“Evening With Kevin Smith” Promotions!
- Sony has provided some “exclusive” content to Video ETA to promote the upcoming “Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD. If you go to their site (http://www.videoeta.com), you’ll see a pop-up window which will link ya to the DVD site, which features some clips and a whole lot more!
The text from the promotion reads as follows: “This winter, Kevin Smith (well, a cardboard cut-out of the man) is traveling all over the U.S. to promote his new DVD – “An Evening With Kevin Smith.” During his travels, he’s taken time to pose for photos with fans and decided to post some of them to the DVD Website for everyone to see. Each week, we’ll select one candid moment with “Cardboard Kevin” to be featured as the Photo of the Week.”
So, it sounds like an ongoing deal of sorts. Check it out, and of course pick up that DVD everywhere a week from Tuesday!

- Wireimage again proves they’ve got the BEST celeb pics with two new Jersey Girl series, one featuring Affleck and Raquel, another with Affleck and Lopez. You can check out all the mini thumbnails HERE, but ya gotta pay to see ‘em blown up to full size. Enjoy.
- This small “Now You Know” blurb appears in the New York Daily News:
- Affleck as Fletch? Chevy talking more smack on Kevin? Say it ain’t so! This Canoe article on Chevy Chase said the following:
“We talked but then he never called back. I can’t fathom such behaviour,” says Chase of Smith, whose films include Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma.
Harvey Weinstein, head of Miramax Films, also approached Chase about a Fletch film.
“Harvey wants Ben Affleck to play Fletch. First he suggested I play a minor character, but I said that was impossible because I was too identified with the character. Then Harvey suggested Ben play someone like my son and I’d be his mentor. I liked that idea, but nothing ever came of it.”
We assume Chevy got Affleck & Lee mixed up…or did he!?!??
- Actual moving footage from the “Jen Saves Ben” videogame aired on “Good Morning America” yesterday. Interestingly enough, they said the game is going to be released to the public, we’re not sure if they will be posting it on the net, selling it, or if it was just misinformation. We’ll keep ya posted.
- Diamond has posted a few more tidbits on the upcoming View Askew “Inaction Figures”. Don’t these things just look cooler and cooler each time you see ‘em? The first series is set to ship this February, so save up some of that Christmas money.
- The Jason Mewes flick “RSVP” has been spotted in some video stores for rental in Australia. Blockbuster stores aren’t stocking it but people in Melbourne could try a joint called “Video Busters”.
- Congrats to the “Drop Dead Roses” team, who just won “Best Comedy” at the Hollywood Underground Film Festival in San Francisco.
- One lucky UK Askewbian will win a free “Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD. Visit the UK Askew website for details.
- Finally today, it’s WAY down on the page, but if you do a “Find”, you’ll see a Clerks-inspired “If You Plan To Shoplift, Please Let Us Know” sticker for sale.
Kevin On Board For “Scary Movie 3”!
- Here’s some huge, unexpected news! Last week, we reported that View Askew alum Brian Lynch will be co-writing Scary Movie 3 — Now, it’s gotten even MORE interesting. Kevin Smith himself has joined the writing team, and will also executive produce! Yahoo News has the story:
By Justin Oppelaar
NEW YORK (Variety) – Dimension Films continues to stack the masthead for “Scary Movie 3” with comedy heavyweights, signing Kevin Smith (news) — a veteran at Dimension and parent Miramax — to executive produce and co-write the project.
Smith, whose writing and directing credits include “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy” and upcoming Ben Affleck (news)-Jennifer Lopez (news) pic “Jersey Girl,” joins slapstick trailblazer David Zucker (news) (”Airplane!,” “The Naked Gun”), who has agreed to direct.
“It is an honor to be involved with David, one of the creators of ‘Airplane!,’ which is arguably the funniest movie of all time,” Smith said. “Our aim is to make this third in the franchise as funny as that other hysterical third-in-the-franchise flick, ‘The Godfather Part III.”‘
The new addition steps up the rivalry between Dimension and Sony-based Revolution Studios, where “Scary Movie” originators Keenen Ivory, Shawn and Marlon Wayans (news) are developing their own spoof project based on the sci-fi/fantasy genre.
Both films are expected to be out next year, but Dimension chief Bob Weinstein has vowed to be first to market with an early fall release. “Scary Movie 3” is set to begin shooting in February.
For writing duties, Smith joins scribes Pat Proft, Brian Lynch and Craig Mazin, who signed on to craft the script in November.
With such a great group of folks involved, this flick’s gonna be one to watch for. We’ll keep you posted on all the latest developments.

- In case you haven’t been watching our countdown ticker, you may not know that “An Evening With Kevin Smith” is due out on DVD in a couple of weeks. We’re hoping to have an advanced review up for ya soon, but in the meantime, here’s what the IMDB ran today regarding the disc:
Controversial director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back) says that his real “bread and butter” comes from appearing on the college lecture circuit. His remarks during question-and-answer sessions at colleges have proved so provocative that several of his lectures are due to be released on DVD on Dec. 17 under the title An Evening With Kevin Smith (Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment). In an interview with Video Store magazine, Smith said that after a recent showing of Chasing Amy, “a guy came up to me after it was all over and said, ‘The movie’s fine, but the Q&A is brilliant.’”
- What happens when comedian Steve Belanger spends a day as an extra on the set of Jersey Girl? Well, he creates a parody film to celebrate the day! The short, called “Chasing Kevin” (not to be confused with the Scott Kramer short of the same name that’s been around a few years) can be viewed in Quicktime at his official site. Keep in mind, though, it’s a HUGE download (20+ megs) and it may take a while depending on the amount of News Askew traffic.
- More multimedia: It’s hard to find online these days, so if you’ve yet to see the “Build Me Up, Buttercup” video from Mallrats (featuring Jay & Silent Bob), you can watch it HERE. Keep in mind, the video’s in MUCH better quality on the Mallrats Special Edition DVD.
- Australia’s Empire Magazine has named ViewAskew.com as one of its Six sites of the month, and also celebrates Holden’s famously improvised “It’s Your Birthday” dance in Chasing Amy as one of their Top Six Dances in film.

- The Jen Saves Ben videogame continues to make the news. This one comes from the Washigton Post:
How do you thank America’s hottest new couple for starring in your movie? Director Kevin Smith is giving newly engaged Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck a custom-made video game to show his appreciation for their being in his recently completed film, “Jersey Girl.”
According to the New York Post, the game “Jen Saves Ben” features an animated Lopez, trying to find and rescue Affleck, who has been kidnapped and chained to a warehouse wall.
“J. Lo has to get him back but doesn’t know where he’s gone,” said Brad Graeber of Texas-based Powerhouse Animation Studios, which created the game. As she karate-kicks along, Lopez encounters an animated, ray-gun-toting Smith as well as Matt Damon, cast as an evil robot. She gets three tries to save her fiance without being killed, and if she succeeds, the couple kiss. The game plays a soundtrack of, big surprise, Lopez’s music.
- R.S.V.P. international release news: First up, the DVD in Australia — Nov 6th was the official launch date but that may have been the window to sell to video stores with shipment later as we haven’t heard anyone finding it yet. No idea of what features are on the disc, but the director did make available some deleted scenes and a documentary hosted by Jay and actor Daniel Joseph. Let us know if ya spot it! RSVP should also hit the DVD shelves in the UK in late January of next year, and Germany some time in the spring, completely redubbed into German — Jay Mewes speaking German. Should be a trip. Stay tuned.
- And it seems we have one of these every single year…

- Congrats to the team behind the “Clerks: Uncensored” DVD — It took 3rd place in the “Best DVD – TV Series Presentation” category over at TheDigitalBits.com’s Bitsy Awards.
- The Asbury Park Press ran a nice article this weekend on John Kenneth Muir’s “An Askew View” book. You can now buy the book through the Stash, or online and at bookstores everywhere.
- We’re receiving a lot of reports on that new Australia DVD box set of Clerks and Chasing Amy on DVD. The discs are the exact same as their US counterparts. All that’s needed down under now are decent editions of Dogma and Rats!
- And finally today — Affleck’s been joked about as having a big head before, but this is just ridiculous! Catch ya next time.
