- We posted a story on this earlier this week, but it’s oddly disappeared into the internet abyss, so once again, in case you missed it — SModcast, the award-winning FREE podcast from Kevin Smith and special guest Walt Flanagan (sitting in for Scott Mosier), turned 50 on Monday, celebrating it’s 50th frakkin’ episode. And stronger than ever. Major congrats to the guys on this achievement, as keeping up with an effort like this, especially for absolutely no profit and just for the fan’s benefit, is certainly no small feat. Let’s take a look at the loglines for EPisode #50:
SModcast 50: Gnome Alone –In which our heroes relate ribald tales of corporate piracy, draw upon the scat games of the short and fantastical, discuss the first generation of hand-held games, and reminisce about the imaginary lengths a boy will go to in an effort to secure some free comic books.
As always, SModcast appears exclusively at our beloved Quick Stop Entertainment, and is just a free MP3 download away. Don’t miss it. Here’s to 50 more and then some, guys.

SModcast: The Return Continues…
- Hooray! Looks like Scott and Kev are back to their regular schedule, with a new SModcast arriving this week on schedule, one week since their trimphant return to the program following the completion of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. This week marks episode #46, with the big 5-0 milestone just a few short weeks away. Let’s take a look at the rundown:

SModcast Has Returned!!
- All rejoice, as the sting of Monday morning hurts a little less this morning, as the great SModcast has returned. For our new viewers, SModcast is an entertaining, free-flowing unscripted podcast from Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier. This episode is the first since completing filming on “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”. After recording a show early on after the first week on the set, the guys got so swamped with work (typically putting in around 20 hour) days, so recording the show became impossible. Now, that downtime is over, and the guys are back to form with another hilarious episode:
SModcast 45: The End of the SMod-fastIn which our heroes finally appease the hunger with chatter about where they’ve been, what they’d do if they were “Lost”, and how they ride their mellow.
Don’t miss the return of SModcast, available for immediate, free download exclusively at Quick Stop Entertainment. Also, a sidenote – For those of you who traditionally got the feed automatically via iTunes, that feed will no longer update until Friday. This is to allow faster downloading for those of you who want the show right away, and less slowage on Monday mornings when everyone was doing a direct download AND an iTunes download at the same time. Makes sense, right? Welcome back, Scott & Kevin!

- Remember when Kevin wrote a script for “Superman Lives”? Remember when Tim Burton was attached to direct and they were planning to use Kevin’s script as a basis? Well, comic site “Bam! Kapow!” has some concept artwork up from the project — Looks like it’s been there a while, we’ve just never seen it before. If you’re interested in seeing their takes on Supes, Doomsday, and Brainiac, click yourself on over.
- Wanna see that quick Patton Oswalt mention of Kevin from “The Tonight Show” that we brought up last update? We’ve got it now courtesy of the News Askew YouTube channel. Enjoy.
- And finally today, we’re not advocating the use of spray paint in public places, of course, but it does look like Clerks II has inspired one budding “artist” to make a mark — This photo comes to us from a couple walking in Lakeview Park in Oshawa, Ontario. Both were fans and couldn’t resist snapping a photo (NSFW). See ya next time…

- TV Guide Channel paid a visit to our beloved Laser Blazer/Secret Stash for a piece on the TV show “Lost”, shooting inside the store and giving you a look at just how HUGE the place is — Also take note of the way cool looking Secret Stash logo on the wall for the Stash area. Check it out on the left nagivation of the Laser Blazer homepage. Man, look at the SIZE of that place!
- Bullz-Eye has a fun new interview with Tyler Labine, star of the CW network’s “Reaper”, and cameo-holder in the upcoming “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Some very kind words for Kevin are dropped, including these:
-
“…I like the pilot, it’s shooting in Vancouver, I love Kevin Smith…just let me meet with him.” So I went there, we sat down, and we chain-smoked his bad menthol cigarettes, and he was, like, “I love you for it, man, as long as you don’t want to do a Jack Black impression.” And I was, like, “Dude, if I hear one more person say that to me in this town…” I said, “Look, me and you, we’re both fat and have beards. Does that mean we’re both Jack Black?” And he said, “I like you. Okay, let’s go.””
“…Kevin was such an open, collaborative guy that he would just sit behind the monitors and yell stuff for you to say, and you’d be, like, “Screw you, I’m gonna try this!” And then you could just say whatever, and it was almost like…as long as you could get a laugh and people were digging it, it could fly. And I love a set environment like that, where we can collaborate and the writers aren’t getting their backs up about their words or whatever.”
BE: Your Wikipedia entry mentions that you’re in “Zack and Miri Make A Porno.” I presume the “Reaper”/Kevin Smith connection is what got you into that.
TL: Yeah, he just e-mailed me and was, like, “Would you like to come out and play, sir?” And I was, like, “Could you be a little more specific, sir?” (laughs) He said, “Come out to Pittsburgh, shoot a couple days on my new movie.” And I’m, like, “Yeah! I’ll fucking be there, man!” So I went out there and shot a really great cameo scene that he put together for me, and he told me it was because I play the best drunk he’d ever seen.
The entire review is quite candid and good, so be sure to surf over to Bullz-Eye and check out the whole thing.
- Kevin is briefly quoted in this new L.A. Times article on the great John Hughes:
“He’s our generation’s J.D. Salinger,” says Smith, whose film “Dogma” shows its heroes, Jay and Silent Bob, on a pilgrimage to Shermer, Ill., a mythical town that only exists in Hughes’ films. “He touched a generation and then the dude checked out. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be doing what I do. Basically my stuff is just John Hughes films with four-letter words.” - A recent interview with the great Simon Pegg over at Aint It Cool reveals that Kevin Smith has recorded at least one commentary track along with him for the upcoming Region 1 release of the series “Spaced” on DVD. If you’ve yet to see the program, seek it out now or when the new discs arrive this July. It’s a brilliant show which ran for an all-too-short 2 brief UK seasons. Once we learn more details regarding Kevin’s involvement, we’ll be sure to let you know.
- Seth Rogen has a cameo in the upcoming Weinstein Co. flick “Fanboys”, which has a HUGE internet following. Check our Rogen’s scene in the trailer at this page which announces that we’ll see two very different versions of the film on the eventual DVD.
- Here’s a fun one to end the update today, courtesty of our News Askew YouTube Channel – Beowulf gets the Rifftrax treatment, and with it, a reference to “Jay & Silent Bob”. Enjoy!
- Ever since Will Ferrell, after playing “Marshal Willenholly” in “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” joined the cast of the new “Land of the Lost” movie, we’ve been intrigued. Now, JFXOnline has the first photos of Will in the lead role. Ferrell’s character name in J&SBSB, for the uninitiated, is a combination of the three lead characters on the original classic TV series (Marshall, Will, and Holly).

- Positive mentions for Seth Rogen as the “new toast of Hollywood” in press for “Horton Hears A Who” from BloggingStocks and Craig Daily Press. Rogen provides a voice for the film. One piece even likens his career to a potential Tom Hanks type path, where he’ll eventually transition from comedy into more serious fare.
- Thanks to the awesome JoBlo site for the kind shout out this week.
- Something tells us we ran this Superfriends/Mallrats mash-up video before, but a scooper sent it in, and we figure it’s funny enough to mention one more time in case you missed it. Really funny stuff, especially if, like us, you have fond memories of these old Justice League/Superfriends toons from back in the day. Enjoy, and we’ll see ya again shortly.
The Greatest View Askew Set Video EVER!
- We don’t think we have EVER seen a funnier video come from the set of a View Askew film — And that’s saying a lot, because you KNOW how classic the earlier Train Wreck and Jay & Bob documentary stuff was from back in the day. However, this time the gang have outdone themselves. Capitalizing on the success of the “I’m f***ing…” series which we’ve been mentioning (from Jimmy Kimmel), the cast and crew of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” have come together to do their own version/parody, that…incredibly, is FUNNIER than both of the previous versions combined. Yes, a spoof that even outdoes the original gags. It is THAT funny. So, we’re got a monumental day here, the first live footage from View Askew and the set, and wow, is it ever funny. If this is any indication of how good this cast is going to work onscreen, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” will be the funniest View Askew flick of all time. No question.
The video is streaming now EXCLUSIVELY over at Quick Stop Entertainment and bringing our poor server to its knees, so we apologize for the slowness (we share a computer, us and them, we’re cool like that). Watch here for stills and more, once our bandwidth comes back.
Best of all, the clip reveals, at the end, that it will indeed be the first of many clips to come from the site, another behind-the-scenes from Zack and Joey, the geniuses behind Chop Shop Entertainment. We can’t wait to see what these guys have pulled together this time. Waiting for the end of the shoot means more time to edit, so an even more slick, planned out series. How cool is that? The title? “Money Shots”. Oh yeah.
For now, sit back, and enjoy, “I’m F***ing Seth Rogen”, from the cast and crew of the Pittsburgh set.
