‘Chasing Amy’ director tries ‘Chasing Oliver’
Wanna write comics? Try writing movies first.
It worked for Kevin Smith, “Clearks” and “Chasing Amy” screenwriter and lifelong comics fan. Smith parlayed movie fame into an uncoming run on Marvel’s Daredevil, and now he’s got his dream project in his sights: DC’s Green Arrow.
“The current Green Arrow ends in September,” said Darren Vincenzo,GA editor. “Then we are off for two-to-six months to accommodate Kevin’s schedule and we should relaunch the series with a new #1. Kevin will bethe regular writer and, as long as his schedule allows, he can write to his hearts content.”
What Smith will be writing is two Green Arrows. Smith has a strong affection for the former (and currently missing-in-action) Green Arrow Oliver Queen. “And I love [current GA] Conner Hawke,” Vincenzo said. “As long as I’m editing, Connor will be around in some capacity.”
Vincenzo said Smith’s coming to the title happened though a chance meeting. “Kevin came to DC for lunch and I ran into him in the hall. He said if [current GA scribe] Chuck Dixon ever wanted off, to give him a call. Well Chuck had to leave becasue of a big workload, so I called Kevin and offered it to him. He thought about it for all of 10 seconds and said, ‘I’m in.'”
The only kink to iron out? How to bring back to the title. “We met over a beers for a few hours and came up with literally 12 ways to do it,” Vincenzo said. “It is just a matter of picking the best one now.”
