…While trying to figure out what to do with the book, I thought back to a brief exchange I had with director/screenwriter Kevin Smith (CLERKS, MALLRATS, CHASING AMY) last year when he visited the DC offices. Kevin told me he loved Green Arrow and would love the opportunity to write something involving the characters(he especially loved Oliver Queen, the urban hunter).

Naturally, I called Kevin (actually, he’s tough to reach– eventually I had to fax him) with the offer. When we finally hooked up on the phone he imediately said, “I’m in.” All that remained was to discuss what he wanted to do and his availability. We got together while he was in New York City putting the finishing touches on his MTV short films. We talked about the myriad possibilties and made some plans.

When I announced that Kevin had agreed to come on board it was immediately decided that the best way todebut Kevin Smith’s GREEN ARROW was to relaunch the book. As I write this, Kevin is wrapping on the shooting of his latest film, DOGMA. He’s already mapped out what he wants to do with his first story arc (which is, as I write this, planned to be a Prestige formatminiseries) and it will be under way by the time you read this.

Mostly newcomers are in the cast- the three main leads are the amazingly talented Matt Kasczinski (spelling?), the lovely and beguiling Lorene Scafaria (she played Jay’s sister in the M-TV shorts), a right cool chap by the name of Michael Linstroth, and the hilarious Kevin Heffernan. The film is narrated by a character named Martin Huber who is played by Michael Ian Black of M-TVs THE STATE and Comedy Central’s VIVA VARIETY. There are a couple of other celebrity cameos in the flick, including our own Kevin Smith (he played “The Director” of the film in the behind-the-scenes segments)and Scott Mosier, and also Dickey Barret, the lead singer of The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The film is a chaotic comedy that has a threadbear basic plotline dealing with a rather unintelligent young man namedCharlie Osgood who, while trying to cope with the tragic death of his best friend, inadvertantly brings about the near-downfall of mankind. The film is currently finishing post-production and will be completed by early October, just in time to submit to Sundance where it will HOPEFULLY have it’s premiere. It certainly deserves to go there, because, regardless of what some asshole who calls himself/herself The Chosen One said on this board yesterday (thank you Ming or BenToads for deleting that scumbag’s comments), the film is a comedic masterpiece. It was written and directed by Brian Lynch, who posts here as HUBER. I was the assistant director and co-editor of the film with Brian.
