Complete San Diego Q&A Video!

August 6th @ 11:30 am | No Comments » | Scooped by John Whiteaker

  • For the first time ever, Comic Book Resources have presented a full length Q&A session from the San Diego con on their website — And wouldn’t luck have it, it’s the complete Q&A from Kevin last weekend! Kevin was sadly delayed due to traffic, so the panel was pushed back to later in the day. So, if some of you missed it due to the scheduling change, or just weren’t there, here’s your chance to watch Kevin amuse the crowd as he takes on a variety of questions, both smart and really, really stupid.

As you can see from the uncut video, these things are always full of fun and surprises. Watch our upcoming events page for your own chance to catch Kevin live, and GO. You’ll have a blast. And of course, watch for Evening 2: Evening Harder on DVD this Fall.

(Editor’s note: If we forgot any scoopers on this story, we’re sorry. Let us know and we’ll get your credit. We lost our first post of this.)

  • The wonderful Rosario Dawson fills in for Kevin at ComicCon during his delay, sweetheart that she is. YouTube’s got the video, around ten minutes or so. A story above features the complete Kevin panel which happened later in the day.
  • Comic Book Resources recaps Kevin’s Wizard World Chicago panel from this weekend with a nice summary. Here’s a preview:
A straightforward “what’s next” led to a game of rock-paper-scissors to determine if Smith would reveal his upcoming project. Although the fan lost the match, Smith said that he would be making a horror film. Also, he is “nowhere close” to completing “Daredevil: Target,” of which only one issue was released back in 2002. Smith said that if he returned to the project, there would likely be a “reboot” of issue 1, since the original features an image of the World Trade Center as rubble and the site no longer resembles the story art.

There was a question about Smith’s appearance on “Ebert and Roeper.” Smith said that the episode taped Friday morning, and will air next weekend. The movies covered are “World Trade Center,” “Half Nelson,” “Scoop,” and “Step Up,” but Smith said he cannot comment on the reviews until the episode is shown.

  • Ethan Suplee has joined the cast of NBC’s “The Year Without a Santa Claus,” which stars John Goodman, Delta Burke, Chris Kattan, Harvey Fierstein, Michael McKean Eddie Griffin and Carol Kane. The two-hour movie, based on the 1974 Rankin-Bass perennial that featured stop-motion animation, will air during the upcoming 2006 holiday season.
  • Amazon now confirms that a new book IS coming next year: “In-Convenience: The View Askewniverse From Clerks To Clerks II” collects all of the Kevin Smith film scripts for the first time ever, together with numerous photos. We’ll have a great deal on signed copies from the Stash when this arrives next year, and let you know when they’re ready for pre-order from us.
  • We’ve broke into a new magazine — From the August 7, 2006 issue of Business Week, this blurb appears:
On The Set — Call them blogbusters. Video diaries made by directors or actors on a movie set have consistently been on iTunes’ most-downloaded list this summer. Some of these moviemaking video journals remain on the site’s top 100 list even after the movies are released. Among the latest entries: Actor Jack Black’s videoblog about the making of Nacho Libre (which he also produced) and Zach Braff’s videotaped diary about The Last Kiss, the upcoming DreamWorks comedy in which he stars. Director Kevin Smith pumped out 75 video posts about the making of Clerks II. They got 3 million downloads before the movie came out on July 21.

The text also included a picture of a video iPod showing a scene with Kevin and Jason talking.

  • Catch some glimpses of Affleck in the “Smoking Aces” trailer over at The Movie Box. Catch you again soon! Hope you’re having a fine weekend.

August 4th @ 6:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by BigDave, JudyMack

  • Prepare to want something — These Clerks posters were created exclusively for the Netflix Rolling Roadshow of the film next week. They are VERY limited and VERY cool. The pre-orders have sold out, though we hear a select couple will be available at the show — If anyone knows how we might snag ourselves a couple, LET US KNOW. We’d love that. Check out the Clerks posters above, and BigDave’s post for all the other variants for the other roadshow flicks, cool in their own right, created by famous rock poster arists.

You can visit the excellent official site of the Rolling Roadshow for more info and coolness. See you next week, 7:00 PM in Red Bank’s Marine Park! Q&A runs at 7, with the flick at 8:30! The movie is free and seating is first come, first served. Tons more Q&A at that page, including the fact you CAN bring food, NOT alcohol mind you (so sorry, no Clerks drinking game re-creations here). Looks to be BIG fun this Tuesday!

A press release states that Clerks will show at 10 AM, followed by a Kevin Q&A starting at 2. They claim the Q&A will go to at least 4, but will allow him extra hours if needed. This could be a marathon, folks, don’t miss it!

  • Kevin & Roeper “At the Movies” update: Kevin taped the episode TODAY. It will air the weekend of August 12th and 13th (NEXT weekend).
  • Box Office Mojo reports that Clerks II broke the $20 million mark late this week. This remains an excellent achievement for a flick that cost just $5 million to make! And the international and DVD profits are still to come (not to mention the rest of the theatrical run). Another success! Congrats to all.
  • Ben Affleck has received a great positive plug in Liz Smith’s column in the Post this week, about portraying George Reeves in his new film, “Hollywoodland”. Good buzz on this one all around, so far. Good on ya, Ben!
  • One fan loved Clerks II so much he blogged about the entire day’s experience of seeing the film.
  • Podcast “PopuCast” episode #001 gives a favorable review of Clerks II. Thanks, folks!
  • Mike Portnoy, drummer for the prog/metal band Dream Theater gives Clerks II a shoutout in his “Hero of the Day” page on his website.

Kevin And “The Wayback Machine”…

August 2nd @ 9:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin birthday blogs today, looking back on the experience that would turn him into the filmmaker we all know and love today. Check out a piece from that entry right here:
Around nine at night, my friend and co-worker Vincent Pereira closed up R.S.T. Video for the evening and joined me at Quick Stop, to stock the milk and mop the floors before heading off. We got to talking about movies, as per usual, and I told him about a review I’d read in the Village Voice for a film called “Slacker” that was playing up at the Angelika Film Center, in New York City. This was a film we’d seen a trailer about a week or so prior, after Vincent and I had read about an Angelika midnight screening of “The Dark Backward” which Judd Nelson and Bill Paxton would be in attendance for and “Pig Newtons” (a prop food item that featured prominently in the flick) would be distributed at. The “Slacker” review talked about a scene in which Madonna’s pap smear was discussed, and that captured both of our imaginations. Since we two Jersey ‘burb boys had successfully gotten into and out of the city for the “Dark Backward” screening with our virtue intact once before, we decided to tempt fate with a second trip into the city that night, to check out this “Slacker” picture. And so, after closing up Quick Stop at 10:30pm, Vincent and I drove from Leonardo, NJ to the Angelika Theater on Houston in New York City to see a little movie from Austin, Texas.

This was the moment that changed my life forever.

Richard Linklater’s “Slacker”, you see, was the film that made me want to be a filmmaker too. As that flick unspooled before the wide eyes of a freshly minted twenty one year old version of me, possibility was first introduced into my sphere of influence. This film was at once remarkable and unremarkable, and I viewed it with a mixture of awe and arrogance.

Mallrats @ The Alamo!

August 2nd @ 9:28 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Eric Oliver

  • The beautiful and famous Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas will host a midnight screening of the awesome “Mallrats” this weekend, August 4th and 5th! It’s a very cool theater — A dinner and a movie kind of place where you can order all kinds of food and have a waiter, but get to see a flick on a full sized screen. Here’s the blurb straight from The Alamo Drafthouse newsletter:
“Don’t miss Kevin Smith’s Mallrats at midnight on August 4th and 5th. What better place is there to watch a couple of slackers drift through life than the Alamo Drafthouse? Plus, we can all agree that Ben Affleck plays his most believable role in Mallrats as a self involved mean spirited jackass. What more can you ask for? For more information check www.drafthouse.com. See you at the movies.”

“With the release of Clerks 2 and Kevin Smith’s birthday coming up on August 2nd, what better time is there to dust off one of Smith’s classic movies. That’s right, I’m talking about Mallrats.

Brodie Bruce, a Sega and comic book obsessed college student, and his best friend, TS Quint, are both dumped by their girlfriends on the same day, and to deal with their loss, they both go to the local mall. Along the way, they meet up with some friends, including Willam, a guy who stares at Magic Eye pictures, desperately trying to see the hidden image; Gwen, one of TS’s ex-girlfriends; and Jay & Silent Bob, of Clerks fame. Eventually, they decide to try and win back their significant others, and take care of their respective nemesises (TS’s girlfriend’s father, and a store clerk who hates the two for not having any shopping agenda).”

Here’s a direct link to the information, showtimes, and ticket purchase online for the Mallrats showings. Another reason to hate not living in Austin, for sure. This sounds like an event we wouldn’t miss if we were in the area. So if you are, be there!

  • Check out two snazzy new t-shirts, now for sale at the Stash, inspired by Clerks II — Randal’s “Count Cockula” tee, and Elias’s “RoboChrist” tee.
  • Catch the outstanding episode of ICONS: Kevin Smith, re-airing on Saturday, August 5th at 7:30pm and Sunday, August 6th at 5:30pm and 11:30pm only on G4 TV. One of the best retrospectives we’ve seen in a while.
  • The IMDB’s home page has a photo of Kevin in their “born today” frame on the front page. Happy Birthday, Kevin!
  • Will Ferrell, in character as Ricky Bobby (promoting his new film), was interviewed by NASCAR.COM and had this fun bit of business to say:
NASCAR.COM: … Umm yeah, moving on. Talladega Nights premiered this weekend. What were your thoughts on seeing your life story on the big screen?

Ricky Bobby: I don’t get out to the movies that much, but Bluntman and Chronic was blunt-tastic.

  • Still cleaning out some leftover Clerks II stuff from the files here: Today, some scans from local Philadelphia area papers on the flick, from the Inquirer and the Intelligencer — These came to us from none other than Chris’s GRANDMOTHER. How ’bout that huh?
  • The residents of the town of Canberra, Australia have something interesting going on: A petition they’ve started, trying to get Kevin Smith to come to their town. When word that the man is visiting Australia very soon for the Clerks II premiere broke out, the folks of Australia’s capital city thought, why not try and get him to visit? Check out the story on their website! You can also find a mention of the campaign in the Daily Telegraph this week (a Sydney based newspaper with a readership of 1,009,00), and in a short movie called “Comic Clerks” that was filmed for the campaign, uploaded to YouTube. We hope the folks will keep us posted, perhaps Kevin can stop by if he can work it into his schedule!

  • A website called Boxerjam.com put featured Kevin’s name in a word puzzle on their site today (for his birthday, perhaps?) Shots above.
  • The latest editon of MovieWeb’s “An Open Letter” column features a kind open letter to Kevin.
  • Kudos to Kevin Dilmore, writer of a new Star Trek novel, who appeared wearing a snazzy piece of clothing during a signing at Comic-Con.
  • And finally today, fans of the Clerks Cartoon may find this one fun.Bear is driving boat? How can that be? See ya next time!
