- Thanks to Yahoo! News and Rolling Stone, we’ve got a COMPLETE track listing (not including the dialogue snippets) of all the tunes on the new soundtrack, along with this article headlining with the Bloodhound Gang. Take a look:
Bloodhound Gang Strike Back
Yet another eclectic summer soundtrack looms, this time for director Kevin Smith’s forthcoming flick, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The compilation, due August 14th, mixes previously unreleased tracks from Stroke 9, the Bloodhound Gang, Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner, Bon Jovi, Morris Day and the Time and Steppenwolf.
The Bloodhound Gang’s contribution to Jay and Silent Bob, a track called “Jackass,” was previously tabbed for two other soundtracks this year. The number was originally written for the aborted soundtrack to MTV’s Jackass. It was then slated for inclusion on, then dropped from, the imminent American Pie II album before finding a home on Jay and Silent Bob.
The collection’s first single will be Stroke 9’s “Kick Some Ass,” with a video to be shot by Gregory Dark (Linkin Park, Crazy Town). Said track will also appear on Stroke 9’s forthcoming fourth album, due this fall. The album was recorded in Northern California earlier this year with producer Jerry Harrison, who also handled the band’s 1999 breakthrough Nasty Little Thoughts. >{?Pirner’s contribution, “Tube of Wonderful,” is an instrumental that initially appeared in the opening credits to Smith’s 1997 film, Chasing Amy, but because no soundtrack for the film was ever released, it remained unavailable.
The film, which will arrive in theaters on August 24th, is the final feature set in actor/director Smith’s so-called “View Askewniverse,” the others being Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma.

- This snippet popped up in a Chicago Tribune story by Mark Caro on the ratings system. The headline reads “‘F’ for Failure: NC-17 Doesn’t Work”:
Kevin Smith, whose debut film “Clerks” was initially rated NC-17 for its foul language before the ruling was overturned on appeal, suggested: “What they ought to do is get rid of the NC-17 and just call it R-Plus, because R is a rating (moviegoers) are familiar with, and they can sleep well at night. NC-17 to them is `We’re heading into ancient Roman times and utter debauchery, and we’re going to bring civilization down around our knees.”’
- Tracy Morgan was on a very funny radio talk show “The Radio Chick” with Leslie Gold on 102.7 WNEW (same station as Opie and Anthony). He didn’t give any info that we haven’t heard already, but did give a plug to the ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ flick, and gave props “to his man, Kev!” He was promoting his comedy show at Caroline’s in Manhattan this weekend.
- The latest issue of Toyfare Magazine promotes “Twisted Toyfare Theater, Collectors Edition” as “The Trade Paperback You Must Have!”. Kevin apparently writes an introduction for this book. Watch for it. It hits shelves in August.

Trailer: Final Mix Happening NOW…
- Kevin just reported that the trailer is going through a final sound mix as we speak, and thus will not be ready until around MIDNIGHT PACIFIC TIME, meaning about 3:00 AM here on the East Coast. Alas, that’s a bit too late for either of us to wait up with, but we’ll have a mirror up here bright and early if all goes well (maybe sooner). At any rate, go get some sleep (or wait up and look for the trailer on View Askew or the Poopshoot site). We’ll see ya with that trailer right here tomorrow morning.
News From Kevin On Trailer, Soundtrack, & More!
- Kevin checked in last night in the wee hours to post a HUGE update including confirmation on the trailer’s arrival TONIGHT (it’ll be right here, folks, so watch for it), the J&SBSB soundtrack (shaping up quite well), and lots more. Read on and check for a few comments from us afterwards:
Trailer Update/Soundtrack(s) Update/General Update
So the trailer’s now locked. It’s about a minute and nine seconds. Fun stuff.
Phil and Vordo are mixing it tomorrow morning, Phil will compress it in the afternoon, and Ming will show up at night to hurl it into the cyber void so ya’ll can download it at 9pm pacific/12am eastern. Remember to download the latest version of Quicktime beforehand.
On Soundtrack(s): Universal’s doing the soundtrack, which is kind of poetic, as they also put out the ‘Rats’ CD (let’s hope both the soundtrack and the flick itself fare better in the marketplace than poor l’il ‘Rats’). It comes out two weeks before the flick, and it’s packed with some great songs by Stroke 9, Afroman, Morris Day and the Time, Marcy Playground, PJ Harvey, Bloodhound Gang, Bon Jovi, and a host of others. We’re even getting a chance to sort of right a past wrong, by putting Dave Pirner’s ‘Tube of Wonderful’ (the title theme of ‘Amy’, also heard in ‘Jay and Silent Bob’) on the disc.And yesterday I pulled a slew of dialogue clips for interludes between the tracks.
It’s also going to be an enhanced CD – which means there’s some video on it as well (for those of you with CDRom capability). Look for the first ‘net trailer on the disc, as well as a for-the-soundtrack-only video of ‘Jay’s Chant 2001′, comprised of a bunch of footage from the flick.
As if that’s all not enough, I’ve heard there’s going to be a movie cash coupon included in the CD for a few bucks off the price of admission to the flick (five bucks off, I believe – but don’t quote me).
Before I sound any more like a Universal Records pitch-man, I’m going to stop talking about the ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ soundtrack…
…and START talking about the ‘Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back’ SCORE Soundtrack. That’s right: this flick’s so big, there’s not just one soundtrack, but TWO! The Score Soundtrack is all of Jim Venable’s music for the flick (which you’ve heard in the first ‘net trailer, and will hear more of in the second ‘net trailer tomorrow night). Ink’s not dry on the deal, but it’s being put out by a very reputable score soundtrack label (other than Universal). Congrats to Jim, and us too.
In other news…
E! ran a story about the flick yesterday. Brad and Chris might have it up at Newsaskew later in the week.
The two videos we’re shooting in Jersey next week are for the Stroke 9 song ‘Kick Some Ass’ and the Afroman song ‘Because I Got High’. I’m not directing either (Greg Dark and Cousin Mike are the respective directors), but Jay and I are in both. Hopefully, they’ll start airing in late July.
We’ve started initial talks about an interesting distribution outlet for the ill-fated ‘Dogma’ DVD documentary. It’s farther down the road, but it’ll be pretty sweet if it works out.

One final note: in the thread below, some folks gave me props for being good to the fans by putting out ‘net trailers. Trust me – it’s my pleasure. They’re really fun to cut, and gratifying to share with you.

Wow, so that’s not one but TWO soundtracks! That’s fantastic. Let’s hope that deal to get the score CD out comes to fruition. And the news of the cool artists AND dialogue clips on the disc is most welcome, as well as the possibility of the movie cash being inside. Should help to sell some soundtracks AND movie tickets on top of it all. Very, very cool.
Bad news on the E! news footage – Due to confusion about which day it was airing, we missed capturing it. If anyone’s got it on cassette (or by some chance anyone from E! is reading this), we’d love a copy of the piece to place online in the Scooping The Monkey archives.

Dogma SE Starts Shipping…No RCE!
- We’re receiving reports from all over the country about the Dogma SE shipping and even arriving early in their homes. Sounds like Columbia/Tristar got these suckers out to the retail outlets in plenty of time, so expect to see a TON on your local DVD shop’s shelves next week. Many online retailers have shipped to customers already, and some stores have even put the SE on shelves and broke the street date.
The other news that’s come from this is that the disc is NOT RCE encoded, meaning those of you overseas who ordered the disc CAN indeed play it in your region-free players, no matter what. After receiving so many conflicting reports on this, the best course in the end was just to wait for the final product. We’ve now received confirmation that RCE was not used on the disc at all.

For those of you that have been following the series, you’ve gotta be anticipating the start of this one! - It’s here! That soon-to-be-famous clip from the Dogma DVD of Kevin and Jay blatantly plugging the Stash in Red Bank, NJ is now online. It’s a fun little commercial, that ya just can’t watch without smiling. Check it out first-hand right HERE! We’ll likely add this commercial to the summaries or elsewhere for all to see in the future, in case they miss this news, so be sure to refer others to it in the future.
- A Chasing Amy DVD release in Australia? It could happen! This cryptic news of an August 8, 2001 release for the disc was found on www.dvd.net.au under the “Coming Soon” tab. They claim the disc will be released by a company called “Shock Records”, though their site has no info. We’re not sure if this is a mistake or not, but those of you in Australia without region 1 DVD players may be in luck! Stay tuned.
- Here’s some more multimedia for ya today – A very brief Kevin mention on yesterday’s Howard Stern radio show. As fans know, Stern does a news segment featuring audio press clips for the last hour or so of every show, but rarely lets them play all of the way through. HERE’S what happened when Robin attempted to plug Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
- Ben Affleck & Matt Damon have both been named part of People Magazine’s Top 50 Bachelors. You can check out the writeups and the entire list HERE.
- We’re receiving some reports from Dark Horizons and Laker Jim’s Fletch page (as well as a report we lost that came in the other day, sorry, scooper) that Miramax have purchased the domain www.fletchwonthemovie.com. We looked into it and it looks like they’ve had a hold of this one for years now, so we figure it was just done as a precaution IF the movie does get made. Don’t consider that a guarantee, though. Studios often purchase domains for films only in the planning stages, which go unused when the films aren’t made. We’ll keep ya posted on that one. With Kevin’s statement that his next project might not be what we expected, it doesn’t sound like Fletch is right around the corner, though.
- Stoke 9 mentioned the soundtrack and the new flick in an update of their online diary. Check it out if you’re so inclined. Nothing much new that hasn’t been said here already, but the band definitely seem excited about having their song in the film.
- Finally today, the Dogma SE reviews continue to come in, so much that we might hafta stop mentioning them all. This latest one, from DVD IN Detail, lauds the DVD itself but doesn’t seem to thrilled with the extras. Check out that review HERE.
