I have finished writing the “Spider-Man/Black Cat: Evil That Men Do” mini-series.
For those of you who’re new (or don’t follow comics), this is a mini series I started writing back in 2001. I turned in script for issue three back in September of 2002.
But as of a few moments ago, I just forwarded the script to issue six to Axel at Marvel. It’s done.
And while I have zero defense for my lateness (particularly when folks like Bendis turn out great stories in multiple books on a monthly basis), I will say this: it’s a much better story now that it would’ve been had I completed it back in ‘02. But judge that for yourselves when it comes out (or don’t; believe me – I’d understand if folks were like “Fuck him for making me wait three years. I ain’t buying it.”).
Terry Dodson is done drawing issue four, and is well into issue five. Don’t know when this puts the book on track for, but my guess is by year’s end, or Jan. ‘06.
Anyway, just thought I’d share that. Thanks, all, for your patience.
One down, one to go! Once Kevin finishes “Target”, we’re hoping he might be inspired to take up another comics run somewhere — We miss seeing regularly-scripted books coming from the guy.

Success is in the details. At least according to My Name Is Earl star Jason Lee. To nail his first TV role as a slacker who seeks redemption, his facial hair had to be just right.
“We tried a Fu Manchu, but they thought I looked a little too shady,” Lee says. “So we shaved the Fu Man and left Tom Selleck.”

Earl is the protagonist of a Tuesday night comedy, ”My Name Is Earl,” set to debut this fall. It stars Jason Lee as a crook who wins the lottery and begins to do good deeds.
Kevin Reilly, NBC’s president of entertainment, told attendees at the Television Critics Association summer conference here yesterday that ”My Name Is Earl” has tested higher among focus groups than any other NBC show in 15 years, including ”Friends.”

Greg Garcia, the creator of ”My Name Is Earl,” said his aim for the show is to get people emotionally invested in the character, a lovable man who tends to attract misfortune. ”I’m concentrating on finding big, funny moments people will talk about the next day,” he said.
In the pilot episode, for example, Earl, who is rather down on his luck financially, jumps for joy after winning $100,000 on a scratch ticket. He runs into the street, only to be hit by a car. As he lays on the ground, he watches his lottery ticket blow away.
Garcia pitched the show to Fox in 2003, but the network passed. ”They didn’t feel it could be a series,” he says. NBC, however, was sold.
Reilly certainly has a lot riding on ”Earl,” as well as on the other new programs.
Congrats, Lee. It’s the only sitcom, aside from the brilliant Arrested Development, we think’s gonna be worth watching this Fall.
Also, TVShowsOnDVD broke a nice story late today — The cover art and full specs of the “Jay & Silent Bob Do Degrassi” DVD, which is apparently coming in TWO VERSIONS, including an UNCENSORED ONE! COOOOOOL. Check out that cover, with the thumbs-up from Kevin reading “Contains coarse and explicit language. In other words, everything you’d expect from a Kevin Smith DVD”. Gotta love it!

Kelly, best known for writing and directing the offbeat supernatural drama Donnie Darko, did eventually divulge some general details about the film, which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Seann Willam Scott (The Dukes of Hazzard), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (The Scorpion King) and Kevin Smith (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back). “It’s set in the year 2008 over Fourth of July weekend,” Kelly said. “There’s a T.S. Eliot poem called The Hollow Men, where at the end of the poem, the last three lines are, ‘This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but … a whimper.’ A movie starring The Rock can’t end the world with a whimper. It needs to end with a bang. So that’s what the movie’s about.”
After years of preparation, Southland Tales is just four weeks away from shooting. Kelly said that one of the reasons the film took so long to go into production is because of the unusual sensibilities of his writing, which make his work difficult to categorize. “It’s stuff that doesn’t fit the parameters of what the studios are looking to do,” he said. “So it took a long time to push this through the system. If this one doesn’t make money I’ll just have to go and sell out and do something more commercial, because this has just been a bitch to get off the ground.”
Speaking of SciFi Channel…If you’re not watching Battlestar Galactica, you should be. Damn good show.
Lee’s also the champ on a new VH-1 show called “Awesomely Wacky Celebrity Baby Names”. He was #1! It’ll be re-run on:
