  • Who would have thought that this passing mention (and one we forgot to mention in the Red Bank story last time, oops) of Jay’s current project was a scoop that even the press didn’t have yet? Kevin revealed on Saturday night that Mewes was unable to attend the weekend Q&A sessions due to working on a new film with Paris Hilton. Today, that story’s all over the place in the media. We’ll go with the Hollywood Reporter’s version:
Hilton, Mewes Bar-Hopping in ‘Bottoms Up’

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Paris Hilton and Jason Mewes are toplining the indie comedy “Bottoms Up” for Paul Walker’s Blue Collar Films and Cameo FJ Entertainment.

Described as in the vein of “Swingers,” the comedy-drama tells the story of a Midwestern bartender (Mewes) who finds love with Hilton’s character as well as money and success in Hollywood. Walker is expected to have a cameo in the project.

The script was written by Nick Ballo and Erik MacArthur. MacArthur also is directing.

Hilton, whose credits include “Raising Helen,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” and “House of Wax,” recently completed shooting the independent comedy “Pledge This!”

A Kevin Smith regular, Mewes has appeared in the writer-director’s “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Chasing Amy,” as well as “Scream 3.” He appears next in the horror comedy “Feast.”

We got near record-setting levels of scoops on this one today. It also ran with Comingsoon , JoBlo, CHUD, AZCentral, and of course, our beloved Poop Shoot. Thanks to all who wrote in with the story.

Kevin Survives Crystal Lake!

  • Alright, so maybe Crystal Lake isn’t as scary as those campy horror flicks make it out to be. Reports are coming in today from Kevin’s marathon Q&A held there last night. Kevin put on yet another astounding performance, with almost six and a half hours of time on the stage, without a break. How does this dude DO this? I swear, one of these days he’s gonna take off his face and reveal he’s a robot of some sort. Perhaps the real Kevin’s at home with the family while this robot Kev goes off and does all the PR.

But seriously, folks, after going 2 shows in a row, we just couldn’t make it to this one in middle America to cover it. However, we’ve got the next best thing to being there: Great scoopers like yourselves who love to send us all the dirt. So, we’ve taken the reports and tossed together a summary for ya:

  • Kevin was introduced by his aunt who lives in nearby McHenry, and who asked him to come and do a benefit for the Raue Theatre (who will use the proceeds from the show to purchase a commercial DVD player/projector to show films).

    “CLERKS 2”

  • There will be two new female characters (presumably the significant others of Dante and Randal) and one new male character (who we all know now will be played by Trevor Fehrman).
  • Harvey originally suggested both Amanda Peet and Radha Mitchell (as the chicks), but Kev shot that down on the grounds that “Brian and Jeff need to be the most famous thing in the movie.”
  • Kevin also said he’s thinking about running cartoon shorts (four to six minutes) in front of the flick. The goal would be to different theaters show different shorts in front (remember when they did the opposite with those “Clue” endings?) Genius.

“OH, WHAT A LOVELY TEA PARTY”

  • Will be released in a year or more, most likely in its one-hour and 47-minute Vulgarthon cut.
  • No mention of releasing it with anniversary editions of Mallrats or Chasing Amy, but Kevin pondered shrink-wrapping the DVD along with “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” He said it would eventually be released, it was just a matter of finding the best way to get the movie out. Also, no word on additional footage being included on the DVD. Kevin mirrored these thoughts at the ‘Thon. He’s confident the film will come to DVD, just now how or when.

    “SOUTHLAND TALES”

  • It will not be a musical in which Kevin will not sing.
  • Kev will play a web designer from Venice – The idea of his character as a legless Iraqi war veteran has been bandied about by Kelly, but the character is still changing.
  • As of yet Kevin hasn’t read the current draft and there’s still no shoot dates.
  • Kev described it as “Sprawling… like ‘Pulp Fiction’ or ‘Shortcuts.’”

    “DINNER FOR FIVE”

  • Kevin mentioned his hosting the IFC show “Dinner for Five” and also said Lee would be on it, although no shooting or air date was mentioned.

    “STAR WARS TV SERIES”

  • Although Kevin was extremely coy when asked, as always, he did say he’d be interested if such a show began production and said the show (again, if it started production) would most likely take place between the two trilogies, involving both major and minor characters. To this, we say…COOOL!
  • He called Mewes at one point, who revealed a few tabloid-worthy tidbits about his love life, post-rehab.

That about does it for what we could gather up on the event. Major thanks to all who wrote in. Photos were prohibited at the event, hence the lack of shots (so just look back to the shots from Red Bank, then close your eyes and imagine). With Clerks 2 now on the horizon, that’s likely the last Q&A for a bit, though after 14 hours onstage in a weekend, we imagine Kevin needs a bit of a hiatus, himself. Thanks again to Kevin for coming out, and for the venues that continue to invite him to entertain the masses for an evening.

  • Once again, the IMDB tosses up the View Askewage in their “Truly Trivial” for today:
In his commentary on the film Dogma, Kevin Smith said that working with Linda Fiorentino was so difficult that he wishes he had cast this actress for the role of Bethany. (answer)

  • The long-awaited Orgazmo DVD is now on shelves, and does feature a phone call with Kevin during one of the commentary tracks where he discusses the film. Here’s a rundown:
The Stash (very early on in its birth) sold bootlegs of Trey and Matt’s “Spirit of Christmas”.

Kevin relates a long back feud with the duo…who HATED Kev’s guts.. Why? Because during the Clerks buzz at the film fest circuit, Trey and Matt’s “Cannibal: The Musical” got its thunder stolen by Clerks. This was pre-South Park in 92-93.

Kevin then relates an anecdote of actually meeting them in 2001 when they received the “Defenders of Democracy” award. Then later he had a chat with Matt Stone, who he’d met through John Pierson years before.

Kevin admits, funnily enough, that he’s never even seen Orgazmo during his story. This was recorded around two years ago, though, so that may have changed by now.

See ya again soon, folks. And thanks for coming by News Askew today.
