April 6th @ 10:13 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Here’s some really great news that we wanted to let everyone know about as soon as we could…Kevin will be running the 11pm to 2am airshift on Los Angeles’ talk radio station KLSX 97.1FM. We found this phone number 888-520-9710 on their website, so get those questions ready and make sure you call up while Kevin is on the air! Sadly, it doesn’t look like there is any streaming version of the show, but we’re sure someone will record it and we’ll post it as soon as we can.

APP: “A Morning With Kevin Smith”…

  • We’re proud to say we actually beat the local press in Red Bank to publishing, with our story running on Sunday about Kevin’s marathon Q&A, but this piece is excellent, as always, from the Asbury Park Press. In print, Kevin took the front page of their Entertainment section today. Here at News Askew, it’s the top story heading up today’s news.
A morning with Kevin Smith

Filmmaker’s homecoming stretches into wee hours

By MARK VOGER – STAFF WRITER

So you’re impressed by Bruce Springsteen’s three-hour-plus shows? Another Shore native has “the Boss” beat by double, and then some.

Kevin Smith — the writer/director behind “Clerks,” “Chasing Amy” and “Jersey Girl” — turned his Red Bank homecoming into a seven-hour marathon.

Smith brought his Q&A-format program “An Evening With Kevin Smith” to the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank on Saturday. Smith promised patrons would see “two hours of a fat guy sweating.” He surprised himself when the session lasted until 3 a.m., calling this his longest Q&A ever.

Timely reference

Many wondered if Smith — a Catholic whose religion-themed comedy “Dogma” drew controversy — would allude to the death of Pope John Paul II hours earlier. Indeed, the filmmaker opened by addressing the passing of a “man of peace,” a “little bald man” who “fed the hungry.”

“Tonight,” Smith said solemnly, “I dedicate my show to Frank Perdue.” He soon added: “And the pope died.”

As you can guess, the easily offended had no place at this show. No discussion of bodily functions, sexual peccadilloes, ex-girlfriends or bizarre “what if” scenarios was off limits.

Smith warned the first questioner that he was setting the tone for the entire evening, “so don’t be askin’ me any J.Lo questions.”

Smith cracked up when one fan began his question: “Like your friend (Ben) Affleck, I, too, am a struggling actor.”

“I am totally stealing that joke,” Smith said.

Many of the evening’s funniest moments came when Smith toyed with audience members.

When a man whose hair was dyed blue approached a microphone, Smith said, “Sir! Look at you with the blue hair, expressing your individuality.”

The man shot back: “I see you’re sporting a mullet (hairstyle).”

Smith explained he is growing his hair for an upcoming role. “I’m doing it for financial reasons,” he said. “What’s your (expletive) excuse?”

Smith said Wednesday will mark two years of sobriety for Jason Mewes, his longtime friend and co-star in “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” Now that Mewes is sober, is he boring? “Oh, God, no. He was boring when he was stoned.”

Marathon session

This reviewer left the venue at 1:45 a.m., but my brother, niece and nephew saw the marathon through. “At one point, Kevin laid down on the stage and kept talking,” said my brother Brian, who added that the remaining audience members counted down to 3 a.m. in unison.

Reached on Monday, a Count Basie Theatre spokeswoman said: “There’s no ordinance that says we have to end the show at a certain time.”

But Smith still wasn’t finished by 3 a.m.

An employee of Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, Smith’s comic book store on Broad Street, said that following the show, Smith autographed items at the store until 7 a.m.

Kev Won’t Make WizWorld Philly…

April 5th @ 9:40 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Just a brief piece of news that may have gotten lost amongst the busy updates here with all of Kevin’s recent public activity. Unfortunately, Kevin won’t be able to make it out to Philadelphia this year, due to the Clerks 2 shooting schedule taking place right over that date. The flick’s gotta take precedence, folks. So, we’re sad to say, that while View Askew will still have a booth there selling lots of great swag, Kevin won’t be in attendance, AND that super cool Philly Flyers edition of the Kevin inaction figure won’t be run, either. Being a local, we really wanted to see that one, too.

But hey, just keep telling yourselves, Kevin will be making CLERKS 2 at the time…And that should make it all better on ya. With all the recent appearances, we hope you had a chance to catch Kevin in person elsewhere. Your next chance to see Kevin in the flesh should be at the end of this month, as we’re expecting to announce the Mallrats X Q&A any day now…

NW Herald: “Kevin Performs In Crystal Lake”

April 5th @ 9:39 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Alonso Duralde

  • Ha! Yet again we one-up the professionals but their piece deserves a look as well. Here’s what the local paper had to say about Kevin’s Sunday appearance at the Raue Center for the Arts:
Not so silent: Director Kevin Smith performs in Crystal Lake

CRYSTAL LAKE – Silent Bob had plenty to talk about Sunday night at the Raue Center for the Arts during a decidedly R-rated show.

Kevin Smith, the director of “Clerks,” “Dogma,” and “Chasing Amy,” who also plays the character Silent Bob in several of his movies, performed a stand-up comedy routine that played off questions from the audience.

Clad in a long trench coat, knee-length blue jean shorts, a navy-blue baseball jersey, and gym shoes without socks, Smith began his act with a dedication to a “man of peace.”

“Because he fed the people and proved one little bald man could make a difference,” Smith joked, “I would like to dedicate this show to Frank Purdue – the chicken magnate, without whom I wouldn’t be here. Or, at least, I would be thinner.”

McHenry resident Judy Irwin, who works in the marketing department for Centegra Health System, is the 34-year-old New Jersey native’s aunt and was credited with recruiting her nephew for the show.

Irwin told the audience that the show would benefit the Raue Center and enable it to buy a $20,000 commercial DVD player that could be used to show movies it otherwise would not have access to.

“So few of them are available on 35 millimeter these days,” Irwin said. “We will be able to see wonderful films the way directors meant them to be seen. It is a great step forward for the Raue, and a step forward for film preservation.”

In response to a question about his views on downloaded music and movies, Smith said he was not worried about the impact on his industry.

People who get a sneak peek at his movies usually also go to see them at the theater and still will buy his DVDs, he said.

“I’m not like that dude from Metallica,” Smith said. “Only really a handful [download movies]. If everyone here downloaded ‘Jersey Girl,’ the movie still would have flopped.”

He said “Jersey Girl,” which starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, could not overcome the immense failure of their other movie, “Gigli,” and the cancellation of actors’ wedding.

“It was like telling people, ‘Hey, remember that movie that came out two months ago that you hated? Here’s another one,’ ” Smith said.

Smith said he was working on a “Clerks” sequel, the independent movie that launched his career.

Much of his act focused on adult and sexual themes, that while mostly funny, probably was not for children.

“It was very educational for them – maybe too much,” said Crystal Lake resident Ellen Morton who left the show with her husband and two sons about two hours into Smith’s show. “It was pretty body.”

Phil and Teresa Bellah made what they said was more than an hour-long trek to the Raue Center for the show from Crest Hill.

Phil Bellah said he identified with Smith’s unique sense of humor, while his wife said she liked his comedic take on religious issues.

“A lot of people don’t understand where he is coming from,” Teresa Bellah said. “No rel

  • Check out this article on the stunning, lifelike portrait of daughter Harley that Kevin commissioned to be painted. Kevin poses with the masterpiece and gives a few quotes about it. Click above for a closer look and to read the article.
  • We’ve seen so many photos from all the recent events, that it’s tough to find a home to share them all — Or WAS! Introducting the Askew View Pixel Pound, where all your View Askew pics can find a home! Surf over, register, and share your pics with the world (well, all of the fans, anyway). We dig the site and think it’s a spectacular idea. In this digital age with folks snapping a mile a minute, this is the perfect way to organize and keep up.
  • Director Steve James came to the Lake County Film Festival, where his “Reel Paradise” (produced by Kevin and Scott) closed the festival. While answering about 45 minutes of quesitons, he revealed that they were in “negotiations” to get the film shown on cable. Given the Miramax shakeup, we should be happy about any release at all, though it would seem odd to be watching a movie about a movie theatre on television. Cable television seems to be fast becoming the new independent cinema.
  • Another tidbit that we lost last week but might be some fairly cool news, should it come to fruition: Kevin hinted that his Degrassi arc might come to DVD this Fall, after it airs Stateside. We imagine it’d be released in Canada, though shouldn’t be tough to get here. We’ll keep you posted.
  • Check out the word bubble coming out of JoBlo’s head on the homepage today.
  • And finally today: Hey, who’s to say our news doesn’t cause ripples on the web? Box Office Prophets’ report on Mewes’ new flick is mixed, but reveals that our mentioning of their black and white poll (which included “Clerks”) caused you to vote for the film and push it to the top:
BOP’s mood is best described as conflicted as we report the following news. Blue Collar Films, the production company of Paul Walker (yikes!), has cast Paris Hilton (egads!) and Jason Mewes (woohoo!) as the leads in the upcoming bartender comedy, Bottoms Up. Our beloved Mewes is best known as Kevin Smith AKA Silent Bob’s sidekick, Jay, from the Clerks movies. Fans of these movies are so passionate that they pulled a Veronica Mars the other day when the folks at News Askew hinted that they could ballot stuff our front page poll. And it worked. Take that, Schindler’s List! Anyway, Mewes, just promise us you’ll wear condoms, dude. That not-so-forbidden fruit of hers has long since turned sour.

Mallrats Reunion Q&A: End Of THIS MONTH in LA!

April 5th @ 12:29 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Okay, LA, you ready to pack the Arclight again? Nothing’s been officially announced just yet, but we’re hearing that, due to timing issues with the DVD release and Clerks 2’s filming, the Mallrats 10th Anniversary Screening, reunion, and Q&A session is happening at the end of April. Yes, LESS THAN A MONTH AWAY! We’ll have details for you any day now. Keep watching. Not sure if we’ll be able to make the trek back to Cali so soon, but we’ll see if we can get some coverage for ya. Stay tuned.

By the way, this news reminds me of the girl in Red Bank’s Q&A whose favorite character from the Askewniverse was T.S. T.S.! Kevin almost did a spit take. He was in awe. So were the rest of us. Somehow, we dunno if London’s gonna show for the screening, but hey, it’d be interesting…

Mewes & Hilton Go “Bottoms Up”…

April 4th @ 11:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jeff Moon, Anthony Bannon, Andy Arnold, SamLowry, Papa John, The Spaz, Dion Dodoussat, Greg Anderson, Alonso, Kevin Armot, Samuel Kokotis

  • Who would have thought that this passing mention (and one we forgot to mention in the Red Bank story last time, oops) of Jay’s current project was a scoop that even the press didn’t have yet? Kevin revealed on Saturday night that Mewes was unable to attend the weekend Q&A sessions due to working on a new film with Paris Hilton. Today, that story’s all over the place in the media. We’ll go with the Hollywood Reporter’s version:
Hilton, Mewes Bar-Hopping in ‘Bottoms Up’

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – Paris Hilton and Jason Mewes are toplining the indie comedy “Bottoms Up” for Paul Walker’s Blue Collar Films and Cameo FJ Entertainment.

Described as in the vein of “Swingers,” the comedy-drama tells the story of a Midwestern bartender (Mewes) who finds love with Hilton’s character as well as money and success in Hollywood. Walker is expected to have a cameo in the project.

The script was written by Nick Ballo and Erik MacArthur. MacArthur also is directing.

Hilton, whose credits include “Raising Helen,” “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat” and “House of Wax,” recently completed shooting the independent comedy “Pledge This!”

A Kevin Smith regular, Mewes has appeared in the writer-director’s “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Chasing Amy,” as well as “Scream 3.” He appears next in the horror comedy “Feast.”

We got near record-setting levels of scoops on this one today. It also ran with Comingsoon , JoBlo, CHUD, AZCentral, and of course, our beloved Poop Shoot. Thanks to all who wrote in with the story.

Kevin Survives Crystal Lake!

April 4th @ 11:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Ben Erwin, Patrick McCarron, Chad, Paul Simon

  • Alright, so maybe Crystal Lake isn’t as scary as those campy horror flicks make it out to be. Reports are coming in today from Kevin’s marathon Q&A held there last night. Kevin put on yet another astounding performance, with almost six and a half hours of time on the stage, without a break. How does this dude DO this? I swear, one of these days he’s gonna take off his face and reveal he’s a robot of some sort. Perhaps the real Kevin’s at home with the family while this robot Kev goes off and does all the PR.

But seriously, folks, after going 2 shows in a row, we just couldn’t make it to this one in middle America to cover it. However, we’ve got the next best thing to being there: Great scoopers like yourselves who love to send us all the dirt. So, we’ve taken the reports and tossed together a summary for ya:

  • Kevin was introduced by his aunt who lives in nearby McHenry, and who asked him to come and do a benefit for the Raue Theatre (who will use the proceeds from the show to purchase a commercial DVD player/projector to show films).

    “CLERKS 2”

  • There will be two new female characters (presumably the significant others of Dante and Randal) and one new male character (who we all know now will be played by Trevor Fehrman).
  • Harvey originally suggested both Amanda Peet and Radha Mitchell (as the chicks), but Kev shot that down on the grounds that “Brian and Jeff need to be the most famous thing in the movie.”
  • Kevin also said he’s thinking about running cartoon shorts (four to six minutes) in front of the flick. The goal would be to different theaters show different shorts in front (remember when they did the opposite with those “Clue” endings?) Genius.

“OH, WHAT A LOVELY TEA PARTY”

  • Will be released in a year or more, most likely in its one-hour and 47-minute Vulgarthon cut.
  • No mention of releasing it with anniversary editions of Mallrats or Chasing Amy, but Kevin pondered shrink-wrapping the DVD along with “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.” He said it would eventually be released, it was just a matter of finding the best way to get the movie out. Also, no word on additional footage being included on the DVD. Kevin mirrored these thoughts at the ‘Thon. He’s confident the film will come to DVD, just now how or when.

    “SOUTHLAND TALES”

  • It will not be a musical in which Kevin will not sing.
  • Kev will play a web designer from Venice – The idea of his character as a legless Iraqi war veteran has been bandied about by Kelly, but the character is still changing.
  • As of yet Kevin hasn’t read the current draft and there’s still no shoot dates.
  • Kev described it as “Sprawling… like ‘Pulp Fiction’ or ‘Shortcuts.’”

    “DINNER FOR FIVE”

  • Kevin mentioned his hosting the IFC show “Dinner for Five” and also said Lee would be on it, although no shooting or air date was mentioned.

    “STAR WARS TV SERIES”

  • Although Kevin was extremely coy when asked, as always, he did say he’d be interested if such a show began production and said the show (again, if it started production) would most likely take place between the two trilogies, involving both major and minor characters. To this, we say…COOOL!
  • He called Mewes at one point, who revealed a few tabloid-worthy tidbits about his love life, post-rehab.

That about does it for what we could gather up on the event. Major thanks to all who wrote in. Photos were prohibited at the event, hence the lack of shots (so just look back to the shots from Red Bank, then close your eyes and imagine). With Clerks 2 now on the horizon, that’s likely the last Q&A for a bit, though after 14 hours onstage in a weekend, we imagine Kevin needs a bit of a hiatus, himself. Thanks again to Kevin for coming out, and for the venues that continue to invite him to entertain the masses for an evening.

  • Once again, the IMDB tosses up the View Askewage in their “Truly Trivial” for today:
In his commentary on the film Dogma, Kevin Smith said that working with Linda Fiorentino was so difficult that he wishes he had cast this actress for the role of Bethany. (answer)

Know the answer? Wanna know? Click HERE.

  • The long-awaited Orgazmo DVD is now on shelves, and does feature a phone call with Kevin during one of the commentary tracks where he discusses the film. Here’s a rundown:
The Stash (very early on in its birth) sold bootlegs of Trey and Matt’s “Spirit of Christmas”.

Kevin relates a long back feud with the duo…who HATED Kev’s guts.. Why? Because during the Clerks buzz at the film fest circuit, Trey and Matt’s “Cannibal: The Musical” got its thunder stolen by Clerks. This was pre-South Park in 92-93.

Kevin then relates an anecdote of actually meeting them in 2001 when they received the “Defenders of Democracy” award. Then later he had a chat with Matt Stone, who he’d met through John Pierson years before.

Kevin admits, funnily enough, that he’s never even seen Orgazmo during his story. This was recorded around two years ago, though, so that may have changed by now.

See ya again soon, folks. And thanks for coming by News Askew today.
