- You ready to make history, folks? Kevin’s kicking off today’s record-setting 24-hour Tweet-A-Thon around 11 AM EST (8 AM west coast), or whenever the mood strikes. So, just a couple of hours from post-time, here. We’re expecting a busy 24 hours here as the stunt has picked up quite a bit of press, including even the widely-read Perez Hilton. As we prepare for the big day, we’d like to share Kevin’s recent rules/tips information, which should help you get through the day with ease (and give you a better shot at getting your tweet noticed). Here he is:
Just a few guidelines to go over before the Tweet-Skeet begins tomorrow morning.
When I start in with the question-answering at Twitter on an average day, the Tweets from the Followers are coming so fast and frequently, that I miss more than I can get to. On a day like the Tweet-a-thon Day? Well, suffice it to say many, many questions’re gonna be missed.
Here’s my advice: Tweet your query. If it doesn’t get answered in fifteen minutes, re-Tweet it; I can’t promise I’ll find it, but the will odds improve.
Whatever you do, please DON’T POST THE SAME TWEET MULTIPLE TIMES IN A ROW as an ill-advised bid for quicker attention. It’ll get you noticed, alright; noticed into a big ol’ BLOCK.
In the interest of keeping this a public Q&A, I will not be responding “@YourNameHere” to Tweets; I’ll be responding with “From @YourNameHere” and a partial re-Tweet of the question/comment.
If an answer’s gonna require more characters than 140, I will use this message board to respond, posting the link at the response-Tweet.
There’s gonna be a constant flow of Tweets from me all day, so PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TURN OFF ANY TWITTER MOBILE ALERTS you’re signed up for. Or, feel free to un-follow me for the day (or forever, if you feel you can get on just as well without me; if you come back to me, you’re mine – if not, you’re wisely following @shitmydadsays instead).
And lastly, I’m 39, folks: my tolerance for pricks is non-existent anymore. gonna drop any pricks who’re just Tweeting hostility. Chances are, I’m gonna be pretty stoned; if I sense you trying to harsh my mellow, the ganja’s not gonna give you the benefit of the doubt. BLAM! You’re gone.
God-willing, my internet doesn’t crap out. If it does, I’ll go mobile ’til I can get to a connection again. If all else fails, the Emergency Broadcasting Network will inform you of where to go/what to do.
See you in the a.m., probably by 8-ish west coast time.
This is gonna be fun. Stupid, but fun.
A request from us as well — Since this is going to be a MASSIVE day of information overload, potentially, depending on what is asked and how Kevin’s answered, if you see something newsworthy before we do, let us know. We won’t be covering all tweets here at the site or in the archives, so your best bet will be to follow along via the web and enjoy the day.
The Twitter Report…
- Vegas shows rescheduled, more new podcasts, early “Hit Somebody” plans, and new shoes from etnies all hinted at this week via the Twitter of @ThatKevinSmith. Here’s the greatest hits:
@JayBear_Mix100 “I think you should make a film that introduces Canada to Americans” That’s up next. We’re thinking summer start, so @ThatDavidKlein can shoot his 1st season on TRUE BLOOD. But let’s try to Sundance w/RED STATE before we start planning HIT SOMEBODY.
Via @TVIsMyConstant “Why’d you cancel the Vegas shows?” Sorry – something had to give, schedule-wise. Doing Vegas in the spring now instead.
Via @RitaAmber “is there going to be another run of the etnies shoes?” Indeed – slightly altered. Then, next year, get ready for SMeakers…
Via @strwbrrylaundry “what time does GET OLD drop today” Sorry: it’s a GET OLD skip week. But NEXT week? First non-audience ep of the show.
Via @FrowShaw “When is the next GET OLD being posted?” Hopefully Thursday. Mewes is shooting a flick out of town, so patience please…

“Clerks” Etnies on Sale – Our Review!
- The long-awaited “Clerks” Kevin Smith etnies shoes went on sale exclusively on their web site, and are selling so fast we’re not even sure any will be left by the time you’re reading this. Hurry on over to grab your size while you still can. Etnies were kind enough to provide a pair of these rare kicks for preview, and here’s our thoughts.
First off, let’s talk about the style and look. The “Clerks” Jameson takes etines popular Jameson style and adds some cool, yet subtle touches.
Of particular note is of course the “Clerks.” font which appears on the outsides of each shoe. The folks at Etnies have also taken that font for their own logo which appears across the tongue. The deep black color fits very well with the look of the shoe and makes them stylish for every wardrobe. Other than the text, the design is very subtle and basic, which should make for a pretty versatile shoe that can fit with any wardrobe style.
Last, but certainly not least, the insides of the shoe, when placed together, feature a glimpse at an iconic moment from the “Clerks” film, of Jay and Silent Bob against the stores. Obviously you won’t see this while wearing them, but you’ll know it’s there — And it’s an extra conversation piece if you wanna show them off to your pals. Make sure you’ve got on clean socks and fresh feet first, of course.
How about the comfort level? Well, we’re happy to say these shoes not only look good, they feel great. Jamesons are one of etnies’ most popular and comfortable shoes, so this line was the perfect fit for adopting as a custom Kevin Smith shoe — Their trademarked STI foam makes these the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever walked in. Construction is durable, making it feel like these things would take some abuse pretty well — But let’s face it, these things are too cool to abuse too much. They’re best reserved for special occasions. Once they’re gone, it’s not like you’ll be able to nab yourself a replacement pair.
These beauties are available in very limited supply (we hear only 300 pairs were crafted) and when they’re gone, that’s it. Even if your size is out of stock, it might be worth picking up a pair just to collect them. They are indeed the first and only pair of shoes custom designed for the Askewniverse.
Watch this space for some exclusive photos of our preview pair later today.
“Red State” Ramblings…
- Kevin’s post-holiday Twitter stream featured a great deal of information on “Red State” including runtime, distribution plans, going trailer-free (we hope it sticks, no plot spoilers!), video on-demand, and more. Here’s the rundown on “Red State”:
Via @RonStAmant “what is RedState clocking in lengthwise?” 95-ish with credits. We slowed our credit roll down so you can read EVERYBODY’S name, without exception. We couldn’t pay the cast & crew much on the flick this time out, so the least we could do was REALLY credit them.
Via @Irrigation_Man “How will you go about finding a UK distributor?” If we don’t find worldwide distribution at Sundance, we can break it up & sell it territory-by-territory – the ol’ Miramax way. In that instance, it’d be wise for overseas distribs to be at the screening on the 23rd. But even if we don’t lock up foreign at Sundance, the Berlin Market is right around the corner; could do all foreign sales there.
Via @Goalmember “Also are you press junking over here in UK?” I’m not press-junketing at all, anywhere. In fact, I’m not doing any press outside of maybe a business piece or 2 to help sell the flick if needed, & radio (LOTS of radio). That’s what http://smodcast.com/redstate/ is about: I’m providing all the information needed to write a story, if that’s what you’re looking to do. It’s INSANELY detailed, and by the time we’re done, I’ll have pre-answered all questions about RedState – thus negating the need to speak with me about it. From nearly 20 yrs experience, I know this much: folks are gonna write WHATEVER they want, whether I sit down with them or not. So I’ll just furnish all the information I’d normally serve up one at a time to a small, jaded audience that doesn’t really give a shit unless there’s someone famous in the room, to a much larger, APPRECIATIVE audience that would actually enjoy & benefit from hearing the same information. And thus far, it’s been working out great. Folks that wanna write about RedState pull from the podcasts, folks that don’t wanna but have to (so as not to seem behind the curve or a day late & dollar short in this information-is-currency culture) are doing what they lazily always do: pulling from the OTHER blogs that actually did their homework. Sometimes, their Google searches take ’em back to the earliest stories (like back when DermotMulroney was sort of briefly mentioned once) & it shows up in their current posting, exposing their sloppy work ethic (which, they’ll accuse me of having in MY work, without a hint of irony). So rather than subject all involved to a painful waste of resources, time & money, I’m doing the RedStateOfTheUnion Q&A’s. It’s kind of like an audio press kit. We’re even transcribing them now, for the SUPER lazy writers who’ve already bitched about having to wade through 12 hours of audio so they can write knowledgeably about a subject. Nobody needs to talk to me anymore anyway, as anyone who’s curious can always know what I’m thinking 24/7 right here on Twitter. Besides – the REALLY interesting story in RedState isn’t me; it’s MichaelParks. Or JohnGoodman. Or MelissaLeo. Or the ENTIRE cast. Or s’about how @ThatDavidKlein CRUSHED it.
Via @sonic43 “Will you be recording the post show Q&A at Sundance” I will. But I’ll edit out anyone who asks to be cut. #FearNotDistributors
Via @JackEdwardSmith “When will the full Red State trailer be released?” Not sure I wanna do a full, plot-oriented trailer. Saw lots of talk about the teaser, where cats were like “It doesn’t tell us anything about the plot” like that was a negative. I dunno – I LIKE not knowing anything. But a full trailer’ll ultimately be up to whoever distributes the flick, really. If it were up to me, though? I’d go teaser only.
Via @rpm1275 “read a great article about VOD & new releases over weekend, is this a route you can take with RedState?” Can we? Totally. Will we? Eventually. But NOT up front. I know it’s a digital age, and most people would rather get their entertainment at home (me included). But I’m a filmmaker from a generation that still feels like it fails if our flicks don’t debut in a movie theater & have a theatrical run. It’s illogical, I know – especially when the costs of releasing a flick are as high as the budget in some cases. But, to ME (this is how I feel in regards to the movies I make ONLY), a VOD debut would feel like a straight-to-video debut back in the 90’s. I know the business mode lends more toward a VOD environment for specialized cinema… but that’s the biz part of showbiz… and the SHOW half of the equation still burns too brightly in my big ol’ gut to allow for a biz-ness decision that the 21 yr old Kev who STARTED this journey, ‘lo those many years ago, would find unacceptable. We change & grow if we’re lucky, but we can’t shake the quirks that make up who were are as individuals. My makeup doesn’t allow for VOD first. VOD eventually, but I’m a movie-maker; I GOTTA show my stuff in a movie theater first. It’s stupid & conventional & antiquated, but all those people gathering in a building outside of their homes… that still means something to me. To have the power to make someone leave their comfortable home & spend money on some story you’re telling is the mead of gods. In a life that starts solely so that it can eventually end, the knowledge I can still get people to come to a movie theater to see my shit is oddly comforting.
Via @keithmat “what type of content would you put out straight-VOD?” That’s something we’ll be talking about in the next episode of GET OLD.
Via @munny_monkey “what #SModcast did you pull audio clip on the opening of the RedState trailer?” Latest: http://smodcast.com/smodimations
We totally love the idea of going trailer-free, sticking with the teaser and marketing the movie just that way. Trailers run over 2 minutes now lately and give way too much plot and key visuals away for a film. They’re fun to watch, sure, but Kevin’s done such a good job at shielding the net from spoilers on this, we’d prefer it stay that way. Obviously, after the January screenings at Sundance, spoilers are bound to leak, but we here at News Askew will be doing our best to stay spoiler-free and keep you that way, too.
It’s safe to continue listening to the Red State podcast, as that is also just scratching the surface of the film’s plot. With a limited press rollout as well, and a planned March 2011 arrival, we’re hoping that “Red State” can arrive without the world revealing all its surprises.
With such a fast turnaround planned, expect a great deal of “Red State” coverage from us in early 2011.
The “Red State” Trailer: Day Two…
- How to know you’ve got a good movie trailer on your hands: It gets people talking. The press takes notice. And, most of all, it makes you ask the queston: “How soon can I see that movie?”. The “Red State” trailer, which took the web by storm and surprise yesterday, does all those things. The quick-edit, score and dialogue-free style has us replaying it over and over again, catching new glimpses each time. Just as Kevin promised, “Red State” looks like nothing he’s ever put in front of a camera before – Unrelenting, bleak, and DARK. We love it.
Take a look at some of our favorite shots grabbed from the teaser – If you blinked when you watched, you might have missed them.
We rushed the link up yesterday, but have had some time to catch up on everything else now — Here’s Kevin’s lead-in and introduction from yesterday’s twitter stream when he unleashed the video:
It’s been a bumpy 2010 – some people might even say turbulent. I’m not clear on turbulence concept as I didn’t fly much this year… *ahem*
I also got into scraps galore – some justified, some childish. I can make no excuses but to admit I’ve learned from both. We rise, we fall. We turned one podcast into MANY this year. I released the highest grossing flick I’ve ever made. I had FUN. All thanks to you good people. For someone in my line of work, no paycheck – no matter how astronomical – can hold a candle to an an appreciative & invested audience.
You folks ARE worth far more to me than you can ever know – or SHOULD ever know, for that matter, as it’d give you the thin girl upper-hand. Every day, I wake up, take a leak, & open Twitter. And you “strangers” Tweet sentiments so nurturing/encouraging, it’s as if you’re family. I’d like to thank you, the folks on Twitter – with whom I spend more time than I do my own family – for your 2010 cyber-affection/attention.
And the best way I can thank you is to STRONGLY suggest you click on the homepage for http://smodcast.com Merry Christmas, SModomites.
And then came the net’s reaction, to which Kevin said this:
Via @B_Hebertson “People talking shit on movie news sites pisses me off” Why? They’re talking about RedState – that’s all that matters.
However, if you wanna lessen the sting, let’s do some simple math: over @ AICN, inarguably the site with the most trash-talkin’est of all the TalkBack boards offered at any of the movie-centric urls, the RedState trailer’s getting lots of chatter – the most, it would seem, with 120 comments. And that’s not 120 different people making comments; just 120 comments. Let’s be VERY generous and say 100 people made those 120 comments since that story went up around noon. That’s not bad; again – good enough to make it the current top commented story. However, If I walk away from Twitter to take a leak, I’ll return to about 120 new comments – no repeats, all uniques. And go read my Twitter feed today: there are literally THOUSANDS of Tweeted kudos from people who’re gonna pay to see RedState as soon as they can. And those cranks at the movie site comments section that sparked this discussion? They’re gonna pay to see it, too – just to see if they’re right. If they don’t they can’t be considered serious cineastes, can they? So don’t sweat the comments, man: a) the number of negative comments in the TalkBack section of the most popular movie website on the planet number under 100; and, as explained, they’re gonna give me their money anyway. And b) ALL chatter is good chatter. So let ’em scrum in the corners all they want; I’m way up here with the puck, and the goalie’s a sieve.
We also loved this post from AICN gury Harry Knowles on the new trailer as well as his thoughts on Kevin’s other works. Take a look.
And finally, what about that mysterious MARCH title card at the end? Seems that, according to Kevin, it’s just a plan/goal, but he seems confident that the film will be ready for a quick turn around once distribtuion is announced:
Via @ToastedSchizo “So ballsy of you to put ‘March’ at the end without a distrib.” JFK told a story about his Grandfather, who grew up in Ireland. Walking home from school, there was this long, high stone wall that – if gotten over – halved the time it took to get home. One day JFK’s grandfather threw his cap over the wall – knowing if he came home without the cap, he’d be bitch-slapped. To fully motivate himself to do something difficult, he committed – to a risky degree. Tagging that trailer with March was me throwing my hat over the wall. #FuckWaiting
Kevin continues to show his dedication and love for the film by taking it right to the most simple of approaches — He’s created his own poster art, cut his own trailer, handled all his own press. The movie cost just under $4 million to take, and the trailer was cut in less than 20 minutes. Yes, TWENTY MINUTES!
“Red State”, today, is the most talked-about film on the internet. We’re just glad that March 2011 is just a few months away. Can’t wait? Watch this site for details on how you can be part of the “Red State of the Union”, semester #2, at SModcastle, later in January.

- The people behind this look back at 2010 flicks really should be hired by the Oscars or at least the MTV awards to throw together film clippage — It’s an amazing look back at the films produced or released this year, and a must-watch (and yes, it’s got a little “Cop Out” in there, too).
- Kevin says that the new Weinstein deal announced last week makes the long-awaited (and in our opinion, superior) “Jersey Girl Extended Cut” Bluray a “real possibility”.
- Among those on the wish list for a future edition of SMovieMakers at SModcastle? JJ Abrams. With “Super 8” on the fringe, perhaps he’d like to show clippage to a select audience of 50? If you’ve got a connection, let him know.
- Longtime View Askew contributor, and star of the “Blow Hard” and “Mo and Glo” podcasts, Malcolm Ingram has a new quest — To make a porno. Stay tuned to new episodes of “Blow Hard” for details. You can also get involved immediately through a donation on that site.
- With today being Christmas eve, just in case this is our last visit with you pre-holidays, let us wish you and yours the very best of holidays — Thanks for spending a few minutes with News Askew, whether you’re here at the ‘ol .com, on twitter, or your other e-delivery product of choice. And don’t forget, big changes and enhancements to News Askew are coming in 2011. See you soon.
The “Red State” Teaser Has Arrived!
- Holy. Cow. The “Red State” teaser, previously only seen by live audiences at Kevin’s appearances, has been unleashed onto the web today. And wow, just wow. This is some amazing looking stuff here. Having previously only heard the audio, we had no idea what sort of mayhem and darkness was being synced up along with it. This movie looks dark, raw, gritty, and absolutely bleak — And that’s exactly that movie Kevin has said he wanted “Red State” to be ever since he finished the script’s first draft.
You can watch the trailer exclusively over at www.smodcast.com immediately. And if you’re like us, you’re going to run it over, and over, and over again, and even freeze it to look at some the quickly edited stuff that you think you saw and might have missed. We’ll be posting some of our favorite shots from this later, as well.
Curiously, the production company of “Harvey’s Boys” in the title credit suggests that the famous Weinstein brother may have already expressed an interest in the project, though we likely may have to wait for Sundance to find out for sure. The fact that a final card of “MARCH” appears on the trailer hits that a distributor may have already been acquired, considering the release window being established. Kevin’s always used a different production company for each of his films, so that’s not a surprise, but that name choice on the title card has caused some speculation.
We’ll have a local copy as well as screen grabs for you later. Until then, head over to www.smodcast.com for your first glimpse at “Red State” in action.
SModcast 3D Live – Boderline Bar & Grill, Jan 14!
- The Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, CA presents “SModcast 3D” with Kevin and Scott on January 14, 2011. Tickets are now on sale for the price of $35 and will certainly sell out. Doors open at 8 PM for a 9 PM start time.
We’ll keep you posted on upcoming live dates, as we’re expecting a mix of 2011 shows both at the official SModcastle as well as on the road for folks who are unable to make the trip into L.A. to check it out. With a continually growing network of podcasts, there’s always something new to check out.
Of course, don’t forget to visit the official SModcastle with tickets now on sale for the remaining shows of 2010. 2011 show announcements coming soon! You can also catch “Babble On” and “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old” every Friday night at the Jon Lovitz Comedy Club at Citywalk, Universal Studios. Kevin has stated that when possible, some shows will grow from the SModcastle to larger venues, but the castle will live on as other live gigs get announced, as a spot to try out new programming as well as hold special intimate events.

- Congrats to the hilarious cast of characters on “Tell ‘Em Steve-Dave” for sweeping up at the 2010 Podcast Awards. They won both categories for which they were nominated, “Best Comedy Podcast” and the People’s Choice, best podcast of the year! - While a lot of this stuff has made it in better quality audio to the SModcast network, we wanted to point you in the direction of Mike “Movie Miguel”‘s YouTube page, where he’s taken a lot of video from recent months of Kevin appearances in the Ohio area. If you missed them, or were there and want to relive them, worth a stop.
- The great Jason Lee will star AND DIRECT the TV program “Shredd: The Jon Johnsonsen Story”, based on a skateboarder who winds up in a coma for 25 years (1985 to the present), and wakes up in a 40 year old body, with the mind of a teenager. Bleeding Cool has details:
Jason Lee, his production company Reveille and Jack Black’s shingle Electric Dynamite are set to head up Shredd: The Jon Johnsonsen Story, about a skateboarder who in 1985 was top of his game until a skating accident put him into a coma. 25 years later he awakens in a 40 year old body, but with the mind of a teenager.
Jason Lee and Luke Watson have already written a pilot episode which Lee plans to direct and act in. During his teenage years before he stumbled into acting Lee himself was on the professional skateboarding circuit, so it will definitely be interesting to see him return to his roots with his performance in this role.
Although Electric Dynamite and Reveille have been in a two year contract deal, this marks the first TV pilot developed together from both companies, although each has their own projects in development. Lee is currently starring in TNT’s Memphis Beat which has just been renewed for a second series, and if production for Shredd goes ahead he could be playing roles in both shows around the same time.
No other cast members have been confirmed yet, and although this basic premise has been covered before in various other stories, with these production companies and Jason Lee to direct and star it looks to be a show well worth watching out for. Deadline report that the show will air on Adult Swim.
Fans of Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” know how subversive and bizarre its programming can be. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what Lee does for late night programming.
