Clerks Cartoon Clarifications…

April 8th @ 5:10 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Lucas Mirabella, Mark Karsteadt, Brian McQuery

Just to clarify on the confusion regarding upcoming Clerks ANIMATED projects: At both appearances last weekend, Kevin did indeed confirm the plan to do the CLERKS ANIMATED FEATURE that would go direct to video/DVD. The plot, as previously mentioned: Dante and Randal decided to make an indie feature about life at the Quick Stop.

Kevin ALSO said that they’ll be doing 5-6 CLERKS ANIMATED SHORTS that will play before CLERKS 2. Different theaters will get different shorts. Of course, all of them would be collected for the film’s eventual DVD release.

None of the deals are done on any of these projects at this point, but this is indeed what the plan is right now. Hope that clears it up for ya’ll.

Clerks 2. January 2006?

  • Yep, it’s deserving of a headline because it was a passing remark made by Kevin today. Will Clerks 2 not only be the first movie to get funding and lens under the Weinstein company, but the first to hit the silver screen as well? So far, it sure looks that way. Clerks 2. January 2006. That’s like 9 months away! We like the sound of that. We really do.

Kevin. Tonight Show. April 19th.

  • You all love the Roadside Attractions, but it’s even MORE exciting for fans when Kevin gets to spend some real couch time with Leno, chatting as we know not many can (any guy who can fill 7+ hours has no trouble telling a fun anecdote or two on The Tonight Show, we’re certain). So, we’re pleased to announce Kevin will be making an appearance as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on TUESDAY, APRIL 19TH. Consider this advanced notice to get your tickets if you’d like to sit in the audience and cheer!

Kevin will be promoting “Silent Bob Speaks”, the new book, arriving on shelves all across the country next week. Now available from the Stash, SIGNED, by clicking our pretty little banner above. Why would you order it anywhere else?

More From The Raue…

  • Here’s a few final tidbits of interest that came up in last Sunday’s appearance at Crystal Lake. The Clerks cartoon news sort of conflicts what Kevin said in Red Bamk (if it’s being reported correctly to us, perhaps it’s just a misunderstanding). So we’ll try and determine whether we will be seeing more animated Clerks stuff on video or not. Our feeling is that the project may become those mini animated shorts that will randomly screen before Clerks 2:
– Future Cartoon Movie: Kev said he currently had no plan for a Clerks cartoon feature (not even in the distant future) though said he enjoyed doing the ABC show but wasn’t too keen on writing with so many people and throwing out gag after gag for each show.

– Green Hornet: Kev mentioned working on drafts and talked primarily about how his decision not to direct freed up his writing process. As he put it, “Page Nine: The whole world blows up. It’s your problem now, sucker.” He also mentioend that John Woo was being sent a draft, and commented on how cool he thought it would be if Woo directed his vision of Green Hornet.

– Fletch Won: Kev again mentioned Braff and talked about a script, and the only date mentioned alongside the flick was April ‘06 (start of filming, same as mentioned in Red Bank).

– Pitching Shows to HBO: While most know Clerks TAS was pitched to HBO, he pitched a pair of other shows; One being of the superhero variety and the other tentatively titled “37: Tales from the Askewniverse.” (which would consist of 37 episodes). Kev also said it wasn’t so much that he wanted to do television in the future, he just wanted to know that he could if he wanted, saying, “Now I can pitch to HBO and they’re probably thinking ‘just say yes… he’s not gonna want to do it anyway.’”

While nothing may be decided yet about those cartoons…It’d be interesting to hear if we’re going to get a feature length animated, or more likely to see the pre-C2 shorts. Kevin? Any clue?

Hollywood Reporter Review: “Reel Paradise”

April 8th @ 8:08 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Alonso Duralde

  • Yes, it’s one of the few View Askew Productions that doesn’t feature a familiar duo, or any familiar faces from the other flicks…Yet it holds the honor of being the first prestigious documentary to arrive under the banner. The Hollywood Reporter gives praise to the compelling “Reel Paraise”:
Reel Paradise

View Askew Productions

AUSTIN-Storied producer’s rep John Pierson (who told his stories in his book “Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes”) is a charismatic draw for a certain kind of moviegoer — the indie-centric fan who marvels at the many filmmakering talents he has brought to light. Fortunately for the docu in which he stars, “Reel Paradise” has a broader appeal. As a portrait of a quirky American family and a study of competing cultural values, it’s an engrossing and often very funny tale. It recently screened at the South by Southwest Festival.

The Pierson clan — John, wife-partner Janet, 16-year-old Georgia and 13-year-old Wyatt — spent a year on the Fijian island of Taveuni, where they ran what they call “the world’s most remote movie theater,” a dirty, barely functional place called the 180 Meridian Cinema. In the final month of their stay, director Steve James came to document their experience.

Although the film lacks a story line as gripping as “Hoop Dreams” or an issue as powerful as “The Thin Blue Line”(previous projects for James and Pierson, respectively) and thus can’t be expected to set the boxoffice aflame, it has a mixture of humor and cultural relevance that raises it above the documentary rank and file. That appeal could be enhanced by trimming a few enjoyable but unnecessary scenes from the film. In general, “Reel Paradise” is just what it needs tobe: a vicarious vacation in an exotic setting, away from all the trappings of “civilized” life except the one moviegoers crave.

The 180 Meridian had been free all year (opening its doors to an audience that would not have been able to afford admission otherwise), which provoked an unexpected conflict:The nearby Catholic church was offended, claiming that giving things away undermined the work ethic that generations of Western missionaries had tried so hard to impose on Fiji.

Other conflicts arose as well, both at the theater (where John deals with projectionists who go on a bender instead of showing up for work) and at home (where Georgia’s popularity with local boys scandalizes her classmates’ parents, and the Piersons’ relative wealth attracts burglars). Almost all the difficulties boil down to an intriguing clash of values but are made more interesting because of the varied personalities within the family — from Wyatt, who eagerly adapts to local customs and is skeptical of his father’s highbrow tastes, to Janet, who brings a liberal intellect to bear on everything from curfews to a showing of “Jackass.”

Planted among the many cultural dramas, of course, is a motivating love of the movies. A few scenes capture a magic right out of “Sullivan’s Travels”: moviegoers who aren’t yet too jaded to howl at the antics of Buster Keaton, Steve Martin or a “Jackass” willing to attach electrodes to his nether regions. James manages to slide these moments in without letting the docu feel like a solipsistic ode to cinephilia.

We urge you all to see the film when you get a chance, especially if you love movies (and who doesn’t?). We’ll let you know when and how you can see it, as release information has not yet been announced.

  • NOTE: Kevin’s Saturday KLSX radio gig that we mentioned last update has been CANCELLED. No reschedule has been set up at this time.
  • USA Today cites Kevin as “Top Talent” among a list of directors heading to the Weinstein’s new shop. Kevin even lends a quote to the piece:
Harvey is “a businessman, but really he’s a friend, and he seems to like what we do,” says Smith, who delayed production of his Clerks sequel, The Passion of the Clerks, so it could be made by the new company.
  • The #Viewaskew chatroom on DALnet has been brought back to life — You can access the room via IRC client at irc.dal.net, or via the server hotspeed.dal.net. • Aimee Mann’s “That’s How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart,” which plays during the funeral scene in “Jersey Girl,” is now available for purchase from iTunes. You can also stream the song for free at her official site.
  • A happy belated birthday to possible future “Fletch Won” star Zach Braff, who turned 30 earlier this week.
  • Just a remimder: Mark Jwayad’s film “Oh Danny Boy” does its world premiere Saturday, 8:15PM @ the St. Johns Theater in Portland, Oregon. Mark worked on and had a scene in “Jersey Girl”.
  • Hmmm…Cinematical basically reran our Raue story in capsule form, even took a picture from us…But nary a credit? Hrmph.
  • And last, but certainly not least, happy belated to Kevin’s own muse (not MEWES), Jen Smith!
