series is getting an airing in Australia on the Seven Network at 5:10am (yikes, set the VCR!)Airings start on the 13th of December. We have no idea if they have the rights to air all 6 or just the 2 that aired stateside.
- Aint-It-Cool-News has posted a positive review of BREAKERS, the new flick with JASON LEE, Gene Hackman, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Read it HERE.
- Loaded, a national and widely-read “lads” magazine here in England ranked none other than Rats’ Claire Forlani at number 31 in their “Hot 100” – the list of attractive women to watch in the coming year. She beat out luminaries along the lines of Charisma Carpenter (Buffy, Angel), Virginie Ledoyen (The Beach) and Anna Kournikova (Uh…Tennis) to get there.

- Thanks to ALL of you for the entries in our name the View Askew 5 title page contest. By far with all the talkbacks and emails, we had over 500 titles suggested, so you all came through with flying colors. You did not disappoint! Thanks to each and every one of you who entered.
After careful consideration, we’ve got a winner — John Lovegrove came up with the title of “SCOOPING THE MONKEY” and it sounds just perfect. It’s simple, takes a cue from the excellent “Developing The Monkey” column at Psycomic, thus, “Scooping The Monkey”, or STM for short, will be how we refer to the new page. Congrats again to John who will be sent a brand new Chasing Amy DVD for his excellent suggestion.
The new page’s full title will read “View Askew 5: Scooping The Monkey”.

The “Design Our New VA5 Page Logo” Contest!
- Alright, we’ve got a title. Now comes the REALLY tough part. We’ve always been the first to admit that we plain SUCK at graphics design, so yet again we’re putting a call in to the News Askew readers with some graphics talent to undertake the design of the logo for our new Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back page.
The rules? The image must fit nicely as the title of a page. It doesn’t need to follow any strict height or width requirements, mind you, but it SHOULD be wider than taller. Look at the main News Askew logo for an idea, but again, no strict dimension requirements. Those of you who take a stab at this probably know what we mean anyway.
Next rule: The new site will have a BLACK background, so the graphic must project well on top of solid black. ‘Nuff said there.
Finally: The graphic MUST incorporate the following text: “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back: Scooping The Monkey”. Break it up however you want, with the first part at the top, “Scooping The Monkey” at the bottom, whatever. Hey, if you are just creative with text, you can make the logo out of text entirely without any pictures. Just give it a shot!
That’s about it, really. Include any colors, graphics, and embellishments that you want, so long as you follow the requirements above, and you’re good. When you’ve got a masterpiece you’re happy with, send it along to SCOOPS@NEWSASKEW.COM. We’ll pool all the entires and choose our favorite or, if we get a TON, maybe hold a vote to let you choose your favorite.
The winner of the best logo contest will get a brand new, sealed Chasing Amy DVD as well as a rare sealed Mallrats DIVX disc. Again, no deadline on this one, but we’ll give you some time, since we know this graphics design stuff ain’t easy. Good luck!
Clerks Cartoon DVD Cover & Details!
- Check it out, folks! What we’ve got here for ya is a scan of the ad running in the new Video Business magazine for the Clerks cartoon DVD! We’re pretty sure this represents what the final cover to the disc will look like…The prices you see in bold are the prices the dealers pay for the units though, which explains why they’re so low…Retail on the DVD will be $29.99 and $19.99 on the VHS. The DVD bonuses will be: Animatics, Audio Commentary, Character Development Feature, “The Clerks Style” Feature, the Superbowl TV spot, and more. DVD-ROM owners will get access to Storyboards and screenplays from the episodes. Very, very cool! Don’t forget Kev & Jason intro each and every episode as Jay & Silent Bob!
