  • Well, we’ve gone and hit another milestone again — They’re coming faster and faster these days, and we’re damn proud of that. Thanks again to everyone for your continued amazing support, we love doing News Askew — The fact that so many of you keep coming back and have been faithful readers for so many years is the reason that this job brings us so much joy. We’ve got the absolute greatest bunch of readers out there, and View Askew fans have become known as some of the classiest (and most loyal, as those of you who heard Kevin discussing his internet “peeps” during the IFC show last night). We thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for coming here to read and contribute on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. This place continues to be by and for the fans, and it’ll always be that way as long as we’re here.

Congrats to BRIAN HILL for hitting the big milestone. ELEVEN MILLION HITS. We’re checking around for a nifty prize to send him, after all, it’s not every day we celebrate another million hits at this place. Thanks again, to any of you who represented even a single hit of our last million — We’ll be looking forward to the next one!

  • This online cartoon database turns out to have quite a nice little section on the Clerks Animated Series. There’s episode summaries, cast listings, and more. Might be something cool we’ll lift for the summaries that we’re currently working on revamping.
  • Looks like Cafe Press got the rights to sell Buddy Christ merchandise …at least we HOPE they did…If not, we think View Askew gonna SUE somebody!
  • Another one of those Meetup things is happening, this one’s for fans of Kevin’s — The website is http://kevinsmith.meetup.com. Meetup creates real-world group gatherings about anything anywhere (i.e. Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck). They’ve built a technology and a network of venues (cafes, bars, etc.) that can help any interest group easily organize local monthly meetups in over 540 cities across 31 countries.
  • The new issue (February 4) of the Advocate features a quote from Kevin on the “Rants & Raves” page-it’s his line about “Chasing Amy” being a science-fiction movie from “An Evening with…”.
  • Check out this little Flash animated Silent Bob that a fan created over at Newgrounds.

  • Word on these signed photos up for auction came to us from Jay himself, so we can only assume they’re legit — Surf on over and get your very own SIGNED AND PERSONALIZED Jay Mewes 8×10 Glossy at Yahoo Auctions!
  • And in other Mewes news, here’s details on what looks to be that next film he was talking about. It’s called “Game Night”. It will be filmed in Nashville, TN and is an extreme example of what can go wrong in a game of “Truth or Dare”. Lots of details (and casting info for your budding actors/actresses out there) can be found at the official site right HERE.
  • This MadBlast article cites the author’s opinions on Ben Affleck’s 10 best films — Chasing Amy ties with Good Will Hunting for top honors.
  • Sounds like a very interesting turn for Jason Lee in his next role. This comes to us from zap2it.com :
Jason Lee Turns from Nice Guy to Stalker in Next Film

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Zap2it.com) — Jason Lee’s next film “I Love Your Work” is a complete 180-degree turnaround from the affable character, Paul he plays in “A Guy Thing” — the MGM movie opening this weekend.

“I Love Your Work” is written and directed by “A Beautiful Mind” actor Adam Goldberg and co-stars Giovanni Ribisi (”The Gift”) and has Lee stalking his favorite celebrity actor (Ribisi). The film is also starring Franka Potente, Christina Ricci, Joshua Jackson and Elvis Costello as himself.

“It’s very well-written and twisted. I play the ultra-neat guy with the hair and the jacket — very creep,” says Lee.

A former pro skateboarder, Lee enjoys working on an independent film budget of one million dollars again.

“It has that high-energy thing of trying to get it done and be creative about it and you don’t have as many luxuries. Things are less driven on a bigger movie cause things are easier — unless you have a big studio telling you ‘do this,’ ” the actor says.

Lee is researching the role by reading pages from books about stalkers put together by Goldberg.

“I’ve been reading through that and it’s really interesting reading about Mark David Chapman and stalking celebrities and stuff,” Lee says. “I don’t work with an acting coach—directors are good with that stuff if they’re good. Lee Harvey Oswald bought a brand new suit the day he killed [John F.] Kennedy, he flew to New York but chickened out and flew back home the first time.”

  • Jason Lee’s “A Guy Thing” took in $2.37 million on Friday, on track to make around $7 million for the weekend.
  • Don’t forget, Kevin and the Daredevil cast on DINNER FOR FIVE tomorrow night, IFC!!! Don’t miss it!

Vulgarthon L.A. Is Likely…

January 17th @ 9:41 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Sean Keely

  • The weekly column at Bikkit.com features a blurb regarding the author’s run-in with Kevin at the DVD Premiere Awards:
Dejected, I returned to the back of the stage to see what else I could do. As if it was meant to be, Kevin and I crossed paths again. Like the band girl determined to ask out the football star, there was no stopping me this time. I caught him while practicing his speech to introduce the Weinsteins for a special award. I mentioned my hometown and its proximity to his, he mentioned how he used to ice skate there. That, my friends, is called building repoire.

Spending all of my time up until this point too worried about my “in”, I didn’t have a second question ready. Thinking back to a rumor I had heard the other day about Vulgarthon in L.A., I asked about its validity. He confirmed that it was a pretty good possibility and that with all the requests he gets for it, it’s probably going to happen.

We’re sure this has fans split down the middle, but we can understand an L.A. thon for sure. First off, a whole new fanbase will finally have the chance to attend one of these things without breaking the bank on a plane ticket. And we’re sure that Red Bank will never be forgotten, and that fans here will have another chance to get together again soon as well. We east-coasters can’t take ALL the fun now, can we? But keep in mind, nothing is certain yet, this is all just talk, and we will of course immediately let you know when anything becomes official. With the next thon still almost a year off, we figure there’s still plenty of time to decide — Maybe they’ll even go bi-coastal with it next time.

  • We’d like to offer our congratulations to Jason Lee, who announced his engagement earlier this week at the premiere of “A Guy Thing”. IMDB reports:
Almost Famous star Jason Lee used the Hollywood premiere of his latest film A Guy Thing on Tuesday night to announce his engagement to actress Beth Riesgraf. The actor, who divorced first wife Carmen Lee last year, is wasting no time in heading down the aisle again – the couple are planning to wed later this year. A delighted Lee told reporters he knew Riesgraf was the girl of his dreams on their first date. He explains, “The day we met we took a road trip up to Big Sur in California – we had a five-day-long first date.”
  • More Lee news: Jason made a brief phone appearence on the Bob & Tom show yesterday. They discussed his new movie “A Guy Thing”, and also talked a bit about Kevin (at one point, one of the hosts asked Jason “So, do you ever get tired of Kevin Smith calling you telling you how good he is?” Jason’s response was “I never get tired of him calling to tell me he has another movie for me”).
  • A new promotional photo has been released from “Jersey Girl”, featuring Affleck and Lopez. The pic has already appeared on Dark Horizons, JoBlo, and Latino Review, and other sites. This is now the official summary Miramax is using for the film’s plotline:
Ollie Trinke (BEN AFFLECK) is young and at the top of his game as a music promoter. He is both a workaholic and a silver-tongued expert at manipulating the press. At a company Christmas party, Ollie meets Gertrude Steiney (JENNIFER LOPEZ), a book editor for a New York publishing house. They are instantly attracted to each other, and begin a whirlwind romance that changes the course of his personal and professional life.

Be sure to check out our entire photo gallery from the film over at Exit 37.

  • This sounds like a BLAST! In Belfast, Northern Ireland, Waterfront Hall’s film club, for one night only will be showing Blazing Saddles and Clerks on the big screen, in a bar-type environment (smoking and drinking encouraged!). Click HERE for details. Anyone got any plane tickets to Ireland lying around?
  • ‘Clerks’ is the midnight movie this weekend at the Inwood Theatre in Dallas, Texas. It will show Friday and Saturday nights at 12:15 AM.
  • A very small reference to Kevin’s DVD commentary tracks was made in the first frame of this online comic called “Hatchetman”.
  • Jason Mewes made a brief appearance over at the WWWBoard, confirming to fans that yes, he is STILL with us. Of interest, Jay said: “I got a new movie in the works, just keep your eyes open.”.
  • And finally, to kick off the weekend, here’s a bizarre link for ya. Something tells us that Affleck may be steering clear of Lawton for a while…

“A Guy Thing” Review & More Lee…

January 15th @ 10:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Belinda Barber

  • A scooper got an early look at Jason Lee’s upcoming “A Guy Thing” and seemed to like it. Here’s her review:
Hey! Got to see A Guy Thing in a sneak preview last nite & I’m still all giddy from it.

I enjoyed it & laughed more than I did during Stealing Harvard.

In the scheme of Lee flicks, on a scale of 1-10 (Stealing Harvard being a 1, Amy or Almost Famous a 10) I’d give it a 6. In the grand scheme of moviedom I’d give it a 5. He’s done better, he’s done worse.

It’s in there w/Kissing a Fool or American Cuisine w/less kissing.

It’s a comedy chick flick, yet surprisingly w/a few gross outs for the guys, but w/gags that have been done many times before.

Lotsa Jason, Selma was underused, Julia was a cutie & I would’ve gladly offered to scratch that itch he had.

I must say though that the audience in the theatre was laughing like crazy (a little over the top laughter for my tastes but hey, they liked it & there were critics there too) & on the way out people were talking about his performance & how much they enjoyed it & him.

I think there could’ve been better choices in flicks to put him in good standing w/Harvey Weinstein but it’s way better than Stealing Harvard.

I wasn’t disappointed @ all.

Catch Lee on TV in these upcoming appearances:

  • Friday, January 17th, The Early Show – 7:00 AM.
  • Hot Tix (this weekend) – a syndicated movie review show w/Leonard Maltin, check the local listings for that one.
  • Behind the Scenes: A Guy Thing – Airing on E! Thurs. Jan 16th. 6:30PM, Additional Airings Friday, 24 2:00 PM, Saturday, 25 7:00 AM, Sunday, 26 3:00 AM, Sunday, 26 7:30 AM, Monday, 27 3:30 AM.

Here’s hoping that “A Guy Thing” does good, as any good Lee box office should make it a lot easier to convince the folks at Miramax that Lee’s the man to head up “Fletch Won” with Kevin.

  • Today’s most popular scoop: Shannon Elizabeth was interviewed at ESPN.COM today. Of the 10 questions, #6 is what we thought you’d like to see:
6. What is your favorite role so far?

Elizabeth: It’s a toss-up between “Jay and Silent Bob” and “Thirteen Ghosts,” actually.

  • Liv Tyler was Maxim’s Girlfriend of the Day yesterday. She mentions Kevin and the “Jersey Girl” shoot in the piece.
  • Dark Horizons had a small scoop yesterday, announcing Damon’s next and another Affleck/Lopez team-up:
Matt Damon’s Next: The MD Column reports that Damon, as well as Don Cheadle and George Clooney have all agreed to do “Oceans Twelve”. He’ll also be directing Ben Affleck & J-Lo in an adaptation of Tom McCrory’s “Company Confidential”.
  • Those of you still reading the Green Arrow series since Kev’s departure might want to check out this free 8-page e-comic which is an Arrow/Lantern crossover.

Commentary…

January 13th @ 8:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Howdy folks, just wanted to check in and say a few words today. Been a while since we “talked”. We realize that things have been a bit slow around here lately, but those of you who have been around for a while will remember that each time we go through a new film’s release, things slow up a bit during the editing phase. A lot of directors are content to let some other folks take their film and edit it, but Kevin is VERY hands-on when it comes to his films, thus, Jersey Girl is top priority at the moment. We’re sure that some other projects will be coming, as well as some new announcements once the next film has been decided on (last we checked, it was still the R-rated Clerks cartoon movie).

So, in the meantime, sit back, and enjoy some lighter news…We’ll be keeping up to date with updates daily if needed, though if there’s an empty day here or there, it just means we’re gathering for a bigger update the next time around. And of course, keep sending in those scoops, this site wouldn’t be the same without ya.

By the way, Chris’s Sony Wega is now up for grabs at ebay — Surf over and check that out if you want a good deal. You’ll hafta pick it up, but hey, not only will ya get a nice set, but you’ll also get to say you own CHRIS’S TV and…Even get to go to CHRIS’S place to pick it up…Worth the price alone. But hey, seriously, get your bids in on that, help Chris pay his heating bill…And see below for some new auctions askew items and more news.

Kevin To Guest On “Tonight” January 24th!

January 13th @ 8:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’ve just received word that Kevin will be a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on January 24th! This is all the info we have so far, though we don’t believe this will be another Roadside Attractions appearance. It might be an interview with Jay. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more on this one.

We have also confirmed that Kevin will be at the HBO sponsored US Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado as a guest speaker — He will either do a Q&A session or a panel discussion while he’s there. The festival this year is 2/26 – 3/2. He will be doing his Q&A on the 27th.

  • More rare and one of a kind View Askew stuff goes up for grabs again this week. Yep, it can ALL be yours (or maybe just one of these things, after all, the pockets only go SO deep)…This time around, there’s a very nice Vulgar theatrical poster signed by the cast and crew, some Dogma video merchandise (signed as well), a one-of-a-kind Scott Mosier artwork, and yet another of those highly sought after Mallrats books (gosh, how we wish we’d bought a case of those suckers years ago, we’d be able to retire). Anyway, check out the goods over at Auctions Askew, and good luck with your bidding.
