Kevin To Host “Heroes” Auction, Dinner…

  • Here’s another really cool event and opportunity, folks. For $250, you can buy a plate at an exclusive dinner being held in New York City by Marvel comics. Kevin will host the event, an auction of exclusive one-of-a-kind original artwork from Marvel’s “Heroes” book. ALL proceeds go to victims of the World Trade Center. Drawing Flies DVD Release Soon!

  • Big news for those of you waiting to finally get your chance to check out this rarely-seen View Askew Production, Malcolm Ingram’s “Drawing Flies”, starring Jason Lee (with a supporting cast full of Askew regulars, including Mewes in his first non-Jay role). The DVD release may actually happen on the SAME DAY as Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, that’s right, February 26, 2002! The folks at IndieDVD are working feverishly to get things ready, and have been kind enough to allow us to debut this cover for the disc, plus in the coming weeks we’ll have some of the other scrapped cover art ideas, extras info, and even information on a VHS release. Stay tuned, more Flies news on the way!

Kevin Receives Spirit Of Liberty Award…

  • The People for the American Way Foundation’s Spirit of Liberty Awards in took place in Beverly Hills on Monday night, and Billboard.com ran an article on the event, featuring this quote from Kevin:
…But it was the words of “Mallrats” director Kevin Smith that kept things in perspective.

“Somewhere in Afghanistan there is a U.S. soldier getting shrapnel pulled out of his ass going, ‘Yeah, that ‘Clerks’ guy is a ‘defender of democracy,’” Smith said. “So I’m going to rename this award to ‘defender of my own ass.’”

A News Askew reader was at the event in person, and sent in this summary for us:

Kevin recieved the “Defender of Democracy” award for utilizing his first amendment rights (and especially his controversial work on Dogma). Kev was introduced by Miramax exec Harvey Weinstien, who praised Kevin for his amazing work and also for introducing the world to Affleck and Damon, who have made Weinstien a pretty wealthy guy. Kevin then came out and renamed the award the “Defender of my own ass award”, stating that he never really defended democracy, but only his work. He then went on to read a piece of hate mail he recieved from Dogma (noting spelling errors and gramatical innaccuracies), and went on to tell a few anecdotes about the whole Dogma experience, including one story of how he, Jen and Bryan Johnson (of Steve-Dave fame) protested the opening of Dogma in Red Bank, NJ, he touched upon this story on the technical commentary of Dogma, but he really went in depth here. Right before leaving the stage, Kevin stated that it was ironic that Weinstien was here to present him an award for defending democracy when Miramax dropped Dogma, “The irony here is not lost on me”. He then went back to his seat and soon after left, leaving my Daredevil #1 book unautographed (but hey, no hard feelings, Kev):) It was overall a great night, Smith of course being the highlight of the evening and just being in the same room with the man is an experience in itself.

Again, congratulations to Kevin on this very prestigious award. Well done!

  • This report comes in from a daytime TV viewer:
Jason Lee got a brief but positive mention today on the Rosie O’Donnell show. She had Tom Cruise on, and she mentioned that “the guy” in the movie (Vanilla Sky) was great. Cruise then said it was Jason Lee, but when asked what else he’s been in, he only mentioned Almost Famous, and the fact that he used to be a pro skater. No mention of Kevin’s movies at all.

The Lansing State Journal’s review of the film also has the best things to say about Lee’s performance. Open Your Eyes was good, so Vanilla Sky is definitely worth your time this weekend (before the incredibly cool Lord of the Rings hits next week).

  • Reelbuff.com is currently running a survey where you can choose your favorite Kevin Smith film.
  • Every year, KROQ Radio in Los Angeles puts out an annual X-mas album and this year, track 13 is called “Silent Bob’s Christmas Memory.” Of course, he says nothing, but DJs Kevin & Bean thank Smith and Smith wishes them a merry Christmas. You can listen to the track HERE. If you’re in the LA area, you can pick up the whole CD for just 5 bucks.
  • And finally today, will Mewes be vising the Creek sometime soon? This answer comes from a question posed at the official Dawson’s Creek website:
BRODIE BRUCE: Hey there Jason just a quick question is the character “Oliver Chirchick” based on Kevin Smith? I know JVDB worked with him on Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and you mentioned “Skee-Ball” on the desktops which is a theme throughout Kevin’s movies… am I completely off track here?

JASON: Hello Brodie Bruce. Although lots of us here are Kevin Smith fans, the character of Oliver Chirchick is not based upon him at all. If anything, he is based on our own resident imp, Jon Kasdan. The skee-ball reference is purely coincidental. But for all you other Kevin Smith fans, I have heard rumors recently of a possible appearance by Jason Mewes (Jay) on the Creek. I’ll keep you posted.
