Kevin “At The Movies” Two More Weeks!

September 25th @ 11:49 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Edward Chen, John Whiteaker, Tom, Jacob, Jay, Buck C, John Hopkins, Richard Minter

  • Obviously a favorite for his honesty and likability, Kevin will return to co-host the popular “At The Movies” with Richard Roeper for the next TWO weekend editions of the program (starting with the weekend of Saturday, September 30th). The news first broke when Roeper ran down the list of next week’s films on the program this weekend, and mentioned that Kevin would be in to help review them. The flicks: “The Guardian”, “School for Scoundrels”, “The Queen” and “Open Season”. No word yet on the flicks for week two, though looking ahead, you can probably guess.

WSCH confirms the dates and for the more official, TV Guide also has the story. We’ll work on getting information, clips, and more up right here for ya following each episode, too. Check your local listings for date and time.

  • Check out Mewes in the horrofest “Feast” – Now showing in theaters for midnight screenings, and on DVD October 17th! We’ve been waiting for this one.
  • Ben Affleck talks “Hollywoodland” in this new NPR interview. You can check it out in Windows Media and Real Audio formats. He remains highly talked-about for his excellent portrayal of George Reeves in the film.

Clerks II Hits UK Theaters!

September 23rd @ 4:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Matt Booker, Vicki Ellis

  • Clerks II hits UK theaters this weekend, after a long wait from fans — We hope you’re all enjoying the film up on the big screen with an audience full of fans! The Thursday podcast of BBC program “Front Row” features a review of the film, if you care to listen to a British reviewer’s take.

In other UK Press, Kevin conducts a new interview with “Digital Spy” which features a mix of familiar and original questions. Here’s a sample:

You say you’re not mainstream, but so many people grew up watching your films – you’re a household name!

“It’s a weird position to be in, oddly enough I find that when it s time to promote a movie, it’s never a problem getting press, people are always willing to sit down and talk about it. There’s always far more press than interest in the actual movie, though. I’ve found over the years that the balance between press and how we do has completely shifted in the favour of press. I guess I’m well known for doing what I do, but I don’t think I’m as successful as I guess the press would lead one to believe – the inordinate amount of press you receive, you think ‘wow, the movies would do better’, but they always seem to play to the exact same audience. I’m more well known than the flicks, which is weird, as normally it’s vice versa. I’m normally out there shooting my mouth off, so I’m shocked as many people see our flicks as they do. I never expected them to go beyond that little area of New Jersey that I grew up in!”

UK’s “The Guardian” website posts a story on Kev and CLerks II titled “It’s Just Dudes Talking About Sex and Star Wars”, featuring new interview quotes. A snip from this one:

“You’d think right away that the fans would have been pleased when Clerks II was announced,” he continues. “But there was more trepidation than joy. I got a bunch of people going, ‘Don’t fuck it up, dude.’ Clerks gets called a cult classic, or the seminal indie film of the 1990s. But I didn’t set out to make that. I wanted to do a film in which the characters sat around talking about sex and Star Wars, just like my friends and I did, and made people laugh. For it to become what it did, and have all these cool but daunting labels attached to it, really clouded its original purpose. I watched Clerks the night before we started shooting Clerks II, and seeing it again demythologised it for me. I was, like, ‘Oh yeah – we didn’t make the seminal indie movie of the 1990s. It was just dudes talking about sex and Star Wars.’ It brought me back to what it was, and it cleared my head to do the sequel. My goal was never to make a film that was better than the original. I just wanted the two movies to stand shoulder-to-shoulder.”

Smith’s lack of ambition, which is reflected in Dante and Randal’s desire to simply stay put, can be traced back to his late father, who was employed for 30 years as a postal worker in Red Bank, New Jersey. “He wasn’t even delivering mail, he was cancelling stamps. He was the prime example of a guy who never felt he needed to make his mark professionally. He had that job so he could afford his real dreams – to get married and raise a family – and I always respected that. I think career and ambition are prized too much in our culture. Your job can’t be your whole life; your life has to be your family.”

And finally, FemaleFirst, another UK-based site, runs a blurb on Kevin’s jokes regarding daughter Harley’s language:

The ‘Clerks II’ filmmaker – who also stars in his films as the character Silent Bob – insists it is important daughter Harley Quinn learns these words when she is young so she will be able to come out with a string of expletives as an adult.

He told BANG Showbiz: “I’m already teaching her to curse because if she learns to does it well she can make a good living out of it.

If you’re in the UK — Get your butt into a theater and see Clerks II this weekend!

Kevin To Co-Teach Mobisode Class…

September 23rd @ 4:32 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Pat Schau

  • Here’s a cool piece of news — Kevin has come on board to co-teach a UCLA film class, who will produce a new mobisode series called “Sucks Less, with Kevin Smith”. Seems that students will be instructed by Kevin from the Stash in Westwood, where he’ll fill the students in on upcoming weekend events. The class will then write, shoot, and produce the entire series, which you can watch on mobile phones and mtvU.com. Kevin is on board to exec produce and mentor the students, but they’ll be doing all of the actual work to put the show together.

The full press release, courtesy of Reality TV Website:

SUCKS LESS, WITH KEVIN SMITH – mtvU is teaming up with UCLA’s renowned School of Theater, Film and Television, and iconoclastic director Kevin Smith, to free college students from the bane of weekend boredom. Smith will co-teach the first ever mobisode production class at UCLA, where the students write, shoot and produce the new mtvU series, “Sucks Less, with Kevin Smith.” The entire creative process will be documented via short form programming on mtvU’s on-air, online and mobile platforms. Hosted by Smith from his comic book shop in LA, the series will clue students in on the coolest #%@* happening over the upcoming weekend, including movies, video games, music and must-attend events around the country. The mobisodes will simultaneously premiere on Amp’d Mobile phones, mtvU and mtvU.com. Smith will executive produce and serve as mentor; students will be involved in every part of pre-production, production and post-production.

It’s a fun experiment, and one we’ll be sure to follow up with you on.

  • In an interesting tidbit taken from a recent interview with Bang Showbiz, Kevin reveals his desire to make the horror flick he’s planning very “gritty”:
…Smith also said his upcoming horror movie will be “in the style of ‘The Wicker Man’… the original ‘Wicker Man’… or ‘Let’s Scare Jessica To Death’” and wants it to be gritty “not a slick or polished film.”
  • The great Thaahum and Mattt Potter have teamed up again — This time it’s a video for his new View Askew song, this time playing off of the Joel Siegel / Kevin Smith battle over Clerks II this summer. As always, the song’s got a catchy beat and lyric, and Pottter cuts together another brilliant video, complete with an intro movie and everything. Check it out at these places: YouTube, MySpace, and Quicktime (Small).

Also, don’t miss Taahum’s new column, Keneteph’s Korner, over at our own QuickStopEntertainment.com! Nice work, guys.

  • Due to losing that lawsuit from the band “Supernova”, who appeared on the Clerks soundtrack, Tommy Lee’s new reality show band now has to record and tour under the way dumb name “Rock Star Supernova”. How silly.
  • Anyone catch Affleck on “The Daily Show” the other night? We hear someone yelled “Affleck was the BOMB In Phantoms!” after the initial applause died down when he came onstage. Gotta love it!
  • Slight countdown correction – The HD-DVD version of Clerks II will street the same day as the standard DVD release – November 28th, not December 11th as previously reported.

  • Some neat new swag spotted via the Diamond Previews page — A black “I’m Eating It” Clerks II shirt variant. As always we’ll let you know when stuff like this pops up for online Stash ordering, as well. If you haven’t been over there in a while, it’s worth skimming around just to see the amazing amount of coolness you can pick up for yourself or the View Askew fan in your life. Some great deals, too.

  • And finally today…When In Rome (Italy)…Go see CLERKS II, this September 29th! This billboard pic passed onto us via James Plumtree, who was on vacation there last week. Have a fantastic weekend, folks.

Few Tix Still Available For Clerks II/Evening Harder!

September 20th @ 9:26 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Tickets went on sale on Monday for the two amazing events in Hollywood to celebrate the arrival of Clerks II and Evening Harder on DVD — These events are at the awesome Cinespace, where you can eat, drink, and hang out with a bunch of fans — Oh, and did we mention Kevin Smith will be there, in person, as well? This is a much smaller, intimate event than a Thon, so we’re highly recommending you check it out. You’ll have lots more personal time to hang out with fellow fans and the man himself. Get your tickets NOW for both nights! Details are available there as well, or check our previous news for some FAQ. Both shows come with a free DVD (delivered after street date) and a night of fun with fans — And of course bragging rights to say you saw all these great extras well before the rest of the Askewniverse!

  • The original “Clerks” will be screened tomorrow (Thursday) in Sacramento, California at the UA Arden Fair as part of their “Flashback Films” series. Tickets are only $5. It screens at 10:00pm. Hope some fans can make it out to see this classic as originally intended — In a dark theater with a fun crowd!

  • Thanks to our loyal users, we’re very pleased to have the complete scans from the MAD Magazine “My Name Is Earl” parody. Click the cover and pages above to check out all the fun.
  • Jason Lee’s “My Name Is Earl” season one DVDs are now on the streets, and enjoying outstanding reviews. Check out DVD Talk as well as Newsday for examples of this, screenshots, and more. It’s not View Askew, but it’s Jason Lee and we’re calling that a must-own. And did View Askew’s own Bryan Johnson really do the documentary for this set? Hmmm! Need more incentive? Check out a clip from the “Lost Pilot” extra at Amazon!
  • A finalist from the AOL Gold Rush game states that he’d most like to hang with Kevin of all the celebs out there:
If you were stranded on a desert island and had to bring a celebrity with you, who would it be? Why?

At this point, I would probably have to bring Kevin Smith because he and I share similar interests and I could probably sit and talk with him and not get bored in the conversation while we were out there.

  • And finally today, word has it that Kevin’s cameo in “Bottoms Up” is extended and runs in snippets from start to finish. We also hear Mewes holds his own as a leading man, though the flick itself suffers from Paris Hilton’s wooden acting and some bad editing. Check it out now for yourselves on DVD.
  • And don’t forget! Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is NOW OUT ON BLURAY. May be of interest for those of you with the latest expensive toys. And we’ll catch ya next time! Thanks for dropping by.

“Clerks II” Watching Party Added!

September 16th @ 2:03 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Those of you on the fence regarding a trip to Los Angeles may have just had your decisions made for you — There will now be back-to-back events at Cinespace to celebrate the DVD releases of Clerks II AND Evening Harder. Clerks II’s event has just been announced, and will take place Sunday, November 5th from 6 PM until Midnight. $55.37 gets you into that one. And then, the previously-announced “Evening Harder” watching party happening Monday, November 6th from 6 to midnight for $55.00 as well. Much like the Evening Harder event, attendees will receive a free signed Clerks II DVD with their purchase. Please note: You MUST buy tickets separately for each event. They will go on sale MONDAY exclusively for board members and readers of this website. We’re expecting a quick sell-out to both events (the free signed discs make the deal even sweeter). Kevin will be on-hand to host both events, perform Q&A, talk about the segments, and the like. Best of all, you’ll be seeing the stuff on these discs WEEKS before everyone else does. And of course, both events take place at the awesome Cinespace, so you can eat and drink all night long while the discs premiere.

Kevin posted full details as well as some FAQ on the shows, which we’ve got for ya right here:

1) There are 250 slots per night. Tix go on sale on Monday (offering ‘em up here first, to VA Boardies; after one week, any unsold tix get offered to the MySpace crew).

2) Entry fee to each event gets you a signed DVD, though not at the actual event itself. Once “Evening Harder” and “Clerks II” street, then you get your DVD (or DVD’s if you’re going to both events), which you can either pick up at the Stash, or have sent to you on street date..

3) If you’ve already ordered “Evening Harder” from the online Stash, you can’t cancel it to go to this (you’d be creating a nightmare for the online Stash folks). If you’ve already ordered “Evening Harder” from the Stash, AND you want to attend this, you’re gonna have two copies of “Evening Harder” (though, with Christmas coming, I imagine you can unload the second copy)..

4) No bitching about #3..

5) Cinespace also runs a bar and grill, so you can eat and drink while you watch four hours of “Evening Harder” (food and drink not included in entry fee)..

6) These events are gonna be pretty fucking cool/fun, and worth the trip for out-of-staters (I’m talking to you, East Coasters).

MINI-FAQ ANSWERS

Non board-members should hurry and sign up for the board this weekend, if you intend to bring them with you. All View Askew board members, old and new, take priority with ticket sales.

Two tickets per person is the maximum allowed purchase on Monday.

A poker game may be held for interested fans, with Kevin, on the Saturday before the Sun-Mon events.

Tickets will be sold exclusively through the online Stash.

The events are not over a weekend due to the impossibility to reserve a theater on popular attendance days. So these days were picked to make it as close to a weekend as possible.

These events will not likely be repeated on the east coast.

No other celebs are planned to be in attendance for the shows.

Tickets go on sale 10 AM EST this Monday.

We love this idea — Seeing all the stuff this early on a big screen, with Kevin and a room of fellow fans in attendance. It doesn’t get much better than that. We’ll have links and further information when these 2 shows go on sale this Monday. Don’t miss what’s set to be two of the best events yet. Wahoo!
