  • More On Dogma…

  • Nolan Reese sends us this refreshing piece from CineZine’s latest e-mail newsletter, which is run by the folks who left Film Threat to work on their own. Interestingly, they found “Chasing Amy” to be the BEST film of the year! “Good Wilble, but Ethan really doesn’t mind this because he “fucking hates” doing the casts for it. haha. Also, I guess some CGI will be used to make him more…..shitty?

We just thought you might find that interesting…Remember to check Dogma : Rumor Control for all the latest up-to-date info on the film!

  • Kim posted this note today. It’s VERY important for those of you who’ve been procrastinating placing that Stash order! Spend some of that Christmas cash and get it before it’s gone! Here’s what she said:
Sorry guys, have to put a moratorium on the personalizations for the immediate future, should be back to normal once production wraps on DOGMA.

If you haven’t yet received a personalized order that you placed before today, rest assured it is coming. If you have been procrastinating ordering something up ’til now, you have until 12:00 PM (EST) Wednesday January 14, 1998 to order the following:

      personalized Clerks/Amy screenplay book
      personalized Mallrats book
      personalized Posters of any Kind
      pick-it-yourself Clerks/Amy cells

The above mentioned items will be available in limited quantities bearing just Kevin’s signature (limited only by the number we get him to sign before taking off to rehearse with actors), and of course, VA selected cells (cause Kevin won’t have to agonize over you getting JUST the right scene, merely trust us to send from the right movie) tee-shirts, hats, keychains, jerseys, blueprints, and mousepads will be available as ever.

    Clerks Sequel: The FINAL Word

    January 13th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • You read about it here, the WWWBoard, Ain’t It Cool, and you may have even heard talk buzzing around about it at VulgarThon. A Clerks sequel. We’re almost regretting the fact we even brought it up, since we seem to be getting the blame for spreading this “rumor”, which Kevin is certainly getting tired of reading about and denying on the board.
  • Here’s our take on the whole thing: Did Kevin mention a Clerks Sequel at the Q&A? Yes, in theatre 2. Was he serious? Maybe. Maybe not. He asked the audience to keep it under wraps, sure, which is why we feel bad talking about it now, but since there’s been so much buzz about it, we felt we had to get some final thoughts in and hopefully stop the madness.

What we know: Will it be in black and white? “Yes and no”, said Kevin. Perhaps a Wizard-of-Ozish dissolve from B&W to color at some point in the picture, we think? Brian O’Halloran is very excited about the project, and plans to participate. EVERY Askewniverse character would hopefully appear in the film, including Jeff Anderson as Randal.

Now, here’s what we suggest: STOP TALKING ABOUT IT. Obviously, Kevin’s either playing a great joke on all of us, or he just wanted to get some buzz out there and be finished with it. After all, he’s got “Dogma” to worry about along with a Fletch script…Clerks 2, if it happens, is just a thought right now and nothing more. You’re not going to get any info from View Askew on it, and we’re not talking anymore, either. Please, oh please, stop mailing us about it!

The bottom line, is, think what you like. We hope the news is true. But there’s a lot more stuff coming out of the Askewniverse that we ARE sure of…Let’s talk about that for now. 🙂

  • The VulgarThon Wrap-Up Page IS still coming. We’ve just been SO busy keeping up with the regular news as well as our lives outside of this website (Yes, they DO exist), so the VulgarThon page has been coming together slower than we’d hoped. There IS a LOT of text written, so we hope you’ll have an hour or so to spare when the final thing goes online. There’s still a LOT more to be told, and when we finish we won’t have even covered half of what went on at the fest. Also, we’re still hoping for some more photo submissions to include on the page as well. Let us know if you’ve got any to share. Shots of the lines, the theatre, the Q&A’s…That’s the kind of stuff we’d love to have. Look for the VulgarThon page soon, and sorry for the delay. We hope that, when it’s done, it’ll be the most comprehensive one out there.
  • We’d like to give a big shout out to Dave Weisbrot AND Alan Wolf, who were both kind enough to mail us original copies of the Asbury Park Press’s Sunday, January 4th edition with the View Askew article. Now we can EACH have a copy! Thanks guys, we certainly appreciate it.

  • Although Kev’s being pretty cryptic about it, we think that “Dogma” may be moving filming to a new location. This means NO Memphis, and current speculation points to a possible shoot somewhere in New York. We’ll keep you posted here and on Dogma: Rumor Control.
  • It’s getting futher and further into 1998, but those Top 10 lists keep surfacing, and Amy keeps appearing! Thanks to Hal Phillips for letting us know that the flick made the Top 10 lists of 2 of the Village Voice’s critics.
  • Matt Damon is scheduled to appear on the Oprah Winfrey show tomorrow (Monday) at 4 PM. Scoop courtesy of Carrie.
  • Finally, not one, but TWO people sent us this scoop: Ben Affleck was spotted on an episode of the short-lived series “The Torkelsons” on the Disney channel this weekend. Now, we don’t find this in itself that News Askew-worthy, but found the fact that 2 people were actually WATCHING this show scary in itself.
  • What’s Up Film Threat’s Ass?

    January 11th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Man, oh man. How quickly they turn on you. We remember when Film Threat used to sing the praises of Kev’s work, now they’re using half of their e-mail notes just to bash the man. Tonight, Film Threat’s weekly digest sent out an entire seperate mailing, consisting of just hate mail concerning the death of Independent Film (Which they so brilliantly surmised was all due to the cause of Kevin writing a Fletch script). There WERE a few positive mailings that were printed, one of which from a familiar soul by the name of Keef who even got a “Big Helium Dog” mention in there! Then, they put the capper on with shit like this:
      OVERRATED FILM OF THE YEAR
      …STUFF DELETED…
      2) “Chasing Amy” – I guess with a budget of only $250,000, Kevin Smithcouldn’t afford realistic characterization. Yeah, let’s have a threesome. That’ll solve our problems! Please. You’ve been watching way too much porn, Kevin.

MOST DISAPPOINTING FILM OF THE YEAR
      …STUFF DELETED…
      3) “Chasing Amy” – Has Kevin Smith ever actually TALKED to a girl?

Sad thing is, we actually normally like these guys and value their opinion. For some reason, though, they’ve decided to start a View Askew war. Who knows what the deal is, and, for that matter, who really cares? We just thought you’d like to see what was going on. We’re sure that Kevin’s just losing major sleep over it anyway. Yeah, right.

  • News Askew Celebrates 50,000th Hit!

  • It’s a most glorious day…Today, News Askew/Drinks Askew celebrated it’s 50,000th visit.Congratulations and thanks to Joel Spurny for mailing us with the news that he hit the magic number! We don’t have a prize or anything cool to give away, unfortunately, but we’re damn happy to be here. Who knew that this little site would have gotten so far during it’s humble beginnings last May?

Thanks also to all of you for visiting, and for all the notes of congratulations that we received today on the milestone. We appreciate your sticking with us and the site, and hope to make the next 50,000 just as memorable.

  • Flixtour Becomes “A Better Place”…

    January 10th @ 12:00 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Here’s some more news that we learned at VulgarThon: Vincent Pereira’s been asked to take his film “A Better Place” on a Flixtour, which brings him to at least 12 colleges around the country, covers all his travel, food, and living costs, and even pays some of the green stuff to boot. Not only will he get the chance to show his excellent film (*We know, we saw it at VulgarThon and it delivers…Full details in our wrap-up) to many diverse audiences, but he’ll get to see the country and take a nice vacation. Here’s Vin’s words:
In case anybody missed my announcements during the Q&As at the VulgarAthon, A BETTER PLACE has been invited to participate in the Flixtour, a kind of traveling film festival that will bring the film to a minimum of twelve colleges over a ten week period, starting in late January. Needless to say, I’m very excited about this- the prospect of seeing my film with so many audiences over the next few months (and getting paid for it no less) is… fuck, let’s just say that I’m very, very happy.

And we’re happy for ya…Congrats, Vincent, and good luck!

By the way, check out Vincent’s snazzy new webpage as well…
