December 31st @ 4:17 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • We’d like to take this chance to wish all of you a very Happy New Year! 2003! Man, they’re flying by. Seems like only yesterday we were all worried about those potential Y2K problems. While the world certainly has changed a lot in these few short years since 2000, we’re still very thankful and appreciative for everything that we are still so lucky to have. Thanks to all of you for another great year here at News Askew and View Askew. We appreciate your support, and look forward to a very exciting 2003, with “Jersey Girl”, new toys (like the Clerks inaction figures), comics, and heaps more surprises. We’re looking forward to our biggest year yet. So don’t go anywhere. We’ll see ya next year.

Now, it’s time to get ready to get out there and start partying! There likely won’t be an update tomorrow, it’s gonna be a sleep in and nurse the hangover day most likely. If you’re driving anywhere, be safe, don’t drink and drive — Take a cab, get a designated, whatever it takes. Have a blast kicking off the New Year!

Evening With Kevin DVD Review @ UK Askew…

December 31st @ 4:12 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Chris Harrison, HueyRocks

  • UK Askew’s got their DVD Review of the excellent “An Evening With Kevin Smith” DVD up at their site. Our preview discs just arrived late last week, so we’re lagging behind on this one, with all the entertaining and holiday partying going on, it’s also been tough to sit down and spend any extended time at the PC. UK Askew gives it a 5/5 review.

Just as a preview though, we will say this 2-disc set does NOT disappoint in the slightest, whether you’ve seen Kevin live before or not. You’ll love it. I threw it on during a party over the weekend, and it entertained the crowd of intoxicated folks, fans and non-fans alike. Not an easy feat. Look for our review of this set in early 2003.

UPDATE: VideoETA also has posted a very positive review of the discs.

CNN Paula Zahn Transcripts…

December 31st @ 4:07 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Gramp, Eric

  • The CNN website has posted a rough transcripts of Kevin’s appearances this morning. Here ya go, folks:
Transcript #1

PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: This was a blockbuster year at the box office with Hollywood on the verge of record-breaking numbers. So, for the inside story on the movies you missed and those you shouldn’t miss, I spoke with Kevin Smith, the hot independent director. His latest feature: “Jersey Girl.” It stars — you know these two — Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. He gives us his hits and misses for 2002.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ZAHN (on camera): “My Big, Fat Greek Wedding.” What is it about a movie like that, where you can take unknown actors, or a unknown actor, and spend what, 3 or 4 million bucks on it and end up making close to a couple of hundred million?

KEVIN SMITH, DIRECTOR AND ACTOR, “JERSEY GIRL”: A total phenomenon really. You know, how often does that happen when something that extensive (ph) with almost no marketing budget behind it just keeps earning and earning?

SMITH: This is a movie that just kind of picked up steam as it went along. Obviously, people found something in the movie that they identified with, because boy, they went out there and told the world about it.

ZAHN: “Harry Potter, Chamber of Secrets,” “Men in Black II,” “Analyze that,” another “Star Trek” movie, “Santa Clause 2,” this genre of film doesn’t seem to lose its staying power, does it?

SMITH: No, there’s always comfort in the familiar, when you can kind of sit down in the movie theater and be like, OK, I pretty much know like what the chemistry is going to be like.

“Men in Black,” I love it, it was a wonderful movie. But “Men in Black II” it felt like they were like people love that dog. It really wasn’t the dog in the last movie that did it for most people. It was the chemical between Tommy Lee and Will Smith, and they didn’t seem to share as much screen time as they had in the first one.

ZAHN: Did “Spiderman” live up to your expectations? SMITH: The first time I saw “Spiderman,” I wasn’t really wild about it, but I watched it on a tape at home.

SMITH: And the movie came out and did huge numbers. I went to see it on the big screen when things calmed down a bit, when you could finally get in to see it, and I liked it a lot more, like you know it plays wonderfully on a big screen.

ZAHN: Another movie that got a lot of attention this year was Eminem’s “8 Mile.”

ZAHN: Is this the beginning of a new career for him?

SMITH: A large cross-section of people like Eminem music. You know, I’m sure there’s a certain percentage of the audience that showed up just to see if he’d fail, rooting for him to fail. But apparently, he didn’t, because he got great acting notices.

ZAHN: If you would, Kevin, reflect on what you think were some of the movies that had the greatest impact this year.

SMITH: Two of the best movies that I saw this year were cartoons: “Ice Age” and “Lilo & Stitch.”

SMITH: “Lilo & Stitch” I thought was one of the best, if not the best, movies of the year, because that really — it did everything that a movie should do. It made you laugh, and it made you cry, it totally touched you, and it had songs in it.

ZAHN: “Ice Age” visually was just spectacular.

SMITH: “Ice Age,” yes, was wonderful to look at, and I also thought the chemistry between the voices was totally well-done, proving like, you know, you could take something familiar and as long as it’s well-written and well-directed, it doesn’t matter.

ZAHN: Yes, that’s…

SMITH: I really enjoyed that movie.

I finally got around to seeing “Austin Powers 3: Gold Member,” and (UNINTELLIGIBLE) I didn’t find it funny.

SMITH: There’s a few moments where you kind of chuckled, but it felt like diminishing (ph) returns. The movie did incredibly well, and everyone thinks that Austin Powers is really funny. And I thought he was funny the first time, but that movie to me was just kind of like, oh man.

ZAHN: Tell me a little bit about how the industry reacted to “Swept Away,” and that was the venture of Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie.

ZAHN: It did horrible at the box office.

SMITH: It’s kind of a shame. Guy Ritchie is really a talented director, and Madonna can’t seem to catch a break in movies. Don’t know why. But who knows? Who knows why stuff doesn’t work?

ZAHN: Some of the other movies you see leading the list of the worst movies of the year are “Jackass, the Movie.”

SMITH: In terms of “Jackass,” you’ve got to (UNINTELLIGIBLE), because it’s barely a movie. It’s to a certain extent a version of the TV show. I guess you’ll never go broke, you know, underestimating the intelligence of the American public, or the taste of the American public for that matter.

ZAHN: Let’s close by talking about your latest project, “Jersey Girl.” It’s your latest…

SMITH: “Jersey Girl,” yes.

ZAHN: … movie. Now, that stars, what? Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck?

SMITH: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, it will be out sometime in 2003. I had a great time shooting it.

ZAHN: Did they become a couple during the filming of this movie? Or were they a couple preceding it?

SMITH: They — I guess they had started dating right before we started rehearsing. So, they had been together for about a week, two weeks, and then suddenly we were rehearsing, and they were a couple, which was kind of great, because they were playing a couple falling in love in movie. So, the onscreen chemistry was mirrored by their offscreen chemistry.

ZAHN: So, you didn’t have to fake anything?

SMITH: Didn’t have to fake a thing, and hopefully, next year we’ll be sitting here talking about that movie and not you’re referring to it in “Swept Away” terms. That would be horrible.

Transcript #2

PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: Some of the hottest movies of 2002 are in theaters right now. Hollywood’s bringing out all the big guns from Leonardo DiCaprio to Jack Nicholson to the directing debut of George Clooney. So what should you see? I recently sat down and talked with hot indie director Kevin Smith to get his take on the can’t-miss movies of 2002.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

KEVIN SMITH, DIRECTOR: “Gangs of New York” I have seen.

ZAHN: What did you think?

SMITH: It’s fantastic, I think. The sheer volume of the flick, the sheer scope of the flick, kind of just screams out for, give it an Oscar right now, give it the best picture Oscar.

Beautiful movie, wonderfully acted, just amazing vision. You sit there as a filmmaker, you’re kind of humbled. You go like, oh, so this is what filmmaking is all about. Martin Scorcese kind of outdid himself.

ZAHN: Another movie getting a fair amount of buzz is the musical version of “Chicago” with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger. Do you think that will do well?

SMITH: I think it could do well. I don’t know, musicals don’t fare that well, but every Disney movie that comes down the pike seems to be a musical. So why wouldn’t a live action movie work, particularly if people really like the stars.

ZAHN: Let’s talk about Jack Nicholson. He’s out with in a new movie called “About Schmidt,” and I guess Oscar talk is really loud on this one.

What did you think?

SMITH: I mean, there ought to be, like, an Oscar category just for Jack Nicholson so that he doesn’t have to compete with everybody else. It seems like every time Jack Nicholson comes out in a somewhat dramatic role, people are like, it’s Jack’s year, he’s going to win again. We’re like, we know he’s a great actor, he’s wonderful, but maybe let’s give somebody else a shot this time.

It’s always a pleasure to watch Jack Nicholson, always a pleasure to watch Kathy Bates. Best picture of the year, “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.”

George Clooney, first-time director, made a better looking movie than my first five movies, far more visually engaged. I know that’s really not that great a compliment, because my movies don’t look that good, but I thought that movie was incredibly visually accomplished and incredibly well-directed, wonderful performances.

  • A show called “Headliners and Legends” airing on MSNBC about Ben Aflleck featured Ben talking about Kevin, and Kevin talking about Ben. There was a mention of Jersey Girl and mucho credit given to Kevin for helping to launch Ben’s career with Chasing Amy. Also, a brief mention of Dogma and how nice of a guy Ben is for paying back a favor to Kevin and making that flick.
  • A Clerks t-shirt was spotted on a character in the film “Comic Book Villians” towards the beginning.
  • Die-hard Jason Lee fans will be pleased to know that “Stealing Harvard” is set to arrive on DVD and VHS on February 18th, 2003.
  • It was sad to see “Push, Nevada” go so soon, but it’s nice to see the Hollywood Reporter today printing the news on a new show from Affleck and Damon’s LivePlanet:
LivePlanet is “L.A.” bound

By Nellie Andreeva

After their collaboration on the short-lived interactive drama “Push, Nevada” this fall, ABC and Touchstone TV are back in business with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s LivePlanet.

This time around, the LivePlanet principals, including Sean Bailey and Chris Moore, have set their sights on the City of Angels. The new project, “Los Angeles,” is described as a one-hour drama about nine strangers whose lives become interconnected through random events.

Zack Helm is writing the script for the show, which is in the early stages of development. Bailey is spearheading the project for LivePlanet and will serve as an executive producer alongside Moore and Helm.

Helm’s writing credits include the upcoming feature “Sector Seven” from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies.

Among other projects, LivePlanet is working with HBO and Miramax TV on the second installment of “Project Greenlight,” the reality series revolving around aspiring filmmakers.

  • Box Office Mojo posted a very interesting chart which lists the top selling DVDs for the year. “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” sold quite well in comparison to some other BIG flicks, stuff like “Vanilla Sky” and “Zoolander”. View Askew DVDs are well put together and well worth the cash, more than any discs out there for the most part. Glad to see that the big sales are being reflected on the charts.
  • This little online comic has a reference or two inspired by the Clerks animated series.
  • A scooper watching the flick “Big Fat Liar” thinks they’ve spotted the big pink chair used in “Truth or Date” (in Mallrats). It appears in a scene where characters go into a prop department on the Universal Studios lot. The Main Character’s go into the props deparment and among other things is the MallRats chair. Anyone else notice it?

  • We’re still very skeptical about all of this, but it seems more and more sites, including Dark Horizons, picked this one up today, so we figured we best run it. Apparently, Kevin is cowriting the Mad Max 4 script along with George Miller. We have yet to receive any official confirmation or denial on this from sources at View Askew. Mel Gibson will be returning for the film, with Robert Downey, Jr. rumored to be playing a villain. Regardless of Kev’s involvement, a very interesting project. We’ll keep you posted on this one.
  • Aint It Cool ran yet another Jersey Girl set report, this one not as flattering as the last…It’s shorter, and has just a few minor spoilers regarding a couple of jokes. Ananova also recently ran a blurb regarding this scene as well.

Jersey Girl Set Report From AICN…

December 22nd @ 8:44 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Greg Trawinski, Jon Farthing

  • AICN ran a new Jersey Girl set report, but we will WARN you — This article potentially has a HUGE spoiler inside it! There is a possible plot point from the flick that you probably won’t want to know, IF it’s even TRUE. Keep in mind we have not read a script for the film here, as we choose to stay away from that stuff ourselves, so we cannot confirm any spoilage, but please, read AT YOUR OWN RISK!

So, what we’ve done here is to run the story EXCEPT for the spoilage. So you can read the copy below safely:

Hey folks, Harry here… here’s a long in coming set report on JERSEY GIRL, the next Kevin Smith movie – a film that is set to move Kevin in a new direction. Now the film is mostly complete, I’ve heard from the voices out there that the film is Kevin’s best, that Affleck is remarkable and in his best form yet and that the movie is gorgeous due to Vilmos’ stunning cinematography. Sounds good to me, the only problem I see, is I’m not seeing it right now! Here ya go…

Hi Harry,

huge fan of the site, first time i have something to contribute. I’ve been sitting on this one for a while, but i think its time to file this report for all the Kevin Smith fans. I was fortunate enough to spend a few days on the set of the upcoming Kevin Smith pic (the first not of the Jay and Silent Bob series) Jersey Girl.

The film stars Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez and an adorable little girl (the Jersey Girl in question) Raquel Castro. It also stars George Carlin, Mike Starr, Stephen Root, and of course elven princess, Liv Tyler (who by the way is done no justice by film, i was blown away by how beautiful she was in person).

the majority of filming went on in Philly and south jersey, where the scene in question was shot at Paulsboro high school. There is a picture of Betty Aberlin of Mister Rogers fame as the school teacher on the newsaskew site here.

now onto the scene. I am not going to give too much away as the running joke in the scene is very funny, and will definitely be spoiled if you know its going to happen. But the premise of the scene is this: a parent-student talent show/pageant type thing. At this point the jersey girl (Affleck’s daughter in the film) is about seven. all of the acts that precede her’s are conformist to say the least, but little Gertie Trinke is not afraid to take risks in her performance, with a little help from the likes of George Carlin (grandpa trinke), liv tyler, mike starr and stephen root.

there were two things that struck me most about my experience on the set. One: Raquel Castro. what a presence! that little girl commands the attention of everyone around her (when the camera is rolling AND when it isn’t). Now im not going to make any predictions, but this little girl could be the biggest child star since Haley Joel (What have you done for me since AI) Osmet. And with a late fall release, look for an oscar push for this film.

the second thing that really struck me was the cinematographer: Vilmos Zsigmond. This guy has got his shit together. Im serious, he got what he wanted with every shot, and if he didn’t, they did it over until Vilmos was happy. he seemed very confident in everything he did, every shot choice and camera placement. every lighting change, he had to have it all perfect. look for this to be the best Kevin smith film (at least visually).

I think that this is a very courageous step in a good direction for a talented film maker. It will be unlike anything you’ve ever seen from Kevin smith (almost no cursing! Affleck whispered shit in the scene i saw), a PG 13 rating (most likely) and a family oriented plot. It seemed like Kevin was working very hard to expand his versatility on this one. So if you’re looking for dick and fart jokes this ain’t the film to see, but if you’re looking for a talented director pushing at least his personal limits on film, i think this will a very rewarding film. In the end it will be the film that people argue which was better: jersey girl or chasing amy.

well you’ve got Affleck in both, but at least it aint armaggedon.

Kevin To Write For NEW Spidey Book…

December 22nd @ 8:43 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by James Reinhardt

  • Newsarama reports that, due to the fact that he couldn’t promise he’d be able to keep up with the monthly pace of The Amazing Spiderman comic, Kevin will write his own brand new Spidey title sometime in 2003. Joe Quesada was interviewed, and broke the news:
NRAMA: Getting back to Spider-Man, speaking of the relaunches and Kevin Smith coming on as the regular Amazing writer – has that been pushed back, canceled, or what?

JQ: It was pushed back because of Jersey Girl, a little. Kevin and I had a heart to heart on the set of Jersey Girl; because I wanted to be sure…I love this guy like a retarded brother. It’s so tough to get angry at Kevin. I ask him for script, and get, ‘Oh man…you know…I got this movie thing going on, and this other stuff…’ So we talked about his taking over Amazing, and I told him that I wasn’t going to be able to cut him any slack with respect to shipping schedules. I’d need him to deliver.

So – we’re going to have Kevin launch a brand new Spider-Man title instead of JMS and JR Jr. At that point, Kevin said I was absolutely right. It’s not that he can’t do the monthly thing, but you just don’t know what’s going to come down the pike for Kevin. He just finished Jersey Girl, but every now and again, someone throws him an incredible project, and he has to run, and he’s missing for a month.

So – we wanted to make sure that Amazing continues to run smoothly, so Kevin will be launching a Spider-Man book. It might end up being controversial – gee – what a surprise for us. So – we’ll see what happens, but you can probably expect to see that sometime around mid 2003.
