Kevin’s Food Battle Continues…

February 21st @ 8:22 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • As promised, Kevin continues to fill us in on his ongoing battle to lose weight and avoid the food temptation with another blog entry this week. Here’s a clip:
So last week, on February 12th, I rolled into the doctor’s office and heaved my flabby folds onto the scale to discover I’d lost another five pounds. Very sweet – especially when the shed amount the week prior was merely a pound and a half. This brings the current total weight loss to 27 pounds since January 2nd. Not bad for a little over a month.

Then, the NY Post ran a piece on Page Six which made me realize how far I’ve got to go…

Nothing crushing, right? In terms of the Post’s Page Six, I got off light. Problem is, the story makes it sound like I started at 230 and I’m heading downwards from there. Lemme tell ya’ something: if I weight 230, I wouldn’t be blogging about losing weight; I’d be stuffing my fat maw with starches and sugars in a veritable orgy of food, glorious food. I dream of being 230. 230 is a months-away, pie-in-the-sky quasi-pipe-dream.

Congrats yet again to Kevin for fighting the good fight, it’s amazing progress so far.

SModcast Hits Week Three!

February 21st @ 8:22 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin and Scott return for week three of their compelling podcast, SModcast. This “ongoing conversation” between the two remains available EXCLUSIVELY at our own Quick Stop Entertainment webite or as a subscription via iTunes. Here’s the rundown for this week’s segment:
SModcast 3: Sex and Violence and Bathrobes.

In which our heroes plot to bilk the innocent out of a buck a pop, reminisce about an over-crowded condo, spend far too much time dreaming up the ultimate guest list, finally reveal the horrifying tale (tail?) of the Dog Fight, relive their own bloodiest battles, make with talk of a first handy, and recall a homoerotic adventure that finds two teens partially disrobing, strictly for the sake of boyhood shenanigans.

DOWNLOAD ALL 51 MINUTES RIGHT HERE! Why the fuck not? It’s free.(Now you can also subscribe to SModcast via iTunes.)

We’ve become addicted to the ‘cast and can’t believe how fast the runtime flies by week after week. We know you’ll love it to. The latest episode, as well as the two debut episodes, remain available free and always at Quick Stop Entertainment. Let’s hope the duo can keep this pace up for a long long time.

  • Holy ripoff, Batman! Take a peek at this DVD cover for the 1995 Nicole Eggert movie “SECRET SINS”. Wonder which movie of Kevin’s they got the silhouette in the cover art from?
  • Huge congrats to View Askew composer Jim Venable who just won his 4th Annie Award (along with Jennifer Remington who is accepting the award for both of them in this video. They won for their work on “Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends”. Also, the George Bush impersonator is pretty good, too.
  • The LA Times has an article on the emergence of women directors, and mentions Joey Lauren Adams in the piece:
Veneruso, who along with a handful of volunteers keeps the First Weekenders Group running, expects the subscriber base to triple as the video podcasts are shown at the group’s site, MoviesByWomen.com, on YouTube and through the iTunes network. Her first interviews feature Lipsitz, “The Dead Girl” writer-director Karen Moncrieff and “The Break-Up” actress Joey Lauren Adams, who made her directing debut with “Come Early Morning.”

Kevin Smith 101!

February 19th @ 7:29 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Jeff Smith

  • This just in for a very cool university professor in Michigan: This summer, he’s offering a new class on the schedule: a one-week film course dedicated solely to Kevin’s work. This class is being taught at Central Michigan University, in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The description from the registrar’s website reads as follows:
BCA 520J – Films of Kevin Smith (1 credit hour)

This course will examine the films of prolific Indy film director Kevin Smith. It will delve into Smith’s history, his entry into filmmaking, his development as a director and writer, and explore motifs and themes as seen in his films. The course will also examine Smith’s trademark “wordy” style in terms of storytelling and narrative flow. 22020171 M Tu W Th 03:30-06:50PM Moore 109 Smith, Jeffrey. Class meets MAY 21 – MAY 24

To call the info up yourself, go to http://www.registrars.cmich.edu/courses/CourseOfferings/, select summer 2007, select the BCA department, type 520J into the box, and hit submit.

Talk about a great excuse to go back to school! If anyone is interested in coming to the scenic “middle-of-the-state” area for a week, the class caps at (I think) 40 students, though it could probably be bumped higher if the need arose. Professor Jeff tells us that he may even ask Kevin to pop in for a day if it suits his schedule.

  • More UK press for Kevin to kick off newsbites today. The March issue of Impact hits the streets this week, with all manner of action movie goodness from around the world including two mentions of our hero’s latest appearances (Die Hard 4 and his voice role in the Ninja Turtles film). See the scanned pages here for the story.
  • The Region 2 Clerks II DVD hits shops everywhere in the UK today. If you don’t have a region free player that allowed you to purchase one from us, enjoy finally bringing this gem into your home to spin up over and over! Having watched it a few more times already, we can attest that it’s got a bunch of replay value.
  • Movie Maze also has the teaser trailer for the Jason Lee-voiced “Underdog” coming this summer, for those of you who had trouble streaming through Yahoo the other day.

  • On World Wrestling Entertainment’s offical site, they ran a piece talking to fan about their picks for the upcoming No Way Out Pay-Per-View event. The opening image on the main page is of 2 fans in a stare down. One fan wearing a black t-shirt and the other fan wearing a Mooby’s jersey. Image is right here for ya. We got a lot of mail on this one today, so it’s obviously quite a popular site.
  • We can’t get enough of these re-cut trailers with alternate takes on famous flicks. First up, a fun take on one person’s own version of “Good Will Hunting: Hunting Season”. Funny stuff. Also, Affleck gets a dose himself in this YouTube video titled “Supermanland”.
  • Jersey Girl will be screened in New Zealand at 8:30pm on February 25 on TV2.

Evening Harder: The Long-Lost Review!

February 18th @ 2:30 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Long thought LOST in a hard drive crash, we managed to restore our “Evening Harder” review and went back and peppered in some of the stuff we’d written for the NEW review, it’s like two two two reviews in one! But not really. If you don’t have the disc for some crazy reason yet, this review should be your excuse to go the heck out and buy it. And hey, even if you’ve already watched it over and over again (just re-watched it again to ensure the review was solid), give the review a quick look to see our menu screenshots and hear our opinion on all the good stuff, the excellent production values, and all the love that went into this 2-disc DVD set. Enjoy! We’ll be back later with more news.

Kevin On “Reaper”, Other Plans…

February 17th @ 12:34 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Movidude74

  • Kevin stopped by the board to give a quick reaction to the “Reaper” pilot news, revealed a familiar DP will be onboard, and also dropped HUGE NEWS that he’s writing not one, but TWO new films which he’s hoping to direct BACK TO BACK in late 2007 and early 2008. YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! Here’s Kevin:
Would’ve said something here first, but there wasn’t supposed to be something said at all yet, as my deal’s not closed.

But, yes – if t’s are dotted and i’s are crossed properly – I’m going to direct the pilot for “Reaper”. It’s less “Brimstone” or “Dead Like Me” (as some have suggested here) and more “Shaun of the Dead” than anything else. I’m trying get Trevor into the cast mix as well, and Baby Dave is gonna shoot it.

Why am I doing it? a) The script is funny, and b) I’ve always been curious about trying my hand at directing something I didn’t write. Never had an interest in doing that on the big screen, but “Reaper” presented an excellent opportunity to give it a go in a smaller (yet, ironically, far larger) pond.

The shoot runs about two weeks in March, so it’s not going to compromise my schedule too badly. I’m still in the midst of writing the next two flicks, which Mos and I are hoping to shoot back-to-back this fall and winter.

Wow. Anyone got a copy they can send us for the archives? This sounds like a keeper. Kevin comments on quite a few things in his guest editor spot throughout the issue, so we’ve got scans of anything he’s involved with above as part of this article. The entire DVD reviews section was edited by Kevin this month. Just click away for a better look. Most of Kevin’s thoughts are relayed in post-it note fashion, so direct your eyeballs that way. We’ve also included some shots of the DVD itself, a sure collectible for any View Askew fan.

  • USA Today’s pop culture expert Whitney Matheson once again compliments Kevin in her latest column, this time citing his as one of the best celebrity websites out there:
Kevin Smith — The director makes tons of time for his fans, and he doesn’t hold back when it comes to his experiences in the business.
  • DVDFile reports that “Catch and Release” will hit DVD on May 8th. If you missed it in theaters, don’t miss it at home. It’s a fine film that was very well liked by fans and critics last month, and very much worth your valuable time. It plays well for extra viewings as well, so it’ll be a worthy purchase.
  • Jay takes onscreen kudos from that wonderful site The Shiznit as of the Top 10 Movie Drug Dealers:
5. JAY from the VIEW ASKEW movies

A small town dealer and Jersey born and bred, Jay is always representing out front of his local Quick Stop, pounds of pot in his pocket and eager to make a deal. Shit, give him your order and he’ll even sing you a song if you’re lucky, perhaps a number by his favourite band, “Morris Day and the motherfuckin’ Time” – clearly, years of being a mallrat have left his tiny mind in a musical muddle. Forever flanked by his hetero-lifemate Silent Bob, Jay has made quite a living shifting dope: together, the two clueless stoners saved up enough to buy the convenience store they were permanently attached to, on the proviso they were allowed to continue dealing outside – now that’s a sound business investment. Jay was pretty much a given to appear on this list, given actor Jason Mewes’ fearless method acting – he spent years hitting the crack pipe to research for the role.

Say what? “Fifty bucks little man / put that shit in my hand”

  • The “Clerks II” DVD was spotted in a recent Myspace ad for Blockbuster Total Access (in an animated “claw” game). Here’s a screengrab.
