- We’re getting reports that Kevin has been announced as a guest at the “2008 Wildwood Film By The Sea” Film Festival in Wildwood, New Jersey. Unfortunately, those reports are false (despite him being listed at the website. Kevin will NOT be attending this festival. You can always look to the right sidebar of News Askew for a complete, accurate list of upcoming appearances from Kevin and other crew Askew.
- Empire Magazine runs a very cool “Guess The Movie Poster Letter” game this week, and we’ve spotted at least one of the letters to be from a View Askew flick from the past. Can you find it???
- Empire also continues to prove their coolness by running a fantastic piece on the 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters of all time. Kevin scores a mention with the (possibly ironically) mentioned “Daredevil” coming in at number…37!!!
- And hey, while we’re on the theme of lists, IGN scores a BIG win, yes, the #1 spot, in their top 10 “Movies within Movies” rundown. Yep – Applesauce, bitch:
1. Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back)
In retrospect Good Will Hunting was an over-earnest bore, but at least its stars and writers Matt Damon and Ben Affleck had the good grace to parody their Oscar-winning effort for Kevin Smith. “Think about the paycheck” says Damon to Affleck on set, whilst Guus Van Sant counts a huge wedge of cash. As with the first movie, Damon has his knowledge of southern colonies questioned, only this time is retort is not an intellectual comeback, but blowing the guy away with a shotgun. “It’s hunting season! Apple Sauce Bitch!” - The creator of the hacker convention, Defcon, seems like he might be a View Askew fan, striking a very familiar pose in the last photo of this Wired article.
- Wanna see a cool scan? In Australia, they’re relasing a DVD 2-pack featuring “Chasing Amy” along with “Slacker” — Yep, arguably one of Kevin’s best along with the film that inspired him to get into the biz in the first place! A very cool pairing, we must say.
- Finally today, worth a quick look, the IMDB have added a few shots from the San Diego “Zack And Miri” panel to their stills page for the film. Catch ya again soon! Thanks for stopping on by News Askew today.

- The first season of “Reaper” the hilarious, entertaining CW show which Kevin acts as consultant on (and did his first TV directing gig for) debuts on DVD November 4th in a 5 disc set. TVShowsonDVD has the announcement but sadly no details yet on any bonus material (we’d sure love to hear a running commentary track from Kevin with some of the cast or crew on the pilot or other episodes):
Lionsgate Entertainment has struck a deal with Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment to release several of Disney’s TV titles on DVD, starting this Fall. Among their first few releases will be Reaper – Season 1. It arrives in stores on November 4th, as a 5-DVD set with 18 episodes, plus exclusive bonus material. Total running time on this release, timed to debut near the second season broadcast start on The CW Network, is listed as 800 minutes, with a price of $39.98 SRP. The show stars Bret Harrison (The Loop), Ray Wise (Twin Peaks) and Missy Peregrym (Heroes). Package art isn’t available yet, nor details on the bonus material, but stay tuned and we’ll keep you updated!
If we hear more details, we’ll let ya know, of course. - Celebrating the release of “Pineapple Express” (which had a very successful opening yesterday, by the way, congrats Rogen!), Jay and Silent Bob show up at number 3 on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of “15 Memorable Movie Stoners”.
- Film 411 cites “Dogma”‘s use of the song “Candy Girl” as a top use of a track in the movies.
- For those of you who hate scans, you can also read Wizard’s excellent “Marvel Knights: Ten Years Later” piece over at their website. We ran scans of this as they appeared in the issue as part of our last site update.
- Catch Askewers Sean William Scott and Elizabeth Banks in the trailer for the upcomign flick “Role Models” at the MTV Movies Blog site. It’s under the left pane under “new video” (no direct link right now, sorry). Looks like a fun one.

- The video bandwagon continues on! Though the quality is pretty poor, those of you interested to see footage from some of San Diego’s “Zack & Miri” panel can find it via this YouTube Channel. We hear there’s a few spoilers peppered into the discussions, so be wary when streaming it up. You’ll need to scroll through the videos list at the bottom to find the segments, which are brief and chopped up.
- A better video from the Con comes to us courtesy our beloved G4TV, where their correspondent caught up with some of the “Zack And Miri” cast, including the always hilarious Jason Mewes.
- You want MORE video? Okay, one more topic for the day – More from last week’s historical “Spaced” signing at Stash West last week. Check out Mahalo Daily’s segment on the event, along with Spaced Invasion’s own coverage. All feature looks at the celebs, the fans, the great store, and fun interviews. Don’t miss both. We’re hoping to soon have some high res photos from the event, as our pal Albert Ortega was on the scene doing his professional photo work. Stay tuned.
- Cracked Magazine employs a photo of Jay & Bob in their article on “The 8 Most Bizarre Patron Saints”.
- Marilyn Ghigloitti thanks all the fans who stopped by to see her short film screen in San Diego last Sunday. Also, check out a flick she keyed hair and makeup on, “The Adventures of Johnny Tao”, starring Jason London (yep, Jeremy’s brother). Unfortunately, she can’t make the signing for her new film “Dead and Gone” next Saturday, August 9th, but she wanted fans to know that she pre-signed some discs and that the rest of the cast and crew listed will be on hand in Burbank. See ya soon!
The “Spaced” Signing…Is OVER!!!!
- We can now at least let the jealousy end, as we can no longer pine for attending the “Spaced” signing which took place at Stash West inside Laser Blazer on Wednesday. Were you there? Have a blast? Meet the gang? Talk Back and let us know, especially if you’ve got some good stories or photos. The line wrapped around the block yet all who waited patiently left with signatures. We hope you all took our advice and got a nice spot in line to avoid a long wait. Everyone headed over to the Arclight theater for a post-signing screening last evening.
Along with the “Spaced” gang, Kevin hits the con in San Diego this weekend, you can hear he and Scott chat about all his upcoming panels arouns 6 minutes into SModcast #58 this week. Kevin does a panel Thursday, 2 on Friday (one being his very own, where the first live footage of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” may be seen), and a final star-studded event on Saturday. Whew! We’ll of course have the full dish on the panels and other events at San Diego as they come in — We swear, one of these years we’ll figure out a way to snag press passes and get the heck out there! Keep your eyes open for a weekend wrapup as reports from the con hit the News Askew desk. If you’re there, or were there, don’t forget to drop your old pals Brad & Chris a line and let us know what’s up.

“Spaced” Signing Just Two Short Days Away!
- The big “Spaced” event at Laser Blazer and Stash West is just two days away, and our jealousy grows with every passing minute on having to miss it. The DVD release has been nabbing a ton of press, including an extensive article from LA Weekly along with a printed version of the ad. What’s that translate to? Even BIGGER waiting lines! We’re telling you, get there EARLY on Wednesday! There’s rumors going around that the signing may run a little longer than expected, which is good for those that line up, but we’re still going to bet on the line being cut at some point, as the group does need to make it over the Arclight for an appearance later in the day. So please, if you miss your chance, don’t complain to us — We’re warning you, reserve your spot and don’t miss your chance to meet these modern legends, some of the funniest and most creative in the biz.
The “Spaced” Signing And Arclight Q&A Is Coming!
- With just a little over a week away until what we think is the coolest event EVER at Laser Blazer and the Secret Stash, the signing of the fantastic new “Spaced” DVD with Kevin and the show’s cast and crew, we want to remind you — GET THERE EARLY. We expect a massive turnout for this event. Not only that, for those of you looking for a Kevin Smith autograph in person, and coming in for the San Diego Con, this may be YOUR ONLY CHANCE! Last year, Kevin’s busy schedule had him at so many panels, there was not time for a formal signing. So, we strongly urge you to line up at Laser Blazer and the Stash, get that fantastic “Spaced” DVD, and meet Kevin and the crew on the 23rd next week. Then, write us to rub it in and make us even more jealous. We look forward to hearing from you — Get there early and have a fantastic day, and be sure to give yourself extra time to walk around the coolest DVD, comic, and fanboy store in the country.

“SPACED” At Laser Blazer/Stash West – Smith, Wright, Pegg, Hynes! July 23rd!
- EDITORIAL UPDATE: We just confirmed that Laser Blazer has FULLY STOCKED UP with copies of Shawn of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Hot Fuzz SE, and ALL of Kevin’s films on DVD for immediate purchase and signatures! The Stash is also TOTALLY stocked with the latest swag, including those awesome Monroeville jerseys and so much more. Meet some legends AND do some shopping, this is a perfect chance to stock up for you or your pals.
We’re such massive fans of the work of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg, words cannot express how cool this upcoming event at Secret Stash West inside Lazer Blaser is — But we’ll try. “Spaced” was the first creative effort of stars and creators Jessica Hynes, Simon Pegg, and Edgar Wright — Wright and Pegg went on to create quite possibly the best horror comedy ever, and easily one of the best of this decade so far, “Shaun of the Dead” in 2004. In 2007, the duo returned for cop buddy comedy “Hot Fuzz”, once again twisting a new genre on its ear in a unique way. We recently LOVED the “Don’t” trailer that bridged the two “Grindhouse” flicks, which the guys also hand a hand in.
However, we owe it all to “Spaced”, which ran in the UK back in 1999 and 2001 for an all-too-short 14 episodes (the British know how to keep fans wanting more). The show was fanboy love personified in its characters, all memorable, making for a one-of-a-kind show that nothing has come close to touching since (an American remake was briefly thought of, but without the blessing of Wright, Pegg, or Hynes, put down). The show is one of our all-time favorites, and now, thankfully, coming to American DVD (previously only available on UK imports). “Spaced: The Complete Series” collects every single episode along with a boatload of extras, including commentary from our own Kevin Smith.
Sold yet? You gotta have the DVD, sure, but we’ll do ya one better – On Wedesnday, July 23rd, from 12:30 til 2:30, all 3 stars/creators, Hynes, Pegg, and Wright, will join Kevin live, in person, at Secret Stash West and Laser Blazer, the greatest DVD/Video and Comic Book shop in all the land. They’ll all be signing copies of the new DVD for the bargain price of $49.98 – $10 off retail! That gets you the DVD and all 4 signatures! It’s extremely rare that this group will sit together in a room for an event like this again, so we’re telling you know — Get to Laser Blazer, tell your boss you need the day off, whatever it takes. Don’t miss this event, and line up early! If you’re coming to town for ComiCon, this happens RIGHT BEFORE IT. Perfect timing.
Oh and by the way, want anything else signed? You can have up to 3 items signed, but that’s it — Gotta keep the line moving — So bring them along if ya like. But you MUST purchase the “Spaced” DVD to get into the event. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY! We’re telling ya now. Full details on the disc:

* The line may be capped at any time. PLEASE ARRIVE EARLY!!
* No more than three items signed per customer.
