Even More “Aint It Cool” Love For “Zack And Miri”!

  • Notoriously known as one of the tougher sites out there for film reviews, run by people, for the people, “Aint it Cool News” is not always the site to expect praise from — However, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” continues to enjoy overwhelmingly positive reviews from many of the site’s critics. This latest one comes from “Moriarty” who caught a recent screening at Fantastic Fest. The full review has some spoilers here and there, so read at your own risk, but our snippet here is safe on your eyes:

Based on the evidence of ZACK & MIRI MAKE A PORNO, I’d say Kevin’s sense of humor overall is in fine form these days. It’s one of the most engaging films he’s ever made, and it marks some real growth for him as a filmmaker. I know many people who feel that CHASING AMY is the best film he’s made, but that movie’s always struck me as immature, full of observations about relationships made from expectation more than experience. This film, though, offers up some genuine hard-earned insight into the relationships that are important to us, and the choices that define us. Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks make enormously appealing leads, and they have gentle genuine chemistry.

Read the rest over at Aint It Cool News, only minor spoilers with a few small details as the reviewer rates other performances in the film, as well as some detail on the pre and post-show antics from Kev (some of which you’ve seen online here in video form).

  • In this Youtube clip from the always enjoyable Jimmy Kimmel show (a show we actually paid a visit to during our last stop in Los Angeles for a View Askew trip), the lovely Rosario Dawson, there to promote “Eagle Eye”, cites her work in “Clerks II” as a big help, due to Kevin’s “do it again, but faster” approach to dialogue. Look around the 6 minute mark for the mention.
  • Killer Film celebrates the release of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” this month with a month-long tribute to Kevin in their features area. Look for an article on “Clerks” and much more to come as the month goes on. Nice little site they’ve got over there. Check it out.
  • This Thursday (the 9th), the FX network will debut their new comedy titled “Testees”. The entire premiere is being presented by “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”, so plan to tune in and look for some major promo for the flick. We’ve been meaning to watch “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” which we hear is great, so this should be a good companion show and another reason to tune in. The show will focus on two 30-something guys who work as test subjects, testing a new product/medication/etc each episode. Should be fun.
  • Many folks at film fansite Film-411 are highly anticipating “Porno” as their most anticipated of the month. See the bottom of page two for all the site’s columnists comments, for the most part very positive, summing up the film as their selected “hit of the month”.

Rumor: Full Length “Zack & Miri” Doc?

October 2nd @ 7:25 am | 1 Comment » | Scooped by George Efta

  • The IMDB sometimes can get rumors out of control, other times it can be a neat window into projects that are coming WAY in advance. So, this latest entry has our interest a bit. “Snowball Effect” and “Clerks 2” documentarians Zak Knutson and Joey Figueroa are mentioned as the directors of a documentary titled “Perversion for Profit”, the making of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”, with a 2009 release date. Previously, we’ve heard about “Money Shots” being the title for some web shorts that, much like the “Train Wreck” shorts to promote “Clerks II”, would hit the net to promote the film. Now, with not a peep about that stuff anymore, we’re betting the guys are saving everything for this doc, which will likely be a full-length thing saved for the eventual DVD or perhaps even another avenue. Boy, would we ever like to see it debut at a Vulgarthon type event in 2009.

We’ll keep you posted on what we can tell you regarding this project – The guys are regular readers of the site, so maybe there’s more they can offer up to us (if they’re able) – Zak, Joey, whatcha got?

Kev’s At Woodstock This Weekend!

  • Don’t forget, Kevin will be on hand to present “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and receive an award at the Woodstock Film Festival in New York this weekend. Yahoo News reports:

Annual Woodstock Film Festival kicks off this week

WOODSTOCK, N.Y. – The ninth annual Woodstock Film Festival this week will feature appearances by filmmaker Kevin Smith, ’60s troubadour Donovan and more than 120 films.

The festival runs Wednesday through Sunday at venues in Woodstock and nearby Kingston, Rosendale and Rhinebeck. Honorary awards will be presented to Smith, cinematographer Haskell Wexler and veteran writer-producer James Schamus, chief executive officer of Focus Features.

Festival director Meira Blaustein said 124 films will be screened this year, about half of them full-length features and documentaries. She said participants will be coming to this famous artists’ colony north of New York City from all over the world.

“This area is going to be buzzing with filmmakers,” she said.

Smith’s new movie, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” will be featured on closing night. Opening night will feature “Pride and Glory,” “Happy-Go-Lucky” and “Flash of Genius.”

In a nod to Woodstock’s history and the eponymous 1969 concert, the festival routinely features music along with the movies. Donovan, best known for ’60s standards like “Mellow Yellow,” will perform and appear on a panel. Bela Fleck will perform in an opening-night concert with Abigail Washburn and The Sparrow Quartet.

For the first time, the festival is opening its awards ceremony to the public. The admission fee for the ceremony and after-party is $50.

Sounds like $50 quite well spent to us – For those of you who attend any of the festival events this weekend, we’d love to hear from you.

  • The Count Basie Theatre recently conducted an audience poll for the best 50 shows they’ve ever put on. Kevin’s historic 37th birthday Q&A showed up, as did an ’03 appearance by George Carlin. See their article for full details. Kevin returns for what’s sure to be another fantastic night on Friday, November 7th, at 7:00 PM.
  • Brandon Routh was recently in his home state of Iowa, and the local paper (Des Moines Register) ran an article on him and mentioned his next movie being “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”:

“Routh’s next movie, to be released Oct. 31, is “Zack and Mari Make a Porno,” in which he plays the boyfriend of a gay porn star. He said the movie is a bit raunchy.

“It’s a very funny film and actually very heartwarming,” Routh said.”

  • Last update, we mentioned Jay Mewes’ appearance this weekend at the Mid Ohio Comic Con. We now have a few more details – Jay will be there BOTH days of the show (Saturday AND Sunday), and also participate in an interview with a moderator followed by an audience Q&A. You should be able to catch him at other events and on the floor signing all weekend as well. Definitely worth a trip in for that, folks.

Check out a few photos a fan took from a recent Mewes appearance to get an idea.

  • The hilarious Good Will Hunting sequel created for “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” makes another list today, appearing in Cinematical’s Top Seven Movies Within Movies:

Along the same lines as the uber-crappy sequels that pop up in Cecil B. Demented, Kevin Smith gives Ben and Matt’s flick some sequel action under the uninterested eye of Gus Van Sant. Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season awards Matt Damon with the chance to blow away rich, jerky smarty pantses rather than wasting his time in a battle of wits. It’s an all-too-brief moment, but worth Jay and Silent Bob’s trip.

Honorable Mention in Film: Bluntman and Chronic with Mark Hamill.

  • We hope everyone’s signed up and registered to vote next month — Yep, it’s coming up THAT fast.
