SModcast 37 Is Here!

November 12th, 2007 @ 9:53 am | 3 Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • In a move to help ease the strain on all of our servers, Quick Stop Entertainment will be releasing each week’s fresh new SModcast on their site first before adding the feed into iTunes about a week later. We would suggest subscribing to both feeds (FeedBurner and iTunes) because who doesn’t love seeing SModcat at the top of iTunes’ podcast rankings? Here’s the rundown of this week’s episode :

      SModcast 37: In A Row? –

Our heroes go jumbo-length in celebration of an anniversary, using the time to explore a body-snatching scenario and the decision to pod or die, learn the boundaries of a hug, marvel at the cunning of a trapped deer, and plumb the depths of general ignorance.

Zack Is Locked…Miri’s Close!

November 3rd, 2007 @ 9:57 am | 5 Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Let’s kick off this weekend edition of News Askew with just-in “Zack & Miri” casting news from Kevin. The contract for Zack has been closed. So, the actor is now officially cast. However, Kevin’s not ready to announce it just yet. Could he possibly be waiting for their Miri, who has yet to close on HER contract? Quite possibly. Let’s hope this one stays quiet until Kevin announces, and doesn’t make its way out thru Variety or something. These things tend to show up quick in the trades, so we’re betting that sometime next week, probably early, we’ll at least know who Zack is, once and for all! Speculation in the News Askew mailbox has been at an all-time high, though we’re saving the guesses for the true announcement. Stay close to your computers or RSS feeds, folks.
  • Toronto Press Coverage…

September 29th, 2007 @ 10:05 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Julien Chabot, Sebastien Proulx, Ian Muttoo

    • A big part of last week was spend on a trip to Canada, where Kevin took some time to meet with press, fans, and, of course, sign books. We’ve got some nice print and multimedia for you to enjoy from that jaunt up north today.

First up, the Toronto Star prints a nice little article on the tour, the book, and “Reaper” today. It’s short, so let’s run it all:

        Boring-ass life? Not this geek

Wearing his trademark “Silent Bob” black overcoat and Vans deck shoes with an image of Homer Simpson imprinted on them, Kevin Smith makes a sit-down chat turn into an exploration of all things geeky.

What else would you expect from the writer/director/actor who’s been letting his nerd flag fly high ever since he broke onto the scene with ’90s indie hit Clerks?

Smith, 37, has inspired a fervent cult audience for whatever he decides to do – from comics he’s written to guest-starring on Degrassi: The Next Generation, one of his favourite shows.

The pop culture vulture has two movies in development, directed the series pilot for the devilishly good new series Reaper and started work on an episode of Heroes: Origins, the upcoming spinoff of the NBC hit series Heroes.

Then there’s the reason he’s in town, doing a media blitz for his new book, My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith, a collection of blog entries from Smith’s website, ViewAskew.com.

“It’s kind of nice to back into a book, but I was like `who’s going to buy it when you can read it for free online,'” Smith said yesterday at the Toronto offices of publisher Random House.

“They said, `well, not everyone has a computer.’ Like really, everyone I know has a computer. So at the end of the day I didn’t have to do much for it, as it was already written.”

Smith has been posting to his website since 1996. He says the blog/book started after one of his fans asked how he spends his days. So he started cataloguing everything he did.

“It moved beyond the initial question, where I was like, I would like to have all this, so 20 years down the road I can look back and know exactly what I was doing on a specific day – and look at it how much I wasted my youth.”

But like most bloggers, the idea of feeding the online beast became an issue.

Documenting his life from March, 2005 to November, 2006, My Boring-Ass Life begins with daily writings that evolve into longer, more sporadic posts as time goes by.

If there is a highlight, Smith says it’s the almost 70 pages called “Me and my Shadow,” where he details the journey of best friend Jason Mewes (Jay from the Clerks and Jay and Silent Bob movies) as he battles drug addiction.

“He’s actually lived through something, as opposed to me. I am pretty boring,” Smith said. His fans wouldn’t agree, but it’s all on the page for anyone to judge.

In January, Smith starts filming Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Afterwards he hopes to start on Red State, which he describes as “a political horror movie.”

Other projects Smith is working on include a weekly podcast with friend, producer Scott Mosier – they call it a Smodcast – at quickstopentertainment.com.

As for Smith’s take on this age where all things geek have gone very mainstream, he’s sanguine about it.

He doesn’t think that there will be a backlash, but rather “people will just sooner or later just become disinterested.” Perhaps, but his career is solid evidence to the contrary.

Kevin’s interview on the CBC’s “The Hour with George Strombolopoulos” can be seen on its website. Be sure to check out the hilarious cold open of the show featuring Kevin doing a “bit of business”, as he often likes to say. There’s other guests on the program, so you may need to skip in a bit to see Kev’s bit — The show streams in several pieces, so be patient, you may need to wait a few seconds here and there to let it catch up with you, depending on your connection speed.

One fan was nice enough to break out a camera and film a few minutes of what went down at a pre-book signing Q&A this week, too. Watch the shaky cam though, it’s a little rough. Sounds like a HUGE turnout for the signing there, though – Canada loves Kevin! Check out a couple short clips, direct from Canada, via YouTube : Canada Book Signing, 9/27/07 – Part One and Canada Book Signing, 9/27/07 – Part Two.

    News Askew X: What’s Up???

    August 12th, 2007 @ 3:31 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

    • After an incredibly busy month post-implementation, we’re happy to report that bug fix and feature enhancement work has now kicked back in here at the NEW News Askew. For you on-the-go types: Those of you with iPhones should be enoying a version of the site design to display special for the device, though we’re also working on giving you folks the ability to switch back to the full, more colorful site design you see on a standard computer screen. As well, we’ve started to implement other mobile versions of the site — Those of you browsing on mobile web browsers should start seeing a friendly, stripped down version of the site to allow you to get your news on the go. Or, you can also check out the RSS Feed which is always a VERY simple way to keep on top of things when you’re on the road. But more on that in a moment.

Our new tracking system’s telling us a lot of interesting facts about where ya’ll are coming from, and how often you’ve been here. We can also see that the majority of our users still use the Internet Explorer browser, which is full of display bugs when it comes to the CSS standard (the new web standard that the site’s been designed for). We’re continuing to squash those bugs, but in the meantime, highly suggest a version of Firefox or Safari for your computer if you have the means. Downloads are free, and the latest versions are VERY standards-compliant (a fancy way of sayin’ that this site will work and display the way it’s meant to). Stick with us though, IE users, as we WILL get the site as compatible as we can, fix by fix.

Look for more design and graphics changes to come as well — The look of the site is anything but finalized — The first thing you’re likely to notice will be a cleaner story format — We’ll be going back to a “bubble” like approach so the news isn’t just floating out there in a sea of white. Look for Jay & Bob to make a return to the header, as well.

We’re continuing to research ways to make the site a great reference as well as a great daily stop — If you haven’t used our Live Archives yet, give them a look, as we think it’s one of the new site’s “killer” features. We’re continuing to categorize old news as time permits, so you’ll soon be able to look back and dig up every story on a particular movie or other area of interest. We like that. We think you will, too. We’re also adding a new search highlight feature, as well, to highlight your search terms in the results you get back — A lot easier when you’re skimming for that special something.

We thank you as always for stopping by, and do hope you’re getting used to the new place — There’s so much more to come, only limited by our imaginations as well as our time, so stick with us, as it’s onward and upward from here.

    • Amazon.com is offering a nifty deal whereby you can buy individual episodes of the excellent program “Dinner for Five” for $9.95. Kevin appears on three separate episodes (Jersey Girl ep., Daredevil ep. and a random episode with Stan Lee, Mark Hamill and JJ Abrams.). Or, you can click on the “create custom DVD” link at the top and get eight Kevin clips from various episodes put on to ONE DVD for the price of $14.95. If you do that, you also have plenty of room to add other View Askew alum clips inclusing clips with the likes of: Janeane Garafolo, Alanis Morrisette, Stephen Root, Carrie Fisher and Tracey Morgan. The best deal is, of course, the series set, with all four seasons for $59.95.
    • “Chasing Amy” is one of the 40 choices in The Advocate’s survey citing the top gay-themed films of the past 40 years. Why not go complete a survey and make your choice or choices known? You can pick up to 10 flicks.
    • Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch celebrated Kevin’s birthday last week with this posting which links to a classic Q&A clip which also had some very kind things to say about his “Die Hard” turn:

What do you say to the man who’s heard everything? You say you’re sorry that you worried his cameo in Live Free or Die Hard would be grating — turns out it was way funnier than the trailer made it look. You say that you actually tried to listen to his Catch and Release commentary track with the film’s director, but got bored waiting for them to talk about Timothy Olyphant. And you say that you’re hoping someone asks him about Olyphant tonight — when Smith celebrates his 37th birthday with an onstage Q&A at Red Bank’s Count Basie Theatre — and reports back in.
    • For those of you who can’t get enough of that way cool recent Crazy4Cult art show (we’re one of them), G4TV has another video for your viewing pleasure. This one looks like a “must see” next year, hands down.
    • Superman Homepage has posted a positive, SPOILER-FILLED review of the upcoming straight-to-DVD “Superman: Doomsday” animated movie. The reviewer states that “There’s also a very, very cool Kevin Smith cameo that I won’t spoil either, but which will rock your world if you’re deep into the mythos/behind the scenes stuff.”.
    • And finally today, did you know that View Askew’s bash to celebrate the openings of the two comic stores wasn’t the only one? Check THIS out…And we’ll see ya back soon. Later!

    Showtime In A Couple Hours!

    Posted: 4:30 AM

We’re still stuck in that traffic jam so time continues to slip on our Red Bank arrival — Luckily we left plenty early (though waking up at 4:30 AM, not really recommended)…We don’t anticipate any problems getting into town in plenty of time, and look forward to checking out the line outside the theater and saying hello to all of the fans throughout the day. Those of you checking us out through your mobile internet methods at the event — Hello! And for the rest of you who can’t be here…Stick with us for the latest breaking news from Vulgarthon 2006!

    Vulgarthon Kicks Off!

    Posted: 10:00 AM

We’ve arrived in Red Bank with plenty of time to spare, and while the weather remains overcast, the temperature is just perfect for the massive line that’s formed outside — Looks like everyone’s pretty much claimed their spot in line and ready to rock, as we run into Thonmaster Ming leaving the Stash along with Betty Aberlin. Perfect timing, actually. We’re outfitted with VIP passes from him, and make our way towards the famous Clearview Cinema. On our way, some superfans are waiting towards the front of the line that we recognize – Karla, Silent Boba Fett, and Douglas Fir, who comes in from the UK for all of these events (good on you, sir!). Gotta thank Karla for that cookie, too. Gramp’s lurking outside as well.

We took some shots of the crowd outside to give you an idea of what a sold out crowd here at the Clearview looks like. So check out the photos and see if you can spot yourself. Ming set us up with a couple goodie bags, which you’ll see a shot of here as well (the contents inside).
Right on schedule, the doors open with Kevin Smith himself greeting each and every attendee with a firm handshake and a hello as they enter the doors. Two wristband colors this year, purple and yellow, each indicating the theater which patrons are supposed to file into and stake out their seats. We’ve decided to set up camp inside our usual theater one, the larger of the two.

    Theater One Rocks!

    Posted: 10:30 AM

We’ve got ourselves parked in our usual location here, feels like home — Back row of theater one, allowing us easy in and easy out to post updates, as we’ve just realized there’s no service reaching the cell phone inside the theater. We’ve also realized that we really need to watch BOTH the first two films as well as the Q&A’s, as they’re both going to be new to us — First up, top secret flick #1 – Kevin’s first non-Askew starring vehicle, “Catch And Release”. Then, Malcolm Ingram’s documentary “Small Town, Gay Bar”.
The crowd shuffles in and takes their seats, snacks in hand, and we start pretty close to ON TIME (right around 10 minutes past the 10 AM hour) with Kevin Smith and the reveal of our first film.

Secret Film #1: “Catch & Release”

    Posted: 11:00 AM

It’s a big honor for us today, as Kevin takes the stage to welcome us to the thon and also reveal that we will indeed be the FIRST audience to see “Catch And Release”. Writer/Director Susannah Grant takes the stage and lets us know that we’re also seeing a version that no one else will never see, and we’ll have a chance to give feedback after the film. The ending that is attached to this print is apparently going to be reshot and changed.”Catch & Release” is an excellent, fun, flick — Should be the PERFECT date film when it arrives in theaters January 2007. Since we’re privy to such an early look, we’re going to keep spoilers to a minimum here, but we can let you know that the film opens finding lead Garner’s character “Gray” with a suddenly deceased fiance and three male friends (one of which is our own beloved Kevin Smith, as Sam). The flick proves a surprise as the Garner/Olyphant relationship that you saw in the trailer, while important, is only treated as one of the plots, and all the characters get lots to do. Kevin himself probably enjoys more screentime than anyone, and gets major laughs in pretty much any scene that he appears. The dude’s multi-talented, for sure, and many say even carries the film throughout.

Following the film, Grant returns to the stage for a Q&A. We learn that she filmed over three hours of material and quite a bit was cut, including a few subplots. Kevin, however, got most of his material in there, in fact, managed to ad lib to extend the screentime ever more, she joked. So why the delay in release? “Catch” was due last month originally and would definitely play fine anytime, but since Garner was pregnant, than busy finishing up Alias, the studio decided they wanted to wait for her availability to promote the film to its full extent. Thus, the current January 2007 bow is scheduled. We’re predicting a fine take for the film, which should have couples filling up the seats. Really enjoyed this one. Congratulations to all involved.

Film Two: “Small Town Gay Bar”

    Posted: 1:00 PM

“Small Town Gay Bar” is an outstanding documentary achievement for Ingram, and the audience digs it. The film focuses on not one but three gay bars in small towns in Mississippi: Rumors, Crossroads, and Different Seasons. However, it’s not the bars, but the people that are the stars of this one — Topics range from the bars themselves to such issues as hate crimes, tolerance, and gay rights. Ingram interviews both sides and the opinions are sometimes sad, sometimes shocking, and sometimes funny. The film presents an excellent picture of this small part of the world, though one gets the impression that this could take place in any town, USA.
At 2:15, director Malcolm Ingram takes the stage to bunches of appluase. Malc fields questions ranging from coming out to tolerance to his thoughts on filming and interviewing the Reverend Fred Phelps. He reveals that STGB will continue on the festival circuit, even celebrating a screening at the old “Crossroads” site, followed by a bow on Showtime sometime in 2007. Regardless of your sexual orientation or opinions, “Small Town” is a recommended watch, and a true portrait of a segment of this country that many folks ignore, or just misunderstand.Kudos to Malc on a well filmed and well assembled flick. We’re happy to have finally seen it. At tomorrow’s event, Malc will be debuting a newly cut version of the flick which he says is radically different. He also promises that the eventual DVD release of the film will be loaded with extras, as there’s tons of extra footage around.

Film Three: “Jersey Girl Extended Cut”!

    Posted: 2:30 PM

Since we caught this one last year, we opted to only watch the opening moments of Jersey Girl Extended, where the majority of the new material is located. After that, it was out to the theater lobby for the internet hookup, allowing you all to see the wonderful images and stories that we posted earlier this afternoon. After prepping things, it was up to the Stash for some wireless internet access and finalizing everything. Walt was manning the register and took a few moments to chat up hockey between the busy comings and goings of customers. Gotta love when the ‘Thon’s in town.
During our work session, none other than Brian O’Halloran arrives in the store and greets us warmly. He’s kind enough to keep us company (and laugh about our spartan work environment, as we’re camped out on the middle of the Stash floor). We congratulate Brian on the Cannes success (he assures it was as amazing as it looked and sounded) and promise to catch up with him later. Brian’s kind enough to pose for some photos with fans and sign some autographs before he heads back to the theater.Due to the Jersey Girl Extended cut’s length, Kevin only held a short Q&A session following the film, which we missed — If anything new was mentioned at the Q&A, let us know please! After getting the news to ya, we decided it was time to lead off to…

    Dinner & Beer Break!

    Posted: 6:30 PM

We joined our pal John “The Kiwi” Lovegrove for a beer and food run over the lunch break today — John was actually kind enough to bring a variety of beers from his home state of Oregon on the plane across the country with them, and keep them chilled all day long for us to enjoy. What a guy. Photos were taken on the cell phones, so they’re forthcoming, but needless to say, the beer was fantastic, and we drank a few at record pace to ensure we’d have time to grab a bite and not miss a moment of the next flick.
On the way back from the Holiday Inn, we stop at a nice pizza/sub place nearby and order some grub for all of us. Good stuff. Food’s always a very very welcome sight after sitting in the theaters for an extended period of time.

    Secret Film #2: “Clerks II”!!!!

    Posted: 7:30 PM

Clerks II. What more can we say? The exciting moment of the day was wisely saved towards the end. Theater One had it on the program second to last, and theater two is watching it as we type, their final film of the night. For the audience, the film of course played absolutely pitch perfect. Roaring laughter, gasps, sighs, and even some pensive silence in all the right places. Not only that, but for this reporter, the few minutes of cuts between the last screening in Burbank and here weren’t even noticed, yet the film somehow moved just a little more smoothly. I can’t even tell you what exactly was removed, but the film FLIES by and is just packed full of laughs in each and every scene. The major culmination piece towards the film’s end, which many thought would be the NC-17 reason, rocks the house, and yes, every single obscene moment absolutely remains. Not one cut for content was made at the MPAA’s request, just some tightening up by Kevin which, amazingly, isn’t even noticed. Fans: You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie.
Following the screening, Kevin, Brian, and Jen all took front and center of theater one for a nice Q&A session. This one proved to be the freshest of the evening, as most of the questions surrounded the film and other current events in the Askewniverse. Kevin treated us to anecdotes such as a tale of Mewes’ excitement and daily involvement on set, Harvey’s pivotal role in getting the film to Cannes, music rights, bra shopping with Jen, and much much more. Some related news:

Jeff Anderson’s “Now You Know” (which also stars Trevor Fuhrman) is due for DVD in August.

The R rating was a complete shock to Kevin and everyone. He figured that after the previous battles the MPAA just gave them a pass or just truly felt they deserved the R. Kevin also joked that perhaps they just didn’t WATCH the whole film.

The Clerks cartoon movie will still happen, direct to DVD, but Kevin hasn’t finished the script yet. He’s been focusing on getting Clerks II absolutely perfect and hopes to get back to that project soon. Regardless of the box office for Clerks II, the Animated movie project is a go.

Jeff Anderson wasn’t quite on board at the start, unsure if the Clerks sequel was the right idea — After a couple days of filming, and viewing Kevin’s cut together footage, he was incredibly enthusiastic and knew that he made the right choice.

There WILL be a soundtrack for Clerks II! Kevin just found out last week. Pretty much all the music rights for the tunes in the flick have been secured.

There’s currently debate going on regarding subtitling the film. The subtitle “The Second Coming” may be added, though at this point Kevin is asking the film simply be released as “Clerks II”.

Clerks II will arrive on 2,000 screens on July 21st. This is double the originally thought of 1,000 screens, which means that the flick will absolutely come to a theater near you in less than TWO MONTHS!

The 5 million dollar budget has already been covered by advanced foreign sales alone. Anything Clerks II makes theatrically is totally gravy.

Kevin feels that Clerks II is his finest work to date, and rightfully so. He and everyone involved have a lot to be proud about. It’s a film that stands alone OR serves as a companion piece to the original. Universally appealing. And the stuff they get away with…Wow. Mark your calendars and gather up your friends. It’s going to be a great night out at the movies this July.

Watching the film with this east coast audience was a true highlight of the event. It’s a fast moving, hilarious movie…So good, in fact, we could watch it again right now. We’re excited for you all to see it.

    We’ll Conclude Coverage Tomorrow…

    Posted: 10:00 PM

We’re signing off on updates for this evening, and headed in to finish up the last film and Q&A of the night — “Oh What A Lovely Tea Party” is kicking off, followed by a Q&A with Jen and Malcolm, which we’re going to write up but don’t expect to have posted until tomorrow. We hope you enjoyed today’s coverage, and look forward to touching up these photos (removing red eye, cropping, higher resolutions, etc). Watch for that and more. Thanks for surfing with us today, and to everyone we met at the event today — Thanks for stopping by to chat. Loved meeting you all!

The Missing “Jersey Girl” Q&A Session!

    Posted: 7:10 AM

We’d like to give Sami, aka DanteChick20, mad props for transcribing what she recalls from the Jersey Girl extended Q&A session at Vulgarthon. Here’s her excellent summary of what took place. Oh, and a bonus tidbit we just remembered from the Clerks II Q&A session – Kevin actually wrote the role of Becky for his wife Jen, but after it was determined a major star needed to be in that role, he changed her voice for Rosario and fit Jen into the role of Emma. Good stuff. Here’s the Q&A:

Carlin jumped at the chance to be in the flick, although was upset that he didn’t get to strangle the little girl (he told Kevin to write a movie in which he would be a minister that strangled children).

He held onto the scene of Jennifer Lopez and Gertie dancing at the end for as long as he could. He really wanted to keep it, but because of the Bennifer press he knew he couldn’t. But, he held onto it until the last cut stage

They had to pay through their teeth for “Landslide”. He showed the movie to Stevie Nicks and she sold them the song for 200,000.00. He said it was the most expensive song he purchased for a movie.

The little girl that played Gertie got better at acting as the movie went on. When they were doing the initial days of shooting she really didn’t get into it. Even Ben and Jen (wow, 2 separate people) went to Kevin and said “I don’t think she can do this”, but after some creative editing on Kevin’s part it turned out great. Then by the end of the movie she got better.

The role of Arthur Brickman, played in the movie by Jason Biggs, was supposed to go to Mewes, but because of his drug habit at the time, it was suggested to Kevin that he pick someone else.

He always knew there was going to be a pageant in Gertie’s school, and he always knew it was going to be a song from Sweeney Todd because he loves the musical. That’s all I can remember. After he answered the initial question, there was always a story to go with it as well which is cool. But, I remember mostly the answers. Hope this helps :).

Are you home and looking through all those amazing Vulgarthon pics you took? Got a favorite shot or two? Send them our way! We’re screening the best shots from the event to add to our coverage, like the one you see above – The Mooby’s Crew from the front of the line (courtesy Robbie). With a bit of fancy Photoshop work there, of course. We’re especially looking for some Day two shots of the event. Of course, while we can’t use them all, we’d love to see your favorites and include some with our continuing coverage. Thanks again for your support, and we hope you had a blast at the event.

The New Site – What’s The Latest?

    July 9th, 2007 @ 5:03 pm | 4 Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

    • We appreciate the feedback we’ve heard form you all on the new design and site so far. First up, we want you all to know we’re glad that you like what you’re seeing, and also appreciate what we’re doing. The site that you’re looking at is, really, in our eyes, still very much a “beta” site. We didn’t want to miss our 10th birthday, and had the site at least in good working order, for the most part, so we decided to go ahead with the rollout, figuring more eyes on it would mean more testing, and more feedback. So, we thank you for all you’re doing so far.

The first round of bugs we plan to tackle are visual ones. We can see that a lot of you (almost 50% of the site visitors) are using Internet Explorer 7 or 6. This will definitely result in some display issues, especially in IE6. Once we get the bug fixed, you’ll see all the pretty pictures much better. We also have some toolbar overlap with the top dropdown menus that’s only happening in IE, not Firefox or Safari. So, visually fixing up the site is our top task at the moment.

For those of you with smaller screens or resolutions, we hear you. The right sidebar is a bit larger than necessary and we’re working to take that down a bit to assist you. The site looks awesome in widescreen settings and higher resolutions, and takes full advantage, it just doesn’t scale down as nice as we’d like. We’re working on it, and we’ll ensure that you have as pleasant an experience as the rest of us. We have already started removing the sidebar from pages such as a the Drinking Games splash screen, where the large image was causing issues for smaller screens.

Header graphics will return, either the one you know and love or a brand new design. We’re doing all the design off-site right now, so our changes don’t interfere with the site you’re viewing. When we get it looking pretty, we’ll roll out design fixes, as available. The site’s look will evolve over the next few weeks and months, all for the better.

Iphone users: We hear the site looked pretty good on the phone’s safari browser, though with all the extra header and sidebar fluff, we worried it was a bit much. So, for now, you’ll get a special version of the page automatically when you connect via your iphone, that will just give you a plain version of the news. We’re hoping to soon add in an option that will allow you to switch between the bare bones version and back to the full colorful version, if you choose.

Our live archive is something we love and will continue to improve over the next few weeks. It involves going back to every story and categorizing it to allow more specific searching through old posts. Soon, we’ll have an advanced search that will give you category based control, as well. But not until we have everything in its place. Categories are brand new for News Askew this time around, so it involves a lot of time and effort in reading each old post, and deciding where to put it. Even creating new categories as we see fit. The live archive is up and running but is beta software using javascript. It may not work for you. If not, please try a more recent browser and ensure your javascript is running.

We sincerely hope you are enjoying the new News Askew, and that you’ll stick with us as the new site continues to evolve into its new form. Thanks as always for your patience and support.

    News Askew X Has Arrived!

    • So, here we are! News Askew X. The site you’re now viewing represents almost a half a year of preparation, layout, and database design. And we’re still not done. We HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you use a modern browser, the latest version of Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari. We’re still finding heaps of Internet Explorer 6 bugs, so if you’re under that browser, please upgrade or be patient with us as we work to figure them all out. Also, enable Javascript if you know how. That will ensure that some of the extra features will function as we intended.

You may notice an options console in the upper-right corner. This currently functions under all browsers except for IE (a fix is coming for that). With it, you can switch News Askew from a fluid, widescreen design to a more static, slimmer design. You can also change the main color scheme to your liking. These features may stick around, or we may force a color on you down the line. For now, the choice is yours. We have some design left to do as far as graphics go, so things are going to evolve from this point, especially in the site header.

We’re still in the process of categorizing the almost 7,000 stories here at News Askew. When we’re done, you’ll be able to use a new extended live search to interactively pull up stories by month, year, or even catgegory. For now, the general archives page will get you where you need to be.

Image handling is much nicer at the new site. If you’re using a fairly new browser, say goodbye to those images that show up in new windows. Try clicking this thumbnail image below and see how the new image expansion feature looks. Niiiice.

We’re pleased to say that our polls archive is 80% re-established, and live polling has now returned to the site. Be sure to cast your vote on the current poll question, and submit your own ideas for future News Askew polls. Yes, we’ll be asking at some point what you think of the new site, but want to get the major bug fixes before we start getting some feedback.

That’s about all we want to say about the new design, for now. As we put the finishing touches on features, we’ll let you know here at the front page. Commenting on stories is encouraged and live, though you’ll have to re-register yourself. Reserve that user name that you’ve been looking for now. As always, we have the rights to refuse any user name or comment post. So behave yourselves. Poke around a bit, try a search, and see what you think. We realize it’s a big change. We know you’re going to grow to love it, if you don’t already. Welcome to News Askew X, the new News Askew!
