- Jason Lee’s early film effort “Weapons Of Mass Distraction” is finally out on DVD, as of August 30 after a previous delay of some type. It was originally supposed to street in June or thereabouts.
- And hey, how can we mention Lee without talking about “My Name Is Earl”? Did you put away your Mallrats DVD long enough to watch tonight? You’d better have! And in case you need more convincing, the Detriot Free Press says the show”…shines a bright and funny light on the human condition. It’s a keeper.”
- Some more interesting “Southland Tales” tidbits came up today — First, up, one of the film’s many stars, Sean William Scott (also an ex-Askewer), chats quite a bit about the film, in what we think is a must-read interview at Freeze Dried Movies. Here’s a few good clips from that one:
FDM: You said that Richard says each character has a point in the film, what’s your character’s point?
FDM: So what happens in 2008 when you see this film?
SWS: I don’t now what Richard wants me to talk about. He said I think you can assume there have been more terrorist attacks in America or enough of a threat to have a heightened security and it takes place in Los Angeles. We see that quite a bit in surveillance and around the city and stuff like that. A lot of things that are done lie people’s fingerprints as identification.
FDM: What’s your characters criminal background?
SWS: I don’t think we ever really get into it. The brother who is the actual police man is a bit mysterious. We know that he’s been involved in something that’s a little shady.
FDM: What are there names?
SWS: Roland Taverner and Ronald Taverner.
FDM: Which one’s the cop?
SWS: Ronald
FDM: They both have the shaved head look?
SWS: Yeah, they look exactly alike.
FDM: The set in the future, is there a lot of production design to extrapolate what it would look like in 2008?
SWS: It’s not ‘Blade Runner’, but there are some elements of Philip K Dick. There is a little bit about how people dress, it’s futuristic- the cars a little bit. A lot of it I haven’t seen, I just heard about. Its one of those movies with such a huge cast and so much is going on and such an ambitious schedule- it’s almost like a paid vacation for me, I only work like 14 days. Every day I come in it’s so much fun but there’s so much information that I’m going to see and be like ‘wow you guys did all that too!’ (laughs) It’s pretty specific, but it’s not like ‘Blade Runner’
SWS: (laughs) I don’t want to ruin it. I play a brother who is a cop and his twin brother who is a bit mysterious- he has amnesia, much like The Rock’s character. The brother only really remembers things from the last six days and he’s been pretty much been in control of this neo-Marxist group who are using him to pull off this big blackmail scam involving The Rock’s character. And he’s trying to piece things together as the movie goes along and he feels like he’s not being told the truth about who he is or what’s going on. Most of the movie the cop has been drugged and tied up until the end of the film.
FDM: Do you have any big action stunts?
SWS: I do at the end of the movie. What’s nice for me is I pay two characters that are kind of quiet. Everybody else has more crazy exciting roles. It’s nice for me to actual something that’s a little bit more subtle. Especially in a movie like this; I think it will be a really good film.
ALSO: Continuing Joblo.com‘s coverage of Southland Tales, the beginning article of a set visit to the new Richard Kelly movie. At the opening of the article author states:
“Last Friday I visited the set of Southland Tales with one simple goal: to find out just exactly what the film is about. Few projects are shrouded in more secrecy (and confusion) than Richard Kelly’s much-anticipated follow-up to his cult hit DONNIE DARKO….Unfortunately, I left the set at the end of the day more confused than ever. I do know that it isn’t a musical. And I’m pretty sure that there aren’t any bunnies in this one.”
What follows is an extremely entertaining interview with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in which he discusses his experience making the movie including his first impressions of the script and working with Richard Kelly. This will likely be a series of interviews with the enormous cast such as Joblo has done in the past.
The secrecy has been maintained and will continue to be as Mr. Johnson states later in the interview:
“It’s very secretive and kept under wraps….there are so many things in that script that only [Richard Kelly] can answer and only he can piece together. And a lot of it is left up to one’s interpretation.”

- Here’s one for the scrapbook – Lee, Affleck, and Garner at the Emmy awards on Sunday evening.
Rosario Dawson, whose performance in ALEXANDER is nothing short of brilliant, has signed on to star in a pair of movies for the new Weinstein Co. First up, Dawson will star in KILLSHOT, the Tarantino-produced flick that co-stars Diane Lane, Thomas Jane, Mickey Rourke and Johnny Knoxville. In the film Dawson will play the girlfriend of one of the gangsters pursuing a couple (Lane, Jane) trying to hide in the witness protection program. John Madden (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE) will direct the film starting in October. Dawson will then seque into a leading role in Kevin Smith’s PASSION OF THE CLERKS. Her details in that film are a little sketchy but one might assume she’d play a romantic interest for either of our two leads, Dante and Randal. CLERKS is scheduled to begin filming in Los Angeles in January. Dawson can be seen next this December in RENT. But seriously: go get ALEXANDER on DVD. Thank me later.
