  • Yesterday, we announced that Kevin will receive the “Vision Award” from the Filmmakers Alliance on August 20th. They’ve now added the following details to their site:

Kevin Smith: 2008 Vision Award Recipient

Kevin Smith is, quite simply, an indie film icon – having helped spawn an entire generation of DIY filmmakers with his first feature, Clerks. And although its success has brought him uncomfortably close to Hollywood’s orbit, he has always maintained a defiant individuality and endearing unconventionality. However, his contribution to independent film extends beyond his own filmmaking work, including Executive Producing the documentaries, Reel Paradise and Small Town Gay Bar, as well as four $40,000 features, A Better Place, Drawing Flies, Big Helium Dog, and Vulgar.

Filmmakers Alliance is proud to recognize this outspoken iconoclast for his singular body of work and his commitment and contribution to truly independent filmmaking.

And we are very proud to send our heartiest congrats to Kevin for this outstanding honor.

  • Photos from a recent charity Bingo night event that Kevin hosted on behalf of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer are up over at Flickr. Click and watch the caller and happy contestants.
  • And of course, don’t forget SModcast, back on its regular schedule this week with Episode #61:

      SModcast 61: “Bridge Beach!”

In which our heroes dream of private tutoring, catalogue questionable laws, survive a star cros’t love affair, rally against lawn art, and unwittingly seduce a funny-book merchant.

  • SModcast #60 returns after a week off for San Diego, and Kevin (this week along with special guests Walt and Bryan) once again has prepared a fantastic and free program for you…We also believe the running time’s a record breaker, coming it at 1:06. Download it for free exclusively at Quick Stop Entertainment and listen to the fun of three friends hanging out in a room, chatting it up about pretty much anything that comes to mind. Here’s the cryptic logline for the week:

      SModcast 60: The Clone War

In which our heroes marvel over Pillow Babies, thwart an attack by Stalin’s man-apes, and face off over the love of a human Xerox.

Don’t miss SModcast, some of the very best entertainment the web has to offer, courtesy of View Askew Productions and our friends at cool stuff website ThinkGeek.

  • Playboy Magazine staffer Ron Motta beautifully recounts another recent “Spaced” signing event and has some kind words to tie it into the Askewniverse:

“Like Kevin Smith’s Clerks, Spaced captures perfectly where I was when I was in my mid-20s.”

The blog goes into detail on “Spaced” and its origins, and even reveals how a 3rd series of the popular program might have started. Worth reading, and of course DEFINITELY worth picking up a copy of from Laser Blazer online!

  • The 2 PM video finale of YouTube pheom “LonelyGirl15” features a classic “Mallrats” quote right at the start.
  • Wizard Magazine featured another fantastic piece on Daredevil and the rest of the “Marvel Knights” line as part of the anniversary — We’ve got a few more scans for your enjoyment above, featuring a new interview with those involved with the books. Again, we highly recommend you grab a copy of this month’s Wizard for your collection, especially if you’ve got all the Daredevil books.

  • In addition to the great Galactica clip above, we’ve got a ton of video for you in today’s edition of the ‘Bites. First up, one scooper has uncovered some never-before-seen footage from a Q&A that Kevin conducted in Melbourne, Australia a couple years back promoting the release of “Clerks II” . Thanks to Popcorn Taxi for the clippage.
  • One of our favorite mash-ups of recent memory – A fan has taken the dour sountrack from that awesome “Watchmen” teaser (that we hope you’ve by now seen and drooled over) and mashed it up into a new “Mallrats” trailer. Gotta love it. First, check out the Watchmen trailer over at the Apple Quicktime site, then move onto this one. Major kudos to the author!
  • The great JoBlo.com once again tosses up some View Askew coverage, with 2 brief interviews with stars Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogen conducted at last weekend’s Comic-Con. Banks reveals some background on the Miri character, and Rogen chats up NC-17 and the ever-popular adlib question. Looks like it’s rough to get to these folks, good on JoBlo for hanging with the press masses.
  • This week, the great “Reaper” finally premiered in South Africa – The Kevin Smith-directed pilot aired for the first time on TV there. If you’re in the country, be sure and tune on in.
  • Yes folks, get ready for a site that will crack you up though you didn’t know existed — Ok maybe ya did, and if so, shame on you. But no, seriously, the “Mamarazzi” website, which is, you guessed it, dedicated to celebrity cleavage, cites Rosario Dawson’s famous rooftop “Clerks II” dance as #3 in their countdown of the “The 10 Hottest Celebrity Boob Jiggling Videos”. God bless the internet.
  • And finally, a bit of News Askew Retro to end your day — Kevin and Joey Lauren Adams appeared on the MTV pick-up “Squirt TV” back in 1996 before they went off to make Chasing Amy. The gimmick was this was a public access type show that a young kid hosted in his actual bedroom. So, this dates back about 12 years now, and through the magic of YouTube, can now be watched online for the first time in News Askew history. Check out some retro, and enjoy. ‘Til next time…

  • For those of us not lucky enough to attend, Ron from Laser Blazer has taken video from last week’s huge “Spaced” DVD signing, placing 6 minutes of nicely edited footage of the event front and center on the site’s home page. Meet some of the fans who traveled from across the country to meet Edgar, Simon and Jessica, see the sprawling line, and of course, footage from inside the Secret Stash and Laser Blazer. As always, our man Ron’s got things nicely packaged with music, clips, montages, and more. Check out the inside of one of the coolest geek stores in all the land. Well worth your precious browser time. Enjoy.

Kevin @ Comic Con – All Your Coverage Right Here!

  • Kevin once again took to the San Diego Comic Con this weekend, where he participated in serveral panels and revealed the very first footage from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” on Saturday. The packed crowd were quit fortunate, as no footage from the movie has yet to be made available on the web. Kevin also appeared on a director’s panel and once again moderated the Battlestar Galactica panel, keeping quite busy at the biggest Con in all the land.

NBC Interviewed Kevin for a few minutes at the event, which we’ve got embedded above for your viewing pleasure. In it, he reveals they are looking to start shooting “Red State” early in 2009.

Here’s more coverage on Kevin’s antics from around the web:

…The “Zack and Miri” clip shown to the crowd of thousands featured a heated discussion between a gay couple played by Justin Long and Brandon Routh. Long’s character is a porn star who has appeared in various films with unprintable titles, and Zack (Seth Rogen) is fascinated.

Banks, who plays Miri, described the film as “a really sweet love story,” but Smith assured fans it was just as raunchy as any of his past flicks, including “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.”

The film is a departure visually, though, he said.

“Going into it I wanted it to look better than the stuff we’d done in the past. It kind of looks like a real movie,” Smith said. “The most important thing was how do you shoot sex because I’ve never done that before. … I wanted the sex to look much better than my sex.”

“You’re like the Miley Cyrus of porn!”

      — Kevin Smith, after finding out Traci Lords made her first porno when she was 15.

Lords just completed filming on Smith’s latest “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” which the the two are promoting at Comic-Con.

AUDIENCE QUESTION: As filmmakers, I wanted to ask who in the past or present as filmmakers have inspired you in your careers to get involved in this genre?

KEVIN SMITH: For me, it was likely Jim Jarmusch, Richard LInklater, Hal Hartley that made me want to get into indie film.

JUDD APATOW: Well, Kevin Smith laid down the track.

SMITH: Yes, b—-, yes. [Smith and Apatow hug.] Say that s— in print, motherf—er. I’m taking that into the studio, ‘You see what fucking Apatow said.’ Give me a job.

APATOW: But also Hal Ashby and Cameron Crowe…

      SMITH: F— those guys.

HW: Kevin Smith likes to write long passages of dialogue about his favorite films, what did he choose for this one?

SR: There was a big chunk where I talk about Clerks for like three pages. [laughs] We make fun of a lot of movie titles. There is a Sleeping with the Enemy moment.

“This show is so good that it’ll get you pregnant.”

And that’s what “Clerks” director and fanboy icon Kevin Smith brought to the “Battlestar Galactica” panel that he moderated Saturday. A bit of raunch, a scattering of F-bombs. And I don’t mean “frak.”

…moderator Kevin Smith, who introduced himself with his trademark coarse wit: “I have nothing to do with this show, which is probably why it is so f—ing good.” (No fraks for Mr. Smith.)

“So what’s up next for Smith? It looks like he’s still trying to find a home for his horror movie, Red State, deeply anticipated by fans but without a studio as of yet. After that, Smith grew a little tight-lipped, but hinted that it might be a movie set in space.”

And there ya have it! Space, eh? We’re thinking that “Ranger Danger” may come to be after “Red State”, though right now, all eyes are on “Zack & Miri”, which is 3 months away from theaters. Whoohoo!

SModcast #58 Reveals NC-17 Details!

July 24th @ 5:20 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • SModcast #58 kicked off this week with a surprise segment where Kevin and Scott talked about upcoming events, and actually revealed some of the first-ever dialogue on the ratings fight of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Typically, the SMod has been rather free of big news, saving it mostly for the web board or this site, but this one took us by surprise.

For the first time, Kevin and Scott revealed details about the current NC-17 rating for the new flick. After several attempts to make cuts, the guys accepted the rating of NC-17 and are now under the formal appeals process, as Kevin no longer has any cuts he wants to make. At the first screening, the film ran 1:45 and got the NC-17. Still having cuts to make anyway, Kevin knocked 12 minutes out, resubmitted, yet the MPAA deemed two scenes still too dirty for the “R”. One shot is a half a second (14 frames of film) and Kevin hates to take it out. It’s that good (but may also be the sticking point for the board).

Twice before, the guys have visited the MPAA for an “appeals screening”, for “Clerks”, “Jersey Girl”, and now, this one. The appeal happens THIS WEEKEND, so keep the guys in your prayers as they watch the film with the ratings board, and afterwards, gives a verbal appeal as to why they want the film to have an R. Pretty interesting, eh? Let’s wish the gang a lot of luck, as the third time is typically the charm — Though Kevin fears they’ll have the biggest fight they’ve yet faced. We’ll look forward to hearing the results of the screening from Kevin, and hope to see that “R” announcement in the next few days.

Wanna hear it for yourself, as the guys dish on the schedule, the rating, internet porn, and lots more? Grab SModcast #58 FREE FREE FREE exclusively over at Quick Stop Entertainment. Listen and enjoy. For those of you who like hearing Kevin dish on View Askew news, this one’s definitely for you.

  • Kevin is the guest on the latest issue of the excellent /film podcast (appropriately titled “/filmcast”), discussing “The Dark Knight”. The webmasters have been kind enough to post the entire cast, as well as JUST the Kevin segment for download. As a warning, Kevin DOES reveal spoilers for “The Dark Knight” in his chat, so listen only if you’ve already watched it, one of the greatest superhero/crime epics of our time.
  • Thanks to one of our commenters for letting us know that the quite cool Paste Magazine took notice of our story on the current NC-17 battle for “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Thanks, folks. If you’ve got a few web minutes to spare, go give their website a look.
  • A current poll at comingsoon.net (scroll down to the lower right of the screen) asks, among a long list, what flick folks are looking forward to hearing about at the San Diego Con this weekend. “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is one of the many choices, so if you’re looking forward to it, why not go and cast your vote?
  • The Rock & Shock Convention website reveals a new appearance for Jason Mewes and Brian O’Halloran — They’ll be attending this year’s convention at the DCU center in Worchester, Massachusetts on October 10, 11, and 12. That’s all the info we have so far, but we’ll dig in and see what else we can discover. Typically, both guys appear on all days of a con, so we’re betting you’ll have a chance to meet the guys and get some signatures.
  • Finally today, this just in — Another reason to hit the San Diego Con this weekend! Let’s face it, you probably by now know if you’re going already. We’ve just gotten word that “Clerks” star Marilyn Ghigliotti will be in the house for her first trip to the Con this Sunday. She’ll be attending the kids film festival portion for a short film she did for a friend that wrote and directed the piece. Here’s the info for Sunday:

      Program #4 — 1:30–2:30
      Short films for all ages
      Dig
      Gena Shaw
Misunderstood by her parents, quirky, 9-year-old Charlie White acts out in a way that at first seems defiant but ultimately changes her parents’ perspective of their daughter. (L) (11:00) (USA)

Marilyn loves to meet her fans and is always incredibly gracious. Stop by and say hello if you’re in the area on Sunday.

See ya back here soon with more news from this busy week and weekend.

  • Our story on the current NC-17 rating for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” raised some eyebrows – Cool flick site Cinemablend remains as optimistic as we are — We’re thinking the title alone had the MPAA gunning for the rating, and are hopeful for the appeal process to work in the favor of View Askew. We’ll keep ya posted. G4 TV’s The Feed also picked up the story and aired it on their network this week.
  • Video mashups on Youtube are all the rage these days — One fan used video from “Revenge of the Sith” and audio from “Clerks” to mash two memorable scenes together making a pretty strange little creation. Check it out.
  • It’s SModcast #56!

    • An open source comic company known as “Tornado Comics Presents” recently finished a covers competition, focusing one of their entries on a character called “The Replacement Devil”. They’re such huge fans of Kevin, they tell us the based the character off his likeness. For further details on their projects, pop by their website.
    • Another one of those LOLcats showed up with a “Clerks” theme — We still don’t really get these things, but fans tell us they’re all the rage. You go, kitties.
    • 411 salutes some of the great TV and film roles of George Carlin at the end of their recent column, citing both “Jersey Girl” and “Dogma”, and “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”. We especially like this well-worded praise for the oft-misunderstood “Jersey Girl”:

“I’ve always been a sucker for “daddy stories” and I think Affleck delivered a solid performance of a single dad trying his best to raise his daughter. It is Kevin Smith’s most sincere movie to date. George Carlin played Affleck’s dad and did a great job in the performance, weighing sincerity with exasperation at the actions of his son throughout the movie. He was great in the film, as should be expected. “

    • The Hollywood United Methodist Church will include “Dogma” as part of their “Finding Faith in Film” series this summer, on August 24th. No further details on the website, though we assume the films actually screen at the church’s location in Hollywood, CA.
    • Attention Australia! Seth Rogen will be doing an interview in your area with Rove this Sunday, July 6th. Rove is an Aussie chat show (Letterman-esque) which airs Sundays at 9 PM local time. Shows reach YouTube by the next day, so we’re hoping to have links to the video soon after it airs (we’re crossing our fingers for a “Zack & Miri” mention or two).
    • Brian O’Halloran’s new horror comedy “Brutal Massacre: A Comedy” screens at The Pioneer Theater in New York City throughout the month of July. The director, along with some of the cast and crew, will be in attendance for the first showing this Saturday, July 5th. We’ll have details on screenings in Texas and Los Angeles soon as well.
    • Last, but certainly not least, in case you need another reminder – SModcast #55 hit the net this week, with more of the best humor on the web in MP3 format. For your free, fast exclusive download, hit up Quick Stop Entertainment

        SModcast 55: Naked Butz –

In which our heroes get corny, analyze the father of American obesity, and get a shot of maturity.
