  • BigFanBoy.com posted an interview they scored with Kevin during Wizard World Chicago this year. Check it out HERE and read all about CLERKS 2, Spider-Man/Black Cat, the upcoming Degrassi DVD, and more!
  • The hosts of Fanboy Radio have confirmed that Kevin will guest this Sunday, September 25th. From their newsletter:
“I’m very happy Kevin will be on for his own show” says Hinze. “He called into the live Jim MahFood interview, and after the time we had on that broadcast it was easy to book him for his own hour. Over the many months, I’ve given him plenty of criticism over the delay of Spider-Man/Black Cat & Daredevil: Target but I see this hour of comic talk as one of healing between Smith and fandom. And just in case you’re still sore, it’s an open line show – give us a call and tell Kevin what’s on your mind.”

To listen to Fanboy Radio, go to http://www.fanboyradio.com at the time of their live broadcast (Wednesdays @ 1pm CST & Sundays @ 6pm CST), subscribe to the Fanboy Radio Podcast found at http://www.fbrpc.com or browse through the massive MP3 episode archives at http://www.fanboyradio.com.

  • Jason Lee’s early film effort “Weapons Of Mass Distraction” is finally out on DVD, as of August 30 after a previous delay of some type. It was originally supposed to street in June or thereabouts.
  • And hey, how can we mention Lee without talking about “My Name Is Earl”? Did you put away your Mallrats DVD long enough to watch tonight? You’d better have! And in case you need more convincing, the Detriot Free Press says the show”…shines a bright and funny light on the human condition. It’s a keeper.”
  • Some more interesting “Southland Tales” tidbits came up today — First, up, one of the film’s many stars, Sean William Scott (also an ex-Askewer), chats quite a bit about the film, in what we think is a must-read interview at Freeze Dried Movies. Here’s a few good clips from that one:
FDM: You said that Richard says each character has a point in the film, what’s your character’s point?

FDM: So what happens in 2008 when you see this film?

SWS: I don’t now what Richard wants me to talk about. He said I think you can assume there have been more terrorist attacks in America or enough of a threat to have a heightened security and it takes place in Los Angeles. We see that quite a bit in surveillance and around the city and stuff like that. A lot of things that are done lie people’s fingerprints as identification.

FDM: What’s your characters criminal background?

SWS: I don’t think we ever really get into it. The brother who is the actual police man is a bit mysterious. We know that he’s been involved in something that’s a little shady.

FDM: What are there names?

SWS: Roland Taverner and Ronald Taverner.

FDM: Which one’s the cop?

SWS: Ronald

FDM: They both have the shaved head look?

SWS: Yeah, they look exactly alike.

FDM: The set in the future, is there a lot of production design to extrapolate what it would look like in 2008?

SWS: It’s not ‘Blade Runner’, but there are some elements of Philip K Dick. There is a little bit about how people dress, it’s futuristic- the cars a little bit. A lot of it I haven’t seen, I just heard about. Its one of those movies with such a huge cast and so much is going on and such an ambitious schedule- it’s almost like a paid vacation for me, I only work like 14 days. Every day I come in it’s so much fun but there’s so much information that I’m going to see and be like ‘wow you guys did all that too!’ (laughs) It’s pretty specific, but it’s not like ‘Blade Runner’

SWS: (laughs) I don’t want to ruin it. I play a brother who is a cop and his twin brother who is a bit mysterious- he has amnesia, much like The Rock’s character. The brother only really remembers things from the last six days and he’s been pretty much been in control of this neo-Marxist group who are using him to pull off this big blackmail scam involving The Rock’s character. And he’s trying to piece things together as the movie goes along and he feels like he’s not being told the truth about who he is or what’s going on. Most of the movie the cop has been drugged and tied up until the end of the film.

FDM: Do you have any big action stunts?

SWS: I do at the end of the movie. What’s nice for me is I pay two characters that are kind of quiet. Everybody else has more crazy exciting roles. It’s nice for me to actual something that’s a little bit more subtle. Especially in a movie like this; I think it will be a really good film.

ALSO: Continuing Joblo.com‘s coverage of Southland Tales, the beginning article of a set visit to the new Richard Kelly movie. At the opening of the article author states:

“Last Friday I visited the set of Southland Tales with one simple goal: to find out just exactly what the film is about. Few projects are shrouded in more secrecy (and confusion) than Richard Kelly’s much-anticipated follow-up to his cult hit DONNIE DARKO….Unfortunately, I left the set at the end of the day more confused than ever. I do know that it isn’t a musical. And I’m pretty sure that there aren’t any bunnies in this one.”

What follows is an extremely entertaining interview with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in which he discusses his experience making the movie including his first impressions of the script and working with Richard Kelly. This will likely be a series of interviews with the enormous cast such as Joblo has done in the past.

The secrecy has been maintained and will continue to be as Mr. Johnson states later in the interview:

“It’s very secretive and kept under wraps….there are so many things in that script that only [Richard Kelly] can answer and only he can piece together. And a lot of it is left up to one’s interpretation.”

The full interview can be found HERE.

TV Guide Chats With Kev!

September 21st @ 2:26 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nicholas G. Frerman, Eric Fortune

  • Just some short Q&A with Kevin here, which sees to have been conduced at least a week ago (due to his mentioning not having seen “Earl” yet. Interestingly enough, though, it seems that, should this show take off as a hit, Lee will again become a very viable property for that Fletch flick Kevin has always wanted to make! Fantastic news, indeed. Here’s the interview:
Kevin Smith Loves His ‘Rats Packby Tim Williams

Director Kevin Smith always gives his fans a bit more than they expected (OK, and sometimes wanted) with his fully loaded DVD releases. His ’95 flick Mallrats (out today on DVD) has Smith showing his indie spirit by presenting a brand-new cut of the comedy. Here the sly director relaxes with TVGuide.com to riff about the ‘rats, a new Clerks and why he’s not buzzing around The Green Hornet.

TVGuide.com: Mallrats didn’t set the box office on fire when it came out in theaters. Why do this extended DVD?

Kevin Smith: I thought after Mallrats came out and wasn’t well received that no one would ever talk about it again, other than in film class as, “Never do this!” At the time it came out I felt like I was having all my ideas rejected, and sometimes you buy into what [critics] say. Today, I see it as an entertaining movie, and it has found an audience on home video. We’re doing this extended-cut DVD because Universal told me Mallrats is a top seller. But I must say, if you didn’t like Mallrats the first time you saw it, this new version isn’t going to make you see the light. If you loved Mallrats, then you’ll like the DVD because you’ll get more of the same.

TVGuide.com: I heard you are doing a sequel to Clerks?

Smith: Yeah, I can’t wait, sir. We start shooting Oct. 10. It’s a story about what happens to the angry young man once he turns 35. We’ve got all the same guys from the first film.

TVGuide.com: Are you still doing [a feature version of] The Green Hornet?

Smith: I backed off The Green Hornet about six months ago. I wrote the script and then thought this is far too big for me to do. I’m not talented enough to do an action film at this time in my life. I don’t want to be the director who is given $70 million to do a movie and screws the pooch.

TVGuide.com: Think you’ll join your Mallrats star/all-around go-to guy Jason Lee on his new NBC show, My Name Is Earl?

Smith: Ha! Jason has e-mailed me and said he might want me to direct an episode, but I haven’t seen the show yet. I’m so delighted Jason is getting the recognition he deserves. Maybe now I can make a Fletch film staring Jason — I’ve wanted to do that for five years.

TVGuide.com: What do you think of your friend Ben Affleck’s marriage to Jen Garner?

Smith: They’re a very sweet couple and insanely compatible. That kid they’re having will be gorgeous — carved from God’s own wood.

TVGuide.com: You’ve popped up on a lot of TV recently. Is this a new career?

Smith: Ha! I did Veronica Mars [airing Oct. 5], Degrassi and just recently an episode of Joey [airing Sept. 22]. I have a hard time saying no to anyone who wants to put me on TV. I feel like the new McLean Stevenson — look for me next on “Match Game 2005” or maybe The Love Boat.

  • Yep, “Earl” did it! Here’s what IMDB has to say about last night’s premiere episode:
‘Earl’ Is a Pearl for NBC

The series debut of My Name Is Earl on NBC Tuesday night won its time period with a 9.3 rating and a 14 share, helping the struggling network win the night. The show had been receiving massive critical praise. (The pilot reportedly tested stronger with focus groups than any NBC show had in 15 years.) On Tuesday, the Detroit Free Press described it as “a gen-u-wine, fresh-squeezed screwball pearl.” And Kay McFadden in the Seattle Times commented, “If any show can single-handedly turn around NBC this fall, it’s My Name Is Earl.”

  • In case you missed it, yesterday’s newsbite interview with Kevin did indeed finally have him revealing he was NOT asked to be involved with the Star Wars television show…ever:
“The STAR WARS stuff is horseshit. There was never any truth to that rumor. I think someone even said Lucasfilm had made an official announcement about my involvement at some point. Not true at all. I’d be honored to work on something like that, but it’s honestly never come up.”
  • Be sure to check that Mallrats DVD Easter Eggs story just below again, we’ve made a few additions to it thanks to our astute readership. Thanks all, nice hunting.
  • Here’s a quick report that came in regarding a radio call-in that Kevin did on KRAB 106.1 in Bakersfield, CA yesterday:
…I heard part of it this morning on a “This is what you’ve been missing” kind of spot where they replayed what happened yesterday. The hosts basically introduced Kevin by naming all the movies, and started professing to him what geeks and dorks they were. Kevin then said he was ready to take his knocks for “Jersey Girl”, whereupon they all stated that they thought Jersey Girl was touching and funny and Kevin responded “Thats great, I wish you guys were the audience.”

If anyone perchance taped the phone in, let us know so we can add it to the archives. Later!
