  • When the IMDB runs scoops, people certainly listen. Lots of scoops on this one today. If you don’t know the answer to today’s Truly Trivial question from that site, do not pass go, and don’t collect the 200 bucks:
Two things you might like to know about this writer-director: (1) he dropped out of Vancouver Film School, (2) he sold his comic book collection to partially finance his first film.
  • And of course the IMDB has to get a little Kevin gossip up there today as well…The Los Angeles Daily News ran a piece today that got picked up. The scan’s right here, and the IMDB piece as it appears on the site today, comes straight ahead:
Fatherhood Prompts Affleck To Ditch Parties

Ben Affleck has ditched Hollywood parties for a more serene life since his wife Jennifer Garner became pregnant, according to his director pal Kevin Smith. Daredevil co-stars Affleck and Garner, who wed at the end of June, after expecting the arrival of their first child together this winter. And while Affleck has been notably absent from his beloved poker tables, he’s also become less of a fixture at Tinseltown gatherings. Smith says, “He seems to have settled down, regardless. He hasn’t been a party guy for a little while now. I think it’s phenomenal. I think he’ll be a fantastic dad. When we were working on Jersey Girl, we had! a lot of babies on our set, and he was always really great with them. I think most guys are like me – they tend to shy away from other people’s kids because you never want to be the a*s that drops somebody’s baby. He was fearless. He would scoop them up and throw them into the air.”

  • We’re stoked for Jason Lee and the big “My Name Is Earl” premiere that’s just 13 days away now — And thanks to Will Wilkins for hooking us up with a nice copy of the pilot. We’ll have a short review of that first episode, with spoilers (so watch out!) as well as a comparison with the original script that we’ve got our mitts on. All before the show premieres on NBC in two weeks. In the meantime, here’s more positivity from TV Guide Insider:
Jason Lee Makes a Name for Himself

Is silver-screen wiseacre Jason Lee done Chasing Amy, living the life of an Almost Famous rocker and hanging with the Mallrats beneath that bizarre Vanilla Sky? Yes… and no. Yes, the affable actor is braving the frontier of episodic TV, but no, his starring role in NBC’s My Name Is Earl (premiering Sept. 20 at 9 pm/ET) does not signal the end of his film career. So why the switch? Are Kevin Smith and Cameron Crowe simply not churning out enough movies for him to appear in? “It’s all due to Mr. Greg Garcia,” he tells TVGuide.com, referring to Earl’s creator. “He and the script [attracted me to the show].”Lee, who is also a producer on Earl, admits to having a few apprehensions about taking on his new gig as a hapless lunk who, after winning (and then incredibly, losing) the lottery, is spurred on by the wisdom of Carson Daly and sets out to correct every bad thing he’s ever done. “It took me a while to decide,” he explains. “I didn’t want to become locked into being known for a character as opposed to as an actor; the schedule is kind of brutal; and being on one thing for so long as opposed to moving around, which I was used to doing, [is tough]. But I couldn’t deny the quality of the material. Good material is good material so, ultimately, it made sense to do it. “Besides, Earl’s half-hour length makes for “nice, long hiatuses,” he says. “There will be breaks for me to do other things, like films. It all weighed out.”While chatting with Lee, we simply had to ask which of his numerous, varied and always-colorful big-screen endeavors is his personal favorite. Interestingly, his was ours. “Vanilla Sky was a movie where I was like, ‘OK, what Chasing Amy did for me, this will do for me, but on an even bigger level,’” he relates. “It was an opportunity for me to show people that I’m not just the goofy or smartass sidekick, that I’ve got some meat here, so I was genuinely excited and thought for sure we were going to be at the Oscars.” Instead, he sighs, “All I could hear were crickets. People either loved it with a passion or hated it.”Perhaps, we suggest, the haters just didn’t “get” it. “You do tend to criticize what you don’t understand,” Lee concurs. “A lot of people would come up to me and say, ‘I didn’t like that movie,’ and I would have to say, ‘Did you understand it?’ Once I realized it was just ignorance [fueling much of the dissent], I just let it go. “I thought that movie would put me on the map,” he says in conclusion. “But I never saw any map!”

  • After being inspired by Mattt Potter’s effort on the Mallrats version of the Batman Begins trailer, reader Tom Smith came up with this amusing take on the Mallrats version of the “Sin City” theatrical trailer. You can watch it via his website in both Windows Media and Quicktime flavors. It’s really clever work, using fun moments, color in all the right places, and some hilarious similarities to the Sin City dialogue. Worth watching more than once, for sure. And don’t forget, in case ya missed it — Our full Mallrats 10th Anniversary DVD Review lives HERE — Just 13 days til the rest of you get to see the brilliant new cut!
  • Want to scarf up a cheap 2-disc copy of Mark Hamill’s Comic Book: The Movie (in which Kevin appears)? We’re getting reports that local Wal-Mart stores have the set for under $7! True dat. Happy hunting.
  • And last, but certainly not least today, thanks to Dark Horizons and Film Stew for mentioning View Askew’s Katrina Benefit Auction in their updates today. Response has been astounding, with the BBQ at Kev’s place alone up to almost $6,000 at press time. Thanks to everyone for your incredible generosity. The human spirit is alive and well in the USA.

View Askew’s Katrina Aid Auction…

September 6th @ 3:00 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Kevin Smith

  • The recent events surrounding Hurricane Katrina here in the U.S. have all of us at View Askew sending our thoughts and prayers to the families and those affected. It appears to be the greatest natural disaster in our nation’s history. If you’re reading this, you (or perhaps your family) most likely have the affluence to give just a few dollars for the reconstruction effort. For example, a $100 donation to The Salvation Army (or a similar organization) will feed a family of four for two days, provide two cases of drinking water, and one household clean-up kit, containing brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning supplies. Every dollar counts, mind you.

To aid in the relief effort for the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina victims, View Askew is holding a special edition of Auctions Askew. We’ve come up with what we think you’ll feel are five pretty cool prizes to bid on, with every penny earned going straight to the Red Cross. And whatever we earn, Kev will match himself!

Each item has a minimum starting bid, but that’s not to say each item will be won by that amount. We’re hoping the bidding goes higher than our minimums, so bid often and much! While starting bids may seem high, remember: this is all for charity. And it’s not like you’re not getting something in return: each prize is a one-of-a-kind reward for the largest charitable donations!

Here’s a brief rundown of the 5 amazing offerings for this special, important auction:

  • A barbeque at Kevin Smith’s house in Los Angeles.
  • A walk-on role in “Clerks 2” (you WILL be seen onscreen in the film, for sure!)
  • A set visit to “Clerks 2” – Watch the magic happen
  • A box of every single t-shirt the Stash sells (trust us…that’s a LOT of t-shirts)
  • A voice mail message for your loyal callers recorded by Kevin Smith himself.

Give hope. Click here to place your bid, or, donate directly to the Red Cross or Convoy of Hope.

  • Kevin made a surprise call-in appearance today on Fanboy Radio, a radio talk show about comic books. The featured guest was Jim Mahfood. Kevin called in and chatted a while with Mahfood and the hosts. It was a very cool, unexpected moment in live radio. They should have the program up for free download on their podcast site, www.fbrpc.com, later on this evening (if not already).

  • Clerks gets a mention in “The Movie Blog Audio Edition 37” (of all numbers) — In the clip, the discussion turns to indie films, and about 8 and a half minutes in, Clerks gets brought up as they debate over Miramax being a true “indepdendent” studio. Listen to the clippage HERE.

Two New Weeks of “Silent Bob Speaks!”

September 5th @ 3:01 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Hey, we’re poets and we didn’t even know it. Silent Bob Speaks gets a huge jump to present day this holiday weekend, as we get MAJOR MAJOR dish from Kevin on a ton of proejcts he’s just filmed (including a guest spot on “Joey” that totally comes out of left field, first we’re reporting it), and just heaps of details on everything else. With this update, starting with August 22nd and going all the way up to September 4th (yesterday), you’ll see just why the dude was so busy that updates had to be caught up in this fashion (in fact, we’re amazed he had time to get to this stuff AT ALL now that we’re reading this). Here’s the cliff notes and highlights from this batch ‘o updates:
  • Matt LeBlanc

    Richard Kelly

    Kristen Bell

  • On the new Degrassi shooting and the proposed feature film: “…We spend the day shooting the two part follow-up to our three episode arc from last year, in which Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are back in Toronto for the world premiere of “Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh”. Today’s all stage stuff, and tomorrow, we go on location for the fake premiere stuff.

I spend lunch talking to “Degrassi” creator/mastermind Linda Schuyler and her husband, exec producer Stephen Stohn about the “Degrassi” feature and the script revamp we’re working on, coming up with “It Goes There” storylines worthy of the “Degrassi” legacy. By lunch’s end, Jim hands me his cell, saying Jen’s on the line. Jen and I talk for awhile, until I have to roll back to the set and shoot.”

  • On meeting “Joey”: “…In makeup, I meet Matt LeBlanc, who seems like a really nice guy. He gives me a heads-up that the writers rewrote our scene last night. I tell him I rewrote the scene last night, to which he responds “So that’s why you have all the jokes now.””
  • On the NEW “Southland Tales”: “…Turns out Richard’s given the script a complete overhaul. What was once a film that played like a cross between “Pulp Fiction” and “Short Cuts” is now a quasi-sci-fi epic that plays like a cross between “Dr. Strangelove” and “Donnie Darko”. Whereas the previous draft was set in a recognizable world, this version’s set in the not-too-distant future, after a second terrorist attack on the U.S. Neither film is better than the other; both are pretty brilliant. This version, however, is more inscrutable – more “Darko”.”
  • On his “Southland Tales” look: “…Three hours later, he has changed my look, entirely. Looking in the mirror, I see a sixty year old version of myself, with a long, gray bear, and wrinkled, war-torn skin. Louis is pretty amazing at what he does.I’m driven up to set, where I chit-chat with Richard a bit, who’s happy with the makeup job. He helps me get a bead on my paramilitary, paraplegic character, Simon Thiery before I climb into my motorized wheelchair to get a feel for the controls. Richard’s cool with me ad-libbing, but my dialogue is so plot-specific, I don’t alter it much – just flavor it up.”

Visit the SBS Boring-Ass Life blog site for the full story, as always…We’re just here to make a few footnotes. There’s nothing like the real thing. We’re going over the news-specific stuff, but there’s lots of great bits including some background into the EA Sports hockey game that pops up a couple times in the earlier films. And this time, there’s exclusive photos that you’ll ONLY find at the blog site. Not here or anywhere else. So use it!

Lee All Over Entertainment Weekly

September 4th @ 3:04 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by mattman, Greg Trawinski, DarrOn, Belinda

  • The September 9 issue of Entertainment Weekly (#838/839) includes lots of Jason Lee goodness. The first is a 2-page spread ad for MY NAME IS EARL. The second is a preview for the upcoming season of AMERICAN DAD that reveals Lee will be a guest-voice this season. And the final scan is a preview of MY NAME IS EARL itself.

We’ve also heard that some issues also contain a “NBC First Look” CD-ROM which contains the complete first episode of MY NAME IS EARL. We’re not sure if the disc appears in newsstand copies of the magazine or if it’s subscriber only, but it’s definitely worth looking for. The show premeires on NBC September 20th.

More Press: “Reel Paradise” Hits L.A. Today!

September 2nd @ 3:05 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Some of you lucky fans may be there, as “Reel Paradise” celebrates it’s Los Angeles premiere tomorrow – As such, some excellent press coming our way for the film, from many reputable, widely read publications, such as the LA Times and LA Weekly. Check it out:
A great review in tomorrow’s L.A. Times:

“Pierson revels in his role as cinematic proselytizer, beckoning to the Taveunians to enjoy his offerings. The uproarious laughter that floats from the cinema wonderfully illustrates the universality of the moviegoing experience.”

A nice feature in the L.A. Times:

“Whether it was a projectionist drunk on homemade grog or faulty wiring that made equipment go up in smoke, independent film producer John Pierson was in for a challenge when he took over a rickety 288-seat movie theater on Fiji’s remote island of Taveuni.”

From the LA Weekly (the same critic, ironically, who butchered both “Strike Back” – in Variety – and “Jersey Girl”, in the Weekly):

“The final month of Pierson’s quixotic quest is chronicled by documentary filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, Stevie) in Reel Paradise and the result is an enormously warm, comic travelogue about how you can go to the ends of the earth and still not escape from temperamental teenagers, absentee landlords and the universal language of moving pictures. “

The Weekly also made it the Top Pick of the Week.

And from LA City Beat:

“Toward the end of their stay, Pierson invited Steve James – the highly acclaimed director of Hoop Dreams and Stevie – to come over for a month and shoot a documentary … “to have a record of what it was like in that movie theater,” as Pierson says. Reel Paradise, however, is a good deal more than that – a look at contemporary Americans (or, at least, the Piersons) adapting to a third-world environment.”
