  • Looks like more work for Jason Lee during his Earl hiatus, another big screen project…This time, WITHOUT CGI (phew!). TV.com reports :
Earl goes back to the big screen

Jason Lee will film rock-and-roll comedy during show’s hiatus.

My Name Is Earl star Jason Lee is lined up to play as a rock star in the comedy Krater. The movie will film in May, during the actor’s hiatus from his hit show.

Krater takes place in the late-’70s/early-’80s music scene. It follows a rock band of the same name that finds its success in jeopardy after the band’s lead singer reveals secret desires to be a Broadway star.

Lee is also coproducing the film.

Lee previously played as a member of the fictional rock band Stillwater in 2000’s Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous. The actor will next be heard as the voice of Underdog in a film adaptation of the beloved 1960s cartoon.

My Name Is Earl won two Emmys this year. The show, along with The Office, has helped NBC revive its flagging Thursday-night comedy-block fortunes.

Several real-life rock singers have made the transition to the Great White Way. Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach starred in the 2000 Broadway musical Jekyll and Hyde, and AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson says he is writing a musical about historical figure Helen of Troy.

  • There’s a cheeky reference to the great “Death Star” debate from Clerks in the online comic strip “Candorville”. The subtle reference starts in this episode, continues into this one , then wraps up here.
  • Some View Askew mentions did indeed pop up on Chris Rock’s recent appearance on Bravo’s “Inside the Actor’s Studio”. He was asked about Dogma and he spoke about how he got the role, how much Chasing Amy affected him and talked up Kevin quite a bit. Check your local listings for rerun times, Bravo does show these things pretty often. If anyone sees the clippage available online anywhere, do let us know.

Brodie and the Chipmunks…

March 10th @ 1:57 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Greg Andrew, Greg Trawinski, Jeremy Merritt, Belinda, Steve Bauer, Richard Drees

  • In an odd unexpected turn of events, the big week-ending news is that Jason Lee has taken on the lead role of David Seville in the upcoming “Alvin and the Chipmunks” film which will blend live action with CGI. With his Underdog role, will he be the new king of CGI flicks? There’s quite a bit of press floating around on this one, though Empire Online says it pretty well:
Jason Lee Is A Chipmunk!Well, he’s going to hang out with them.

His luxuriant moustache has been known to make grown dictators weep with envy. His penchant for odd children’s names (Pilot Inspektor anyone?) is the envy of celebrity parents the world over. And he still hasn’t played Fletch, despite Kevin Smith’s best efforts. But Jason Lee, lately of My Name Is Earl fame, is about to face his biggest challenge yet, as he signs on to star in Alvin And The Chipmunks.

Yup, the skateboarding star will be playing the Chipmunks’ adoptive father David Seville in the live-action / CG version of the cartoon classic. He’ll be attempting to control the three harmony-singing, helium-voiced, pint-size critters as Simon, Alvin and Theodore make his life a misery (but, y’know, probably he’d be lost without them and will realise that by the end of the film).

Production begins on the film on March 28 for a Christmas release on December 14, and given that director Tim Hill also wrote Garfield 2 expect this not to be a million miles away from that effort, although we hope that Hill’s work on Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie comes more to the fore.

In the meantime, we could get a chance to hear Lee’s dulcet tones in the most exciting film of this or any year, Underdog, in which he plays a superdog (check out the trailer here), due out here in August.

Other reports : The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Cinematical.

  • We recently announced that Rotten Tomatoes awarded Clerks II as the 9th best reviewed comedy of the year. Now, the site has honored the film in two other categories as well. The film won Golden Tomatoes for number 41 in the top 50 Best Reviewed Films of the Year, and also Number 12 in the 50 Best audience-rated flicks in the User Awards.
  • Catch & Release will be released on DVD May 8th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. No specs yet, but stay tuned. We’re hoping they’ll include some nice extras.
  • As many fans in the comic book world know, Marvel has killed off the iconic character of Captain America in a new issue. Newsweek talked to Joe Quesada and Stan Lee about this surprising event in one of the better articles we’ve seen on this major event.
  • We don’t have a scan (do you?) but we’re told that on page 22 of the latest issue of the magazine “Mental Floss”, an article called “Split Ends/Alternative Endings You Ought to Know” it mentions the two different endings of Clerks and why the original was changed. If anyone has a transcription or a scan for the archives, let us know.

  • We’re totally digging the latest multimedia venture of Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, SModcast, and missed it when it didn’t come up last week. Join the streaming fun for yourself and check out Kevin’s summary of this week’s fun-filled episode:
SModcast 4: Can I Get a (Masturbatory) Witness?

In which our heroes talk results, regrets, and rejoicements in relation to the Academy Awards, name-drop Scorcese like it’ll get ‘em laid, struggle to remember Illeana Douglas’ name, reminisce about celebrity sightings and marvel over the need of the famous to eat, crack on “Krull”, ruminate on the men they’d concede to being rump-wrangled by, reveal the secret origin of Mos’ middle initial, talk mysticism, Indian fakirs and Jesus’ junk, bitch about why “In Search Of…” would never work in the age of the internet, discuss Mos’ directorial aspirations, and unmask Kev’s deepest shame (of the week).

As always, the podcast is linked up FREE OF CHARGE via Kevin’s Myspace blog, Silent Bob Speaks, and directly over at Movie Poop Shoot, the home of SModcast.
